Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf screen flicker seems to trigger eye strain, compare how a phone controls brightness rather than relying on a label such as “flicker-free,” “DC dimming,” or a single PWM frequency. Ask for measurements at several brightness levels—especially the low and medium levels you actually use—and look at modulation depth and waveform as well as frequency.
Then verify the exact regional model, software version, refresh-rate setting and dimming option. A manufacturer feature statement can identify a setting, but it does not establish how every unit behaves or guarantee relief for an individual user. The most useful test is the phone running your usual apps, brightness and refresh rate during the retailer’s demonstration or return period.

Start with the dimming method, not the marketing label
OLED and other emissive displays must reduce light output when you lower the brightness slider. Two broad techniques are commonly discussed:
Pulse-width modulation (PWM)
With PWM, the display rapidly alternates between a brighter state and a darker or off state. The proportion of time spent lit controls the average brightness. The switching rate is expressed in hertz (Hz), while the size and shape of the light change determine how much modulation reaches your eyes.

DC dimming
DC dimming changes the electrical power delivered to the display, such as voltage or current, so the light output is reduced without using the same on/off duty-cycle method. A phone can still use different control methods in different brightness ranges, and some models combine them. Consequently, a “DC dimming” option or a stated PWM rate describes a feature or operating mode, not necessarily the phone’s complete behavior from minimum to maximum brightness.
Neither label is a medical assessment. People can react differently to the same display, and symptoms can have causes unrelated to flicker. Treat display specifications as buying information, not as a promise that a phone will prevent or treat eye strain.
Which measurements matter when you compare phones?
Independent display measurements are more useful than a vendor’s slogan. A credible report should show what happened at more than one brightness setting and identify the test conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFrequency
Frequency tells you how often a modulation cycle repeats. A higher number means faster cycling, but it does not tell you whether the light output changes only slightly or swings nearly from full brightness to darkness. Two phones with the same frequency can therefore produce very different waveforms.

Modulation depth and waveform
Modulation depth describes the size of the brightness variation. Waveform information shows whether the change is a clean square wave, a smaller ripple, or a more complex pattern. When a reliable measurement includes these data, use them alongside frequency instead of ranking devices on Hz alone.
Brightness range
Ask for readings at minimum, low, medium and high brightness, or at least at the levels you normally use. A display can behave one way near the top of the slider and another way near the bottom. Include adaptive-brightness behavior if you intend to leave that feature enabled.
| Question to ask | Why it matters | Useful report detail |
|---|---|---|
| Was the phone measured at several brightness levels? | Dimming behavior can change as the slider moves. | Exact percentage or luminance for each reading. |
| What frequency was observed? | It identifies the cycle rate but not the complete exposure. | Frequency in Hz, with the instrument and test conditions. |
| How large was the light modulation? | Amplitude can distinguish a small ripple from a large swing. | Modulation depth or percentage, if the method supports it. |
| What did the waveform look like? | Shape can affect comparisons between displays with similar Hz values. | Oscilloscope or photodiode trace, rather than a label alone. |
| Which settings were active? | Refresh rate, color mode and comfort options can alter operation. | Software version, refresh rate, brightness mode and region. |
If a review supplies only one frequency at one brightness, treat it as a snapshot. It cannot establish how the phone behaves during your whole day.
Verify the exact model, region and software
Phone families often have regional variants, panel suppliers or firmware revisions. A setting shown in one market may be absent, renamed or changed in another. Before buying, check the full model number and region, then confirm the option in the current software.

Check the dimming or eye-comfort menu
Look under display settings for names such as DC dimming, flicker prevention, eye comfort or anti-flicker. Record whether the setting is enabled by default, whether it works across the entire brightness range and whether activating it changes color, minimum brightness or automatic-brightness behavior.
Keep refresh rate separate from dimming
A 90 Hz, 120 Hz or 165 Hz refresh rate describes how often the image is redrawn. It is not a measurement of brightness modulation. A phone can have a high refresh rate and still use PWM for brightness, or a lower refresh rate with a different dimming strategy. Check both settings independently.
Look for trade-offs
Some anti-flicker modes can alter color accuracy, black levels, maximum brightness or battery use. Compare the phone with the mode on and off at your preferred brightness. If a feature is available only at a particular refresh rate, decide whether that refresh rate fits your normal use before treating it as an option.

