1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCompare sustained heat and performance under the same workload, not just the processor name or a short benchmark. The useful evidence is how hot the exterior becomes over time, how much speed the phone retains as it warms, and which protections activate: dimming, charging pauses, app limits, warnings or shutdown. A lower measured temperature can result from a cooler chip, a different chassis design or more aggressive throttling, so temperature by itself is not a complete score.
Why foldable-phone heat matters before a shutdown
A foldable can become less usable well before it turns itself off. Samsung’s support guidance says a hot Galaxy foldable may reduce brightness and performance, stop charging, close running apps and restrict other functions. If the temperature keeps rising, the phone may shut down. Warning text and the exact protections vary by model.

That means a phone that never reaches an emergency shutdown can still be a poor choice for long gaming sessions, repeated video recording or charging in a hot place. Look for the point at which the device starts limiting itself, not merely the highest score it posts when cold.

The five heat questions to answer before buying
- How hot does the outside get during a sustained, repeatable test? Compare the same workload, test duration, ambient temperature and measurement location. A surface reading is not the same as the internal battery or processor temperature.
- How much performance remains? Stable frame rates or benchmark results matter more than a peak score if you play for an hour or render several videos.
- What does the thermal-control system do? Record dimming, charging pauses, closed apps, connectivity changes, warnings and shutdowns.
- Does the evidence match your workload? Gaming and repeated camera use are relevant to heavy users. Navigation in a sunlit car and charging in a hot room are separate scenarios that need separate evidence.
- Is the comparison fair? Compare compact flip models with other flips and book-style devices with other book-style devices. Their size, hinge and internal layout make cross-category conclusions weak.
What independent tests currently show
Existing comparisons illustrate why there is no universal “coolest foldable” answer. The results below come from different tests and should not be combined into one ranking.
#1 Best Overall
- Unfold extraordinary with Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold; with Pixel’s largest screen and Gemini, Google’s most advanced AI, it’s made for multitasking and entertainment[1]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Get a head start on syncing your data before it even arrives: After you purchase your new Pixel, look for an email that explains how to transfer your photos, videos, passwords, and more in just a few quick steps[14]
- The gearless, high-strength hinge makes it durable enough to handle about 10 years of folding[3]; plus, Pixel 10 Pro Fold is built with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance[4]
- The brighter-than-ever 8-inch Super Actua Flex display is Pixel’s largest screen yet[12]; and you can use Split Screen to plan a trip, drag and drop images, and open multiple apps at once[5]
| Device and source | Workload and reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Motorola Razr Fold — Android Authority, 2026 | 37.9°C peak and 33.5°C average in the Wild Life Extreme test, compared with 39.2°C peak and 37.2°C average for Galaxy Z Fold7. | A cooler result in that graphics test; it does not establish performance in charging, sunlight, camera recording or every game. |
| Motorola Razr Fold — separate Android Authority comparison, 2026 | Reached 35°C while several other tested foldables were near 40°C. | A second test with its own method; do not merge these readings with the first comparison. |
| Galaxy Z Fold7 — Ars Technica, 2025 | During extended gaming, performance slowed by about 40% under thermal stress; CPU performance fell about 10–15%. | Shows why sustained frame rate and throttling are more informative than a short peak benchmark. |

How to judge sustained performance
Peak speed is only the starting point
A short benchmark runs while the processor, battery and graphics system are relatively cool. A long game, video export or camera session keeps several components busy and allows heat to accumulate. Check a test that repeats the workload long enough to expose throttling, then look at the score or frame-rate curve rather than only the first result.
Throttling can hide behind a lower temperature
One phone may hold a higher surface temperature while delivering steadier frame rates; another may feel cooler because it reduces processor and graphics power early. The cooler phone is not automatically the faster or more comfortable choice. A useful review reports temperature and retained performance together.
Check where the heat is measured
Reviewers may measure the back panel, inner screen, hinge area or a hotspot near the processor. These locations are not interchangeable. Ask whether the phone was open or closed, whether it was in a case and whether the reading was a peak or an average. Treat all figures as test-specific rather than as a direct prediction of battery temperature.

- Universal unlocked: Compatible with all major U.S. carriers, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and other prepaid carriers.
Thermal controls that affect everyday use
Manufacturers protect the battery, display and processor by changing phone behavior as temperature rises. A review should identify each intervention and the approximate point at which it appears.
- Brightness reduction: the screen may dim, particularly during outdoor use, making navigation or video harder to see.
- Performance limits: frame rates, app launch speed or export times can fall without a complete shutdown.
- Charging pauses: the phone may stop accepting power until it cools.
- App and feature restrictions: demanding apps can close; camera, flash, wireless radios or other functions may be limited.
- Warnings and shutdown: a warning gives you time to stop; continued heating can trigger an automatic power-off.
Because these controls differ by model, read the owner’s manual and support page for the exact device rather than assuming that two phones with similar chips behave alike.
Workload-by-workload checks
Gaming
Ask for a long, repeatable game test with frame-rate data and temperatures over time. Synthetic graphics tests such as Wild Life Extreme are useful for comparing identical runs, but they do not represent every game engine or network condition. The Galaxy Z Fold7 result reported by Ars Technica—about a 40% gaming-performance decline and a 10–15% CPU decline under extended stress—demonstrates the kind of sustained-loss figure worth seeking, not a prediction for every foldable.

