What to Look for in a Kitchen Appliance Warranty and Return Policy (U.S. Guide)

Check two separate documents before buying a refrigerator, range, dishwasher, microwave, washer, dryer, or other kitchen appliance: the seller’s return policy and the manufacturer’s written warranty. A return policy controls whether you can send back an unwanted or damaged item during a short window; a warranty generally addresses qualifying defects for a stated period and may offer repair, replacement, or a refund. Compare the clock, eligibility conditions, remedy, fees, exclusions, and sales channel, then save the exact terms and record delivery and installation dates.

Return policy and warranty: what each one does

A seller’s return policy is about reversing a purchase. It may require an unopened package, prohibit installation, impose a short deadline, or charge restocking and delivery fees. The seller decides whether the item qualifies under that policy.

A manufacturer warranty is a promise to correct covered defects, usually defects in materials or workmanship. It often starts on the purchase date, but some policies use delivery or another defined event. The warranty may specify parts, labor, in-home service, replacement, or a refund. It does not automatically give you the right to return an appliance simply because you changed your mind.

Those documents can overlap during the first few weeks, but they are not interchangeable. A retailer may direct an opened or installed appliance to warranty service even when its ordinary return period has ended.

Seven checks to make before paying

  1. Identify the responsible seller. Confirm whether the listing is sold and fulfilled by the retailer, sold by a marketplace merchant, or ordered directly from the manufacturer. The same model can have different return rules by channel.
  2. Write down the clock and trigger. Look for “purchase date,” “delivery date,” “accepted delivery,” or another starting point. Note the exact number of days and whether weekends or holidays affect the deadline.
  3. Check the appliance’s required condition. Determine whether opening the box, removing packaging, connecting utilities, running a cycle, or installing the unit ends return eligibility. Find out whether original packaging is mandatory.
  4. Confirm what proof is required. Keep the receipt or order confirmation, model and serial numbers, payment record, and any registration confirmation. A policy can also require that damage be reported within a separate period.
  5. Price every remedy. Read who pays for shipping, pickup, installation or reinstallation, diagnostics, labor, travel, delivery, and restocking. A “full refund” may exclude some of those charges.
  6. List exclusions. Look for misuse, incorrect installation, commercial use, consumable parts, cosmetic damage, accidental damage, altered serial numbers, food loss, and consequential or incidental losses.
  7. Save a copy before delivery. Policies change. Download or print the terms for the exact listing and sales channel, and photograph the appliance, packaging, serial label, and any damage as soon as it arrives.

Compare coverage on the same axes

Use one worksheet for every retailer, manufacturer, or optional protection plan. Comparing duration alone can hide a large difference in what you actually receive.

Axis Questions to answer
Coverage clock How long does coverage last, when does it start, and does an extra period follow the manufacturer warranty?
Covered failure Does it cover defects in materials or workmanship, and which parts and labor are included?
Remedy and decision-maker Who chooses repair, replacement, refund, or store credit? Is service performed in the home?
Return eligibility What deadline, condition, packaging, proof of purchase, seller, and damage-reporting rules apply?
Out-of-pocket costs Who pays shipping, delivery, pickup, installation, reinstallation, restocking, diagnostics, labor, travel, and service fees?
Exclusions and transfer Are misuse, commercial use, consumables, cosmetic damage, food loss, altered serial numbers, or a change of ownership excluded?
Plan overlap Does an optional plan add time or benefits after existing coverage, and what deductible and exclusions apply?

What current U.S. policies illustrate

The following are examples from official pages accessed October 13, 2026. They are snapshots, not a nationwide standard; verify the live terms for your transaction.

Costco major appliances

Costco’s U.S. major-appliance policy, document version 3.0 published March 3, 2026, says returns are accepted within 90 days from the date you receive listed major appliances. The list includes refrigerators over 10 cubic feet, water heaters, washers, dryers, dishwashers, freezers, ranges, cooktops, and over-the-range microwaves.

The same policy says Costco extends the manufacturer’s warranty on those appliances to two years. The second year mirrors the manufacturer warranty, and Costco may meet that obligation through repair, replacement, or a refund up to the purchase price. The policy also names Allstate Protection Plans as an option for extending coverage on some products; the page does not establish that an extended plan is worthwhile for every buyer. Confirm whether your exact item qualifies and who handles service.

Walmart major and small appliances

Walmart’s current U.S. corporate policy gives major appliances a full-refund return window of two days after accepted delivery. It separately describes unopened, uninstalled, undamaged appliances in factory-sealed packaging as returnable up to 30 days after delivery. Marketplace items may incur a restocking charge.

Once a major appliance has been opened or installed and the two-day window has passed, Walmart directs customers to the manufacturer warranty. Small appliances have a different rule: up to 90 days when sold in a store or fulfilled by Walmart, and 30 days for Marketplace sales. These are Walmart-specific examples, not general U.S. rules.

