What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose the TV and soundbar as one system, not as unrelated purchases. Start by matching the exact audio ports and supported formats, then check Dolby Atmos compatibility, channel layout, physical fit, placement and any brand-specific features. Model numbers, regional versions and software can change what works, so confirm every important feature in both manuals before buying.
Begin with the connection, not the brand
The most common pairing mistake is buying a television and soundbar that look compatible but cannot pass the audio you want. Write down the exact model number of each device and identify the TV’s audio output and the soundbar’s corresponding input. A television may have HDMI ARC or eARC, optical and Bluetooth, while a bar may support only some of those connections or support different formats on each input.

Samsung’s UK connection table, for example, lists Dolby TrueHD—including uncompressed Dolby Atmos—as supported over HDMI-eARC and not over optical or Bluetooth. That is manufacturer-specific guidance, so use it as a warning to check your own models rather than as a universal rule. See Samsung’s setup table and the manuals for both products.

| HDMI eARC | Confirm that the TV’s labeled eARC port and the soundbar’s eARC port are enabled and that both manuals list the formats you need. | Usually the first connection to investigate when you want the broadest format support or Atmos from compatible sources. |
| HDMI ARC | Check the exact audio formats passed by both devices. ARC and eARC are not interchangeable for every format. | Useful when both devices provide ARC but not eARC, provided the listed formats meet your needs. |
| Optical | Check which formats the TV outputs and the bar accepts over optical; do not assume it carries every format available through HDMI. | A simple fallback when HDMI ARC/eARC is unavailable or occupied. |
| Bluetooth | Verify television and soundbar profiles, pairing behavior and whether the TV allows Bluetooth audio while other outputs are active. | Convenient for basic wireless playback, but not a substitute for a wired high-format connection. |
ARC and eARC ports are usually labeled on the rear or side of the TV. The soundbar may label its port HDMI OUT (TV-ARC), HDMI eARC or a similar variation. Connect the cable to those specific sockets rather than to an ordinary HDMI input. Samsung’s Australian connection guide recommends checking that both devices support ARC or eARC and checking the included cable before buying another one: connection instructions.

Do not assume a cable fixes an incompatibility
An HDMI cable cannot make a TV support a format that its hardware or software does not provide. First check the box contents and manuals; buy a replacement only when the supplied cable is missing, damaged or unsuitable for the required connection. Keep the cable run short enough to route safely and avoid sharply bending it behind a wall-mounted screen.
Treat Dolby Atmos as an end-to-end requirement
Atmos is not guaranteed merely because a soundbar has an Atmos logo. The television, soundbar, source device or app, content and connection path all need to support the intended signal. A streaming app, game console or disc player can have different output settings, and a TV may convert or limit audio before it reaches the bar.
Samsung’s US support instructions for its described soundbar setup state that Dolby Atmos works through an HDMI connection and call for eARC at the TV. Follow the exact model instructions at Samsung’s Dolby Atmos support page; do not generalize that page to every manufacturer or streaming configuration.

- Confirm that the soundbar specification lists Dolby Atmos decoding or playback.
- Confirm that the TV’s exact model supports the required audio output and has the needed ARC or eARC port.
- Check the source device and the app or disc for Atmos content and an Atmos output setting.
- Use the connection path specified by the manuals, normally the TV’s labeled ARC/eARC port when the TV is passing source audio to the bar.
- After connecting, select the soundbar as the TV’s audio output and set digital audio output or pass-through according to the TV manual.
- Play a known compatible title and check the soundbar’s information display or app, if provided, to confirm the incoming format.
If any link in that chain lacks Atmos support, the system can still produce sound, but it may receive a different format. Do not promise an Atmos experience based only on a product-family name.
Choose the channel layout for your room and priorities
Channel labels describe how many speaker channels and height or surround channels a system is designed to use. A 3.1.2 system, for example, indicates a three-channel front stage, a subwoofer channel and two height channels. Higher numbers can mean more included channels or speakers, but the label alone does not prove that one bar will sound better in your room.
Match the layout to what you watch
- Dialogue-focused television: Prioritize a clear center channel, a dialogue or voice mode and the ability to adjust center level. Verify those controls in the specification or manual.
- Films and immersive shows: Consider a bar with a listed height or surround layout, a compatible subwoofer and an Atmos-capable signal path if your sources provide Atmos.
- Sports: A wide front stage and intelligible commentary may matter more than maximum channel count. Look for independent voice-level adjustment and a placement that faces the seating area.
- Gaming: Check the TV’s gaming connections and audio pass-through behavior, then confirm that the bar accepts the formats your console or PC outputs.
- Music: Compare listening modes, music input options and whether the subwoofer or rear speakers can be placed without overwhelming the room.
Manufacturer buying guidance advises considering room space and viewing habits when selecting a configuration. It does not establish a universal performance ranking. Use the channel figure as a description of the hardware, then judge whether you can place and power all of the included components.

