The right home electric screwdriver is usually a compact cordless model with controllable torque, a bit holder that matches your screws, and charging that suits how often you work. Choose a precision screwdriver instead when you will mainly open electronics or drive very small, delicate fasteners. If you need to drill holes or drive large screws into hard material, compare a drill/driver instead.
Start with the jobs you actually expect to do, then check torque control, speed, bit compatibility, battery details, handling and the contents of the kit. Maximum torque alone is a poor way to choose.

Choose the tool class before comparing specifications
“Electric screwdriver” can describe several different tools. Selecting the wrong class leads to stripped screw heads, damaged plastic, stalled motors or a purchase that cannot perform the job.
Compact general-purpose cordless screwdriver
This is the sensible choice for routine household fastening: assembling furniture, fitting hinges, tightening cabinet hardware, installing brackets and driving screws into pre-drilled holes. Bosch’s buying guidance describes cordless screwdrivers in this class as tools for driving screws into pre-drilled holes when high torque and drilling functions are not required. Its guide characterizes the category around screws up to 5 mm and says 2.5–5.5 Nm is adequate for the applications it discusses. Those figures are Bosch guidance, not a universal limit for every model or material.

A compact screwdriver is easier to control than a drill/driver for small jobs, but it is not a substitute for a drill. Check the individual manual before using it in a particular material or with a particular screw size.
Precision electric screwdriver
Precision models are designed for small fasteners in electronics, toys, cameras, computers and small household appliances. Their value is a very low, selectable torque rather than brute force. Xiaomi lists powered settings of 0.05 Nm and 0.2 Nm for one of its precision screwdrivers, values intended to reduce the risk of damaging small threads, housings and circuit boards.
That low torque is also the limitation. A precision driver that is excellent for an electronics enclosure may be unable to seat a furniture screw. Do not use a precision model’s low settings as evidence that it can cover general household work.
Drill/driver
Choose a drill/driver when the job includes drilling holes, driving substantially larger screws, working in harder materials or requiring more sustained torque. A drill/driver normally gives you a chuck for drill bits and a wider speed and torque range. Do not select between these classes by voltage alone; chuck type, clutch range, speed control, battery system and the actual task matter more.
| Tool class | Best-supported use | What to compare | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact cordless screwdriver | Routine screwdriving into pre-drilled holes | Clutch settings, torque, speed, holder, bits, size and charging | Not a drill when drilling is required; follow the exact model’s limits |
| Precision electric screwdriver | Small electronics and delicate fasteners | Very low selectable torque, precision bit profiles, long bits and charging | Low torque limits suitability for larger household screws |
| Drill/driver | Drilling and jobs beyond the screwdriver class | Chuck, battery platform, torque/speed range and task requirements | Usually larger and less specialized for tiny fasteners |
Torque control is more important than the headline maximum
Torque is the turning force available at the bit. More is not automatically better: too much torque can strip a screw head, pull a screw below the surface, crack a plastic boss or deform a soft material. A useful home screwdriver lets you select enough torque for the job and stop applying force when the screw seats.

Look for a clutch or selectable settings
A mechanical clutch limits torque by slipping when the selected level is reached. Compare the number of settings, the lowest usable setting and whether there is a separate maximum or “drill” mode. Bosch’s PRO Bosch GO is an example with a mechanical clutch, seven torque settings and a maximum mode; its listed variant specifies 5 Nm maximum torque. That is a model-specific specification, not a target every home screwdriver must meet.
Prefer a tool with a genuinely gentle first setting if you work with softwood, plastics, thin metal or small screws. The harder the material and the larger the screw, the more torque you may need. Bosch also notes that slower speed improves control when working with delicate materials.

