Start by defining the substrate and hole specification, then verify the tool’s rated capacity, bit interface, operating modes, power system, handling, vibration controls and dust-management options. For many concrete and masonry anchor holes, an SDS-Plus rotary hammer is a relevant starting category, while a hammer drill may suit lighter masonry work when its own specifications support the job.
Start with the job, not the tool
Write down the actual drilling task before comparing models. A tool that is ideal for occasional small anchor holes can be a poor choice for deep, repeated holes or work that also requires chiseling.

- Substrate: Identify whether you are drilling concrete, masonry or another material. Concrete density, reinforcement and aggregate can change the practical difficulty even when the nominal hole diameter is the same.
- Hole diameter and depth: Record the smallest, largest and most common diameters, plus the required depth. Compare those figures with the manufacturer’s rated range and the length of bit that can be used safely.
- Frequency and duty: Occasional holes have different requirements from production drilling all day. Repeated work puts more emphasis on ergonomics, cooling, service intervals, vibration control and accessory availability.
- Required operation: Decide whether you need rotary-only drilling, hammer drilling, chiseling, or more than one of these.
- Work position: Note whether the operator will drill overhead, horizontally, from a ladder or in confined spaces. Weight and balance can matter more than a small difference in peak power.
Project specifications, the current instruction manual and the site’s hazard assessment remain the controlling documents. Manufacturer catalog information is useful for screening candidates, but it does not replace those requirements.
Choose the tool category that fits the work
| Category | Where it fits | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| SDS-Plus rotary hammer | Everyday drilling in concrete and masonry, with light-to-medium chiseling on models that provide that mode. | Rated drilling range, maximum depth, operating modes, SDS-Plus connection, vibration features and compatible dust-control equipment. |
| SDS-Max rotary hammer | A separate rotary-hammer bit system for tools and accessories using SDS-Max (TE-Y) connections. | That the tool, bits and required diameters all use SDS-Max; verify the model’s stated capacity and duty in its manual. |
| Hammer drill | Concrete and masonry drilling when the selected model’s specifications and the project’s hole requirements are appropriate. | Model-specific capacity, recommended materials, duty cycle, chuck or bit system, and whether hammering is adequate for the job. |
These categories are not interchangeable by label alone. A hammer drill and a rotary hammer can both be listed for masonry, but their rated capacities, impact mechanisms, bit systems and intended workloads may differ. Treat the manufacturer’s application chart and manual as the deciding evidence.

Understand the modes you are paying for
Rotary-only drilling
Rotary-only mode turns the bit without an impact function. It is useful when the material and bit call for rotation alone. On a multi-mode tool, confirm that the selector has a positive rotary-only position and that the manual identifies suitable materials and accessories.
Hammer drilling
Hammer drilling combines rotation with impacts for concrete and masonry. The useful comparison is not just impact frequency; check the manufacturer’s complete drilling range, recommended hole sizes and the bit type specified for that mode.
Chiseling
Chiseling disables rotation and uses impacts to chip or remove material. If you need to chase channels, remove small sections of masonry or perform similar light-to-medium work, select a model that explicitly lists chiseling. Do not infer this capability from a hammer-drill label.

A concrete example of specification reading
The SDS-Plus TE 3-C is described by its manufacturer as a triple-mode rotary hammer for hammer drilling, rotary-only drilling and chiseling in concrete and masonry. Its product-page figures are 1.8 foot-pounds of single impact energy, 1,070 revolutions per minute in hammer-drilling mode and 5,160 impacts per minute at full hammering frequency. Those are specifications for that model, not general buying benchmarks. Use the same approach with any candidate: read every figure alongside its mode, rated range and stated application.
Check capacity against the complete hole specification
Manufacturers may publish a maximum diameter, an optimal diameter or a range for a particular material. “Maximum” is not automatically the best production size. Compare the candidate’s stated capacity with:

