What to Pack in a Typhoon Emergency Kit for an Island Household

Prepare two supplies: a larger home stock for sheltering through an extended outage, and a smaller bag you can take if you must evacuate. Start with water, food and medicines, then add communications, light, documents, hygiene supplies and what the people and animals in your household need. Exact quantities, alert systems, routes and shelter rules depend on your island and local authority.

Pack two layers: a home supply and a portable go-kit

Keep a dry, accessible supply at home for a possible long outage, and a separate bag that is practical to carry if you need to leave. A kit supports your plan; it does not replace evacuation orders or local emergency instructions.

Published quantities vary by purpose and location. The American Red Cross general guidance recommends a three-day evacuation kit and a two-week home supply, with one gallon of water per person per day: Red Cross survival-kit supplies. Its Pacific Islands guide recommends 14 days of supplies at home and a one-to-three-day kit for people in tsunami evacuation zones; the search result does not establish the guide’s publication date: Red Cross Pacific Islands preparedness guide. In a July 1, 2026 advisory for Guam and the CNMI ahead of a potential storm, the Red Cross Pacific Islands Region recommended seven to ten days of food and water: Red Cross Guam and CNMI advisory. These are different planning contexts, not one universal island requirement.

For a U.S.-oriented baseline, NOAA advises at least three days of non-perishable food, water and medicine, and suggests storing a longer water supply if possible: NOAA hurricane disaster supplies. NOAA warns that power and water may be out for weeks after a hurricane. In its July 2026 advisory, the Red Cross Pacific Islands Region also described power and communications difficulties after Super Typhoon Sinlaku. Typhoon preparedness can use these hurricane supply categories by analogy, but local cyclone guidance takes precedence.

Start with water, food and a way to prepare meals

Water

  • Store drinking water in clean, sealed containers. The Red Cross general reference is one gallon per person per day, paired with a three-day evacuation supply and a two-week home supply; household needs and local advice may differ.
  • Before service is disrupted, fill clean water containers if local guidance recommends doing so. The CDC’s hurricane and tropical-storm guidance includes this step: CDC: Preparing for Hurricanes or Other Tropical Storms.
  • Plan separately for the portable bag and the home reserve. The amount you can carry may be less than the amount you need to store at home.

Food and cooking

  • Choose non-perishable, easy-to-prepare foods household members can eat. Include suitable food for infants and anyone with a medical diet.
  • Pack a manual can opener if you include canned food.
  • If you may need to cook without normal utilities, follow local fire-safety advice for any appliance or fuel. There is no single cooking method or fuel recommendation established for all island households.

Pack medicines, first aid and sanitation supplies

  • Include prescription medicines and medical supplies in their original or clearly labelled packaging, plus copies of prescriptions and a written medication list. The Red Cross general guidance recommends a seven-day medicine supply; NOAA says to have at least three days and to prepare for potentially longer disruption.
  • Bring first-aid supplies, personal hygiene items and disinfectant supplies.
  • Add consumables and equipment your household relies on, and ask local health or emergency services about special needs.
  • For infants, pack needed items such as bottles, baby food and diapers.

Keep light, official updates and phone power available

  • Pack a flashlight and spare batteries.
  • Include a battery-powered or hand-crank radio for official updates. A U.S.-branded NOAA Weather Radio may not receive the warning service used on your island, so confirm local broadcast and alert compatibility before choosing a device.
  • Bring your phone, charging cables and a suitable portable charger. NOAA lists portable crank- or solar-powered USB charging as options.
  • Keep cash in small denominations if available; card systems, ATMs or communications may be interrupted.
  • Write emergency contacts on paper and carry a paper map or written route information when useful. NOAA advises keeping contacts on paper if internet access is unavailable, and the Red Cross recommends a local map in case GPS fails.

Protect documents and tailor the kit to your household

  • Pack water-protected copies of identification, insurance, medical records, prescriptions, proof of address and other locally important documents.
  • Include a change of clothes, towels and bedding if your local shelter expects people to bring them. The Pacific Islands Red Cross guide says cots are not provided in a hurricane evacuation shelter or tsunami refuge area; confirm current arrangements locally.
  • For pets, bring food and water, identification, a bowl, leash or carrier, and any medicines. Find pet-friendly evacuation options in advance.
  • A multi-purpose tool and basic safety items can be useful; choose and store them safely for everyone in the household.

Organize supplies and follow local instructions

  1. Store home supplies in a dry, accessible place. Keep the evacuation bag separate and ready to carry.
  2. Periodically check dates and whether the supplies still suit household needs; replenish items after use.
  3. Before a storm, monitor official local alerts and learn the designated evacuation routes and shelters. Check local rules for warning devices, water, shelter supplies and transport.
  4. If authorities order evacuation, take the portable kit and essential medicines, identification, phone and charger, and cash. Use recommended routes. The CDC says never to ignore an evacuation order and never to drive through floodwater.
  5. If instructed to shelter in place, keep supplies accessible and stay away from windows. Wait for an official all-clear before going outside.
