Choose by usable dimensions and airflow first; treat storage, cable routing, style, and appearance as secondary constraints. A cabinet can hold a console physically and still be unsafe or frustrating if it traps heat or blocks service access.
Start with the equipment, not the advertised screen size
Furniture listings often lead with a television size such as “up to 65 inches.” That number describes the top surface or the width of the television, not the console compartment. Your console, power brick, HDMI cable, controllers, charging dock, games and networking equipment all compete for space. Measure the equipment you will actually install before comparing stands, cabinets or desks.

Measure every device in its intended orientation
- Measure width, height and depth. Include feet, stands, detachable drives, rear protrusions and any external power supply. Record the dimensions with the console standing vertically or lying horizontally, whichever the manufacturer permits and you plan to use.
- Measure connection space. Add the room needed for power, HDMI, Ethernet, USB and antenna plugs. A shelf that matches the console’s body depth may still be too shallow once a stiff cable has to bend behind it.
- Measure accessories that need a permanent home. Include a charging station, headset hanger, motion-camera unit, extra controller, game cases and a streaming or network box if they will share the furniture.
- Measure the room and access route. Check wall-to-wall width, skirting boards, doorways, power-outlet locations and the distance required to pull the unit away from the wall for cleaning or repair.
Compare measurements with usable, not advertised, space
Use the clear opening inside a shelf or cabinet rather than the product’s outside dimensions. Check internal width, height and depth at the narrowest points, then allow for cable bends and ventilation around the device. Confirm the shelf’s supported load and whether a vertical console can stand securely without touching a side panel. If a shelf is adjustable, verify that the chosen position still leaves room for plugs and airflow.

Protect airflow around the console and television
Heat management is a furniture requirement, not an optional extra. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises against placing a game system on a soft surface that can block openings and says a system should not be put in a confined area such as an entertainment unit unless the space is well ventilated. That is general safety guidance, not a universal clearance number for every current console.

Use the manual for the exact model
Console and television vents differ by model and orientation. Before installing anything, find the current manufacturer manual or support page for each device and follow its placement instructions. Keep intake and exhaust openings clear, avoid pressing the device against a back panel, and do not assume that a gap suitable for one generation of hardware is suitable for another. A decorative door, fabric panel or stack of game cases can restrict the same openings that appear clear when the cabinet is empty.
A model-specific television example
Sony’s U.S. support guidance for the KDL-46EX600 television, last modified August 22, 2019, says not to block the vents and gives general guidance of 2–6 inches behind the TV and about 4 inches at its sides. It also warns against a confined cabinet without proper ventilation and directs owners to the television manual for more specific details. Those measurements apply to that television guidance; they are not instructions for a PlayStation, Xbox, Switch or another TV model.
Sony states: “Never place the TV in a confined space, such as a bookcase or built-in cabinet, unless proper ventilation is provided.” Treat that as model-family guidance, not permission to put another device in a sealed compartment.

