The right local bank or credit union is the one whose insured account, total costs, access, technology and rules fit the way you actually manage money. Compare the specific account disclosures—not just the institution’s name or a “free” label—before opening an account.
Start by verifying deposit insurance
Insurance protects eligible deposits if an insured institution fails, but coverage depends on the institution and how ownership is recorded. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s 2023 consumer guidance describes the general standard as up to $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category at an FDIC-insured bank. Federally insured credit unions receive analogous coverage through the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, administered by the NCUA.

Confirm the institution itself
- Use the FDIC’s official bank resources to verify that a bank is insured.
- Use the NCUA’s official credit-union resources to verify that a credit union is federally insured.
- Ask whether a similarly named fintech, investment product or payment service is actually holding your money at the insured institution. Insurance does not automatically extend to every product sold through a financial brand.
Check how your deposits are aggregated
The $250,000 figure is not a blanket amount for every account you hold. Deposits with the same institution may be combined within an ownership category. Individual accounts, joint accounts and certain fiduciary or retirement categories can be treated differently, while the exact result depends on the account title and applicable rules. If you already keep substantial savings at the institution, ask the bank or credit union to review your ownership structure rather than assuming each account receives a separate limit.

Calculate the account’s real cost under your habits
Request the current fee schedule and account agreement for the exact checking or savings account. Institutions can change terms with written notice, so a fee quoted by an employee or shown in an old advertisement is not enough. Build your estimate around the transactions you actually make.

| Cost or condition | What to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly maintenance fee | What is the recurring charge, and is it waived? | A “no fee” account may require a condition every month. |
| Minimum opening deposit | How much is needed to open the account? | This is different from the balance needed to avoid a monthly fee. |
| Minimum balance | Is the requirement based on a daily, average or statement-cycle balance? | A single low-balance day can trigger a charge under some account designs. |
| Direct deposit or other waiver | What qualifies, when is it measured and what happens if it stops? | Waivers may depend on payroll deposits, electronic statements or another specified activity. |
| ATM use | Which machines are in-network, and are out-of-network fees reimbursed? | Frequent cash withdrawals can make a low monthly fee irrelevant. |
| Overdraft and returned items | What happens when a payment exceeds the available balance? | Declines, overdraft charges and bounced-check charges have different consequences. |
| Other charges | Are there fees for paper statements, checks, stop payments, dormant accounts or special services? | Occasional fees can dominate the cost for an otherwise inexpensive account. |
Do not treat “free” as “every service costs nothing”
CFPB guidance treats “free” or “no cost” as a defined account claim. An account using those terms generally cannot impose certain core service, deposit, withdrawal, transfer, transaction-limit or minimum-balance fees. That label does not necessarily eliminate incidental charges such as out-of-network ATM fees, overdraft fees, bounced-check fees, dormant-account fees or charges for optional services. Read the definition in the account agreement and list the exceptions.
Compare fees with interest, not interest alone
For a checking account, a small interest rate can be outweighed by maintenance, ATM or overdraft charges. Estimate a typical month using your own number of withdrawals, card transactions, checks and expected balance. Then test a bad month—for example, a missed direct deposit or an unexpected payment—to see whether the account remains affordable.
Test branch and ATM convenience against your routine
Map locations near home, work, school and the places where you shop. Check published hours, Saturday access, drive-through or appointment requirements, cash-deposit capability and whether the closest ATM is operated by the institution or a surcharge-free network. A branch that looks nearby may not handle the service you need, and an extensive network is of little value if its machines are on the wrong side of your regular trips.

Ask about cash and in-person tasks
- Can you deposit cash at every branch or only selected locations?
- Are notary, cashier’s-check, wire-transfer or safe-deposit services available locally?
- What identification or appointment is required for a complex request?
- Are ATM withdrawals, deposits and daily limits different from branch limits?
If you rarely use cash, a distant branch may be acceptable when digital service is strong. If you regularly deposit cash, need certified checks or prefer face-to-face help, local hours and staff availability deserve more weight than a marginal difference in rates.
Evaluate online banking, mobile tools and customer support
Log in to a demonstration account if available, or ask for a feature list. Confirm that the digital service supports the tasks you perform rather than relying on an app-store rating alone.
- Mobile check deposit and its daily or monthly limits
- Bill payment, recurring transfers and external-account linking
- Real-time or near-real-time balance and transaction alerts
- Debit-card controls, travel notices and the process for reporting fraud
- Electronic statements, downloadable transaction data and person-to-person payments
- Accessible support by phone, secure message, chat or branch
Check customer-service reputation in a way that reflects your likely needs: response times, escalation to a human, after-hours help and the process for a lost card or account lockout. A polished interface cannot compensate for support that is unavailable when a payment is disputed.

