For everyday video calls, start with a USB webcam that works with your computer and call app, and treat 1080p as a sensible baseline—not a promise of the picture others will see. Then choose a field of view that fits your room, check how it handles your lighting, and weigh practical details such as the connector, privacy shutter, microphone and mount.
Check compatibility before comparing specs
Confirm the webcam’s connector matches a port on your computer: USB-A and USB-C are not interchangeable without an adapter or hub. Check the specific model’s operating-system requirements and named call-app support, too; compatibility can vary by product and may change over time.

Zoom supports built-in and USB plug-in webcams, but that does not establish compatibility for every camera with every app or computer. Check the webcam maker’s current compatibility details and your app’s requirements. For example, Logitech’s Brio 100 product guidance says 2 GB of RAM or more is needed for 1080p video streaming and 1 GB is typically needed for 720p; check current requirements for the particular webcam and software you use (Logitech Brio 100 specifications).

Decide whether 1080p is enough
For routine calls, 1080p is a practical camera-resolution baseline. A box’s maximum resolution describes what the webcam can capture in supported modes; it does not guarantee that the call app will send that resolution. The app’s settings, device capabilities and network conditions all affect the video that reaches other participants.

Zoom’s current support guidance gives different recommended bandwidths for different video modes. These are Zoom recommendations, not guarantees that a particular webcam or call will deliver the listed resolution (Zoom bandwidth requirements).
| Zoom meeting mode | High-quality video | 720p HD | 1080p HD |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1 calls | 600 kbps upload and download | 1.2 Mbps upload and download | 3.8 Mbps upload / 3.0 Mbps download |
| Group calls | 1.0 Mbps upload / 600 kbps download | 2.6 Mbps upload / 1.8 Mbps download | 3.8 Mbps upload / 3.0 Mbps download |
Zoom says, “The bandwidth used by Zoom will be optimized for the best experience based on the participant‘s’ network.” If calls look soft or unstable, a camera with a higher maximum resolution may not address the underlying app or connection limit.

Choose a field of view that fits your scene
Field of view (FOV) describes how much of the scene the camera includes. A tighter view can suit one person at a desk; a wider one can show more of the room or include multiple people. Wider is not automatically better: it can reveal distracting background, and the actual composition depends on camera placement and any framing controls in the software.

Match focus and lighting features to your setup
Autofocus can help if you move toward or away from the camera; fixed focus may be adequate for a mostly stationary desk setup. Neither feature alone establishes which webcam will produce better video for your particular call.
Room lighting and placement often make a visible difference. Light in front of you helps the camera show your face; a bright window or lamp behind you can make you appear silhouetted. Logitech recommends placing the camera around eye level and roughly an arm’s length away as a starting point for a head-and-shoulders frame. Before an important call, select the webcam in the app’s video settings and test the framing and lighting (Logitech webcam positioning guidance).

Some webcams advertise automatic light correction. For instance, Logitech lists RightLight 2 on both the Brio 100 and Brio 305. Treat that as a product feature, not a substitute for checking your actual room and camera position.
Compare practical features, not just resolution
- Privacy: An integrated shutter gives you a physical way to cover the lens between calls.
- Microphone: Check whether the webcam includes one and whether it suits your distance and room. Logitech lists a mono microphone with a stated range of up to 4 ft for the Brio 100; this is a manufacturer specification, not an independent audio test.
- Mounting: Confirm the camera can sit securely on your monitor or laptop, and check for tripod support if you need a different position.
- Cable and connector: Make sure the cable reaches a suitable port and that you have the correct USB type.
- Controls: Check whether software is available for the operating system you use. Logitech notes that Logi Tune is unavailable for ChromeOS on its Brio 305 page.
- Total cost: Compare prices for the models you are considering; no current prices or independent value comparisons are established here.
Use a short checklist to make your choice
- Identify your computer’s ports and operating system. Match them to the webcam’s connector and current system requirements.
- Confirm support for your call app. Check the specific model and app rather than assuming that USB connection alone ensures compatibility.
- Choose framing for the people and background in view. A single-person desk setup may favor a tighter field of view; a shared space may call for a wider one.
- Review the camera’s supported modes and your app’s output options. Treat the webcam’s resolution and frame-rate figures as camera capabilities, not guaranteed call output.
- Assess focus, lighting correction, privacy, microphone and mounting. Prioritize the features that solve real problems in your room and routine.
- Test the setup in the app before relying on it. Select the camera, check the crop and lighting, and make sure its microphone is the input you intend to use.