Manufacturers do not always measure or present torque in identical ways, so cross-brand figures are not automatically comparable. Treat 2.5–5.5 Nm as Bosch’s category guidance and 5 Nm as the specification of the listed PRO Bosch GO variant. Check the manual for continuous-duty limits, recommended screw sizes and whether the figure is maximum, hard-joint or another test condition.
Precision torque needs a different scale
Precision drivers may quote hundredths of a newton-metre. Xiaomi’s stated powered settings of 0.05 Nm and 0.2 Nm illustrate the scale used for delicate fasteners. Those values are useful when you need repeatable, gentle tightening, but they cannot be compared directly with a general-purpose driver’s multi-newton-metre maximum as if the tools served the same jobs.
Check speed control and start behavior
A controllable trigger or pressure-sensitive start helps the bit engage the screw without jumping out. Lower speed is valuable for starting a screw, aligning a hinge, working near wiring and protecting soft materials. A single-speed tool can work for occasional assembly, but it gives you less margin for error.

- Use the clutch rather than your hand strength to decide when the screw is seated.
- Stop if the bit cams out repeatedly; switch to the correct profile or repair the damaged screw head.
Verify the bit holder, profiles and reach
Bit compatibility determines whether the motor’s torque can reach the screw. Confirm the holder format before buying extra bits. General-purpose models commonly use a standard hex-shank holder, while precision kits use smaller bits and a dedicated holder.
Match the profile to your screws
At minimum, identify the Phillips, slotted, Pozidriv, Torx, hex or security profile used by your furniture and appliances. A kit with many pieces is useful only when it contains the profiles and sizes you need. The bit must fill the recess; a nearly correct Phillips or Torx size will slip and damage the fastener.
Check length and access
Short bits are convenient in open spaces but may not reach a screw inside a cabinet channel, recessed handle or narrow appliance cavity. Xiaomi describes longer bits in its precision kit for deep or narrow access. For a general-purpose screwdriver, check whether the kit includes an extension holder and whether the extension locks securely without excessive wobble.
Confirm compatibility before adding accessories
Do not assume every bit set fits every electric screwdriver. Check shank size, magnetic retention, locking mechanism and the manufacturer’s compatibility information. Bosch’s product material lists variant-specific included items and advises matching part numbers when identifying spares; use the exact model and regional kit number when ordering replacements.
Compare battery and charging on the exact model
Battery claims are meaningful only when tied to a specific model, market variant and test method. There is no standardized cross-brand runtime test in the available manufacturer material, so do not rank tools solely by a claimed number of screws per charge.

Voltage is not runtime
Bosch lists the IXO 7 as a 3.6 V tool and gives a stated charging time of three hours on the cited market page. Voltage describes the electrical system; it does not by itself tell you how many screws the tool will drive or how long it will run. Battery capacity, motor efficiency, clutch use, screw size, material and pauses all affect runtime.
Check the charging interface
If you want one cable for your small devices, verify that the exact screwdriver has USB-C rather than relying on a product-family name. Xiaomi describes USB-C charging for its precision screwdriver. Confirm whether the cable and power adapter are included, whether charging can occur from a standard USB supply and whether the tool can operate while connected; those details vary by model.
Read endurance claims as manufacturer claims
Xiaomi’s US product page states that its precision screwdriver can drive more than 400 precision screws on one full charge. The page does not establish an independent, standardized comparison, so treat the figure as a manufacturer claim under its stated conditions, not a promise for every screw or user.
Consider battery replaceability and storage
For occasional home use, an integrated battery keeps the tool small. For frequent work, a replaceable battery platform can reduce downtime, but it usually adds size and cost. Check how the tool is stored, whether the battery should be left fully charged, and whether replacement batteries or service are available in your region.

Evaluate handling, visibility and access
Specifications cannot tell you whether a screwdriver will feel secure in your hand. Look at overall length, grip shape, balance, trigger placement and the space needed to reverse the direction. A short body helps inside cabinets; a pistol-style grip may be more comfortable for repeated fastening.

