What to look for in a GPU cloud provider: a buying guide

The right GPU cloud provider is the one that can repeatedly deliver your required GPU configuration, in the required zone, at a predictable total cost, with software and networking that fit your workload. Do not choose from an accelerator name or hourly GPU rate alone. Compare the complete instance—GPU memory and count, CPU, host memory, storage, network, interconnect, region, capacity terms, image, drivers and support—then validate it with a small run of your own workload.

This guide gives you a practical way to do that without treating one provider as a universal winner. Published specifications describe different configurations, and the figures below are not a cross-provider performance benchmark.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Start with the workload, not the provider catalog

Write down the workload you are buying capacity for before opening a pricing page. A model-training job, an inference endpoint, a video-rendering queue and an interactive notebook can need very different machines even when all use GPUs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Define the minimum GPU requirement

  • Accelerator architecture: Identify the framework and kernels you need to support, then list compatible GPU generations. Compatibility can matter more than a theoretical peak figure.
  • GPU memory: Record the minimum memory per GPU for your model, batch size, sequence length, checkpoint and inference concurrency. Aggregate memory across several GPUs is not automatically usable as one large memory pool.
  • GPU count: State whether one GPU is sufficient, whether you need several GPUs in one instance, or whether you need a cluster of instances.
  • Utilization pattern: Note whether jobs run continuously, in bursts, overnight, interactively or only when a queue has work. This determines how much you value reservations, commitments or interruptible capacity.
  • Reliability target: Decide whether a job can restart, resume from a checkpoint or tolerate a short outage. That choice affects whether Spot capacity is acceptable.

Turn the workload into measurable tests

Before committing, define a short acceptance test: load the real model or application, run representative data, measure time per step or requests per second, record GPU memory use, and observe storage and network behavior. Include startup time and image preparation. A machine that looks attractive on a specification page can be a poor fit if data staging, driver compatibility or inter-GPU communication becomes the bottleneck.

Compare the complete instance configuration

Use a single worksheet for every candidate. The accelerator is only one line item.

Dimension What to record Why it changes the decision
GPU Exact model, memory per GPU, count, supported features and virtualization limits Determines model fit, batch size, precision options and concurrency
Interconnect Within-instance topology, link type and whether GPUs share a high-speed fabric Strongly affects all-reduce, tensor parallelism and model-parallel workloads
CPU and host memory vCPU count, CPU generation, RAM, NUMA layout where documented Controls data loading, preprocessing, orchestration and CPU-bound stages
Storage Boot disk, local or instance-store capacity, persistent disk options, throughput and IOPS Determines dataset staging, checkpoint speed and restart time
Network Maximum bandwidth, packet characteristics, topology and egress treatment Matters for distributed training, remote datasets and serving traffic
Location Region, zone, data-residency requirement and actual capacity A configuration may exist on paper but be unavailable where you need it
Commercial terms On-demand rate, reservation or commitment terms, Spot behavior and ancillary charges The lowest GPU rate may not produce the lowest configured cost or usable capacity
Software Image, driver, CUDA or equivalent toolkit, framework versions and update process Reduces setup time and prevents incompatibility during deployment
Operations Quotas, support, monitoring, security controls and contractual terms Determines whether the service can be operated safely at your scale

GPU model, memory and count

Memory is a hard constraint

Estimate memory for weights, activations, optimizer states, temporary buffers and framework overhead. Leave headroom for the actual production batch or request mix. If a model barely fits during a test, a longer sequence, larger image or concurrent request can cause an out-of-memory failure.

Check both per-GPU memory and aggregate memory. Eight GPUs with 640 GB total memory, for example, do not behave like a single 640 GB accelerator unless your software can distribute the model and communicate efficiently. Google Cloud documentation lists an eight-GPU A3 Mega configuration with 640 GB of aggregate GPU memory and an eight-GPU A3 Ultra configuration with 1,128 GB aggregate GPU memory. Those are instance configuration figures, not application-performance results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer performance from the model name

Two instances with similar GPU labels can differ in CPU balance, memory bandwidth, host networking, storage and interconnect. Compare the exact machine series and configuration. Ask whether the listed GPU count is attached to one host, spread across hosts, or offered through a virtualized profile with resource limits.

