Choose a room air conditioner by matching its cooling capacity to the space, then check efficiency for the same product class, installation fit, operating behavior, controls and refrigerant. The biggest mistake is buying the largest unit that fits: an oversized AC can cool the air so quickly that it removes too little moisture, leaving the room cold but damp.
The checklist below uses ENERGY STAR guidance and its capacity chart as a starting point. Your room’s ceiling height, sunlight, occupants, kitchen appliances and window or wall opening all affect the final choice.

1. Size the cooling capacity to the room
Room-air-conditioner capacity is stated in BTU per hour (BTU/h). Begin by measuring the floor area of the space you actually want to cool, including separate sections of an irregular room. ENERGY STAR’s chart assumes an 8-foot ceiling, so treat these figures as a starting point rather than a substitute for a building-load calculation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsENERGY STAR’s warning is worth taking literally: “Remember that bigger is not always better!” An oversized air conditioner can cost more, waste energy and provide less comfortable humidity control because its compressor shuts off before the room has been dehumidified.

These recommendations come from ENERGY STAR’s current room-AC buying guidance; the criteria page identifies the applicable requirements as effective October 30, 2023. See the full guidance at ENERGY STAR’s Room Air Conditioners guide.
Adjust the starting number for room conditions
- Heavy shade: reduce the capacity by 10 percent.
- Very sunny room: increase the capacity by 10 percent.
- More than two regular occupants: add 600 BTU/h for each additional person.
- Kitchen: add 4,000 BTU/h.
Ceiling height above the chart’s 8-foot assumption, unusually leaky construction, connected open rooms or significant heat-producing equipment can make the chart less reliable. If the calculated result falls between models, do not automatically round up to the biggest available unit; consider a professional load assessment or ask the manufacturer which tested capacity applies to your layout.
2. Compare efficiency using the right metric
For room ACs, the relevant headline measure is the Combined Energy Efficiency Ratio (CEER). It accounts for cooling output in relation to electricity use while incorporating standby and off-mode energy. A higher CEER generally indicates better efficiency, but ENERGY STAR’s thresholds vary with capacity and physical design.
The criteria distinguish, among other categories, units with louvered versus non-louvered sides and casement designs. Comparing a CEER from one category with a value from another can produce a misleading conclusion. Use the current thresholds and the certified-product database in ENERGY STAR’s Room Air Conditioners Key Product Criteria, then compare models with the same capacity range and design.
What an ENERGY STAR label tells you
Certification means the model met the program’s applicable efficiency requirements. ENERGY STAR identifies high-efficiency compressors, fan motors and improved heat-transfer surfaces as design elements that help certified units qualify. Its criteria also describe energy-saver mode and a filter reminder. Those features can reduce wasted run time or help maintain airflow, but the label does not predict your exact electricity bill.

Electricity cost depends on your rate, thermostat setting, weather, hours of operation, insulation and maintenance. The available guidance does not establish a universal annual cost or a guaranteed saving for any particular model.
3. Decide whether variable-speed operation is worthwhile
A conventional compressor generally switches between full output and off. A variable-speed compressor can change motor speed and regulate cooling more continuously. ENERGY STAR says this behavior can support quieter operation and energy savings because the unit avoids as many abrupt starts and stops.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThose are general benefits, not a measured promise for every product. Check the individual model’s documentation for its compressor description, sound ratings and control behavior. A variable-speed design may cost more initially, so it is most relevant when you value steadier temperatures, lower cycling noise or long operating hours.
4. Verify the window, wall and sealing requirements
Measure the actual opening before shopping. Record the opening width and height, sill depth, frame type, nearby obstructions and whether the window slides vertically or horizontally. For a through-wall installation, confirm the wall sleeve or opening dimensions and whether the model is approved for that construction; a window unit is not automatically suitable for a wall.
Conventional window units
Traditional units sit in the opening with side panels or a frame. They need a secure support surface, a way to drain condensate, and a seal around the remaining gaps. Confirm that the installation leaves the sash and safety hardware in the position required by the manual.

