Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The most important question is not whether a pair of earbuds advertises a heart-rate sensor. It is whether that sensor actually works in the workout app you use, stays against your ear while you move, survives your training conditions, and lasts long enough with monitoring enabled. Check those points in that order, then verify phone compatibility, outdoor-awareness controls, and the limits of the readings.
Use heart-rate earbuds as fitness feedback rather than medical equipment. Amazfit’s product documentation explicitly says its measurements are for reference and cannot be used for professional diagnosis or monitoring. That warning should shape your buying decision regardless of brand.

Start with the sensor and the app, not the marketing name
Heart-rate earbuds need a physical sensor in the earbuds and software that knows how to use it. A product page can mention an integrated sensor without explaining when it activates, where the readings appear, or which workout modes support it. Before buying, find the exact app workflow in the manual or support documentation.
Confirm that the sensor is built in
Look for an explicit statement that the earbuds contain a heart-rate sensor, preferably with the sensor type identified. Amazfit describes the PowerBuds as having an integrated photoplethysmography (PPG) heart-rate sensor. That is materially different from earbuds that merely connect to a separate watch or chest strap.

Do not assume that a heart-rate icon in a retailer listing proves the earbuds measure your pulse. Ask whether the sensor is present in both earbuds or only one, whether it must touch a particular part of your ear, and whether the feature works independently of another wearable. If the documentation is vague on any of those points, treat the feature as unverified.
Trace the complete recording path
The app workflow determines whether a reading becomes useful data. Amazfit’s manual says to pair the PowerBuds in the Amazfit app and then start a workout in that app; heart-rate measurement begins automatically when the workout starts. If another heart-rate device is connected, the manual says the earbud sensor can be enabled from the workout-start screen.
This means pairing the earbuds over Bluetooth is not, by itself, enough. A music player, generic Bluetooth settings page, or a third-party exercise app may not start the sensor. Before purchase, identify the app that initiates measurement, the workout modes it supports, and where live and post-workout readings are displayed. If you train with a different app, verify compatibility directly rather than assuming the app can import the signal.
Check what alerts and controls are included
Some systems provide exercise alerts in addition to a number on a screen. Amazfit lists exercise alerts for the PowerBuds, but the cited documentation does not establish every alert threshold, supported workout type, or customization option. Ask for those details if zone notifications are central to your training.
Fit and retention determine whether readings remain usable
An earbud can have a capable sensor yet produce intermittent data if it shifts during intervals, running, or strength work. Retention is therefore a measurement issue as well as a comfort issue. Evaluate the physical design while considering the movements you perform, not just how it feels while sitting still.
Look for a secure mechanism that suits your movement
Check for features such as stabilizing wings, ear hooks, multiple tip sizes, or an adjustable nozzle. Amazfit documents removable magnetic sport hooks on the PowerBuds. Those hooks are intended to improve retention during exercise and can be removed when you prefer a less structured fit.
Confirm that the retention parts are included in the box, replaceable, and compatible with your ears. A hook that feels secure during a short test can create pressure over a long session; a soft tip that is comfortable may loosen when sweat accumulates. If possible, test the fit with the same head movements, cadence changes, and exercises you normally perform.

Check sensor contact and consistency
Ask where the heart-rate sensor sits and whether the manual specifies a fitting position. The sensor needs stable contact with skin; a loose seal, rotating earbud, or a tip that is too small can interrupt readings. Documentation that explains correct insertion is more useful than a claim that the product is “accurate.”
Consider left-right ear differences, glasses, helmets, and other equipment that may press on the earbud. If the product uses removable hooks, make sure the hook and tip combination you need does not conflict with a helmet strap or hearing protection.
Separate water and dust protection for the earbuds from protection for the case
Workout conditions expose earbuds and their charging case to different risks. Sweat and splashes reach the earbuds while the case may be left on a damp bench or carried in a bag. Read the rating for each component separately.
Read the manufacturer’s exact rating
Amazfit lists the PowerBuds earbuds as IP55-rated and separately states that the charging case is not waterproof. The rating applies to the earbuds, not automatically to the case, and it does not make the entire charging system suitable for water exposure.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not infer that an IP rating covers swimming, showering, submersion, or high-pressure water unless the manufacturer explicitly says so. If you train outdoors, ask how the warranty treats sweat, rain, and corrosion. Keep a non-waterproof case dry even when the earbuds themselves have a stated resistance rating.
Match protection to your routine
List the conditions the earbuds will encounter: indoor sweat, heavy perspiration, rain, dust, poolside use, or accidental drops into water. Then compare those conditions with the manufacturer’s instructions. When the documentation is silent, choose the conservative interpretation and protect the earbuds and case from exposure beyond the stated rating.
Compare battery life with heart-rate monitoring turned on
Playback figures measured with sensing disabled can overstate the runtime you will get in training. Look for a battery claim that identifies whether heart-rate monitoring is active, the volume used, the codec, and any awareness mode.

Use the complete test conditions
Amazfit states that the PowerBuds provide eight hours per charge and 16 additional hours from the case, for 24 hours total in its stated scenario. That scenario includes heart-rate monitoring on, volume at 50 percent, AAC mode, and Thru Mode disabled. Amazfit also notes that laboratory conditions and usage habits affect actual results.
Carry those conditions with the number when comparing products. Higher volume, phone calls, a different Bluetooth codec, frequent alerts, or an awareness mode can change endurance. If a listing gives only a headline total and no test conditions, mark the claim as difficult to compare.
Plan for the longest session and charging gaps
Calculate the longest workout you expect between charges, then add time for commuting or back-to-back sessions. Ask whether the case can recharge the earbuds once or several times, how the case itself is charged, and whether the app warns you before monitoring stops. A battery that meets a laboratory claim may still be inconvenient if you cannot recharge the case where you train.
Heart-rate sensing can be the feature that ends a session first if it consumes more power than ordinary listening. Look for separate runtime figures for monitoring on and off; if only one is supplied, assume the stated scenario is the manufacturer’s best-defined condition rather than a guarantee for every use.
Verify phone, operating-system, and app compatibility before paying
Compatibility has two layers: the phone’s Bluetooth and operating-system support, and the current version of the companion app. A published minimum operating system can be old and still fail to establish that the app remains supported today.