Confirm eligibility and the features you actually need
Credit unions commonly limit membership to people who meet a field-of-membership requirement, such as location, employer, organization or family connection. Ask what establishes eligibility, whether a membership share account is required and whether that share has a minimum balance. A bank generally does not use the same membership structure, but its account may still have residency, identification or business-status requirements.
For either institution, verify the account’s practical features before opening it:
- Direct-deposit setup and the timing for switching payroll or benefits
- Debit-card availability, replacement rules and transaction limits
- Check writing, cashier’s checks and money orders if you use them
- Mobile deposit eligibility, image-retention rules and endorsement instructions
- Automatic savings, scheduled transfers and overdraft-linked accounts
- Any limits on the number or type of withdrawals, transfers or deposited items
Do not assume that an account designed to reduce fees includes every conventional checking feature. Some low-risk products deliberately restrict checks, bill pay, transaction counts or overdraft access.

Understand what happens when your balance is insufficient
Ask the institution to describe the exact sequence when a payment exceeds the available balance. A transaction may be declined, paid into overdraft, transferred from another account or returned unpaid. The result can differ for a debit-card purchase, an ATM withdrawal, an electronic bill payment and a paper check.
Accounts that decline transactions
Some low-risk accounts are designed to decline transactions rather than permit overdrafts. That can reduce overdraft exposure, but a declined payment may still cause a late fee, service interruption or returned-payment problem at the merchant. These accounts may also limit check writing or online bill pay, so compare the protection with the services you need.

Ask when deposited funds become available
“Deposit accepted” does not always mean “money available to spend.” Availability depends on the deposit type and the institution’s policy within applicable federal limits. Before relying on a deposit for rent, payroll or a time-sensitive payment, ask:
- When do cash, electronic deposits, checks and mobile deposits become available?
- What is the daily cut-off time for a branch, ATM and mobile deposit?
- Are new-account, unusually large, questionable or redeposited checks subject to longer holds?
- Where will the hold and release date appear in online banking?
Keep a buffer if a delayed check could trigger an overdraft. A convenient mobile-deposit feature is less useful if its limits or cut-off times do not match your pay schedule.
Compare local options on the same worksheet
The CFPB’s Summer 2022 comparison worksheet recommends researching products, services, locations, rates, fees and other factors, and comparing three or more options where practical. Use one row per institution and one column per account so promotional language does not obscure differences.

| Comparison area | Evidence to record | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Insurance | FDIC or NCUA status; ownership category; deposits already held there | Are all intended deposits covered under the way they are titled? |
| Total cost | Monthly fee, waiver conditions, ATM, overdraft and occasional-service charges | What will a normal month and a difficult month cost? |
| Access | Branches, hours, cash services, ATM network and surcharges | Can you complete routine and urgent tasks where you need them? |
| Digital service | Mobile deposit, bill pay, alerts, transfers and support channels | Can the account replace the in-person tasks you do not want to make? |
| Eligibility | Membership, identification and opening requirements | Can you open and keep the account without an avoidable condition? |
| Account rules | Transaction limits, check access, overdraft treatment and fund availability | Will restrictions and timing work with your income and bills? |
A practical selection process
- List your routine. Count monthly deposits, cash withdrawals, checks, debit transactions, bill payments and transfers. Note how often you visit a branch and how quickly deposited funds must be usable.
- Gather current disclosures. Obtain the fee schedule, account agreement, funds-availability policy and eligibility requirements for at least three local options when practical.
- Verify insurance. Confirm FDIC or NCUA status and ask how your existing and proposed accounts are aggregated by ownership category.
- Run two cost scenarios. Calculate expected annual cost for ordinary behavior and for a month with a missed waiver, an out-of-network ATM visit or an insufficient balance.
- Test access. Visit or call during the hours you would need help, locate the nearest suitable ATM and confirm cash-deposit and mobile-deposit limits.
- Resolve rule questions. Ask specifically about overdrafts, declined transactions, check writing, bill pay, transfer limits and deposit holds. Request unclear answers in writing.
- Choose the best fit, not the most attractive headline. Select the account that remains workable when your routine changes, then keep the disclosures for reference.
Warning signs that an account may not fit
- The institution cannot clearly identify its FDIC or NCUA insurance status.
- The “free” claim is prominent but the waiver condition or incidental-fee list is difficult to obtain.
- The nearest ATM is out of network, or cash deposits require a trip you would not realistically make.
- The mobile app lacks a task you depend on, such as bill pay or mobile deposit.
- Staff give different answers about overdrafts, eligibility or funds availability.
- A low-risk account avoids overdrafts but would cause repeated declined bill payments or lacks check access you need.
Make the decision based on your highest-cost risk
For one person, the decisive issue may be avoiding monthly fees; for another, it may be reliable cash deposits, fast mobile-deposit availability or human help during a dispute. Weight the category that could cause the largest practical loss or disruption, then use the disclosures to check the remaining trade-offs. A bank and a credit union can both be good choices, and neither type is automatically cheaper, safer or more convenient without comparing the particular local accounts.
