Choose a portable Bluetooth speaker by matching its size and output to where you will use it, then compare battery claims under their stated test conditions and check the exact dust and water rating. Wattage and driver specifications can help narrow the options, but neither proves how good a speaker will sound. The cited model figures below are manufacturer claims, not independent listening or runtime test results.
Start with where you’ll use and carry it
Think about the listening space and how far you’ll carry the speaker. A compact body is easier to pack or clip to a bag and can suit smaller spaces. A larger speaker may support stronger output and fuller bass, but it takes up more room and is less convenient to transport. LG describes this size-and-bass tradeoff in its Bluetooth speaker buying guide; its examples come from LG’s UAE site, so model guidance may differ by region.

Check actual dimensions and weight rather than relying on the word “portable.” Look for a carry loop or strap if you expect to move it often, and consider whether it fits your bag or intended storage space. For group listening, consider the area the speaker needs to cover; a feature list alone cannot establish how it will perform in your particular room or outdoors.

Compare battery life by its test conditions
“Up to” battery life is a manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee of runtime in ordinary use. Volume, lighting, connectivity, and other settings can change how long a charge lasts. Compare claims only after checking the conditions behind them, and leave a margin above the time you expect to be away from power.

LG’s U.S. category page also lists the Bounce at up to 30 hours, Grab at up to 20 hours, Go XG8T at up to 15 hours, and Go XG2T at up to 10 hours. These are manufacturer ratings; the category page’s figures should not be treated as equivalent test results unless the relevant conditions are stated. Read the precise dust and water rating
Look for the complete IP code, not just a claim that a speaker is “waterproof.” In the cited JBL examples, the Flip 6 is listed as IPX7 and the Charge 5 as IP67. The “X” in IPX7 means no dust-protection rating is specified in that code; IP67 identifies dust-tight protection as well as a water-protection rating. These labels describe particular protection tests, not permission to ignore the manufacturer’s care instructions.

For the LG xboom Bounce, LG says the IP67 result was tested under controlled laboratory conditions to IEC 60529, in fresh water, to one meter for 30 minutes. LG instructs users to dry the speaker before use and not to charge it while wet. What durability testing does—and does not—tell you
LG reports seven MIL-STD-810H test methods for selected models: rain, high temperature, shock, immersion, salt fog, blowing dust, and vibration. LG says the tests were conducted in December 2024 and cautions that real devices may not perform as tested under all conditions. The methods indicate the kinds of tests reported; they are not an unlimited ruggedness guarantee. Check whether the exact model you are considering is included and read its usage instructions. Use sound specifications as clues, not a verdict
Speaker size, driver arrangement, and passive radiators can help you shortlist options, but specifications do not replace listening. Small cabinets face physical limits on deep bass, as LG notes in its buying guide. A larger speaker may be a better fit if fuller bass or louder group listening matters more than easy carry, but the specifications alone do not establish which model sounds better.
Wattage can indicate a speaker’s maximum output, but it is not a sound-quality score or a direct loudness comparison. JBL cautions that a 100 W speaker is not twice as loud as a 50 W one. Check pairing features if you want multiple speakers
If you plan to pair speakers for group listening, confirm the exact pairing ecosystem and compatibility generation. JBL lists Connect, Connect+, and PartyBoost features; their names do not establish cross-generation or cross-brand compatibility. Verify that the precise models support the same feature before buying, using the JBL comparison page and the product documentation.
