Wattage helps indicate available power, but it cannot tell you how many settings the dryer has, whether a diffuser is included, or whether an attachment will fit. Compare those practical details first, then check voltage and the manufacturer’s complete specification.
Start with the four specifications that affect daily use
A hair dryer is easier to choose when you evaluate it as a tool for a particular routine rather than as a single wattage number. Heat and airflow determine how the dryer operates; attachments determine what kind of styling you can do; weight determines how long you can hold it comfortably. A useful listing should state all four clearly.

- Heat controls: Check the number of heat settings and whether there is a genuinely cool setting.
- Airflow controls: Check speed settings and any published airflow measurement.
- Attachments: Match a diffuser, concentrator, comb, or gentle-air tool to your styling task, and verify model compatibility.
- Weight: Compare manufacturer-stated weights only after checking what is included in the measurement.
Lower heat or speed can take longer to dry hair, so the relevant question is not simply “How hot does it get?” It is whether the dryer gives you enough control to choose a slower, cooler approach when that suits your routine and enough airflow when you need to finish faster.
Heat settings: look for control, not a maximum-temperature claim
Count the settings and identify the cool option
Consumer Reports describes heat and airflow as the main mechanisms by which a blow-dryer dries hair. A listing that says only “multiple temperatures” leaves an important detail unanswered. Look for an exact count, such as four heat settings, and determine whether the cool option is a separate setting or a momentary cool-shot button.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact Dryer. Easy, Everyday Use
- 2 Heat/Speed Settings
- Cool Shot Button
- Lightweight & Compact Design
- Removable End-cap for Easy Cleaning
More settings give you more selectable steps, but the number alone does not establish how warm each step is or how evenly the dryer maintains it. Treat the setting count as a comparison point, not a performance guarantee.
Match heat control to your routine
If you regularly dry different sections at different speeds, prioritize a dryer with independent heat and airflow controls. That lets you reduce heat without necessarily losing all airflow, or reduce airflow when you are shaping a section with a concentrator. If you normally rough-dry and stop, a simpler control layout may be sufficient; if you finish with a brush or define curls, precise adjustment becomes more valuable.
The available evidence does not establish a population-wide statistic or a comparative study proving that one heat technology causes less damage than another. Claims about ionic, ceramic, or tourmaline systems should therefore be treated as product descriptions, not as guaranteed outcomes. Compare the actual controls and specifications you can verify.

Airflow and wattage: related, but not interchangeable
What wattage tells you
Wattage is the dryer’s rated electrical power. Consumer Reports quotes Nilofer Farjo, a hair-restoration surgeon based in Manchester, England, and president of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery: “The power of the hair dryer will determine the heat and speed you can achieve.” In the same guidance, Farjo describes 1,800 watts as good for home use.
That 1,800-watt figure is Farjo’s attributed recommendation reported by Consumer Reports, not a universal threshold, laboratory result, or promise that every 1,800-watt dryer will dry faster. A lower-wattage dryer can still offer useful settings, while a higher-wattage model can still be a poor fit if it is heavy or lacks the attachment you need.
What to compare besides wattage
Check the number of speed settings and look for an official airflow specification when one is published. Airflow may be reported in litres per second or another unit; compare values only when the manufacturer identifies the same measurement basis. Do not treat wattage as if it were an airflow rating.

Voltage matters alongside wattage. A dryer rated for 120 volts is not automatically suitable for a different country’s electrical system. Confirm the voltage and plug requirements for the market where you will use it, and do not assume that a travel adapter changes the dryer’s voltage requirement.

Diffuser for curls and waves
For curly hair, Consumer Reports advises making sure the dryer can fit a high-quality diffuser attachment. A diffuser spreads the airflow rather than directing one concentrated stream; Dyson describes its diffuser as helping define curls and waves. The practical buying question is whether a compatible diffuser is included or available for the exact dryer model.
Do not assume that a universal-looking diffuser will fit every dryer. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility list, attachment diameter or connection system, and the model name printed on the dryer. If the listing says only “diffuser compatible” without identifying the supported models, seek confirmation before buying.
Concentrator for directed styling
A concentrator narrows and directs airflow for controlled, section-by-section styling, according to Dyson. It is useful when you want the air aimed at a brush or a particular section rather than spread over a broad area. Check whether the concentrator is included and whether its width or shape suits the way you style.
Wide-tooth comb for curly or coily hair
Dyson describes a wide-tooth comb attachment as designed for curly or coily hair. If that is your routine, compare the comb attachment with a diffuser rather than assuming they serve the same purpose: one is a comb-style tool for working through sections, while the other changes how air is distributed around curls.

Dyson markets a gentle-air attachment for finer hair or sensitive scalps. That is the manufacturer’s intended use, not independent proof of a health benefit. Treat it as an option to investigate if you prefer a softer airflow, and still compare the dryer’s ordinary heat and speed controls.

Attachment compatibility can depend on the exact model
Compatibility information may distinguish models within the same product family. Dyson’s notes state that older Supersonic attachments may physically fit the Supersonic Nural, but they do not support the Nural’s Attachment learning feature; the wide-tooth comb is an exception. This means “fits” and “supports every feature” are not always the same statement.
Before ordering a replacement or add-on attachment, use this sequence:
- Record the complete model name and, if shown, the model number from the dryer or its manual.
- Read the attachment maker’s compatibility list for that exact model, not just the family name.
- Check whether the attachment supports the dryer’s automatic or intelligent features, if any.
- Confirm what is included in the box and what is sold separately.
- Keep the product page or manual showing compatibility in case the delivered part differs from the listing.
Weight: compare the number and the way it was measured
Weight affects how the dryer feels during a long blowout, but listings do not always count the same components. One manufacturer may quote the hand-held unit alone; another may include the cable and plug. Compare like with like.

