What to Look for When Choosing an AI Investment Fund in India (2026 Guide)

Choose an AI investment fund in India by examining what “AI” actually describes, the securities you will own through the fund, concentration, benchmark, currency exposure, costs, liquidity, documents and the manager’s process. An AI label is not proof that a portfolio is managed by artificial intelligence, nor does a past return or fund name establish quality.

Start by defining what “AI fund” means

“AI fund” can describe a thematic portfolio that owns companies associated with artificial intelligence, a fund whose manager uses machine-learning systems in research or operations, or both. These are different claims. A portfolio may hold semiconductor, cloud-computing, software and data businesses while still being selected through a conventional index or human investment process.

SEBI’s May 9, 2019 circular on reporting artificial-intelligence and machine-learning applications and systems offered and used by mutual funds concerns disclosure of those systems. It does not establish that every AI-themed scheme is AI-managed. SEBI’s Mutual Funds Regulations, last amended July 7, 2026 and effective from April 1, 2026, should be read alongside each scheme’s current documents. Ask the AMC to identify whether AI is merely the investment theme, part of security selection, used for risk controls, or used in other operations.

Look through the fund structure to the actual holdings

The product name is only the starting point. Determine whether you are buying direct shares, an index fund, an exchange-traded fund, or a fund of funds (FoF). An FoF buys units of another fund, so your exposure, costs and risks depend on both layers.

A dated Indian example

The November 29, 2025 scheme information document for Mirae Asset Global X Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF Fund of Fund describes an open-ended overseas FoF investing in units of the Global X Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF (AIQ). Under normal circumstances, its indicative allocation is:

Holding category Indicative allocation What it means
Units of the underlying AIQ ETF 95–100% Most portfolio risk comes from the overseas ETF and its holdings.
Money-market instruments, including tri-party repo, and debt securities 0–5% A small liquidity or cash-management sleeve; it does not make the portfolio diversified by itself.

This is a dated disclosure, not confirmation that the scheme is currently available or that its allocation is unchanged. Before investing, obtain the latest SID, addenda, portfolio and riskometer. Inspect the underlying ETF’s current holdings, countries, sectors and largest positions rather than relying on the FoF name.

Questions that expose hidden concentration

  • What percentage is in the ten largest underlying companies?
  • Are holdings concentrated in a few semiconductor, cloud, platform or software businesses?
  • Does the underlying index cap individual stocks, sectors or countries?
  • Can the FoF temporarily hold cash, debt or derivatives, and under what limits?
  • Are you paying an additional fund-of-funds expense layer over the underlying ETF’s expenses?

Compare funds on the same decision axes

Compare like with like. A direct Indian equity fund, an overseas FoF and an exchange-traded product can have different dealing times, taxes, currency exposure and cost structures even when their names contain “AI.” Record the current figures from each scheme document on the same date.

Axis What to check Why it matters
Theme and holdings Current portfolio, index methodology, sector and country weights Reveals whether the fund gives broad AI-related exposure or a narrow bet.
Structure Direct portfolio, index fund, ETF or FoF; underlying-fund expenses Determines layers of cost, dealing mechanics and look-through risk.
Benchmark Named total-return benchmark and matching period Provides a fair reference for performance, not a promise of similar returns.
Currency and hedging Foreign-currency exposure, permitted hedges and actual hedging policy Rupee movements can raise or reduce returns independently of share prices.
Costs Current total expense ratio, transaction charges, exit load and fund-level plus underlying costs Recurring and one-time charges reduce investor returns.
Liquidity Subscription and redemption cut-offs, settlement, dealing frequency and liquidity risk Explains when you can transact and whether the portfolio can meet redemptions.
Risk controls Riskometer, diversification limits, derivatives policy and suspension provisions Shows how losses and exceptional market conditions are addressed.
Investment process Rules for index tracking or active selection and any disclosed AI/ML use Clarifies what the manager actually does, rather than what the label suggests.

Where a provider does not publish a comparable current figure, record “not stated” and investigate; do not fill the gap with a historical number from another document.

Use the benchmark and performance data correctly

The cited Mirae scheme names the Indxx Artificial Intelligence & Big Data Index Total Return Index (INR) as its benchmark. A total-return benchmark includes the effect of distributions according to its methodology, making it more appropriate than comparing a fund with a price-only index. Use the benchmark specified in the current SID and compare fund and benchmark over identical periods, after allowing for the fund’s fees and tracking difference.

Do not select a fund because it recently outperformed. The scheme document states: “There is no assurance that the investment objective of the Scheme will be realized and the Scheme will not assure or guarantee any returns.” A SEBI-hosted Nippon India Artificial Intelligence Fund of Fund risk disclosure similarly says: “Past performance of the Sponsors/AMC/ Mutual Fund does not guarantee the future performance of the Scheme.” These are risk disclosures, not forecasts.

