The right CRT is the one that accepts the signals your consoles actually output and shows a stable, well-aligned picture on the specific set you are buying. Check the exact model’s inputs and 240p behavior, test the tube for geometry, focus, color and convergence, and confirm that you can safely move and place its weight. A prestigious model with a tired tube is a worse purchase than an ordinary set in demonstrably good condition.
Use this guide as a practical inspection and comparison plan before you hand over money.

Start with a console-and-signal inventory
Write down every console, scaler, adapter or computer you intend to connect. Record the output from each device rather than just its connector shape. A console may output a 240p retro mode, while another device may use a different analog format; the television must accept the actual timing and signal, not merely have a socket that looks compatible.
Recommended Free Tools
List the modes you will use
- Identify whether each console uses 240p for its normal games, menus or test software.
- Note any other resolutions or scan rates you expect to use, including those from an adapter or upscaler.
- Record whether the source offers S-Video, component or another output, and whether an adapter changes that output.
- Keep the console’s cable and any adapter with you when testing a candidate set.
240p handling varies between television models. A port label alone does not prove that a set will display that mode correctly. Buying guides and inspection checklists specifically flag this compatibility question, so verify the exact model’s manual or model-specific documentation and, ideally, test it with your own console. See the model-selection discussion in NOSTOS’s March 2026 CRT buying guide and the signal-compatibility notes from RetroTechLab.

Make a one-page compatibility sheet
Create columns for console, output type, required cable, expected mode and the CRT input you plan to use. Add a final column for “tested” and leave it blank until you have seen that combination on the actual television. This prevents a common mistake: buying a set because it has a familiar input, then discovering that the set rejects or mishandles the mode your console uses.
Understand the input trade-offs
Analog video names are not interchangeable. Sony’s explanation of television inputs describes S-Video as carrying luminance (the black-and-white detail) separately from the color information. Component video carries luminance (Y) plus two color-difference signals (Pb and Pr). Those are different signal arrangements, so the source output, cable and television input must all agree. Read Sony’s technical descriptions at Sony Support.
| Input or signal family | What the connection carries | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| S-Video | Separate luminance and color information, as described by Sony. | The console or adapter must provide S-Video, and the CRT must have a compatible S-Video input. Confirm the connector and pin arrangement rather than relying on a product name. |
| Component | Y luminance plus Pb and Pr color-difference signals. | Confirm that the source outputs component and that the CRT’s jacks are component video inputs. Check the model documentation for supported modes. |
| RGB | A separate configuration used by some computers and monitors. | Do not treat an RGB terminal as component. Sony explicitly warns that RGB and component are different configurations; the exact input specification and cable standard must match. |
Why connector color is not enough
Colored plugs and similar-looking sockets can encourage guesswork. A cable sold as RGB cannot be assumed to work in a component input, and a component cable cannot be assumed to carry RGB. Match the source output, cable wiring and CRT input as a complete chain. If the television manual uses a different label or groups inputs behind an adapter, follow that model’s pinout and instructions.

When several inputs are available, prioritize the one that your console supports and the candidate CRT accepts for the mode you intend to play. A higher-specification input does not rescue a tube with poor focus or severe geometry errors. Signal compatibility is a gate; picture condition is the next gate.
Confirm 240p behavior on the exact model
Many classic consoles use 240p-style output. CRT televisions do not all process that signal identically, even when they share an input type. One model may display it as intended, another may roll, blank, show an unstable image or otherwise mishandle it. Treat 240p as a model-specific question, not a guarantee attached to “CRT,” “component” or a brand reputation.
Use documentation as a first filter
- Find the complete model number, including regional suffixes.
- Download or consult the owner’s manual and input specifications for that exact model.
- Look for supported video modes and notes about the relevant input.
- Search for model-specific reports only as a supplement; a report about a similar-looking set is not proof for yours.
If the documentation is silent, plan an in-person test. Bring the console that matters most, boot a game with a stable image and leave it running long enough to reveal intermittent rolling or sync loss. If you cannot test and 240p is essential, price the set as uncertain rather than assuming compatibility.
Inspect the live picture before paying
The condition of the individual tube outweighs a model’s reputation. Vintage and Retro’s inspection checklist recommends evaluating the live image, and the same principle applies whether you are buying from a shop, a local listing or a private seller. Use your own console or a known test pattern whenever possible.