Lighting
An LED can illuminate a hinge recess or the underside of a shelf. Bosch’s PRO Bosch GO page lists an LED ring. Treat lighting as an access aid, not as a substitute for aligning the bit or using a separate work light.
Weight and balance
A heavier tool can feel stable but becomes tiring during overhead work. A very light precision driver is easy to guide around circuit boards but may lack the grip and torque needed for household hardware. If possible, hold the tool in the position you will actually use and check whether the bit remains on the screw without wrist strain.
Manual operation and control
Some compact drivers allow manual turning when the motor is off, useful for initially loosening a tight screw or finishing gently. Confirm the manual’s instructions before applying hand force; the clutch and gearbox still have limits.
Use this buying process
- List the actual jobs. Write down the largest screw, the hardest material, whether any holes must be drilled and whether electronics are included. This decides the tool class.
- Identify screw profiles and sizes. Inspect existing fasteners and note Phillips, Torx, hex, slotted or security types. Include the longest recess you expect to reach.
- Set a torque requirement. For routine pre-drilled household fastening, compare a controllable clutch and a useful low setting rather than chasing the highest maximum. For delicate electronics, look for precision values such as 0.05 Nm or 0.2 Nm and verify the manufacturer’s intended use.
- Check speed behavior. Prefer variable or at least two-speed control when you need careful starts, soft materials or work near fragile parts.
- Inspect the holder and kit. Confirm standard or precision bit format, included profiles, extension holders, long bits and the availability of replacements.
- Compare charging details. Record the exact model’s voltage, charging time, interface, battery type and any runtime or screw-count claim. Keep each qualification with the number.
- Assess physical access. Compare body length, grip, balance, LED placement and clearance around the screw. A technically capable tool is still a poor choice if it cannot fit the work area.
- Read the manual and regional listing. Product offerings, included items and warranty or parts support can vary by country and kit variant. Match the model number before purchasing accessories.
Match the screwdriver to common home tasks
Furniture assembly
Choose a compact general-purpose driver with a clutch, a low setting for soft panels and the Phillips, Pozidriv or hex bits used by the manufacturer. Start slowly and stop as soon as the joint is snug. Do not keep driving after the screw head is flush; over-tightening can crush chipboard or strip the insert.
Cabinet hinges and handles
Access and control matter more than maximum torque. A short tool, LED and a fine clutch setting help when the screw is close to a cabinet edge. Use the exact profile supplied with the hardware and hold the bit square to prevent cam-out.
Shelves, brackets and wall hardware
First determine whether drilling and wall anchors are required. If you must make a pilot hole or drill masonry, select a suitable drill/driver and bit rather than forcing a screwdriver. The screwdriver can still be useful afterward for installing the anchor or bracket.
Electronics and small appliances
Use a precision driver with very low selectable torque, the correct small profiles and long bits where recesses are deep. Disconnect power, remove batteries where appropriate and keep screws organized by location. Do not substitute a 5 Nm-class household driver for delicate fasteners.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCommon buying mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing by maximum torque only: A high number does not tell you whether the tool can apply gentle, repeatable force. Check the lowest clutch setting and speed control.
- Confusing a screwdriver with a drill: If drilling is on your task list, compare a drill/driver before buying.
- Assuming all bits fit: Holder size and bit standard matter. Verify compatibility before ordering an accessory set.
- Ignoring reach: A standard bit may be too short for a recessed screw. Look for an extension or longer bits.
- Treating runtime claims as laboratory comparisons: Screw counts and charging figures are model-specific manufacturer claims unless an independent test is identified.
- Buying a precision tool for furniture: Very low torque protects small fasteners but may stall on larger screws.
- Ignoring the regional variant: Voltage, charging time, included bits, cable, case and warranty can differ by market. Match the exact listing and model number.
- Overlooking service details: Check local warranty terms, spare-bit part numbers, battery availability and repair support before committing to a less common platform.
Safe and effective use after purchase
- Inspect the screw, bit and material before starting.
- Set the clutch low and increase it only when the screw will not seat.
- Keep the bit aligned with the screw axis and apply steady, moderate pressure.
- Use low speed for the first turns and around fragile materials.
- Stop when the clutch slips repeatedly, the bit cams out or the material begins to crack.
- Remove the battery or disconnect charging before clearing a jam or changing accessories, following the manual.
- Store bits dry and organized so the correct profile is available for the next job.
For a typical home toolkit, buy the smallest general-purpose cordless screwdriver that covers your largest routine screw and offers a controllable clutch. Add a precision screwdriver only when delicate electronics or very small fasteners justify its lower torque. Move up to a drill/driver when drilling or substantially higher capability is part of the work. Verify every torque, charging, bit and kit detail against the exact regional model rather than treating a manufacturer’s category guidance as a universal specification.