Plan for growth

If you expect a larger model or higher concurrency, record the next configuration you would move to and the migration path. A provider with a suitable single-GPU option but no practical step-up in the same region may create more operational work than a slightly more expensive starting point.

CPU, system memory and storage are part of GPU performance

CPU and RAM

Data decoding, tokenization, augmentation, feature extraction and request handling can starve an otherwise powerful GPU. Compare vCPU count and host memory alongside the accelerator. Check whether the machine gives you enough RAM for the dataset cache and whether CPU resources are shared or dedicated under the selected offering.

Local versus persistent storage

Local NVMe or instance-store disks can provide high throughput and low latency, but their data may disappear when an instance is stopped, deleted or recreated. Persistent disks are easier to retain and attach elsewhere, yet their throughput and cost depend on the selected type and size. Keep durable source data and checkpoints on storage designed for persistence, and use local disks for reproducible caches or temporary shards.

Measure checkpoint time, not just advertised disk capacity. A training job that spends several minutes writing a checkpoint can lose more money during recovery than it saves on a cheaper GPU.

Networking and interconnect for multi-GPU work

Distributed workloads amplify communication costs. For data parallelism, workers exchange gradients; for tensor or pipeline parallelism, they exchange activations and partial results. The relevant questions are whether GPUs in one host share a fast interconnect, how many hosts you can place in the same topology, and what network bandwidth is available between them.

Read topology details, not only bandwidth

A published maximum network number is not a guaranteed application throughput. Check whether it is a host limit, a per-interface limit or an aggregate figure, and whether the machine uses a switching fabric that keeps GPU-to-GPU traffic inside the host.

AWS documents P4d instances with NVIDIA A100 GPUs, NVSwitch communication among GPUs in the same instance and 400 Gbps networking. It also documents 8 TB of NVMe-based SSD storage per P4d instance. These figures apply to P4d specifically; compare them with an equivalent configuration and validate them with your own distributed job rather than treating them as a provider-wide ranking.

Questions for a cluster design

  • Can the required number of instances be placed in one zone at the same time?
  • Is the interconnect available on every size, or only on a particular machine series?
  • What happens if one worker is reclaimed or fails?
  • Can your framework restart from a checkpoint without duplicating expensive preprocessing?
  • Are cross-zone data-transfer charges or latency relevant to your architecture?

Calculate total configured cost

Use the provider calculator for the complete machine, not a GPU-only comparison. A useful monthly estimate is:

Total = compute + GPU or accelerator charges + boot and persistent disks + local-storage charges where applicable + network transfer + image or licensing charges + snapshots and backups + support and other platform charges.

Google Cloud’s pricing guidance distinguishes GPU and machine-type pricing and calls out disks, images, network and VM instance pricing as separate considerations. Rates vary by region and consumption model. Enter the exact machine type and GPU count into the calculator, then add storage and expected traffic rather than assuming they are included.

Use three utilization scenarios

Scenario Assumption to model Decision it informs
Steady use Near-continuous operation over the billing period Whether a commitment or reservation lowers predictable cost
Burst use Short jobs with idle periods between them Whether on-demand startup time and storage persistence matter more than a lower rate
Interruptible use Checkpointed jobs that can restart after reclamation Whether Spot savings outweigh engineering and recovery time

Convert an hourly quote into the cost of useful work. Include idle time while data is copied, time spent writing checkpoints and any failed or repeated runs. For a multi-GPU job, compare the cost of completing one training run, not merely the price of one GPU-hour.

On-demand, reservations, commitments and Spot capacity

On-demand

On-demand capacity is the simplest baseline: you pay the published rate for the resources you provision, subject to the provider’s terms. Use it for initial benchmarking and workloads whose timing or reliability makes interruption unacceptable. It does not guarantee that a scarce GPU will be available when you later try to start it.