Stability and sync
- Start at a console menu or test screen with large, steady areas.
- Watch for rolling, flickering, periodic brightness changes, dropouts or a picture that loses sync when the source changes screens.
- Switch through the CRT’s relevant inputs and confirm that the image returns reliably after each change.
- Let the set warm up for several minutes; note faults that appear only after it has been operating.
A momentary change while an input switches can be normal, but a persistent or recurring unstable image is a reason to reject the unit or obtain a professional assessment before purchase.
Geometry
Geometry is the shape and placement of the raster. Display a grid, a game with straight lines or a test pattern and inspect all edges. Look for a tilted picture, bowed sides, uneven borders, corners that pull inward or outward, and lines that curve when they should be straight. Small imperfections are common on aging CRTs; decide in advance what you can tolerate at your normal seating distance. Severe distortion across the play area is not corrected by buying a different cable.
Focus and sharpness
Read small menu text and examine fine pixel edges. A focused tube should keep detail reasonably crisp from the center toward the corners. Look for a permanently soft image, smeared highlights, halos around bright objects or corners that are markedly less sharp than the center. Compare several screens or games if possible; a deliberately soft artistic image should not be mistaken for a focus fault.
Color and brightness
Check white, gray, black and saturated colors. Watch for a color cast over the whole screen, a corner that is tinted, blacks that look lifted, highlights that bloom excessively or brightness that changes across the raster. Enter the television’s picture controls and make sure the image can be adjusted without an obvious color channel failing. Do not judge color from a single game whose palette may be intentionally stylized.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConvergence
Convergence describes whether the red, green and blue images meet at the same location. A grid or white text on a dark background makes errors visible: colored fringes on vertical or horizontal edges indicate misalignment. Inspect the center and all four corners, because a set can be acceptable in the middle and visibly misregistered at the edges. Minor edge error may be tolerable; broad colored shadows around text and sprites indicate a more serious alignment problem.
Compare the screen at your actual viewing distance
Stand or sit where you will normally play, then repeat the inspection. A defect that is obvious from a few inches away may be irrelevant across a room, while a large geometry or convergence error remains distracting at any distance. Evaluate the complete picture rather than one close-up corner.
A practical on-site test procedure
Ask the seller for enough time to connect and operate the set. If a seller will not permit a basic picture test, include that uncertainty in your decision and be prepared to walk away.