How to assess an enclosed compartment
- Look for a genuinely open back or documented ventilation openings aligned with the equipment’s intake and exhaust.
- Check that the console’s vents face open space rather than a side wall, door or cable bundle.
- Confirm that doors can remain open during intensive play if the manual requires it, and that doing so does not create a trip hazard.
- Leave enough room to reach the power button, ports and removable storage without pulling the hot device out by its cables.
- Do not cover openings with cloth, foam or decorative inserts, and do not place the console on a cushion or other soft surface.
Historical CPSC incident reporting illustrates why this deserves attention: a December 12, 2006 release cited 226 incidents involving electronic game systems since 2000; 107 indicated overheating or fire, with 15 reported injuries. Those are reported incidents from that period, not a current exposure-adjusted risk rate and not evidence about a particular modern console or piece of furniture.
Make storage useful without sacrificing access
Media furniture can organize consoles, games, controllers and remotes while hiding visual clutter. Furniture guidance from Ethan Allen describes media cabinets as places for televisions and gaming consoles, with media storage, cord organization and ventilation cutouts. A gaming-furniture guide from Herman Miller likewise discusses drawers, shelves, cabinets and cable-management features. These are useful features to look for, but a feature label does not prove that a specific compartment has adequate airflow.
Choose storage by what you reach during play
- Daily-use items: Keep controllers, headsets and charging cables in an open shelf or drawer that can be reached from the seat.
- Occasional items: Store spare controllers, physical games and adapters in a deeper drawer or cabinet, provided the door does not block vents when the console is operating.
- Heat-producing equipment: Give consoles, amplifiers, streaming boxes and network hardware the most open locations. Do not stack devices simply because a shelf is tall enough.
- Service items: Leave a clear path to power strips, HDMI ports and removable storage so a failed cable or update does not require dismantling the entire unit.
Plan cable routing before you load the shelves
Locate the nearest outlet and decide where cables will enter and leave the furniture. Rear cutouts should be large enough for plugs, not just thin cords. Keep power leads and signal cables from forming a tight knot behind a hot device, and avoid routing them across a door hinge or a sharp unfinished edge. A cable channel can improve appearance only if it does not compress the wires or cover a vent. Labeling both ends of uncommon cables makes later troubleshooting and device removal faster.

Match ergonomics to the way you play
Console gaming from a television and console gaming at a desk impose different demands. Evaluate the seat, playing height, arm support, reach to controllers and the actual viewing position rather than choosing furniture from a product photo.

- Desktop depth: Make sure the screen can sit at a comfortable position while leaving room for forearms, a controller, keyboard or charging dock.
- Arm room: Check that armrests do not collide with the desktop and that your elbows can rest without lifting your shoulders.
- Chair support: Herman Miller’s buying guide recommends lumbar support and responsive or adjustable tilt in gaming chairs. It also presents enough desk depth and arm-resting space as useful selection considerations.
- Adjustability: Prioritize seat height, backrest position and tilt that let you change posture during long sessions rather than locking you into one angle.
- Leg clearance: Confirm that drawers, a central support or a computer tower will not obstruct knees and feet.
Herman Miller describes its perspective this way: “Gaming engages the entire body over long periods of time, so human-centered furniture that promotes a healthful posture and provides long-term, adaptive support is indispensable.” That is the company’s buying guidance, not independent medical evidence or a clinical standard.
For a television-and-sofa setup
Assess the real distance and height from the usual seat, the position of the television relative to eye level, and whether the controller can be held with shoulders relaxed. The available sources do not establish one ideal viewing distance or posture for every person and room, so adjust the arrangement to your body, screen size and lighting. A low stand may look tidy but force you to tilt your head; a tall cabinet may put the display above a comfortable line of sight.

A practical selection process
- Inventory the setup. List every device, accessory and cable that must live on or in the furniture.

- Measure the room. Mark outlets, wall obstructions, viewing position, walking paths and the space needed to pull the unit forward.

Buying for the television diagonal alone

Filling every shelf with accessories
Symptom: Controllers and game cases block ports, vents or the cable path. Fix: Reserve the most open area for heat-producing devices and relocate occasional-use items to drawers or a separate storage box.
Ignoring removal and cleaning
Symptom: A cable must be yanked or the entire cabinet emptied to reach one port. Fix: Keep service clearance behind and beside the device, use accessible pass-throughs and leave slack for safe disconnection.
Choosing a chair by appearance

What to search for and what to verify in the listing
The category phrase TV stand with open shelves for gaming consoles is a useful starting point when shopping. Treat it as a search description, not a guarantee. For every candidate, open the specification sheet and confirm the exact shelf dimensions, supported load, orientation, rear openings, cable cutouts and material around the vents. Product photographs rarely show the clearance behind a console or the bend radius of a power plug.
- Save the model numbers of your console and television alongside the furniture listing.
- Sketch the shelf, device footprint and cable path to scale before ordering.
- Prefer a return option when dimensions are close, because nominal measurements can omit trim, hinges or rear braces.
- Re-measure after adding a soundbar, charging dock or second console; each can change airflow and access.