Reservations and commitments

Ask two separate questions: does the commercial arrangement reduce price, and does it secure capacity? Google Cloud documents reservations for GPUs even without a commitment; where no commitment applies, on-demand prices and applicable sustained-use discounts can apply. Reservation requirements differ by machine family, and selected A4 and A3 Ultra configurations require reservations or specified alternative provisioning methods.

Before signing anything, confirm the exact GPU model, machine type, zone, quantity, start date, term, cancellation rules and whether unused reserved capacity continues to incur charges. A reservation in the wrong zone does not solve a capacity problem.

Spot or other interruptible capacity

Spot pricing is useful only when your software expects reclamation. Google Cloud states that Spot prices are dynamic and may change as often as every 30 days, with discounts of 60–91% off corresponding on-demand prices for most machine types and GPUs. The same documentation warns that a Spot VM may be stopped or deleted with 30 seconds’ notice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Spot for fault-tolerant queues, distributed jobs with frequent checkpoints, experimentation and other work that can resume. Keep durable checkpoints outside the reclaimed instance, automate restart, and make sure the job can detect a termination event. Do not base a deadline-sensitive production service on an assumed discount or uninterrupted access.

Capacity, quotas and zone verification

A static product page cannot establish current capacity in your account. GPU availability can be limited to specific zones within a region. Check all of the following before designing around a machine:

  1. Choose the required region and zone based on data location, latency and regulatory needs.
  2. Verify that the GPU model and machine series are offered in that zone.
  3. Check your project or account quota for GPU count, vCPU, IP addresses and related resources.
  4. Confirm whether the configuration requires a reservation or a special provisioning method.
  5. Attempt a real provisioning request, or obtain a provider-confirmed capacity result for the required quantity.
  6. Document a fallback zone, machine series or workload size and test that fallback before an incident.

Do not treat a successful single-GPU launch as proof that eight GPUs, or several identical hosts, will be available later. Capacity can differ by zone, time and requested quantity.

Software images, drivers and framework support

Software setup is part of provider fit. Confirm the operating system, NVIDIA or other accelerator driver, CUDA or equivalent toolkit, container runtime, kernel modules and framework versions. Check how updates are applied and whether your security process permits the provider’s image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AWS describes a preconfigured Deep Learning AMI as the easiest way to get started with its latest GPU-accelerated instance types. Treat that as a starting point, not an automatic production standard: verify that the image’s drivers and framework versions match your code, container base images and deployment pipeline. Record the image identifier and package versions so a rebuilt instance is reproducible.

Image checklist

  • Can the image see every attached GPU with the expected device order?
  • Do the driver and toolkit versions support your framework and custom kernels?
  • Can you use containers instead of modifying the host manually?
  • Are monitoring agents, vulnerability scans and logging compatible with the image?
  • What is the patch and rollback process when a driver update breaks a workload?

Region, security and operational requirements

Location affects latency, data residency, egress cost and capacity. Select the region only after identifying where source data, users and dependent services reside. Confirm whether backups, snapshots and support personnel can involve another geography under your organization’s policy.

Evaluate identity and access controls, private networking, encryption, key management, audit logs, vulnerability response and tenant-isolation documentation. The available specifications do not settle every provider’s contractual or compliance term, so obtain the current agreement and security documentation for your account.

Support is an engineering dependency. Ask how GPU-capacity incidents are escalated, what telemetry is available, whether you can obtain host and job-level metrics, and which service-level commitments apply to the exact instance type. A low rate is not economical if an outage leaves a team without a recovery path.