KitchenAid direct-site major appliances

KitchenAid’s U.S. direct-sale policy allows a qualifying return requested within 15 days of delivery without a return fee when the product is new and unused, apart from testing performed by the delivery team. For qualifying returns from day 16 through day 30, it describes a restocking fee of 20% of product cost, with a $50 minimum. Delivery, shipping, and service fees are not refunded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After 30 days, the policy directs customers whose products are still under warranty to request warranty service; fees may apply. The policy applies to direct-site purchases. If you bought the appliance elsewhere, it directs you to that seller, so retain the original order record.

KitchenAid countertop appliances, kitchenware, and tools

A separate U.S. policy provides a 60-day return window for eligible new and unused direct-site purchases. U.S. consumers can call for a return label and receive free return shipping, except for parts and accessories. After 60 days, the page directs customers to warranty service. Do not apply this countertop rule to a major appliance without checking the product category.

IKEA appliances

IKEA’s U.S. appliance warranty says it pays for factory-specified parts and repair labor needed to correct covered defects in materials or workmanship that existed when the appliance was purchased. Major appliances are intended to be repaired in the home.

Listed exclusions include consumables such as bulbs and filters, improper installation, misuse, some cosmetic damage unless reported within 30 days, food loss caused by refrigerator or freezer failure, and pickup and delivery. Some remote areas can also involve travel costs. A warranty can therefore cover a failed component while leaving food replacement, transport, or an installation problem to the owner.

How to handle delivery damage or an early failure

  1. Inspect before accepting when possible. Photograph the carton, straps, corners, appliance panels, serial label, and any visible damage. Keep the packaging until the return or claim is resolved.
  2. Record the dates. Note delivery, accepted delivery, installation, first use, and the moment a problem appeared. These dates determine which clock applies.
  3. Notify the seller promptly. Use the channel specified in the order or policy and describe damage precisely. Ask for a case number and written instructions before moving or uninstalling the appliance.
  4. Choose the correct route. A sealed, unused item inside the seller’s return window belongs with the seller’s return process. An installed item outside that window generally belongs with warranty service unless the seller says otherwise.
  5. Protect the appliance and your records. Follow safety instructions, do not alter the serial label, and keep copies of messages, photos, invoices, technician reports, and shipping receipts.
  6. Escalate with facts. If the first contact cannot resolve the claim, restate the model, dates, policy section, requested remedy, and documented costs. Ask whether the next step is inspection, in-home repair, replacement, or refund.

Exclusions that change the real value

Installation and misuse

Incorrect electrical, gas, plumbing, ventilation, leveling, or mounting work can be excluded even when the appliance itself is defective. Use qualified installation where required, follow the manual, and keep installation records.

Consumables and cosmetic damage

Bulbs, filters, and similar consumables commonly have different treatment. Dents, scratches, and finish damage may be excluded unless reported quickly; IKEA’s example uses a 30-day reporting condition for some cosmetic issues.

Indirect losses

Food spoiled by a failed refrigerator or freezer may not be reimbursed. Delivery, pickup, travel, diagnostic, or service fees can also remain your responsibility even when a covered repair is approved.

Ownership and use

Check whether coverage transfers to a later owner and whether commercial or rental use is excluded. A policy written for household use may not protect an appliance in a business setting.

Should you buy an optional protection plan?

First calculate the manufacturer warranty’s included parts, labor, service location, and remedy. Then compare the optional plan’s added time, deductible, exclusions, claim limit, and cancellation terms. A plan that merely repeats existing coverage may add little value; one that begins after the original warranty and covers a costly component can be materially different. Confirm who administers it and whether it covers installation-related failures, cosmetic damage, food loss, or travel.

What consumer-protection language does—and does not—prove

A Federal Trade Commission decision and order concerning Westinghouse-branded outdoor power equipment required this warranty disclosure: “Taking your product to be serviced by a repair shop that is not affiliated with Westinghouse will not void this warranty. Also, using third-party parts will not void this warranty.” That order concerns the named respondent and product category; it is not a universal kitchen-appliance warranty template. If a dispute turns on federal or state rights, check the law that applies to your jurisdiction or obtain qualified legal advice.

A practical decision rule

  • Choose the seller with terms you can satisfy without risky installation or packaging assumptions.
  • Prefer a longer return period only when the remedy is usable and fees are clear.
  • For an installed appliance, prioritize in-home labor, parts availability, and low service costs over a headline duration.
  • For a marketplace purchase, verify the merchant’s identity and restocking rules before checkout.
  • Do not treat a warranty as insurance against misuse, food loss, cosmetic damage, or every installation expense.

The safest purchase record contains the exact policy, warranty booklet, receipt, model and serial numbers, delivery and installation dates, and dated photographs. Those details let you select the right remedy before a short return window closes.
