Buy a computer that ships with Windows 11, then verify the exact processor, memory, storage, firmware, security hardware, graphics and display configuration against Microsoft’s current requirements. Those requirements establish eligibility, not a comfortable performance level. Your final choice should be sized for the applications you actually use, with enough storage, suitable graphics, the right screen and keyboard, useful ports, and support you can rely on.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A device running an unsupported Windows release no longer receives software updates, including security fixes. If your existing computer cannot run a current supported Windows release, replacing it with a Windows 11 PC is the straightforward long-term option.

Why replacing an unsupported computer matters now
Microsoft says unsupported Windows versions no longer receive software updates, including security fixes. That affects more than new features: vulnerabilities can remain unpatched, and application or peripheral compatibility becomes harder to predict. Microsoft’s guidance is direct: “If your devices don’t meet the technical requirements to run a more current release, we recommend that you replace the device with one that supports Windows 11.”
There are three practical paths. You can install Windows 11 on your current computer if it qualifies, buy a new Windows 11 computer, or use the consumer Windows 10 Extended Security Updates program while preparing to move. Microsoft’s current support information describes consumer ESU protection for eligible devices through October 12, 2027. Eligibility, enrollment requirements and dates can change, so check the current Microsoft terms before relying on ESU as a long-term plan.

A replacement purchase is not simply a search for the cheapest machine carrying a Windows 11 logo. It is a compatibility decision followed by a workload decision. A computer can satisfy the operating system minimums and still be frustrating for large spreadsheets, creative applications, software development, games, or heavy multitasking.
Start with the exact Windows 11 configuration
Confirm that Windows 11 is installed, not merely promised
Look for a listing that explicitly states the computer ships with Windows 11. Treat phrases such as “Windows-ready” or “upgradeable” as prompts to investigate, not as proof of compatibility. Record the exact model number, processor model, installed memory, storage type and capacity, graphics hardware, firmware information and display specification. A retailer can use one product name for several configurations, so compare the SKU or configuration code rather than relying on a product-family name.
Check Home versus Pro
Verify whether the license is Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro. The edition affects the features and management options available to you, and changing editions later may add cost or administrative work. For personal use, Microsoft requires internet connectivity and a Microsoft account during the initial setup of both Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro. Plan for that requirement before unboxing the computer, especially if the machine will be installed in a location without dependable internet access.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Use Microsoft’s current requirements as an eligibility check
Open the current Microsoft Windows 11 requirements page and compare the exact advertised configuration with every listed category: processor, memory, storage, firmware and Secure Boot, TPM, graphics and display. Do not check only the processor. Security firmware and TPM requirements can disqualify an otherwise capable-looking computer, while storage and display requirements are also part of the operating system baseline.
Meeting the minimums answers one question: can this configuration qualify for Windows 11 under Microsoft’s published rules? It does not answer whether the computer is fast enough, quiet enough, portable enough or comfortable for your work. Keep the eligibility check and the performance choice separate.
Match the computer to your actual workload
Before comparing models, write down what you do in a normal week. Include the applications you use, the size of your files, how many programs or browser tabs you keep open, whether you connect external displays, and whether you play games or use graphics-intensive software. This prevents a low price or a premium label from substituting for a useful specification.

