1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA self-cleaning mop station is useful only when you verify exactly what it cleans and automates. Depending on the model, the dock may wash and dry mop pads, empty dust, refill water, or clean its own washboard; those functions are separate, and none removes every maintenance task.
Choose by matching the dock’s jobs, carpet behavior, navigation, clearance, mop design and remaining upkeep to your home. Manufacturer figures can illustrate capabilities, but they are not interchangeable independent test results.

What “self-cleaning” actually includes
Retail descriptions often compress several dock functions into one phrase. Read the station specification line by line and confirm each job rather than assuming that one feature implies the others.
| Station function | What it does | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Mop-pad washing | Rinses dirt from the pads after a cleaning run or during scheduled cycles. | Whether washing is automatic, whether the dock uses clean water, and how the dirty water is handled. |
| Mop-pad drying | Uses warm or hot air to reduce moisture and odor while the robot is docked. | Drying duration, temperature description, noise, and whether drying starts automatically. |
| Dust auto-emptying | Transfers debris from the robot’s dustbin into a dock bag or container. | Bag or bin capacity, replacement procedure, sealing, and whether emptying can be scheduled or disabled. |
| Water refill | Fills the robot’s onboard tank from a clean-water reservoir. | Reservoir size, refill frequency, dirty-water separation, and any solution restrictions. |
| Washboard or dock cleaning | Flushes or scrapes residue from the tray where pads are washed. | Whether the cycle is automatic, which parts are removable, and which areas still require hand cleaning. |
For example, the Tapo RV70 Omni page lists auto-emptying, mop washing and water fill, and describes a washing-and-drying combination. The Roomba Plus 405 Combo page describes pad washing and drying, debris emptying and a dock self-cleaning cycle. These are useful examples of separate functions, not proof that either dock performs better in every home.

Pad hygiene: drying, heat and access
Wet pads left in a closed dock can become a smell and mildew problem. Drying is therefore more consequential than a marketing label that merely says “self-cleaning.” Look for a stated drying process, a way to inspect the wash tray, and instructions for removing trapped hair or sludge.
Xiaomi’s Robot Vacuum 5 page describes dual scraper arms, hot-water washing and hot-air drying. It specifies washing at up to 80°C and reports a drying rate above 99% after two hours under Xiaomi Internal Labs’ stated conditions of 25°C and 55% relative humidity. Those numbers describe the manufacturer’s product specification and laboratory claim; household humidity, pad material and soil load can change the result.
A dock that washes pads but leaves the tray wet still needs attention. Check whether the washboard lifts out, whether scraper arms are accessible, and whether the manual identifies a cleaning cycle. iRobot says its dock runs a self-cleaning cycle after each pad wash, but you should still inspect seals, drains and corners periodically. Automatic rinsing cannot remove every strand of hair or mineral deposit.

Carpet and mixed-floor behavior
Most homes combine hard flooring with rugs, runners or wall-to-wall carpet. Confirm the robot’s response before buying, because a mop that crosses a rug can spread dirty water and a robot that avoids too aggressively can leave hard floors unwashed.
Pad lifting
Some robots raise the mop assembly when they sense carpet. iRobot describes pads that lift when carpet is detected, and TP-Link describes carpet-aware mop lifting for the RV70 Omni. Ask how high the pads lift and whether the robot can recognize the pile in your home; thick or shag rugs may require a no-mop zone even when the product advertises lifting.

Carpet avoidance and room controls
Other models rely on carpet-avoidance modes, virtual walls, room schedules or manually defined no-mop areas. Xiaomi lists carpet modes and behaviors for the Robot Vacuum 5. In the app, check whether you can set a room to vacuum-only, prohibit mopping on a selected area, and change the order in which rooms are cleaned.
Edge cases to test in your layout
- Low-pile rugs that look similar to hard floors to an optical sensor.
- Rug fringes, tassels and loose edges that can catch a brush or mop bracket.
- Transitions where a raised threshold prevents the robot from reaching a carpeted room.
- Dark, reflective or patterned flooring that may affect sensing.
Do not infer carpet performance from suction power or water temperature. The relevant question is whether the robot’s documented behavior matches your surfaces and the no-mop boundaries you can configure.

Dock automation saves time only if the robot can reliably find every room and return to the station. Compare the navigation sensor, map controls and obstacle handling with the physical layout of your home.
Mapping method
LiDAR can produce room maps and support room-by-room schedules. The Roomba Plus 405 Combo page describes ClearView LiDAR mapping and obstacle avoidance. Confirm whether the app allows room naming, multiple floors, keep-out zones and selective cleaning, rather than assuming every LiDAR product has the same controls.
Objects and cables
Obstacle avoidance is not a guarantee against every toy, cable or pet accident. Review the manufacturer’s list of recognized objects and keep floors clear during the first mapping run. A robot that avoids large furniture but fails to identify thin cords may still need daily pickup.

Furniture clearance
Measure the lowest gap under beds, sofas and cabinets, including the dock’s approach path. Xiaomi describes a retractable radar that lowers for low-clearance areas and states that the Robot Vacuum 5 is intended for spaces higher than 9.5 cm; it also notes that the robot does not enter such areas during mapping. Treat 9.5 cm as that product page’s stated threshold, not a category standard, and measure your own furniture.

