Choose a fantasy goalie by your league’s scoring first, then compare expected starts, role security, team context, performance across the categories your league rewards, and current health. A goalie who projects for many wins may still be a poor fit if your format also counts saves, goals against, save percentage, or shutouts.
Start with your league’s goalie scoring
In standard category leagues, the common goalie categories are wins, goals-against average (GAA), save percentage (SV%), and shutouts, according to NHL.com’s October 1, 2026 goalie rankings. Check your league settings rather than assuming every platform or commissioner uses the same format.

Category leagues
Compare how a goalie may help across all the categories your league tracks. Wins and shutouts are counting stats; GAA and SV% measure performance relative to workload. A goalie with a strong win outlook is not automatically the best all-around choice if your team needs help in ratios.
Points leagues
Read the exact scoring weights for wins, saves, goals against, and shutouts before comparing players. Yahoo Help’s default head-to-head points settings, as reported in its help result accessed in 2026, award 5 points for a win, subtract 3 for each goal against, add 0.6 per save, and award 5 for a shutout. Those are Yahoo defaults, not universal rules; your league may use different values.

Compare workload and role security
Expected starts determine how often a goalie can add counting stats, but volume is useful only if the role is reasonably secure. NHL.com says its 2026–27 evaluations consider goalie situations and anticipated starts. A goalie in a tandem or with an uncertain share of the workload may offer fewer opportunities than a secure starter, even if his per-game numbers look appealing.
- Check whether the team has identified a clear starter or is rotating goalies.
- Look for recent changes in playing time rather than relying only on a season-long projection.
- Consider whether your league rewards accumulated stats, ratios, or both; extra starts can help counting stats while exposing ratios to more risk.
Account for team context and category balance
Team strength and projected goal support influence a goalie’s chance to earn wins. But win projections are not a complete fantasy ranking. NHL.com’s 2025–26 win-projection article explicitly distinguishes its projected-win order from rankings that also account for GAA, SV%, and shutouts. Use win outlook as one input, not a substitute for the scoring categories that matter in your league.

Use past performance carefully
Past production can help you compare candidates, especially when you examine the same measures your league scores. Yahoo Help defines SV% as “(Shots Faced – Goals Allowed) / Shots Faced” and GAA as “(Goals Allowed * 60) / Minutes Played.” Yahoo’s help result also says a goalie must play the entire game to earn a shutout. Check your league’s definitions if its platform or commissioner uses different rules.

Check health and changing situations near draft or lineup time
Injury concerns can affect both availability and projected starts. Tandem roles, injuries, and depth-chart changes can also make a ranking stale quickly during a season. Recheck current team and player news at the time you draft, add a goalie, or set your lineup instead of relying on an older ranking snapshot.

- Read your league settings. Note the exact goalie categories or point values, including whether saves and goals against are scored separately.
- Estimate opportunity. Compare likely starts and the security of each goalie’s role.
- Assess team environment. Consider goal support and win potential without ignoring ratio categories.
- Compare relevant production. Review wins, GAA, SV%, shutouts, or point totals according to your format.
- Update for risk. Check injury status, tandem changes, and projection uncertainty close to decision time.
For a dated example rather than a universal recommendation, NHL.com’s October 1, 2026 2026–27 editorial rankings list Andrei Vasilevskiy, Logan Thompson, Ilya Sorokin, Jake Oettinger, and Igor Shesterkin as its top five. The order reflects that ranking’s evaluation, not a best-fit list for every scoring system.
