What to Pack in a Bug-Out Bag for a Quick Evacuation

A bug-out bag—also called a go bag—is a small, comfortable pack you can grab immediately when authorities or conditions require you to leave. Pack portable water and ready-to-eat food, a phone with backup charging, light, a radio, first aid, medicines, identification and other key documents, cash, hygiene supplies, and a whistle. Then add items for children, pets, disabilities, medical equipment, climate, and the hazards most likely to affect your route.

This is a carryable evacuation bag, not a replacement for a larger home emergency-supply kit. Your household should be able to lift and carry it without struggling, and you should follow local officials’ evacuation instructions even if that means leaving supplies behind.

What a go bag is—and what it is not

FEMA and Ready.gov use “go bag” for a portable set of essentials that is easy to grab and carry during an evacuation. It is designed for movement: walking to a shelter, reaching a meeting point, moving between vehicles, or leaving on short notice. A home emergency kit serves a different purpose. It can hold more water, food, tools, and household supplies because it normally stays where you live.

Question Go bag Home emergency kit
Primary job Support a rapid departure Support people sheltering at home or managing a longer disruption
Location Accessible and ready to grab Stored at home in one or more locations
Design constraint Must be comfortable for the intended carrier Can include heavier or bulkier supplies
Contents Portable essentials, documents, medicines, communication and signaling items Additional food, water, sanitation and household supplies for several days
Planning approach Match the likely route, weather, mobility and evacuation destination Match the home, utility outages and hazards in your area

There is no federal “ideal” backpack size, model or load weight. The useful test is practical: the person who will carry the bag can walk with it, reach the important items quickly, and keep its contents protected from the conditions expected on the route.

Start with the conditions you are preparing for

Before buying containers or filling pockets, decide what a quick evacuation would look like for your household. A flood evacuation, wildfire departure, hurricane move, winter storm relocation and hazardous-materials incident can require different clothing, document protection, transport and pet arrangements. Local emergency-management instructions take priority over any generic checklist.

Map the departure

  • Identify at least one route and a backup route. Include destinations where your household can actually stay.
  • Decide where everyone will meet if separated and write down out-of-area contacts.
  • Account for people who walk slowly, use wheelchairs or other assistive technology, need a service animal, or rely on powered medical equipment.
  • Plan how infants, children and pets will travel. A plan that assumes a shelter accepts every animal or that a pet will walk calmly for miles is incomplete.

Set the carry limit

Use the person who will carry the bag as the limiting factor. A bag that contains every possible item but cannot be lifted quickly defeats its purpose. Put dense, essential items close to the wearer’s back, keep frequently needed items in reachable pockets, and divide supplies between household members when that is safe and practical.

Core items to pack

Water and food

Pack drinking water and nonperishable food that can be carried and eaten with little or no preparation. Federal emergency-kit guidance calls for water and food for several days, but a quick-evacuation bag must balance that goal against the load a person can carry. Do not assume that one universal water quantity fits every route, climate, age group or medical condition.

  • Choose food that the household already tolerates and can eat without cooking.
  • Include any opener, utensils or special preparation item the food requires.
  • Separate a portion for each person so one opened package does not become the only meal available.
  • Plan separately for infant formula and other feeding needs.

Store water and food so a leak cannot soak documents, electronics or medicines. Replace anything damaged, opened or past its usable date according to the package instructions.

Communication, information and light

Pack a charged phone, a power bank or spare battery, and a car charger when it is useful for your evacuation plan. Add a flashlight with spare batteries and a battery-powered or hand-crank radio. A whistle provides a simple way to signal if you are separated, trapped or unable to call.

If you don’t love your survival bag, you can contact us any time and we’ll do our best to make it so you do.

Write household contacts, the meeting point and important phone numbers on paper. A phone may be lost, uncharged or unable to connect, so do not make the plan dependent on one device. Keep the radio and flashlight controls easy to find rather than buried under clothing or food.

First aid, medicines and medical equipment

Include a first-aid kit suited to ordinary minor injuries and the needs your household already understands. Pack prescription medicines and relevant over-the-counter medicines, plus extra glasses or contact lenses. The Ready.gov educational checklist recommends planning for at least a week of medications; that is a checklist recommendation, not a universal clinical rule. Ask a pharmacist or clinician how to maintain an emergency supply safely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

People who use medical or assistive equipment should pack required accessories and backup batteries. Include written prescriptions or medication details where they can be found quickly. Do not remove medicines from their labeled containers if doing so would make identification or dosing unsafe.

Identification, records and money

Protect copies of photo identification, insurance information, proof of address, medical records and prescriptions. Place paper copies in a waterproof container or sealed waterproof pouch. Maintain secure digital copies that household members can access if the originals are unavailable, while protecting account credentials and personal information.

Carry cash in small denominations. Power failures or damaged communications systems can make electronic payment unavailable even when stores or transport are operating.