Office work, browsing and communication
For documents, email, web applications, video calls and ordinary spreadsheets, prioritize a balanced processor, adequate installed memory, fast solid-state storage, a comfortable keyboard and a display that is easy to read for long sessions. Check the camera and microphone if meetings matter, and inspect the port selection if you use a wired network, projector, dock or external storage. The Windows 11 minimum is not a recommendation for the amount of memory or storage your personal workflow needs; compare the installed capacity with your applications and files.
Creative applications
Photo, video, 3D and audio applications can stress the processor, memory and graphics hardware in different ways. Identify the applications first and read their current requirements before choosing a computer. Compare the exact graphics capability, not just a marketing description such as “dedicated graphics.” Check storage capacity for source media and project files, sustained cooling, display quality and the availability of ports for cameras, drives and monitors. If the work involves large projects, a configuration that barely meets the operating system requirements leaves little headroom.
Development and technical workloads
Development environments, virtual machines, containers, local databases and large codebases can use substantial memory and storage while compiling or indexing. Compare the processor model, installed memory, storage capacity and storage type against the tools you run simultaneously. Check whether memory and storage can be upgraded if your workload is likely to grow. A thin laptop with permanently fixed components can be convenient, but it gives you fewer recovery options when projects become larger.
Games and graphics-heavy software
Games and other real-time graphics applications depend heavily on the graphics processor, its memory and cooling, as well as the central processor. Compare the exact graphics hardware and the software’s requirements; a Windows 11 compatibility statement does not establish game performance. Also consider the display’s resolution and refresh characteristics, available video outputs, fan noise and power requirements. No single Windows 11 configuration is the universal choice for every game or graphics application.
Evaluate the components that determine day-to-day use
Processor
Use the complete processor model, not just a family name or a claim such as “latest generation.” Compare it with the applications you identified and with the current Windows 11 requirements. Two computers described with the same broad processor family can have different power limits, core configurations and graphics capabilities. If a listing omits the exact model, ask the seller or choose a listing that supplies it.

Compare installed memory with the way you work, then check whether it is upgradeable. More demanding multitasking, creative applications, development tools and virtual machines generally need more headroom than basic browsing. Confirm whether the advertised memory is soldered, occupies an accessible slot or is divided between fixed and upgradeable components. The amount required for a Copilot+ PC is a separate Microsoft threshold and should not be mistaken for a universal recommendation for every Windows 11 computer.

Storage
Check both capacity and type. Solid-state storage is the relevant category for most current Windows 11 computers, while capacity determines how quickly applications, updates and personal files consume available space. Compare the usable capacity you will have after Windows and recovery data, not only the headline number. If you keep photos, video, games or development environments locally, allow room for growth. Confirm whether the drive can be replaced or expanded and whether a second storage slot exists.
Graphics
Integrated graphics may be appropriate for general productivity, while creative and gaming workloads can require a more capable graphics processor. Verify the exact graphics device and the display outputs. Do not infer graphics performance from the processor name or from a Windows 11 compatibility statement.
Choose the right form factor and display
Laptop or desktop
A laptop combines the computer, screen, keyboard, pointing device and battery in one transportable unit. Compare its weight, thickness, keyboard layout, battery expectations, webcam, charger and port selection. Battery estimates are usage-dependent, so treat them as planning information rather than a guarantee.
A desktop generally makes upgrades, repairs and multi-monitor connections easier, but it requires a separate display and input devices unless they are included. Check the case size, internal expansion options, power supply and the connectors you need. A small desktop can save space but may limit future upgrades or cooling.
Screen and ergonomics
Microsoft’s display requirement is a compatibility floor, not a recommendation for screen size or image quality. Compare screen size, resolution, brightness, viewing angles, surface finish and scaling behavior for the work you do. For extended reading or editing, keyboard comfort, pointing-device accuracy and the ability to position the screen can matter more than a small processor difference.
Consider accessibility needs before purchase: high-contrast visibility, keyboard spacing, touch or pen input, a full-size keyboard, port accessibility and compatibility with assistive devices. Confirm these details in the exact configuration rather than assuming they are shared across a product range.