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces
- Complete a wide range of applications with a high-performance motor that delivers up to 300 UWO, and an impact driver delivering up to 1,400 in-lbs of torque
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- the diameter you will drill most often;
- the largest diameter in the project;
- the required embedment and total hole depth;
- the bit length needed to clear dust and reach the bottom;
- the number of holes per shift; and
- whether the work is vertical, horizontal or overhead.
Hilti’s selection material uses optimal drilling diameter, main drilling direction, chiseling capability and vibration-reduction features as comparison axes. That is a useful checklist, but it is not a universal ranking of brands or models. If a project specification calls for a particular diameter or anchor system, verify the exact tool-and-bit combination rather than extrapolating from a nearby size.
Match the bit interface and the bit itself
The connection at the nose of the tool determines which bits can be used. The cited manufacturer catalog lists both SDS-Plus (TE-C) and SDS-Max (TE-Y) connections. A bit with the wrong shank will not become compatible through an adapter that the manual does not approve.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm the tool connection. Read the specification for SDS-Plus, SDS-Max or another chuck system.
- Buy the matching bit family. Search for SDS-Plus concrete and masonry bits when the tool uses SDS-Plus; use SDS-Max bits only with an SDS-Max tool and approved accessories.
- Match the bit to the base material. Select a bit specifically rated for concrete or masonry and for the drilling mode you will use.
- Match diameter and working length. The bit must meet the anchor or sleeve requirement and reach the specified depth without leaving debris at the bottom.
- Inspect before every shift. Replace bits with damaged shanks, excessive wear, cracked tips or flutes that no longer clear dust effectively.
Bit cost and availability are part of ownership. A tool that is inexpensive but uses an uncommon interface can become expensive or slow to operate if the required diameters are difficult to source.
Compare power, runtime and fleet compatibility
Corded tools
A corded rotary hammer provides continuous mains power, but the cable can restrict movement, create a trip hazard and complicate work from lifts or scaffolding. Check the site’s electrical supply, extension-cord requirements and protection procedures before selecting one.
Cordless tools
A cordless model removes the cable, but the battery, charger and spare-battery plan become part of the drilling system. Verify that the tool uses a battery platform already approved for your fleet, then estimate runtime from the actual hole size, material and work rate. A manufacturer’s maximum performance figure does not tell you how many holes a battery will drill on your site.

Power is not a single number
Compare impact energy, speed, impact frequency, rated capacity and duty information together. A high no-load speed may not translate into faster concrete drilling if the bit, impact mechanism, dust removal or operator technique is unsuitable. Use the manual’s operating limits to decide whether a tool can sustain the planned workload.
Evaluate handling, vibration and control
Weight, balance and grip affect accuracy and fatigue. For overhead or ladder work, a compact, well-balanced model may be safer to control than a heavier tool with a higher nominal rating. For repeated hammer drilling, look for the manufacturer’s vibration-reduction information and compare the stated values under the same measurement conditions.
- Vibration reduction: Confirm whether the feature is built into the tool, the side handle or both, and read the declared measurement method.
- Torque and restart control: If the manual lists electronic torque control, kickback reduction or restart protection, understand when it activates and what it does not prevent.
- Handle adjustment: Check whether the auxiliary handle can be positioned for the drilling direction and whether it remains secure under impact loads.
- Selector durability: A mode selector should lock clearly into the chosen setting; never force it while the mechanism is under load.
- Service access: Determine how brushes, seals, chucks or filters are inspected and whether the manufacturer specifies service intervals.
Treat dust control as a complete system
Dust control is not an accessory you can evaluate in isolation. The tool, extraction attachment, bit and vacuum must work together, and the setup must suit the jobsite’s rules.
Possible components
- Hollow bits: These can remove drilling dust through the bit when the manufacturer supports that configuration.
- Dust-removal attachment: A shroud or extraction unit can capture dust at the hole.
- Compatible vacuum: The vacuum must provide the required airflow, filtration and connection for the attachment.
The manufacturer states that its TE 30 tool meets OSHA 1926.1153 Table 1 requirements when used with a TE DRS-D system and a Hilti vacuum. This is a specific statement for that named tool, attachment and vacuum combination. It is not a blanket compliance claim for other rotary hammers, accessories, vacuums or jobsites. Before work starts, confirm the exact setup in the current manual and the applicable US OSHA requirements, then complete the site’s hazard assessment.
Questions to ask the supplier
- Is the extraction attachment approved for this exact tool and bit diameter?
- Which vacuum model, filter class and hose connection are required?
- Does the system support overhead drilling and the planned hole depth?
- What cleaning, filter-shaking and disposal procedure is specified?
- Are there restrictions on wet drilling, hollow bits or damaged seals?
Use a repeatable buying process
- Write the job card. List material, hole diameters, depths, orientation, number of holes, chiseling needs and dust-control obligations.
- Short-list tool categories. Start with SDS-Plus rotary hammers for concrete and masonry work that includes light-to-medium chiseling; consider a hammer drill only when its own specifications match the task.
- Filter by interface. Decide whether SDS-Plus, SDS-Max or another chuck system fits the bit inventory and required diameters.
- Check capacity and modes. Compare optimal and maximum ranges, depth, rotary-only operation, hammer drilling and chiseling.
- Check power and handling. Select corded or cordless based on site access, then compare weight, balance, vibration information and control features.
- Build the accessory list. Include the correct bits, side handle, depth stop, extraction attachment, vacuum, filters and transport case where required.
- Verify documentation. Read the current manual, compatibility chart, safety instructions and service terms for the exact model and region.
- Run a controlled trial. Before full production, drill representative holes in the actual substrate and confirm diameter, depth, dust capture, operator control and anchor fit.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by impact number alone
Impact energy or impacts per minute describe only part of performance. A tool can have impressive figures yet be unsuitable for the bit diameter, depth or duty cycle you need. Compare the complete specification and application chart.