Hygiene and sanitation

Pack personal hygiene and sanitation supplies appropriate to the people leaving: items for washing, menstrual care, toileting and waste handling, plus any product a household member cannot easily replace. Keep these supplies in a separate waterproof bag so a leak or a used item does not contaminate food or documents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clothing and weather protection

Adapt clothing to the season and local hazard. A spare layer, sturdy footwear and protection from rain, heat or cold may matter more than an extra gadget on a route that involves waiting outdoors. Keep a small set of essential clothing accessible without unpacking the entire bag. The exact selection depends on climate, mobility and the evacuation destination.

Household-specific additions

Infants and children

  • Infant formula, feeding supplies and diapers.
  • Child-sized hygiene items and any medicines the child uses.
  • A written contact card and a familiar comfort item that does not add excessive weight.
  • Information about allergies, medications and the adult authorized to make decisions if caregivers become separated.

Recheck children’s supplies as they grow. A bag packed for an infant can become unusable within months if sizes and feeding requirements are not updated.

Older adults and people with disabilities

  • Eyeglasses, hearing-device supplies and other daily assistive items.
  • Mobility-device accessories and backup batteries for powered equipment.
  • Communication cards or written instructions if a person has speech, cognitive or sensory needs.
  • Enough specialized hygiene or medical supplies to reach the planned destination and obtain replacements.

Practice the route with the actual equipment and bag. A theoretically accessible route may fail because of stairs, debris, crowds or a dead battery.

Pets and service animals

Prepare animals as members of the household rather than leaving their needs to chance. Ready.gov pet guidance identifies food, water, medicines, grooming supplies, first aid and sanitation needs, along with a leash or harness, a traveling bag, a crate or sturdy carrier, and familiar items.

  • Keep vaccination or medical records and a current photo with the household documents.
  • Use a carrier or harness suited to the animal and transport method.
  • Identify shelters, hotels, relatives or other destinations that will accept the animal; do not assume every emergency shelter will.
  • Pack enough food and water for the route and expected wait, while considering the carrier’s weight.

Protect the contents from the hazard

Water-resistant organization is useful for any evacuation, but the level of protection should reflect the hazard. Flood planning calls for protected important documents, practiced evacuation routes, supplies for several days and plans that include pets. For a flood-prone route, use sealed inner bags and keep the pack above likely standing water when loading a vehicle. For heat, protect medicines and electronics from prolonged high temperatures. For cold, prevent batteries and liquids from freezing where that could make them unusable.

Do not treat a bag as permission to ignore official orders. During an actual evacuation, leave when instructed, use the designated routes, and do not return until authorities say it is safe.

A practical packing procedure

  1. List the people, animals and equipment. Write every household member, pet, medication, assistive device and feeding requirement before selecting quantities.
  2. Choose the carrier. Select a comfortable bag that the intended person can carry. Give children only loads they can safely manage; an adult may need to carry their essentials.
  3. Pack the non-negotiables first. Put water, ready-to-eat food, medicines, identification, contact information, a phone and backup charging, light, radio, first aid and a whistle on the initial list.
  4. Add household-specific supplies. Include infant, disability, medical-equipment and pet items before optional conveniences.
  5. Waterproof and label. Seal documents, medicines and electronics in inner pouches. Label medication and pet supplies clearly so another household member can find them.
  6. Test the load. Wear the filled bag, walk with it and adjust the contents. Remove duplicates and anything that cannot justify its weight.
  7. Store it for immediate access. Keep the bag where everyone knows it is, not in a locked location that may be inaccessible during a power failure or hurried departure.
  8. Practice the plan. Rehearse who takes which bag, how pets are secured, where the household meets and which route is used. Correct problems revealed by the drill.

Maintenance that prevents an empty promise

Check the bag periodically and whenever medications, household members, seasons or local hazards change. Ready.gov advises checking supplies periodically but does not establish one mandatory inspection interval for every household. Use practical triggers: a child changes size, a prescription changes, a pet’s diet changes, batteries approach their replacement date, or a new evacuation route becomes necessary.

  • Replace expired, damaged or opened food, water and medicines according to applicable instructions.
  • Recharge the power bank and phone, then confirm that cables and the car charger still work.
  • Test the flashlight, radio and spare batteries.
  • Update contact cards, prescriptions, insurance copies and proof-of-address documents.
  • Confirm that carriers, leashes, mobility equipment and clothing still fit.
  • After each practice or real evacuation, restore every item to its labeled position.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Making the bag too heavy

Adding every camping tool can leave the carrier unable to move. Start with the essentials and distribute supplies among adults. Keep the bag portable rather than trying to reproduce a complete home kit on one back.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Relying on a preassembled kit without checking it

A commercial bag is not automatically complete for your family. Compare its contents against medicines, documents, infant supplies, pet needs, assistive equipment, climate and route. Add missing items and remove unsuitable ones.

Keeping documents only on a phone

A dead battery, lost phone or failed network can block access. Carry protected paper copies and maintain secure digital copies as a second layer.

Forgetting the evacuation destination

Supplies do not solve a sheltering problem. Confirm where people and pets can go, how you will travel there and where the household reunites if separated.

Never practicing

A plan can fail at the first staircase, locked gate, missing charger or frightened pet. A short drill exposes these issues while there is still time to fix them.
