To choose a living-room set for everyday use, check its frame and joints, seat support, cushion fill, upholstery rating and care instructions, then confirm that each piece fits both your room and the delivery route. No fabric name, quality label, or abrasion score on its own guarantees a long service life.
Start with the construction, not the marketing label
Ask the seller for the specific frame materials and how the joints are assembled. Design Within Reach (DWR) identifies kiln-dried hardwood, corner-blocked joints, solid wood or steel, and steel-reinforced plywood as sturdiness indicators. A broad claim such as “hardwood frame” does not tell you what every structural component is made of or how it is joined.

Also ask about the suspension beneath the seat and the material inside the cushions. These affect both support and the way a sofa feels over time.
Seat suspension
DWR describes spring suspension as tending to have more give, while unidirectional webbing tends to feel firmer and isolate movement better. Neither is automatically right for every household: try the seat if possible and choose according to the feel and support you prefer.

Cushion fill
Higher-density foam is generally firmer and more durable than lower-density foam, according to DWR. Feather and alternative fills can feel softer, but they do not hold their shape as well as foam. Ask what maintenance the cushions need and whether their covers or inserts can be replaced.
Compare fabric ratings carefully
Abrasion ratings are useful for comparing upholstery, but first check the test method and the exact fabric option on the piece you are considering. DWR gives reference points for frequent use of at least 15,000 Wyzenbeek double rubs or 25,000 Martindale rubs. Those figures come from different methods; do not treat them as interchangeable or as a forecast of how many years a sofa will last. DWR is offering retailer guidance, not an independent comparative test.

Article reports that typical household fabrics generally score around 20,000 Martindale rubs and that most of its upholstery is tested beyond 35,000 rubs. Those are Article’s own product-information claims, not figures that apply to every maker or fabric. Article also says its vendors use a standardized load test of 300 pounds per seat for 10 minutes, and that products are not tested to failure. This is a company-specific description, not an industry-wide requirement.

Match upholstery to your household and care habits
Compare cleaning instructions, stain response, snagging, pilling, fading, and feel—not just the material name. There is no universally best upholstery for every home; the practical choice depends on who uses the furniture and how much care you are willing to give it.

- Children and frequent guests: Read the maker’s cleaning instructions and warranty before deciding whether the material’s appearance and upkeep are a workable match for regular use.
- Sunlight: Include fading risk in the comparison if the set will sit in a bright area.
- Wool: John Lewis describes wool as hard-wearing, but notes that it can be stain-prone and dry-clean-only. Check the care directions for the specific fabric rather than assuming all wool upholstery is maintained the same way.
If you are considering leather
Leather finishes are not interchangeable. DWR describes aniline leather as less protected and harder to clean, while semi-aniline leather has a protective finish. That added protection may suit busy everyday use better; natural variation and aging may instead be part of the appeal for buyers who prefer aniline.
Check care and warranty terms before purchase
Follow the instructions for the selected upholstery, and ask whether a stain treatment or other product affects coverage. For example, Article says that applying an additional stain-resistant product voids its warranty. That restriction is specific to Article; do not assume another maker has the same term.

Make sure the set fits the room and delivery route
Measure the intended furniture footprint as well as the route from the entrance to the room: doorways, halls, stairs, and elevators can all prevent delivery of a piece that otherwise fits the floor plan. DWR suggests outlining a sofa’s footprint with tape. Its spacing suggestions are planning advice, not universal requirements. Nebraska Furniture Mart also recommends measuring the room and access points.
- Record the available floor space and the dimensions of each piece.
- Measure narrow points along the delivery route, including turns where a piece may need to angle through.
- Check that the planned arrangement leaves circulation space that works for your household.
- Confirm seat dimensions and seating count suit the people who will use the set.
A practical checklist to use with the seller
- Ask what the frame, reinforcements, and joints are made of and how they are assembled.
- Ask whether the seat uses springs or webbing, what the cushions contain, and what maintenance they require.
- For the exact upholstery option, check the abrasion method and score; compare scores only within the same method.
- Read cleaning directions, stain-treatment restrictions, and warranty terms before choosing a fabric or leather finish.
- Consider pets, children, guests, sunlight, and your willingness to maintain the material.
- Measure the room, circulation space, doorways, halls, stairs, and elevator before ordering.
- Ask whether cushion covers, inserts, or other components can be serviced or replaced, if the maker provides that information.
Why upholstery quality matters to the whole set
The European Commission Joint Research Centre’s 2015 furniture Green Public Procurement technical report notes: “Poor quality covering materials are more likely to suffer from wear and tear and even minor damage will grow into more serious damage with continued normal use if the covering material is not repaired.” This is a statement in a consultation-era technical report, not a current consumer-law requirement. It underlines why the covering deserves scrutiny alongside the frame and support.