Measure the television area and every speaker location
Before ordering, measure the stand or wall area where the bar will go. Record the soundbar’s width, height and depth, then check screen clearance, cabinet overhang and the location of the TV’s infrared sensor. A tall bar can cover the bottom edge of a screen or block the sensor used by the TV remote.
Recommended Free Tools
| Physical check | Why it matters | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Width | A bar must fit the stand or chosen wall section without unstable overhang. | Measure usable width, not just the TV’s advertised diagonal size. |
| Height and viewing angle | The bar can obscure the lower picture area or interfere with a wall mount. | Measure from the stand surface to the bottom of the display and follow the TV and bar clearance diagrams. |
| Depth and cable bend | Rear ports and cables need room; a deep bar can sit partly off a shallow cabinet. | Leave space for connectors and route cables without crushing them. |
| Subwoofer position | The subwoofer needs floor space, a power outlet and a wireless or wired link that remains reliable. | Reserve a location near an outlet where it will not block a doorway or vibrate against loose furniture. |
| Rear speakers | Surround modules require stands, wall space, power and a clear path to the seating area. | Plan both speaker positions before choosing a package that includes them. |
| Remote and sensors | A bar or wall mount can block the TV’s IR sensor or a soundbar display. | Check sensor locations in both manuals and test remote operation after installation. |
Installation type and TV-size compatibility are selection factors in Samsung’s buying guide: soundbar buying guidance. There is no universal rule that a soundbar must be narrower than the TV; stable support, unobstructed sensors and an appropriate listening position are more important than matching widths.
Separate standard compatibility from brand-specific features
Q-Symphony is an optional Samsung-only consideration
Samsung describes Q-Symphony as simultaneous playback through a compatible Samsung TV and soundbar or wireless speaker. The feature has model and connection restrictions, and availability can differ by year and region. If this synchronized playback matters to you, verify that both exact model numbers appear on the compatibility list and follow the setup instructions for the TV year. The July 17, 2024 instructions for 2024 Samsung Smart TVs are here: Q-Symphony setup guidance.

This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
- HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
Q-Symphony is not required for ordinary TV-and-soundbar use. A different-brand TV and bar can work through standard HDMI ARC/eARC, optical or Bluetooth connections when their manuals list matching support. Do not expect a proprietary synchronized-speaker mode to operate across brands or across generations unless the manufacturers explicitly list it.

A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Copy the full TV model number, including regional suffixes, from the settings menu or rear label.
- Locate the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port and read the audio-output section of its manual.
- Copy the full soundbar model number and confirm its HDMI, optical, Bluetooth and any Wi-Fi inputs.
- List the formats supported on each device and on each relevant input; do not infer support from the product family name.
- Decide whether Atmos is essential. If it is, verify the TV, bar, source and content path together.
- Measure the stand or wall area, screen clearance and cable route.
- Plan positions and power for the subwoofer and any rear speakers before selecting a larger package.
- Check whether the bar blocks the TV’s IR sensor, screen edge or wall-mount hardware.
- Confirm whether the required HDMI cable is included and suitable before adding an accessory.
- For a same-brand feature such as Q-Symphony, verify compatibility by exact model and region rather than by logo.
Connect and configure the system
- Turn off the TV and soundbar, then connect the cable from the TV port labeled HDMI ARC or eARC to the soundbar port labeled HDMI OUT (TV-ARC/eARC).
- Reconnect power and select the soundbar’s HDMI input if it does not switch automatically.
- Open the TV’s sound settings and choose the external soundbar or receiver as the audio output. Menu names differ by manufacturer.
- Enable HDMI-CEC if the manual requires it for power and volume control over HDMI.
- Set digital audio output to the mode recommended by the TV and soundbar manuals; use pass-through or a compatible bitstream option only when both devices support it.
- On the source device, enable its supported surround or Atmos output and select a title known to carry that format.
- Confirm that volume buttons operate the bar and that the TV speakers are not playing at the same time unless you intentionally enabled a compatible synchronized-speaker feature.
- If HDMI is unavailable, connect optical and select optical output on the TV, then verify which formats remain available. Pair Bluetooth only after checking its profile and latency behavior.
Troubleshoot by symptom
No sound over HDMI
- Recheck that the cable is in the TV’s ARC/eARC port, not a standard HDMI socket.
- Set the soundbar to its TV-ARC/eARC input and restart both devices after changing the TV output.
- Try the cable supplied with the bar or a known-good replacement, then consult both manuals for HDMI-CEC requirements.
Sound works but Atmos does not appear
- Confirm the title or game actually provides Atmos and that the source output is enabled.
- Check whether the TV is converting audio or whether the chosen optical or Bluetooth path cannot carry the desired format.
- Verify that the TV’s ARC/eARC setting and the bar’s format information match the instructions for the exact models.
The remote or picture is obstructed
- Raise or reposition the TV, lower the bar using an approved mount, or move the bar forward if the stand allows it.
- Retest the TV’s infrared sensor and inspect the wall-mount clearance diagram before drilling new holes.
Wireless subwoofer or rear speakers drop out
- Confirm that each module is powered and paired according to its manual.
- Move modules away from enclosed cabinets, heavy obstructions and sources of wireless interference, while keeping the manufacturer’s placement distances.
- If the room cannot provide safe power and clear placement, choose a simpler package rather than leaving speakers unused.
Make the final decision by priorities, not by the biggest number
For a compact room or a dialogue-first household, a correctly connected bar with clear voice controls may be a better fit than a larger system whose subwoofer and rear speakers cannot be placed properly. For a dedicated film space, an Atmos-capable bar, compatible TV output and planned rear-speaker positions may justify the additional components. For mixed use, favor a system with straightforward input switching, adjustable dialogue and bass, and a connection path that supports the formats your sources actually deliver.
Prices, included accessories and feature names vary by market and model year. Compare the exact regional specification sheets and manuals, and treat promotional bundles or one-time cable inclusions as temporary package details rather than permanent capabilities.
The decision in one sentence
Buy the combination whose exact TV and soundbar models share the required audio port and formats, whose Atmos path works from source to speaker if needed, and whose channels and physical dimensions suit your room; treat proprietary synchronized audio as a bonus only after standard compatibility is proven.
