Compare four things together: measured color gamut in the mode you will use, brightness tested over a comparable screen area, HDR formats that your apps actually deliver, and color-accuracy results that identify their test mode and target. Manufacturer specifications are useful for finding capabilities, but independent measurements are needed to judge how those capabilities behave.
This guide explains how to read each specification, how to compare unlike claims without being misled, and how to choose a display for daylight, video, photography, gaming, or nighttime use.

The four display specifications answer different questions
Color gamut describes how wide a range of colors the panel can reproduce. Brightness describes how much light the screen can produce, usually in nits. HDR (high dynamic range) identifies standards and signal handling for brighter highlights and a wider brightness range. Color accuracy describes how closely the displayed result matches a reference under a stated test condition.
These are related but not interchangeable. A panel can cover a wide gamut yet be oversaturated in its default mode. A phone can advertise an exceptionally high peak brightness that appears only in a small highlight rather than across the whole screen. HDR support can be present while tone mapping, sustained highlights, or app compatibility remain limited. A low Delta-E result can represent excellent accuracy in one mode while another mode on the same phone is intentionally more vivid.

For every number, identify four details: who measured it, which color mode or setting was active, what portion of the screen was tested, and whether the figure is a manufacturer specification or an independent result.
Color gamut: read the reference space and the mode
Coverage is meaningful only with a named color space
A gamut percentage is a comparison with a reference space, most commonly sRGB or DCI-P3. “100% DCI-P3” means the claimed gamut reaches the defined DCI-P3 space; it does not by itself say that colors are accurate, evenly calibrated, or preferable for every type of content. A maker may report coverage, gamut volume, or a related calculation, and those terms are not automatically interchangeable.
For example, Xiaomi’s Philippines product page advertises a “100% DCI-P3 color gamut” for the Xiaomi 17T Pro. That is a vendor specification for the regional product page, not a substitute for an independent measurement. Check the exact model and region before assuming another market’s version has the same panel or calibration: Xiaomi 17T Pro specifications.

Phones commonly offer modes such as Natural, Adaptive, or Vivid. Vivid modes may deliberately extend or exaggerate saturation; Natural modes generally target a less dramatic rendering. A comparison is only fair when the same mode is used, or when each mode is clearly reported.
Tom’s Guide’s 2025 laboratory comparison illustrates the effect. Its results for three phones, including the active mode where a mode-specific value was reported, are shown below. These are measurements from that test, not universal rankings.

| Phone | Brightness measured by Tom’s Guide | DCI-P3 result and mode | Delta-E result and mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 | 1,505 nits | 80.2% | 0.20 |

| Google Pixel 10 Pro | 2,017 nits | 89.5% Adaptive; 76.3% Natural | 0.32 Adaptive; 0.25 Natural |
A measured value above 100% in a gamut comparison does not mean the phone displays “more than all possible color.” It indicates that the tested gamut calculation extends beyond the reference area under that test’s convention. The useful question is whether the mode suits your content and whether colors remain controlled, not whether the percentage is the largest.
Choose a gamut for the content you view
- General web, older photos, and compatibility: sRGB coverage and a well-calibrated Natural mode are usually more useful than maximum saturation.
- Wide-gamut photographs and video: DCI-P3 coverage can preserve more of the source colors when the app and content use that space.
- Creative work: prioritize a documented, repeatable mode and low measured error over a headline gamut percentage.
- Personal preference: Vivid can look more striking, but it may not resemble the creator’s intended colors.
Brightness: separate peak, window size, and sustained output
Why peak nits are not an everyday brightness rating
Brightness is reported in nits (candelas per square metre), but “peak” is a maximum under a particular condition. It may apply to a small highlight, HDR playback, automatic outdoor boost, or a short duration. It does not necessarily describe the brightness of a white webpage covering the entire display.