A practical provider-selection process

  1. Write a workload brief. Include model or application, minimum GPU memory, GPU count, expected utilization, checkpoint interval, data volume, latency target and required region.
  2. Build a shortlist by configuration. Record exact machine types rather than generic GPU names. Eliminate candidates that miss memory, CPU, storage or topology requirements.
  3. Price the configured machine. Use the provider calculator for compute, accelerator, disks, network and other applicable charges in the intended region.
  4. Check capacity and quota. Verify the zone, quota, reservation requirement and provisioning method for the required quantity.
  5. Reproduce the software environment. Test the image, drivers, toolkit, framework, containers and monitoring components.
  6. Run an acceptance benchmark. Use representative data and measure useful work, startup, checkpoint and recovery time.
  7. Model failure. Stop a worker, revoke a lease or simulate an interruption. Confirm that checkpoints, queues and alerts behave as designed.
  8. Choose a primary and fallback. Document a second zone, machine series or provider only after testing the fallback’s software and data path.
  9. Review the contract and operating plan. Confirm billing terms, reservation obligations, support, security controls, data location and an exit procedure.

How to read the published Google Cloud and AWS examples

The following table places documented examples side by side without implying that they are equivalent or that one is faster for your application.

Published example Documented detail How to use it in a buying decision
Google Cloud A3 Mega Eight GPUs and 640 GB aggregate GPU memory Check whether your model-parallel software can use the topology and whether the zone has capacity
Google Cloud A3 Ultra Eight GPUs and 1,128 GB aggregate GPU memory Confirm reservation or provisioning requirements, per-GPU memory behavior and software support
AWS P4d NVIDIA A100 GPUs, NVSwitch within the instance, 400 Gbps networking and 8 TB NVMe SSD storage Compare an equivalent multi-GPU configuration, then test communication, storage and recovery with your workload
Google Cloud Spot 60–91% discount versus corresponding on-demand rates for most machine types and GPUs; prices can change up to once every 30 days; reclamation can occur with 30 seconds’ notice Use only with checkpointing, restart automation and tolerance for changing economics

These numbers describe specific offerings and documentation pages accessed in 2026. They are not a controlled benchmark, a promise of current availability or a substitute for a live quote.

Common buying mistakes and fixes

Comparing GPU-hour prices only

Symptom: The invoice is higher than expected or the job completes slowly. Fix: Add VM, storage, network, image, support and idle costs, then compare cost per completed job.

Assuming listed capacity is guaranteed

Symptom: A launch fails with insufficient capacity after the design is approved. Fix: Verify zone capacity, quota and reservation requirements for the exact quantity, and maintain a tested fallback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring interconnect

Symptom: Multi-GPU scaling is poor despite high utilization on individual GPUs. Fix: Inspect topology and measure all-reduce or activation-transfer time on the intended machine.

Putting durable data on ephemeral disks

Symptom: A stop, deletion or host failure removes a dataset cache or checkpoint. Fix: Keep source data and checkpoints on persistent storage and recreate local caches automatically.

Treating Spot as cheap on-demand

Symptom: Training repeatedly restarts or a service misses its deadline. Fix: Use Spot only for interruptible work, shorten checkpoint intervals and budget for restart overhead.

Accepting a prebuilt image without version control

Symptom: A rebuild changes driver behavior or breaks a custom kernel. Fix: Pin image and package versions, test updates in a staging project and keep a rollback image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final decision checklist

  • Does the exact GPU model provide enough memory per GPU with headroom?
  • Is the GPU count and interconnect suitable for your parallelism strategy?
  • Are CPU, RAM and storage sufficient to keep the GPUs fed?
  • Can the required quantity be provisioned in the required zone now?
  • Have quota, reservation and fallback-capacity requirements been confirmed?
  • Have you priced the entire configured instance and the cost of useful completed work?
  • Can the image, drivers, toolkit, framework and containers be reproduced?
  • Are checkpoints, logs, backups and durable data protected from instance loss?
  • Does the network topology meet distributed-training or serving needs?
  • Do security, data-location, support and contractual terms meet your organization’s requirements?
  • Has the configuration passed a representative workload and recovery test?

If any answer is unknown, the provider decision is not finished. Resolve that unknown with a live capacity check, a documented quote or a workload test rather than relying on a catalog headline.
