If you often listen through a phone’s built-in speakers, compare more than maximum loudness or a “stereo” label. Listen for balanced tone, clear speech, convincing stereo presentation, usable volume at both ends of the range, and distortion or other artifacts—using the same clips and your normal grip on each phone.
What makes phone speakers sound good?
Speaker quality is a combination of traits, not one score or specification. DXOMARK’s playback protocol groups its assessment into five areas: timbre, spatial performance, dynamics, volume and artifacts. That framework is useful for comparing phones, though DXOMARK’s scoring reflects its own test method rather than a universal standard.

- Tonal balance: Listen for whether bass is audible, voices and instruments in the midrange sound clear, and treble avoids excessive harshness. A phone need not reproduce deep bass to sound balanced, but one part of the sound should not overwhelm the rest.
- Stereo presentation: Notice whether sound seems broad and stable, whether voices remain centered, and whether effects have distinct positions. A stereo label alone does not tell you how convincing the presentation is.
- Dynamics: Pay attention to attack, punch and bass precision. These qualities affect whether music and effects feel lively and distinct rather than flat or blurred.
- Volume: Consider both the quietest useful setting and the loudest setting you can use comfortably. Check how consistent the sound remains as you raise or lower it.
- Artifacts: Listen for distortion, harshness, compression or other unwanted changes, particularly at high volume.
How to compare phone speakers in person
- Use the same short clips on every phone. Choose a spoken clip, music you know, and a video or game sample if those are important to you. Different content reveals different strengths and weaknesses; an unrelated store demo is a poor basis for comparison.
- Check speech first. Listen for intelligibility and natural voice tone. Notice whether the voice seems centered or drifts toward one side.
- Listen to music with vocals and varied instruments. Check whether bass is audible, the midrange stays clear, and treble remains comfortable. Consider the overall balance, not just how much bass the phone seems to produce.
- Try video or game audio. Notice stereo width, placement and whether effects remain distinct. If you mostly watch dialogue-heavy video or play games, give those results more weight than music playback.
- Compare quiet, typical and high settings. At low volume, check whether playback remains useful and whether volume steps are manageable. At higher settings, listen for harshness, distortion or a sudden change in balance.
- Hold each phone as you normally would. Try portrait and landscape orientations with a natural grip. Check whether your hand covers a speaker opening or makes one side markedly quieter.
What to look for in speaker reviews
Prefer model-specific reviews that explain what was assessed and under what conditions. Listening impressions are more useful when accompanied by measurements such as frequency response or loudness data, and by notes about distortion, compression or other artifacts. Compare results cautiously if the reviewers used different methods, conditions or scoring systems: no single measurement captures the whole listening experience.
DXOMARK says its smartphone speaker protocol combines objective laboratory measurements with perceptual evaluation. Its overview describes 30 hours of testing per smartphone, including 20 hours of perceptual evaluation cross-validated with objective measurements; these are figures reported by DXOMARK, not an industry-wide testing standard. DXOMARK also says it introduced its smartphone audio protocol in October 2019. That history does not establish that every detail of its current method has remained unchanged. See DXOMARK’s smartphone speaker playback method and its overview of audio testing.

Which speaker qualities should matter most to you?
Weight the comparison by what you actually play. For spoken content, prioritize intelligibility, natural voice tone and stable placement. For music, pay closer attention to tonal balance, dynamics and harshness. For games and video, stereo width and the placement of effects may matter more. Across all uses, check the usable volume range, artifacts at high levels and whether your grip blocks either speaker.