Casement and through-wall designs
Casement models are made for windows that open sideways and therefore use a different installation arrangement. Through-wall models require a correctly sized opening and weatherproofing. Do not assume that a listed BTU capacity means the unit will fit your structure.
U-shaped and saddle-style designs
Some newer window ACs bracket the sill or window so the sash can remain operable in many installations. Their compressor sits outside the room, which ENERGY STAR associates with a less obstructed view and lower indoor noise. Window dimensions, sill strength and the permitted opening angle still vary by product, so follow the exact installation instructions.
Use every insulation panel, foam strip and sealing material supplied with the unit. ENERGY STAR’s Most Efficient guidance illustrates the consequence of poor sealing by saying an improperly installed room AC can leak as much air as a 6-square-inch hole. That is an illustration of installation leakage, not a measurement that applies identically to every home. Read the installation manual before lifting the unit into place.
5. Choose controls and convenience features for a real use case
Start with the controls you will actually use. A basic unit may provide a thermostat, fan speeds, a timer and an energy-saver mode. A connected model may add remote control, schedules, notifications or energy-use feedback through an app. Check the exact model’s supported operating systems, account requirements, Wi-Fi band, offline controls and whether schedules continue when the internet is unavailable.
Consider where the display and remote sensor are located. A sensor near a hot window can read differently from the center of the room. If the AC is installed near a corner, airflow direction matters; ENERGY STAR specifically advises considering how the louvers distribute air in that situation. Confirm that the vents can direct cool air across the occupied area rather than straight into a wall or curtain.

6. Check the refrigerant
If environmental impact is part of your decision, identify the refrigerant on the product specification sheet, not just in a marketing summary. ENERGY STAR names R-32, R-454B and R-290 as lower-global-warming-potential options for room air conditioners. It also notes that R-32 and R-454B are still hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), so “lower GWP” does not mean zero climate impact.
Refrigerant choice can affect service procedures, allowable installation practices and local regulations. Verify the individual model’s refrigerant and use qualified service personnel for any sealed-system work. Do not infer the refrigerant from the brand, capacity or year of manufacture.
7. Match the unit type to the room and building
| Design | Check before buying |
|---|---|
| Standard window | Opening dimensions, sash support, side-panel sealing, drainage and whether the window can be secured safely. |
| Casement window | Side-opening compatibility, the required panel or insert and the manufacturer’s minimum and maximum opening sizes. |
| Through-wall | Approved sleeve or wall opening, structural support, exterior weatherproofing and condensate drainage. |
| U-shaped or saddle-style window | Sill strength, bracket installation, window travel, clearance around the outdoor compressor and the exact permitted dimensions. |
The sources do not establish a complete type-by-type ranking. Compare each design on capacity, like-for-like CEER, fit, sealing, noise behavior, controls and refrigerant rather than assuming one form factor is universally superior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Use this pre-purchase checklist
- Measure the room’s total area and note ceiling height, connected spaces and unusual heat sources.
- Apply the shade, sun, occupant and kitchen adjustments to the ENERGY STAR starting capacity.
- Confirm the required window or wall opening and photograph any trim or obstructions for reference.
- Filter certified products by capacity and design, then compare CEER only within comparable categories.
- Read the installation manual for support brackets, drainage, electrical requirements and sealing materials.
- Decide whether variable-speed operation, remote controls, schedules or energy feedback justify added complexity.
- Check the model’s refrigerant and service instructions if environmental impact or future maintenance matters.
- Before purchase, verify that the unit can direct air where people sit and that its controls match how you operate the room.
9. Avoid common buying and installation mistakes
Buying by BTU alone
Capacity without room size and design context says little about comfort or efficiency. An oversized unit can short-cycle and leave humidity behind, while an undersized unit may run continuously without reaching the set temperature.

Ignoring the opening until delivery day
A unit can have the right capacity and still be unusable if the sash, sill or wall opening is wrong. Measure first and retain the manual’s dimensional requirements during installation.
Leaving gaps around the cabinet
Unsealed gaps admit hot outdoor air and undermine cooling. Install the supplied insulation and verify that panels, foam and brackets are seated as directed.
Assuming a smart feature is universal
Remote control and energy feedback differ by model. Confirm app compatibility, network requirements and basic local controls before paying for connectivity.
10. Check for location-specific rebates
ENERGY STAR’s 2024 partner toolkit says utilities or local efficiency programs may offer rebates for certified products. Availability, dates and eligibility depend on your location and the specific program. Search your utility or government efficiency portal before purchase and confirm whether certification, capacity, registration or proof of installation is required; do not treat a rebate as guaranteed.
A practical decision order
First establish the room’s load and the physical opening. Next compare certified models within the same capacity and design category using CEER. Then inspect compressor behavior, controls, airflow, refrigerant and installation materials. This order prevents a convenient feature, an impressive capacity number or an attractive label from overriding the two constraints that determine whether an AC will work: sufficient but not excessive cooling and a properly sealed, compatible installation.
