Before committing an AI workload, ask for evidence that the specific compute capacity you need—accelerator, quantity, region and start date—is reserved and supported by power that is ready. A provider’s grid agreements, clean-energy contracts or future build plans may be relevant, but none alone proves that your workload can start on time or keep running through an interruption.
How much AI capacity can you actually use?
Start with the service you intend to run, not the provider’s largest power or infrastructure headline. Request the accelerator type and quantity available to you, the region, reservation status, and the date the capacity can be used. Ask the provider to distinguish operating capacity from capacity expected later, and to identify dependencies such as construction or approvals that could affect delivery.

The figures in provider announcements can describe different stages of infrastructure. For example, IREN reported approximately 40 MW of operating AI Cloud Services capacity and approximately 5 GW of executed grid connection agreements, letters of agreement or equivalents as of June 30, 2026. The former describes operating AI cloud service capacity; the latter describes grid agreements and equivalents. Neither figure establishes how much compute a particular customer can reserve at a particular location and date. IREN’s FY2026 filing is the company’s disclosure of those figures.

Ask the provider to label each claim as operating, supported by an executed grid connection agreement, under construction, or planned. For each stage, get the relevant site or region, target date, and remaining dependencies. A grid connection agreement is not the same thing as operating power; operating power is not the same thing as customer-usable accelerator capacity.

What does the clean-energy claim mean for your workload?
Electricity availability and energy sourcing are related, but distinct. Microsoft says, “We purchase electricity from local power utilities,” and describes adding carbon-free energy through power purchase agreements (PPAs) and other long-term contracts. Microsoft says it has contracted approximately 40 GW of new renewable energy supply since 2020, with 19 GW online, in its datacenter energy explainer. Those are Microsoft-reported contracted and online volumes, not a statement that a particular site has firm, round-the-clock carbon-free supply. Microsoft also explains that PPAs can help developers finance new projects; a contract by itself does not establish delivery to a specific data center at every hour.
Google describes multiple energy procurement mechanisms and an ambition to match its electricity use with carbon-free energy every hour on every grid where it operates. Its energy page reports nearly 35 GW of new clean energy under more than 240 agreements from 2010 to 2025. That is Google’s cumulative procurement disclosure, not independent verification that all of this energy is online and serving every data center. Google says: “We pay for 100% of the electricity our data centers and offices use, contribute to shared grid infrastructure, bring new resources online, and accelerate emerging technologies—benefitting the whole system.” Google’s energy page provides its account of the agreements and approach.

Ask whether the claim is a goal, annual matching, time- and location-matched supply, or a contract for a project that is not yet online. Find out what generation is online and relevant to the local grid serving the workload. Do not treat an annual clean-energy claim as proof of carbon-free electricity at the workload’s location in every hour.

How will the service handle power interruptions?
Resilience depends on the architecture of the selected service and region, not just on a provider-wide description of its facilities. Microsoft’s documentation describes availability zones with independent power, cooling and networking, and datacenters with dedicated uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and emergency generators. Those protections describe infrastructure arrangements; ask how the specific AI service uses them and what failures its customer-facing service commitment covers. Microsoft’s datacenter architecture documentation describes these arrangements.

Ask the provider to explain which power-interruption scenarios are covered, whether the service spans zones or regions, and what failover behavior applies to your workload. Confirm any customer actions, such as deploying across zones, needed for the protection you expect. Do not assume that a zone or region label by itself guarantees workload continuity.
How should you compare energy efficiency and water use?
Efficiency figures are meaningful only with their reporting period, geography, facility boundary and operating maturity. Power usage effectiveness (PUE) and water usage effectiveness (WUE) figures should not be compared as if they were measured across identical sites or conditions unless the provider establishes that they were.

Microsoft reports the following global figures for FY24 and FY25:
| Metric | FY24 | FY25 |
|---|---|---|
| Global PUE | 1.16 | 1.17 |
| Global WUE | 0.30 L/kWh | 0.27 L/kWh |
These are Microsoft-reported values, not an industry-wide benchmark. Microsoft says the figures cover facilities it fully owns and controls that were operational for 12 months at the time of calculation; it also notes that metrics may change as facilities reach full operating capacity. Ask for the values relevant to the facility or region serving your workload, including the reporting period and sites included. Microsoft’s efficiency methodology and data provide the scope and figures.

Cooling affects how to interpret water claims. Google says it considers carbon-free energy availability alongside responsibly sourced water. It has described air cooling at its announced Texas project as a way to limit water consumption; that is a project-specific example, not evidence that every Google facility uses air cooling. Ask which cooling method serves the relevant site and what water-source and consumption data the provider can disclose. Google’s sustainability page explains its stated considerations, and its June 4, 2026 Texas project announcement describes that project’s cooling approach.

Some providers use demand response—reducing or shifting electricity demand when requested or needed by the grid—as part of their power strategy. Google reported integrating 1 GW of demand-response capacity into long-term utility contracts in the United States, using the ability to limit or shift some machine-learning workloads. Michael Terrell, Google’s Head of Advanced Energy, said, “Demand response enables our data centers to be valuable assets for the power grid.” The announcement does not establish that a particular customer’s workload will be shifted or that its service terms permit it. Ask whether your workload can be curtailed, deferred or relocated, what notice and customer controls apply, and which performance or service commitments remain in force. Google’s March 19, 2026 announcement describes the program.
What to request from each provider
Use the same questions for every candidate, and record answers for the service and region you are actually considering. Provider sustainability figures are company disclosures; treat them as attributed claims, not independent verification.