A 20% APL test uses a smaller bright area; a 100% APL test represents the whole screen. Use the same APL condition when comparing phones, and read the database’s linked methodology and testing conditions before treating values as directly comparable: PhoneArena display test results.
Vendor examples show why definitions matter
| Product page | Published brightness claim | Other context | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi 17T Pro (Philippines page) | 3,500-nit peak | Also lists a 1-nit low setting | Vendor maximum and low-end specification; not a controlled comparison with lab APL figures. |
| TCL 20 Pro 5G | 2 to 700 nits | Dual RGB sensors adjust ambient response and screen color temperature; specifications can vary by country. | A stated operating range, not the same claim as a small-window peak. |
| OnePlus Open | 2,800-nit peak | Published alongside Dolby Vision and 10-bit color support. | A vendor capability example; independent sustained HDR performance is still a separate question. |
Match brightness to your real environment
For outdoor readability, compare full-screen or high-APL measurements made with automatic brightness enabled under the same test protocol. A phone that reaches a spectacular small-window peak may still dim when most of the screen is white or when heat builds up. Also check whether the outdoor boost requires direct sunlight, a light sensor trigger, or a particular display setting.
For indoor use, maximum brightness is less important than usable manual control and stable automatic adjustment. For nighttime reading, the minimum brightness and the quality of dimming matter. A specification such as Xiaomi’s stated 1-nit low setting or TCL’s stated 2-nit lower bound describes the range, but it does not reveal flicker behavior, color shifts, or whether third-party applications can force a brighter overlay.

HDR: treat the badge as a compatibility checklist
Identify the format, bit depth, and content path
HDR support can refer to a format such as Dolby Vision, HDR10, or another implementation. It can also describe panel capability, decoding support, or an app’s certification. Verify that the streaming service, downloaded files, game, and operating-system player you use can deliver that format to the specific phone. A format badge without compatible content may produce no visible benefit.
The OnePlus Open product page is an example of a broad vendor claim: it lists Dolby Vision, 10-bit color, sRGB and DCI-P3, and a 2,800-nit peak. Those specifications establish advertised capability, not measured tone-mapping accuracy, sustained highlight output, or consistency across applications. Read the phone’s support documentation and test the services you actually use: OnePlus Open specifications.
What a good HDR comparison should report
- The HDR formats recognized by the operating system and major video apps.
- Whether the display uses 10-bit processing or a lower-bit panel with dithering.
- Peak and sustained brightness during HDR, with the test window or APL stated.
- Shadow detail, highlight clipping, and tone-mapping behavior in independent measurements.
- Whether HDR remains available at the chosen refresh rate, resolution, or battery mode.
Do not infer HDR quality from peak brightness alone. A phone may hit a high highlight briefly but compress the rest of the image, or it may preserve shadow detail while limiting full-screen brightness to control heat.
Color accuracy: understand Delta-E and the active mode
Lower Delta-E means smaller measured error
Delta-E expresses the difference between a displayed color and a reference under a defined test. Lower values generally indicate closer matching. The number is not a universal grade: the result depends on the target color space, patch set, instrument, viewing conditions, and display mode.
Xiaomi advertises Delta-E below 0.3 and JNCD below 0.3 for the 17T Pro. These are manufacturer claims. Independent databases may report separate color-patch and grayscale results. PhoneArena, for example, publishes RGBCMY and grayscale Delta-E columns, so do not combine one phone’s color result with another phone’s grayscale result as if they measured the same thing: PhoneArena methodology and results.