For example, the US specification page for the Dyson Supersonic Nural lists a weight of 1.8 pounds. An earlier US Supersonic specification sheet lists a net weight of 1 pound 13 ounces and explicitly says that the figure includes the cable and plug. Those numbers are official specifications for named models and editions, not a general market average. They cannot be used to predict which dryer every person will find most comfortable.
Also consider balance and controls. Two dryers with similar scale weights can feel different if one is longer, has controls where your thumb rests, or places more mass near the rear. Product pages do not always publish a center-of-gravity measurement, so if you can handle a model in a store, check whether you can operate the switches without changing your grip.
Use the complete specification, not one headline number
| Buying axis | What to compare | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Heat control | Number and range of heat settings; separate cool setting or cool-shot control | More selectable steps can make adjustment easier, but the count does not reveal exact temperature or consistency. |
| Airflow control | Speed settings and any published airflow specification | Compare official airflow figures and speed controls; wattage is not an airflow measurement. |
| Wattage | Rated watts and the market’s voltage | Use it as a power clue. Farjo’s 1,800-watt home-use recommendation is an attributed opinion, not a universal rule. |
| Attachment fit | Diffuser, concentrator, comb, or other tools included or available | Match the tool to the job and verify fit and feature support for the exact model. |
| Weight | Manufacturer-stated weight and what the measurement includes | Check whether the cable and plug are counted before comparing two listings. |
| Electrical compatibility | Voltage, plug and intended market | A 120-volt specification, for example, must be checked against the electrical system where you plan to use it. |
Two official specifications show why model names matter
The following figures illustrate how to read a specification sheet; they are not a ranking or head-to-head performance test.

- Creative 4-layer airflow filter: A 4-layer filter is used to ensure that hair is not sucked inside the blow dryer. It is safer and can be used with confidence.
- Ceramic Coating: Helps reduce heat damage from over-styling with even heat distribution for a frizz-free results.
- Tourmaline Technology: Maintain neutral charge on hair's surface, leaving it looking conditioned and smooth while helping reduce frizz and static for healthy, shiny hair. And Blowing air up to 120°.
- All Hair Types: 1600 Watts(125V) for maximum drying power[1800W/240V]. This is 110V edition. 2 heat/ 2 speed settings for precise styling. And cold shot button releases cold air to lock in style.
- A variety of accessories come standard:The concentrator and volumizing finger diffuser attachments give you maximum precision for truly customized hairstyles.
| Specification | Supersonic Nural US page | Earlier Supersonic US specification sheet |
|---|---|---|
| Power | 1,600 W | 1,600 W |
| Airflow information | 13.3 L/s | Not stated in the cited sheet |
| Heat settings | 4 | 4 |
| Speed or airflow settings | 3 speeds | 3 airflow settings |
| Weight | 1.8 lb | 1 lb 13 oz net, including cable and plug |
| Voltage | 120 V | US specification; verify the sheet for the applicable market |
The different wording for airflow controls and the different weight presentation are precisely why you should identify the model, market and measurement basis before comparing products.
A practical buying process
Step 1: Define the job
Write down whether you mainly rough-dry, smooth with a brush, define curls, work with coils, or need a gentler stream. This determines whether a diffuser, concentrator, wide-tooth comb or gentle-air tool deserves priority.
Step 2: Set the minimum controls
Choose the minimum number of heat and speed settings you can use comfortably. If you switch between drying and finishing, independent controls and a cool option are more useful than a single high/low switch.
Step 3: Check power and voltage
Record the rated wattage and voltage from the manufacturer’s page. Use wattage as one indicator of available power, not as a substitute for airflow and control specifications.
Step 4: Audit the box contents
List every included attachment and mark which tools are optional. For curly or wavy styling, confirm that a compatible diffuser is available before you buy the dryer itself.

Step 6: Record the trade-offs
A simple comparison note prevents a flashy specification from deciding the purchase for you. Record heat settings, speed settings, airflow figure if published, wattage, voltage, weight basis, included tools and the price of any required attachment. If a value is not stated, leave it as “not stated” rather than guessing.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating wattage as a speed score
Wattage describes electrical power, while speed depends on the dryer’s design and airflow system. Compare the published speed controls and airflow specification as separate fields.
Mistake: buying a diffuser after checking only the brand
Attachment systems can differ between models, and a physically fitting older attachment may not support a newer dryer’s features. Verify the complete model and the feature compatibility statement.
Mistake: comparing weights that count different things
A bare-unit weight and a cable-inclusive weight are not equivalent. Read the measurement note before deciding that one model is lighter.
Mistake: ignoring the electrical market
A US 120-volt model may not be the correct choice for another country. Confirm voltage and plug requirements for the location where you will operate the dryer.
Mistake: assuming marketing technology proves an outcome
Ionic, ceramic and tourmaline descriptions may indicate design features associated with negative ions or static control, but the available sources do not establish a guaranteed result or a broad comparative advantage. Base the purchase on verifiable controls, fit and specifications.
