Look for accessories that make your phone feel secure without demanding a tight pinch, keep it steady at a comfortable viewing angle, and let you use the touchscreen reliably. There is no universally best case, stand, or stylus for arthritis or tremors: fit depends on your hands, phone, and the way you use it. Check built-in accessibility settings alongside physical accessories, too.
What should you look for in a phone case or grip?
Choose by how the case feels in your hand, not by its appearance or a general claim that it is easier to hold. A case or grip may be worth trying if it helps you keep hold of the phone without a hard pinch or sustained effort.

- Comfortable, secure hold: Try holding the phone as you normally would. Notice whether your fingers can rest around it comfortably and whether keeping it steady takes less effort.
- Manageable bulk: Extra thickness can make a phone easier for some people to grasp, but too much bulk may make it harder to carry or use. Check the actual fit rather than assuming bigger is better.
- Usable controls: Make sure you can reach and press the buttons, connect a charger, and use any ports you need with the case fitted.
- Compatibility: Confirm that the case or grip fits your exact phone model and does not obstruct the screen or accessories you rely on.
These are practical fit checks, not a proven ranking of case designs. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) includes cases among possible augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) accessories and recommends considering accessories with a team. What kind of phone stand might help?
First try setting the phone on a steady table or other stable surface and adjusting your posture and viewing position. If you consider an adjustable phone stand, check that it supports your phone securely and that the viewing angle works where you plan to use it. Consider whether you can place the phone on the stand and adjust it without a difficult grip or complicated setup. A stand can keep the phone from needing to be held while you look at or interact with the screen, but the guide does not establish that any particular design reduces tremor for every user.
What matters when choosing a stylus?
Try the stylus as you would use it: notice whether its grip diameter and surface feel comfortable, and whether you can guide it without pinching tightly. Confirm that it works with your phone’s touchscreen. Common capacitive styluses depend on conductive contact with the screen, so a grip modification must not prevent that contact. Some supported phones, styluses, and apps offer features such as palm and finger rejection, pressure sensitivity, tilt detection, or low latency. Check accessibility settings before buying accessories
Built-in options may change how you interact with the screen or reduce reliance on gestures. Apple groups mobility-related features for iPhone, including Voice Control, Switch Control, AssistiveTouch, and Touch Accommodations. Its AssistiveTouch guidance explains options for adapting touchscreen interaction, replacing gestures that are difficult, and connecting pointer devices. - Start with the problem you want to solve. Is the phone hard to hold, difficult to keep steady, uncomfortable to view, or tricky to control on the touchscreen?
- Try the least complicated change first. Set the phone on a stable surface, adjust its position, and explore relevant accessibility settings.
- Check fit and compatibility. For a case or grip, test holding the phone and using its buttons and ports. For a stand, test placement, stability, and angle. For a stylus, test comfort and touchscreen response.
- Consider setup and daily use. Think about whether you can attach, adjust, carry, and remove the accessory comfortably in the places you use your phone.
- Get individual advice if choosing is difficult. ASHA recommends a team-based approach to accessory selection, including physical and occupational therapy perspectives.