Use the mode you will actually keep enabled
Tom’s Guide reports mode-specific Delta-E values in its comparison table. The Galaxy S25 Plus and Pixel 10 Pro have separate results for their more vivid or adaptive settings and their Natural settings, while the iPhone 17 is represented by one reported result in that test. The table above keeps those modes visible so a comparison does not silently mix them.
For photo editing or color-critical work, select the phone’s Natural, sRGB, or creator-oriented mode if available, then look for independent measurements made in that same mode. For casual viewing, a higher-error Vivid mode may still be your preference; accuracy is a goal, not a requirement for every user.
How to compare two phones without mixing unlike numbers
- Confirm the exact model. Record the region, storage or carrier variant, software version, and display mode. Regional specifications can differ; TCL explicitly warns that actual features and specifications may vary by country.
- Separate claims from measurements. Put manufacturer peak brightness, gamut, and Delta-E claims in one column and independent test results in another. Never present a vendor maximum as a lab average.
- Normalize the test condition. Match APL or window size for brightness, automatic versus manual brightness, HDR versus SDR content, and ambient-light conditions.
- Compare the same color mode. Natural-to-Natural and Vivid-to-Vivid comparisons are meaningful. A Vivid gamut number against a Natural accuracy number is not a single coherent score.
- Check the reference space. Label every gamut result as sRGB or DCI-P3 and determine whether the source reports coverage or volume.
- Read both color and grayscale accuracy. A phone can track colored patches closely while showing a visible grayscale tint, or the reverse.
- Verify your apps’ HDR path. Open the services and games you use, confirm an HDR badge or playback setting, and check whether battery or refresh-rate modes disable it.
- Apply the result to your setting. Weight high-APL outdoor brightness for sunlight, calibrated Natural accuracy for editing, format support for streaming, and minimum brightness or flicker behavior for night use.
What the published three-phone comparison actually shows
In Tom’s Guide’s October 13, 2025 comparison, the Pixel 10 Pro led the reported brightness test, the Galaxy S25 Plus produced the widest DCI-P3 result when measured in Vivid mode, and the iPhone 17 produced the lowest reported Delta-E. Those are category results from one test with selected modes, not an overall display championship. The same table shows why: changing mode altered both gamut and accuracy, and the brightness test represented that publication’s own protocol.
Use such comparisons to understand trade-offs and methodology. Before buying, look for a review that tests the current software, the regional model you can purchase, and the mode you intend to use. A database entry can also change as testing procedures or firmware change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Streaming movies and games
Confirm the HDR formats supported by your services, then check sustained HDR brightness and tone mapping. Wide DCI-P3 coverage helps only when the content is mastered for a compatible wide-gamut path.
Photography and video editing
Use a documented Natural or sRGB-oriented mode with low color and grayscale error. Keep the mode fixed while comparing phones, and avoid judging editing suitability from a Vivid-mode gamut percentage.
Night reading
Check the stated minimum brightness, but also look for independent observations of dimming, flicker, and color stability. A low numerical floor does not guarantee comfortable output in every application.
Common comparison mistakes and their fixes
- Comparing a maker’s peak with a lab’s full-screen result: label the measurement area and protocol first.
- Assuming 100% DCI-P3 means perfect color: ask whether the result is a claim, coverage or volume, and which mode was used.
- Treating HDR as a picture-quality score: verify format, app delivery, bit depth, tone mapping, and sustained brightness.
- Ranking Delta-E numbers from different tests: compare only when target space, patches, mode, and conditions are aligned.
- Ignoring regional and software differences: verify the SKU and current firmware; official pages can represent one market while retail units elsewhere differ.
- Choosing one winner across all dimensions: decide which condition matters most, because brightness, gamut, HDR behavior, and accuracy can have different leaders.
A practical buying checklist
- Is the gamut figure tied to sRGB or DCI-P3, and does it say coverage or volume?
- Is it a manufacturer claim or an independent measurement?
- Which display mode produced the result?
- Was brightness measured at 20% APL, 100% APL, a smaller HDR window, or another condition?
- Is the brightness sustained or a brief peak?
- Which HDR formats work in the apps and games you use?
- Are 10-bit processing and tone-mapping results documented?
- Does the accuracy test identify target space, color patches, grayscale, instrument, and mode?
- What is the minimum brightness, and has dimming behavior been evaluated?
- Does the specification apply to your country’s model and current software?
Specifications are a starting map, not a verdict. A fair comparison keeps the color mode, screen area, content type, and test method visible from the first number to the final decision.