A self-cleaning station transfers work; it does not eliminate it. Before purchasing, identify who will perform each recurring task and how supplies will be stored.
- Clean water: Fill the reservoir with the permitted water or cleaning solution and prevent spills around electrical contacts.
- Dirty water: Empty and rinse the recovery tank before stagnant water develops an odor.
- Dust collection: Replace a disposable bag or empty a reusable container before airflow falls.
- Pads: Inspect for embedded grit, wear and poor attachment; wash or replace them according to the model’s instructions.
- Filters and brushes: Remove hair and rinse or replace filters only as the manual permits. A wet filter can damage airflow or create odor.
- Station: Wipe sensors, clean drains and wash the tray even when an automatic dock-cleaning cycle is available.
Usage estimates are not guarantees. Xiaomi says its dust disposal is required every 75 days under its stated usage assumptions. iRobot lists up to 75 days of auto-emptying and four weeks of mopping and pad washing for the Roomba Plus 405 Combo. TP-Link claims up to six weeks without emptying when using its 2.5-liter sealed dust bag. These figures come from the respective manufacturers and depend on debris, pets, floor area, schedules and other conditions; they should not be compared as though they used one test household.
Compare the mop mechanism, not just the dock
Two products can both wash their pads while delivering very different results. Examine how each robot applies pressure, moves across the floor and treats edges.
Rotating or vibrating pads
Multiple moving pads can scrub dried marks differently from a single passive cloth. Check the manufacturer’s description for pad count, movement and whether pressure changes at edges. The mechanism must suit the messes you actually have; a dock cannot compensate for a mop that barely contacts the floor.

Water delivery and solution rules
Look for adjustable water flow, separate clean and dirty tanks, and explicit guidance about detergents. Do not pour a household cleaner into the reservoir unless the manual permits it: excess foam can interfere with pumps and sensors, and an unapproved formula can void support.
Edge and corner reach
Ask whether a pad extends toward walls or whether the robot leaves a deliberate perimeter. A model that cleans the center efficiently may still require a manual pass along baseboards.
Dreame’s robot vacuum and mop comparison illustrates why product families must be compared by exact model: its columns distinguish mop self-cleaning, hot-air drying, washboard cleaning, self-emptying, water and solution refill, navigation and obstacle avoidance. Verify the model and regional listing instead of transferring a feature from one family member to another.
Feature examples to use as a buying checklist
The following products demonstrate the range of specifications you may encounter. They are examples of features to verify, not a tested ranking.
| Example | Documented station or robot features | Questions still open for your home |
|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi Robot Vacuum 5 | Retractable navigation radar; carpet options; hot-water washing and hot-air drying; automatic dust collection. | Will its stated clearance behavior work under your furniture, and which carpets need no-mop zones? |
| Roomba Plus 405 Combo | AutoWash dock; pad washing and drying; debris auto-emptying; LiDAR mapping; obstacle avoidance; carpet-triggered pad lifting. | How often will your household need to empty tanks, replace pads and clean the dock? |
| Tapo RV70 Omni | Auto-emptying, mop washing, water fill, washing and drying, and carpet-aware mop lifting. | What bag, pad and solution consumables are specified for the exact regional variant? |
| Dreame product lineup | Comparison categories include mop self-cleaning, hot-air drying, washboard cleaning, self-emptying, water and solution refill, navigation and obstacle avoidance. | Which exact model column matches the model sold in your country? |
A practical selection process
- Inventory the floor: List hard-floor materials, carpet pile, thresholds, rugs with fringes and areas where water is unacceptable.
- Measure the route: Record doorway widths, threshold heights, the lowest furniture clearance and the space available for the dock, including room to open its tanks or bag compartment.
- Mark the automation you need: Decide whether you need pad washing, drying, dust emptying, water refill, washboard cleaning or all five. Treat each as an independent requirement.
- Check carpet controls: Confirm pad lifting, carpet avoidance, vacuum-only modes and app-based no-mop zones against your actual rugs.
- Audit navigation: Verify mapping, room controls, keep-out features, obstacle sensing and low-clearance behavior for each candidate model.
- Read the care schedule: Identify bag changes, tank emptying, pad and filter replacement, brush cleaning and station washing. If the manual does not explain a task, treat that as a supportability concern.
- Validate the regional model: Compare the exact model number, dock variant, voltage, app availability and consumables sold in your market. Features can differ within one product family.
- Plan the first week: Run mapping with floors picked up, create room and no-mop rules, observe a complete wash-and-dry cycle, and inspect the tray afterward.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Assuming “self-cleaning” means zero upkeep
Fix: Make a written list of tank, bag, pad, filter and station tasks before comparing models. A dock reduces frequency and manual contact; it does not make consumables or inspections disappear.

Comparing headline numbers as laboratory facts
Fix: Keep the qualification attached to every figure. Xiaomi’s 80°C wash and above-99% drying statement, iRobot’s 75-day and four-week estimates, and TP-Link’s six-week bag estimate are vendor claims under stated or implied conditions, not standardized category tests.
Buying for suction or water temperature alone
Fix: Prioritize floor compatibility, pad contact, edge reach, obstacle handling and the cleaning schedule. A high temperature does not establish superior stain removal, and suction does not determine mop performance.
Ignoring the dock footprint
Fix: Measure the station with its tanks, lid and bag door open. Leave a clear approach so the robot can dock squarely and so you can remove dirty water without moving furniture.

Assuming an entire family shares one specification
Fix: Match every claim to the exact model and country listing. Use comparison tables as a starting point, then read that model’s manual and dock specifications.
When a self-cleaning station is worth prioritizing
The feature is most valuable when you mop frequently, have large hard-floor areas, dislike handling dirty pads, or need scheduled cleaning while away. It is less compelling when your home is mostly carpet, the dock cannot fit near a water-resistant outlet, or you are unwilling to empty tanks and clean the station. In those cases, a simpler robot with clear carpet controls may be easier to live with than a more complex dock whose maintenance you will avoid.
Use the station as one part of the decision, not the decision itself: reliable navigation, safe carpet behavior, accessible maintenance and a mop system suited to your floors determine whether the automation remains useful after the novelty fades.