Amazfit’s cited product information lists Android 5.0 and iOS 10.0 or later, along with Bluetooth 5.0 BLE. Those are the requirements stated in the older product documentation. They do not establish current app support, compatibility with modern phone releases, or continued availability of the PowerBuds.
Check the app store listing and the manufacturer’s current support pages on the day you buy. Confirm that your exact phone model can install the app, complete pairing, start a workout, and display heart-rate data. If you use a work-managed phone, a tablet, or a phone without standard Google or Apple services, verify those cases separately.

Test the workout hand-off
After installation, perform a short workout before relying on the earbuds for a planned event. Pair in the companion app, open the workout screen, start an activity, and confirm that a heart-rate value appears. If another heart-rate device is connected, look for the documented control that enables the earbud sensor. A successful music connection alone is not proof that measurement is working.
Evaluate outdoor-awareness features without treating them as safety equipment
Workout earbuds can include a mode that mixes outside sound with music. Amazfit calls this Thru Mode. The product documentation warns that it does not allow users to fully sense surrounding traffic conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse that warning as a buying rule: an awareness mode is an additional listening option, not a substitute for visual checks, safe routes, or attention to traffic. Compare how the mode is activated, whether it changes battery life, and whether it can be toggled quickly during a run. If the documentation does not describe the controls, do not assume you can respond instantly to a changing environment.
Treat heart-rate readings as training information, not medical monitoring
No sensor claim should be read as a clinical validation. Amazfit’s product documentation states: “This product is not a medical device. The measurement data is intended for reference only and cannot be used to perform professional diagnosis or monitoring of any medical conditions.”
The available documentation does not provide an independent accuracy figure or a comparison against a chest strap or watch across different exercise types. Therefore, do not choose a product because a marketing page implies medical-grade precision, and do not use an earbud reading to diagnose a condition or make a medication decision.
Know when to use a different device
If your clinician has prescribed a monitoring method, use that method instead of substituting consumer earbuds. For training, treat the reading as one input alongside perceived effort and your established coaching plan. Investigate unexpected values by checking fit, restarting the workout, and comparing with a trusted device; do not assume the earbud is correct simply because it displays a number.
A documented example: Amazfit PowerBuds
The following table records what Amazfit’s product page and manual document. It is an evidence checklist, not a current recommendation. The product page is old, so availability, app support, and phone compatibility must be verified before purchase.

Use this buying process before placing an order
- Write down your workout conditions. Include session length, indoor or outdoor location, sweat and rain exposure, headphones or helmet use, and whether you need live alerts.
- Find the primary documentation. Locate the manufacturer’s product page and user manual. Confirm a built-in heart-rate sensor rather than support for an external sensor.
- Map the app workflow. Identify the companion app, the screen that starts measurement, supported workout modes, and any setting needed when another heart-rate device is connected.
- Inspect the fit system. Check tip sizes, hooks or wings, adjustment options, replacement parts, and return conditions. The earbuds should remain stable during your actual movements.
- Record separate protection ratings. Note the rating for each earbud and the case. Compare those statements with your exposure to sweat, rain, dust, and water.
- Normalize battery claims. Copy the runtime, monitoring state, volume, codec, and awareness-mode conditions into your comparison notes. Reject a direct comparison when those conditions are missing.
- Verify current compatibility. Check the present app-store listing and support page for your exact phone and operating system. Do not rely solely on an old minimum-version table.
- Test before committing to a major workout. Pair through the companion app, start a short workout, confirm a live reading, activate any needed sensor setting, and test awareness controls outdoors in a safe place.
Common purchase and setup mistakes
“It paired, so the heart-rate feature must be working”
Bluetooth pairing can provide audio without starting measurement. Use the documented in-app workout flow and look for a live heart-rate value before assuming the sensor is active.
“The earbuds are water-resistant, so the case is safe too”
Protection is component-specific. The PowerBuds documentation explicitly distinguishes IP55 earbuds from a charging case that is not waterproof. Keep the case away from the conditions the earbuds are designed to tolerate.
“The total battery number is enough for every use”
A total such as 24 hours is tied to stated settings. Monitoring, volume, codec, and awareness features can change the result. Compare like with like and leave charging margin.
“The operating-system minimum proves modern compatibility”
Old published requirements do not prove that a current app still supports every phone. Install and test the present app, and confirm that the workout screen still exposes the earbud sensor.
“An awareness mode makes any route safe”
The manufacturer’s own warning says Thru Mode does not fully convey traffic conditions. Keep visual attention on vehicles, cyclists, and crossings.
“A displayed number is a diagnosis”
Consumer earbud readings are not a substitute for medical monitoring. Use them for general training feedback and follow professional advice for health decisions.
A practical decision rule
Choose workout earbuds with heart-rate monitoring only when all of these statements are true: the sensor is explicitly built in; the app workflow matches the way you train; the fit remains secure during movement; the earbud and case protection ratings suit your environment; battery claims include monitoring conditions; your current phone is supported; and you understand that the reading is non-medical. If any one of those checks fails, the heart-rate label alone is not a sufficient reason to buy.