- Set your normal conditions. Disable automatic brightness temporarily, choose the refresh rate you normally use and set the slider to your usual low or medium level. Note whether the room lighting resembles your typical environment.
- Test the relevant modes. Compare the default display with DC dimming, flicker-prevention or eye-comfort options. Wait for the setting to take effect and check whether colors or brightness change.
- Use ordinary content. Read text, scroll a web page, watch a video and use the apps that occupy most of your day. A static white page and a dark interface can exercise different parts of the brightness range.
- Repeat at another brightness. Check the lower level where you normally use the phone at night and a medium level used indoors during the day. Do not assume a comfortable result at maximum brightness represents low-brightness behavior.
- Compare like for like. Keep refresh rate, color mode and ambient lighting consistent when switching between phones. Write down the settings so a later comparison is reproducible.
- Use the return window responsibly. If discomfort appears during normal use, stop the comparison rather than deliberately prolonging exposure. A return test informs a purchase decision; it is not a clinical test.
What current evidence and manufacturer claims actually show
Xiaomi 15: an official DC-dimming statement
Xiaomi’s official support page says, “The Xiaomi 15 adopts DC dimming, which is a method of adjusting screen brightness by controlling the power (voltage or current) supplied to the screen.” You can read the statement at Xiaomi’s Xiaomi 15 dimming-method support page. This confirms Xiaomi’s description of a feature; it is not independent brightness-by-brightness testing, and available sources do not establish measurements for every Xiaomi 15 regional variant. Confirm the exact model and software before relying on the setting.
HONOR: high-frequency PWM claims with a refresh-rate condition
HONOR’s global eye-comfort page advertises ultra-high-frequency PWM dimming at 3840, 4320 and 5280 Hz. The same page says the maximum 5280 Hz figure is effective only at a 165 Hz screen refresh rate. That is a company claim, not an independent ranking of all HONOR phones. Check the exact handset, country version and active refresh-rate setting in the listing and on the device. The claim is described on HONOR’s global AI Eye Comfort Display page; a regional page is also available at HONOR’s South Africa AI Eye Comfort Display page.
A 2025 comparison study
An IEEE conference paper record added to IEEE Xplore on December 31, 2025 describes 45-minute visual tasks on PWM and DC-dimmed displays at 45–55 nits. Its abstract reports that PWM dimming had a significantly greater impact on ocular imaging quality, while an accommodative-convergence (ACC) test found no statistically significant difference in visual-fatigue indices. This was one experiment under stated conditions, not a universal phone ranking or evidence that DC dimming prevents eye strain. The record is at IEEE Xplore’s PWM and DC-dimming visual-function comparison.

What IEEE 1789 does—and does not—mean
The IEEE Standards Association describes IEEE 1789-2015 as recommended practices for modulating current in high-brightness LEDs to mitigate potential health risks to viewers. Its page lists a publication date of June 5, 2015, and an inactivated date of March 26, 2026, with the status inactive-reserved: IEEE 1789-2015. It concerns LED-current modulation guidance, not a phone-specific certification or a guaranteed comfort threshold. A phone listing that mentions IEEE 1789 has not thereby proven its real-world display behavior.

A practical way to compare phones
Use the following framework when you have several candidates. It keeps manufacturer descriptions, laboratory data and your own response separate.
| Comparison axis | What to record | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Dimming method at low and medium brightness | DC mode, PWM mode, automatic switching or not stated. | Identify the mode used where you spend the most time, not only the headline feature. |
| Measured flicker | Frequency, modulation depth and waveform at several luminance levels. | Prefer complete traces and conditions to a single maximum-Hz figure. |
| Availability | Exact model number, region, software build and menu path. | Exclude a feature you cannot enable on your own handset. |
| Display trade-offs | Color, brightness, battery and refresh-rate changes with the mode enabled. | Decide whether the comfort setting remains usable day to day. |
| Your response | What you notice under normal reading, scrolling and video use. | Use the observation to choose, without treating it as a medical conclusion. |
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing the largest Hz number
A high frequency can be useful information, but it omits modulation size, waveform and brightness dependence. Require the rest of the measurement before calling one phone better.
Assuming a mode is always active
Some phones switch methods automatically or restrict a feature to certain brightness or refresh-rate ranges. Verify the on-screen status at the setting you use, rather than relying on the product page.
Confusing a standard reference with a product test
IEEE 1789 is guidance for high-brightness LED current modulation. It does not certify a phone panel, establish a universal safe limit or replace independent measurements.
Comparing the wrong regional review
A review of one panel or firmware version may not describe another market’s handset. Match the model code, region and software, and treat mismatches as unresolved rather than filling the gap with assumptions.
Using refresh rate as a comfort proxy
Refresh rate affects motion presentation; dimming behavior affects light output. Record the two characteristics separately when you compare devices.
Buying checklist
- Find an independent measurement that covers low and medium brightness.
- Record frequency together with modulation depth and waveform when those data are available.
- Confirm the exact regional model, firmware and display menu before assuming DC dimming or flicker prevention exists.
- Check whether the mode changes color, brightness, battery use or available refresh rates.
- Test the phone with your usual brightness, refresh rate, apps and room lighting during a return or demonstration period.
- Do not rely on a “flicker-free” badge, a single Hz figure or a standard citation as proof that symptoms will disappear.
If eye discomfort persists, worsens or occurs with other visual symptoms, arrange an appropriate professional evaluation. A phone comparison can help you identify a display that feels more usable, but it cannot determine the cause of symptoms.