Understand currency, market and liquidity risks

Foreign-currency movement

An overseas portfolio can gain in local-market terms but deliver a lower rupee return if the foreign currency weakens against the rupee. The cited Mirae document says investors bear this movement and that the scheme does not intend to hedge it. Check the current policy: “no intention to hedge” is different from a prohibition on hedging, and policies can change through updated documents.

Underlying-market and concentration risk

AI-related companies can be valued on expectations about computing demand, data-centre spending, regulation and future products. A thematic index may therefore be more volatile than a broad-market index. Read the underlying fund’s concentration limits and the actual largest positions. Diversification across several names does not remove the risk that many holdings depend on the same technology cycle.

Liquidity and operational risk

Overseas market holidays, time-zone differences, capital controls, trading suspensions or stressed markets can delay valuation and redemptions. An FoF also depends on the underlying fund’s ability to create or redeem units. Read provisions covering temporary suspension, valuation of illiquid securities and settlement delays, and keep an emergency cash reserve outside the investment.

Read the documents in the right order

  1. Get the current Scheme Information Document. Confirm the scheme objective, permitted instruments, benchmark, asset-allocation ranges, risk factors, loads and dealing terms.
  2. Read the Statement of Additional Information with it. The Mirae document specifically advises reading the SID together with the SAI and checking whether either has changed after its November 29, 2025 date.
  3. Check the latest addenda and notices. Look for changes to the name, benchmark, investment strategy, expense ratio, service providers or merger status.
  4. Open the latest factsheet and portfolio. Verify holdings, country and sector weights, cash levels, portfolio turnover and the date of the data.
  5. Record the current riskometer and transaction terms. Note purchase and redemption cut-offs, minimum amounts, exit load, settlement timing and any restrictions.
  6. Verify the underlying fund. For an FoF, read the underlying ETF or fund’s objective, methodology, holdings, expenses, currency and liquidity disclosures.
  7. Ask for a written explanation of AI use. Request the system’s role, human oversight, data controls, validation and whether it affects security selection, execution or only administration.

Calculate the cost you will actually bear

Use the current total expense ratio (TER), not an old factsheet or a headline with no date. For an FoF, examine both the investing scheme’s expenses and the expenses charged inside the underlying ETF or fund. Also check exit loads, brokerage or transaction costs, foreign-market costs, taxes and the effect of tracking difference. The available documents do not establish a current TER for every India-accessible AI-themed scheme, so obtain that figure directly before comparing products.

Do not treat a lower TER as automatically better. A cheaper portfolio with high concentration, persistent tracking error or poor liquidity can be less suitable than a slightly costlier product that delivers the intended exposure more reliably. Compare costs over your expected holding period and contribution pattern.

Check suitability before you invest

An AI theme is a satellite allocation, not a substitute for a diversified financial plan. Decide the maximum percentage of your portfolio you can tolerate losing during a technology-sector downturn. Match the product’s dealing terms with your time horizon, and ensure you can leave the money invested through periods when valuations fall or redemptions are delayed.

  • Use money needed for near-term expenses only in products designed for that purpose, not a volatile overseas technology theme.
  • Confirm that your platform supports the scheme, its cut-off time and the relevant currency and settlement process.
  • Keep records of purchase dates, statements, remittances and redemptions for your tax adviser.
  • Do not infer tax treatment from the SID excerpt. Tax depends on current Indian law, your investor status, holding period and the specific product, so obtain current professional advice.

Common selection mistakes and how to correct them

Assuming the name proves AI management

Fix: Separate thematic exposure from operational AI use and demand a description of the investment process.

Relying on a launch-year return

Fix: Compare the current fund with its stated benchmark over consistent periods and examine drawdowns, tracking difference and portfolio changes.

Ignoring the second fund layer

Fix: Read the underlying ETF’s holdings, expenses, creation/redemption mechanics and currency policy.

Using stale documents

Fix: Check the document date, subsequent addenda, latest portfolio, TER, riskometer and subscription/redemption terms immediately before investing.

Confusing a benchmark with a target

Fix: Treat the benchmark as a comparison reference; it does not guarantee equivalent returns.

A practical decision worksheet

Before placing an order, write down the answers to these questions and keep the document dates beside them:

  • What exactly does “AI” refer to in this scheme?
  • What will I own after looking through every fund layer?
  • What are the top ten holdings and combined sector and country weights?
  • Which benchmark and total-return convention apply?
  • What happens to my rupee return if the foreign currency moves?
  • What are the current TER, underlying expenses, exit load and transaction charges?
  • When can I subscribe or redeem, and what happens in a stressed or closed market?
  • What does the riskometer say, and can I withstand that level of loss?
  • What has changed since the document was issued?
  • Which tax questions require current professional advice?

If an answer is unavailable, that uncertainty is itself a reason to pause. A transparent fund with a clearly described process and current documents is easier to evaluate than a product whose appeal rests mainly on the word “AI.”