- Identify the unit. Photograph or write down the exact model and confirm that the controls and remote needed for input selection are present.
- Inspect the exterior. Look for impact damage, a cracked screen or case, missing controls, corrosion around connectors and signs that the chassis has been opened or stored in damp conditions.
- Connect a known source. Use the cable that matches the console output and the CRT input. Avoid testing through an unverified chain of adapters if the goal is to judge the television.
- Check startup. Note how the set powers on, whether it emits unusual sounds or smells and whether the image appears consistently.
- Run a stable screen. Use a menu, pause screen or test pattern to examine stability, geometry, focus, color and convergence.
- Play several scenes. Scroll horizontally, display bright and dark areas and view text near the edges as well as the center.
- Change inputs and modes. Switch among the inputs you will use and restart the console. Confirm that the set reacquires the signal without repeated manual intervention.
- Let it warm up. Continue for several minutes and repeat the checks for faults that emerge with temperature.
- Record defects. Take photos from your normal viewing distance and write down which input and console produced each symptom.
- Decide before negotiating. Separate acceptable age-related wear from defects that would stop you using the CRT. Do not let a low asking price substitute for a working test.
Fit the screen to your room and transport plan
A larger CRT can suit a larger room and viewing distance, but size brings bulk and weight. Exact dimensions and mass vary by model; broad claims about one “typical” CRT size or weight should not be applied to every television. Use the candidate’s manual or manufacturer documentation for the actual measurements.
Measure the complete route
- Measure the doorway, hallway, stairwell, turns and the final stand or shelf.
- Allow clearance for the television’s deepest point, not just the visible screen width.
- Plan how two or more people will lift it without carrying by the neck, controls or speaker grilles.
- Confirm that the destination floor and furniture can support the documented weight.
- Keep ventilation openings clear and leave enough room to connect cables without bending them sharply.
Do not rely on a generic stand rating. Check the stand and the CRT as a pair, including the footprint and how the weight is distributed. If you cannot establish a safe route or support surface, the set is not a practical purchase regardless of picture quality.
Buy cables that match both ends
Cable selection follows the exact output on the console and the exact input on the television. For S-Video, both the console (or its adapter) and the CRT need compatible S-Video connections. Sony describes S-Video as a legacy connection with separate luminance and color paths; that description does not make an S-Video cable interchangeable with RGB or component wiring. See Sony’s input guide before ordering.
Cable checklist
- Read the console’s output specification and identify whether the cable is direct or uses an adapter.
- Read the CRT manual to confirm the input type and any shared audio/video jack arrangement.
- Match connector gender, pin count and signal standard at both ends.
- Verify that left and right audio are included if the cable carries them separately.
- Bring the intended cable to the test so a faulty or miswired lead does not make a good CRT look defective.
If your console and CRT both support S-Video, a compatible S-Video cable is a sensible accessory. Choose it only after confirming the connector and signal standard; the existence of an S-Video socket alone is not enough.
Compare two CRT candidates with a weighted decision sheet
When two sets both work, compare evidence rather than reputation. Score each candidate on the criteria below, then apply your own priorities. The table deliberately leaves market price open because a fair used price depends on location, listing and verified condition.
| Criterion | Candidate A | Candidate B | How to decide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Console and signal compatibility | Record tested inputs and modes | Record tested inputs and modes | Reject a set that cannot display a required console mode, especially 240p. |
| Picture stability | Pass, minor issue or fail | Pass, minor issue or fail | Prefer the unit that remains synchronized through startup, input changes and play. |
| Geometry | Document tilt, bowing and edge behavior | Document tilt, bowing and edge behavior | Choose the distortion you can live with at your normal distance; severe defects are a no. |
| Focus and convergence | Center and corner observations | Center and corner observations | Prefer consistent detail and aligned color edges across the screen. |
| Color and brightness | Neutrality, blacks and blooming | Neutrality, blacks and blooming | Favor the set with even, adjustable output and no persistent cast. |
| Practical fit | Dimensions, weight and route | Dimensions, weight and route | Reject any unit that cannot be moved or supported safely. |
| Cost and uncertainty | Asking price and unverified risks | Asking price and unverified risks | Local used-market value is not established without a location and listing; pay for verified condition, not a badge. |
Use a veto-first method
First eliminate any candidate that fails a required signal, has an unstable picture, cannot be transported safely or has a defect you already know you will notice. Only then use secondary preferences such as screen size, input convenience or a lower asking price. This keeps a cheap but incompatible set from winning on price alone.

When a repair or professional inspection makes sense
A local CRT inspection or repair service can help when a promising set has a visible fault that you cannot diagnose safely. Describe the symptom precisely—such as corner convergence, a persistent color cast or intermittent sync—and provide the model number and input used. Do not open the chassis casually: CRTs contain high-voltage components that can remain hazardous even when unplugged. If the seller will not allow a picture test and you cannot budget for a professional assessment, choose a tested alternative instead.
A final pre-purchase checklist
- Every intended console and output mode is listed.
- The exact CRT model’s documentation has been checked.
- Required 240p behavior has been verified or explicitly treated as uncertain.
- The source, cable and television input are confirmed as the same signal standard.
- The live image is stable after startup, input changes and warm-up.
- Geometry, focus, color and convergence have been checked in the center and corners.
- The screen size suits the room and viewing distance.
- Dimensions, weight, route and supporting furniture are safe for the exact unit.
- The asking price reflects verified condition and any unresolved risk.
- You have a return, repair or walk-away plan if the set fails after transport.
Verdict
Buy the CRT that passes your signal test and picture inspection, not the one with the most impressive label. Compatibility with your consoles comes first; stable synchronization, acceptable geometry, focus, color and convergence determine whether the set will be enjoyable; safe handling and a realistic price determine whether it is practical. Confirm each cable and input at both ends, and leave an untested or visibly unhealthy tube behind unless you are deliberately buying a repair project.