Confusing a hammer drill with a rotary hammer
Both categories may mention masonry, but that does not make them equivalent. Confirm the selected model’s capacity, mechanism, mode selection and recommended workload.
Ignoring the bit connection
Ordering SDS-Max bits for an SDS-Plus tool—or the reverse—creates an immediate compatibility failure. Put the interface in the purchase order, not just the words “concrete bit.”
Buying the extraction attachment later
A dust shroud that does not fit the tool or vacuum cannot deliver the claimed setup. Specify the complete tool, attachment, hose and vacuum combination before approval.
Using the maximum diameter as the normal production size
Maximum capacity is a limit, not necessarily the efficient or approved everyday range. Use the manufacturer’s optimal diameter and the project’s hole schedule to select a tool with reserve capacity.
Skipping a site trial
Concrete, masonry, reinforcement, access and operator technique vary. A short representative trial can reveal dust-capture, balance, depth-stop and anchor-fit problems before they affect a full installation run.

Cleaning and routine care
Manufacturers commonly include cleaning instructions because dust and debris can affect the bit interface, switches and extraction components. Follow the exact procedure for your model; the following sequence is a practical inspection framework, not a substitute for the manual.
- Disconnect the power source: unplug a corded tool or remove the battery from a cordless tool.
- Allow the tool and bit to cool before handling them.
- Remove the bit and brush or wipe dust from the shank, chuck opening, selector and ventilation areas using the method permitted by the manual.
- Empty or service the dust attachment and vacuum according to their instructions; do not bypass filters.
- Inspect the bit, retaining mechanism, side handle, cord or battery contacts and housing for damage.
- Reinstall only approved lubricant or sealing components, in the amount specified by the manufacturer.
- Run the tool briefly without a load after reassembly and stop if there is abnormal noise, binding, burning smell or excessive vibration.
Do not spray liquid into the housing, use compressed air where it can drive dust deeper into bearings or continue operating with a cracked housing or damaged cord. Tag a defective tool out of service and follow the employer’s repair process.
Decision examples
Occasional small anchor holes in masonry
Confirm the required diameters and depth, then compare a hammer drill and an SDS-Plus rotary hammer. If the work never requires chiseling and the hammer-drill model’s capacity covers the holes, it may be sufficient. If you need more than one mode or the material is demanding, an SDS-Plus model with the correct bits may be the better category to investigate.
Repeated concrete anchor drilling with dust requirements
Prioritize a rotary hammer whose rated range covers the production diameter, then specify the compatible extraction attachment and vacuum as one system. Verify the exact OSHA and site requirements for that configuration rather than relying on a generic “dust compatible” label.
Drilling plus light removal work
Select a model that explicitly provides rotary-only drilling, hammer drilling and chiseling. Confirm that its chiseling capability and vibration information match the amount and direction of removal work planned.
Mixed crews with an existing battery fleet
Start with platform compatibility, then compare the candidate’s capacity, runtime plan, balance and available spare batteries. A tool that fits the fleet can reduce charging complexity, but it still must meet the hole and duty specification.
Final purchase checklist
- Substrate and site conditions are documented.
- Diameter, depth, orientation and hole count are written down.
- Required modes—rotary-only, hammer drilling and chiseling—are confirmed.
- Rated and optimal capacity cover the actual work.
- Bit connection and accessory availability are verified.
- Corded or cordless power fits the site and, for cordless tools, the battery plan is adequate.
- Weight, balance, vibration information and control features suit the operators.
- Dust attachment, vacuum, filtration and compatibility are specified as a complete system.
- The current manual, safety requirements and service arrangements have been reviewed.
- A representative trial is planned before full production.
The most defensible purchase is the one whose documented capacity, interface, modes, handling and dust-control setup map directly to the project’s written requirements. Use model-specific specifications—such as the TE 3-C’s published 1.8 foot-pounds, 1,070 rpm hammer-drilling speed and 5,160 impacts per minute only for that model—and recheck availability and manuals before ordering.
