The most useful checks are regional capacity utilization, actual sales versus guidance, the assumptions behind cost expectations, and whether announced capex has become operating capacity. Management described better profitability as conditional and did not provide EBITDA or selling-price forecasts.
Start with capacity: installed is not the same as utilized
Shree Cement’s investor page reports cement production capacity of 69.30 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) for FY2025-26, the year ended March 31, 2026. That is installed capacity, not proof that plants ran at that rate or were fully utilized. The company’s investor page also shows capacity rising from 25.60 MTPA in 2015-16 to 69.30 MTPA in 2025-26; this historical company-published comparison is context, not a forecast.

On the July 31, 2026 call, management reported Q1 FY27 utilization of 62% overall. Regional utilization differed:
| Region | Q1 FY27 utilization reported on the call | Context given by management |
|---|---|---|
| North | 66% | Regional growth and operating conditions differ; compare subsequent periods. |
| East | 60% | Coal-quality and conversion-factor constraints held back performance. |
| South | 57% | A new plant and sales into Maharashtra and Gujarat supported growth. |
These figures describe utilization in the quarter, not permanent regional capability. When comparing regions or quarters, account for additions that may still be ramping and for differences in operating constraints.

Separate market demand from Shree Cement’s own sales
Management described demand as “okay” on July 31 and said sales for that month were 3.1 million tonnes. It also estimated pan-India industry growth at about 7% to 8% and maintained FY27 India sales guidance of 40 million tonnes. These figures answer different questions: July sales are a company-reported monthly figure, the industry growth rate is management’s estimate, and the 40-million-tonne figure is full-year company guidance—not a reported result.
As quarterly results arrive, compare actual company sales with the full-year guidance and consider seasonality rather than treating one month or one quarter as a full-year run rate. Management also emphasized profitability over pursuing volume at any cost.
Read cost commentary driver by driver
For Q1 FY27, management said fuel cost was ₹1.95 per kCal, above the prior expectation it had cited, and described fuel cost as near a peak. It said contracted lower-cost petcoke had begun arriving and packing cost had started to decline. These are reported cost conditions and management commentary, not a guaranteed margin forecast.
When the company discusses whether costs may stabilize or profitability may improve, check the assumptions behind that view. Management tied its expectation to input costs behaving as anticipated and no material disruption in the Middle East. Track the specific drivers it discussed or that affect the cost bridge:
Rank #3
- Fuel and petcoke: compare unit fuel cost with procurement mix and the timing of contracted supplies.
- Raw materials and gypsum: note changes in input cost and availability.
- Packaging: distinguish a stated reduction from a broader claim about total costs.
- Freight and power: look for reported changes and their contribution rather than assuming a direction.
- Conversion factor and product or trade mix: these can affect how operating performance and unit costs compare across periods.
A useful comparison records both the unit cost and management’s stated reason for its movement. The call discussed gypsum, conversion factor and fuel mix, but management did not offer a guaranteed margin outcome.
Distinguish capex plans from capacity that is operating
Management maintained FY27 India capex guidance at about ₹1,500 crore and said approximately ₹456 crore had been spent in Q1. The ₹1,500 crore guidance applies to India operations. UAE expansion was described separately as underway; management did not give consolidated capex guidance on the call.
Rank #4
The North-East project discussion also requires care in interpretation. Infrastructure is being designed with potential eventual capacity beyond the first 1 MTPA, while the executive described the initial unit as a way to test the market. Neither the broader potential nor project spending is commissioned output. To assess progress, follow spending alongside construction, commissioning dates and utilization after start-up.
Keep the outlook conditional—and do not infer a forecast management declined to give
Ashok Bhandari said management expected better profitability if conditions remained calm and input costs behaved as anticipated. He also explained why the company did not publish EBITDA projections: “We never give any EBITDA projections or anything because it is not in our hand. It is market related.” This is management’s explanation, not independent confirmation of future profitability.
Best Value
On selling prices, Bhandari said: “I have never in my 40-year career taken a call on how the selling price will be. Sorry. It’s a market-related activity. I don’t take a call. I don’t want to take my investors up the garden path.” His point was that pricing depends on the market; the statement should not be read as a price forecast.
For a clear earnings-call note, label each item as a reported result, a management estimate, guidance, a project plan, or a conditional outlook. That prevents a market-growth estimate from becoming a company sales result, or a capex plan from being mistaken for operating capacity.