When a Copilot+ PC is worth considering
Copilot+ is an optional hardware class, not a requirement for Windows 11. Microsoft specifies an NPU capable of at least 40 TOPS, 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory, and 256 GB of SSD or UFS storage among the requirements for that class. Verify those thresholds in the exact configuration if you are buying for Copilot+ experiences.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose this category because you want the experiences that require its hardware, not because the label automatically means a better computer for every task. It does not replace the need to compare the main processor, graphics capability, display, ports, battery behavior, upgrade options and support. A computer can be a good Windows 11 choice without being Copilot+ capable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare two qualifying computers without being misled by labels
Once two computers pass the Windows 11 eligibility check, compare them on the work you identified rather than on brand prestige or a single headline specification.
- Match the processor to the workload. Record each full processor model and assess which applications will run at the same time.
- Compare installed and upgradeable memory. Note fixed memory, open upgrade slots and the maximum supported configuration if the seller provides it.
- Compare storage realistically. Check capacity, solid-state type, usable space and replacement or expansion options.
- Assess graphics for the applications that need it. Verify the exact graphics hardware and display outputs.
- Compare the physical experience. For laptops, weigh portability, battery expectations, keyboard and screen. For desktops, check case size, cooling, expansion and included peripherals.
- Count the ports and accessories. Include docks, adapters, chargers, monitors and external drives in the decision.
- Read support and return terms. Confirm that they apply to the exact SKU and the market where you will use it.
- Compare the complete price. Use the delivered configuration, not the cheapest version of a product family.
If one computer has a Copilot+ label and the other does not, ask whether you actually need the associated experiences. If not, return to workload, comfort, expandability and support; those factors usually have a more direct effect on your purchase.
Plan the transition from the old computer
Inventory before ordering
List the applications you must reinstall, the files that need copying, the peripherals you need to reconnect and any license or sign-in information you will need. Check whether important software supports Windows 11 and whether files are stored locally, on removable media or in a cloud service. This inventory also reveals how much storage and how many ports the replacement needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsProtect your data
Make a verified backup before wiping, trading in, donating or recycling the old computer. Keep more than one copy of irreplaceable files until the new installation is complete and you have opened important documents on the replacement. Do not assume that a trade-in or recycling partner will recover your files for you.

Handle the old device locally
Microsoft identifies manufacturer and retailer trade-in and recycling programs, but participation and eligibility vary by market, device and condition. Check the current terms for your location. Donation may be appropriate for a still-useful computer, while recycling is the safer route for equipment that is damaged or no longer practical to support. Remove personal accounts and securely erase data according to the program’s instructions before handing the device over.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying on a minimum requirement alone
A computer that meets Microsoft’s floor can still feel slow with your applications. Use the minimums to reject incompatible devices, then select memory, storage, processor and graphics capacity around your workload.
Assuming a product family has one configuration
Retail listings often combine several processor, memory and storage options. Verify the exact SKU, including the operating system edition, before checkout and again when the package arrives.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Ignoring upgrade limits
Fixed memory or a sealed storage design can make a seemingly inexpensive computer costly to expand later. If your workload may grow, give upgradeability a place in the comparison rather than treating it as a technical footnote.
Forgetting the rest of the setup
A computer without the right display output, network connection, card reader, keyboard layout or accessibility feature may require adapters or replacement accessories. Count those costs and inconveniences before comparing headline prices.
Confusing Copilot+ with Windows 11 compatibility
Copilot+ has its own hardware thresholds. It is optional, and its label should influence the decision only when the associated experiences matter to you.
Leaving the move until support has already ended
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If your current device is unsupported, use a qualifying Windows 11 installation, a replacement computer or eligible consumer ESU as an interim measure while you complete the transition. Recheck Microsoft’s current ESU terms rather than assuming they remain unchanged.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A practical decision rule
Reject any listing that does not identify the exact Windows 11 configuration or that fails Microsoft’s current compatibility requirements. Among the qualifying choices, select the one that gives your workload enough processor, memory, storage and graphics capacity while meeting your needs for screen quality, portability, ports, input devices, accessibility, warranty and support. Add Copilot+ to the requirements only when you specifically want features that depend on its hardware.
That approach produces a replacement that is supported today without sacrificing the parts of the computer you will use every day. It also avoids paying for a label or specification that does not solve your particular workload.