Camera and video recording
Repeated high-resolution recording can heat the processor, image sensor and storage simultaneously. Look for tests that record continuously, switch lenses and use stabilization, then note whether recording stops, the preview dims or the phone displays a temperature warning. A gaming-only result cannot answer this question.

Charging
Fast charging adds heat while the phone may already be warm from use. Check whether a review records charging speed after gaming, whether charging pauses at a high temperature and how quickly it resumes. Do not infer charging behavior from a graphics benchmark.
Navigation, sunlight and a parked car
GPS, a bright display, mobile data and direct sunlight create a different thermal situation from indoor gaming. A phone in a closed summer car can exceed its normal operating range before a benchmark would. Look for model-specific operating limits and real-world reports that match your climate and use.
Operating limits are model-specific
Google’s current Pixel Fold safety guide says not to use or charge that phone at ambient temperatures below 0°C (32°F) or above 35°C (95°F). Those limits apply to Pixel Fold; they are not a universal rule for every foldable. When the phone exceeds its normal operating temperature, Google recommends moving it to a cooler or warmer location and waiting before using it again.
Samsung likewise advises Galaxy foldable owners to avoid extended direct sun and very hot locations such as a car in summer. If overheating makes you uncomfortable, its support page says: “If you begin to feel uncomfortable due to the device overheating, stop using the device.” Follow the manual for your exact model because warning messages and protections can differ.

How to compare two foldables fairly
- Match the form factor. Start with flip-to-flip or book-style-to-book-style comparisons.
- Record the test context. Note model and regional configuration, software version, battery state, open/closed orientation, case use, ambient temperature, workload and test duration.
- Use the same workload. Prefer an identical game, benchmark or recording format when comparing phones.
- Capture both temperature and output. Record peak and average surface readings, frame rates or scores at the beginning and end, and any throttling.
- List every intervention. Include dimming, charging pauses, app closures, warnings, radio changes and shutdowns.
- Separate claims from measurements. A manufacturer’s explanation of a cooling feature is not independent proof that the phone runs cooler.
- Prefer repeated evidence. One run is a useful data point; several matched runs or independent reviews provide more confidence.
How to read manufacturer cooling claims
Design changes can be meaningful, but they need attribution. In a 30 July 2026 engineering interview, Samsung said the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra use a dual-path charging architecture intended to distribute power more efficiently across the battery system and improve heat management. That is the manufacturer’s explanation of the design, not independent evidence of a lower measured temperature. Look for third-party tests performed under matched conditions before treating the claim as a buying advantage.
The same interview cites more than 100 reliability-validation tests covering drops, repeated folding, pressure, moisture and debris. That count is not a count of thermal tests and should not be used as proof of heat performance.
Practical steps when a foldable gets hot
- Stop the demanding task. Exit the game, camera recording or other heavy app and unplug the charger if charging.
- Move to a suitable environment. Get out of direct sun and away from a hot car or other heat source. For Pixel Fold, remain within Google’s stated 0°C–35°C ambient range.
- Let the phone cool naturally. Wait until the warning clears and the exterior feels normal before resuming use. Do not rely on an unapproved cooling accessory or a generic temperature app as a safety system.
- Inspect the charger and cable. Samsung warns against damaged chargers or cables; replace suspect equipment with an approved one.
- Check for recurrence. If ordinary use repeatedly triggers warnings, charging pauses or shutdowns, record the conditions and contact the manufacturer or authorized service provider.
- Stop if it feels unsafe. Discontinue use if the device is uncomfortably hot, swollen, damaged or producing an unusual smell.
There is no cited evidence here that an aftermarket fan, generic “thermal” app, case modification or other third-party workaround is safe or effective for foldables. Use only solutions supported for your model.

What you can conclude—and what you cannot
The available results show that foldables can differ meaningfully in surface temperature and sustained performance, even when their headline specifications look similar. They do not establish a single coolest model for all buyers. The cited independent tests use selected synthetic graphics workloads, and methods vary between articles. There is no matched comparison here covering every current model under ordinary navigation, fast charging, direct sun, video capture and long gaming sessions.
Before purchase, verify the current stock model, regional variant, software version and local support documentation. Choose the phone with the best evidence for your own workload, and weigh retained performance and thermal controls alongside the temperature number.
