Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe right cloud infrastructure monitoring platform gives your team dependable visibility into the metrics, logs, and traces produced by its actual estate, then turns that data into dashboards, alerts, and an investigation path. Evaluate coverage, signal correlation, instrumentation portability, workflow fit, and usage-based cost against your own cloud mix and workloads. No single product is best for every environment.
Start with the questions the platform must answer
Monitoring is useful only when it helps an operator answer a concrete question quickly: Is a service healthy? Which component is slowing a request? Did a deployment cause an error spike? Is a managed database, virtual machine, container, or external dependency responsible for the symptom?

AWS describes monitoring as the systematic collection and analysis of metrics, logs, and traces to track the health and efficiency of cloud resources and support reactive incident management. That definition is a practical buying test. A platform should collect the signals your workloads produce, put them in a context your team can understand, and help people move from detection to diagnosis.
Before comparing product names, write down the services, applications, teams, and incident scenarios you need to observe. A platform that looks impressive in a demonstration may still leave a critical managed service, third-party component, or application path without useful data.

Verify coverage of all three telemetry signals
Metrics, logs, and traces describe different aspects of the same system. Treating one as a substitute for the others creates blind spots.
Metrics for trends and thresholds
Metrics are numeric measurements recorded over time. Examples include CPU utilization, request rate, latency, error count, memory use, queue depth, and database connections. They are efficient for charts, capacity trends, service-level indicators, and threshold-based alerts.
Ask which metrics are available automatically for each cloud service and which require an agent, exporter, or custom instrumentation. Confirm the available resolution, dimensions, aggregation choices, and retention for the workloads that matter. A platform may collect a headline metric while omitting the dimension needed to separate regions, instances, tenants, or response codes.
Logs for event detail
Logs are timestamped records of activity. They can explain why a request failed, show an authentication decision, reveal a configuration change, or provide application-specific context that a numerical metric cannot express.
Check how the platform receives logs from native cloud services, virtual machines, containers, managed workloads, and third-party systems. Verify parsing, search, field extraction, filtering, export, and retention behavior. Determine whether high-volume sources can be sampled or routed selectively without losing the records required for incident investigation or compliance.
Traces for request paths
Traces follow a request as it crosses services and components. They can show where time is spent, which downstream call failed, and how a user-facing operation depends on several internal services.
Ask whether the platform accepts distributed traces from your languages and frameworks, preserves trace and span context across service boundaries, and lets an investigator open related logs and metrics from a trace. Trace support should be tested with a real multi-service transaction rather than a single demo endpoint.

Correlation is more valuable than isolated signal support
Collecting all three signals is only the starting point. During an incident, the operator should be able to move from an alert on a latency metric to the affected service, related logs, and representative traces without manually copying identifiers between unrelated tools.
Use a pilot to test that path. Create a known error or latency condition in a non-production environment, trigger the alert, open the dashboard, locate the affected entity, and follow links or filters to the relevant logs and traces. Record how many steps, queries, and context switches are required.
Map collection coverage to your real cloud estate
Google Cloud documentation presents several collection dimensions: native cloud services, agents, third-party integrations, custom instrumentation, and logs. Use the same inventory method for every candidate platform.
Native cloud services
List every managed service that needs visibility, including compute, storage, databases, networking, queues, and serverless workloads. For each one, ask:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- What telemetry is available without installing software?
- Which service-specific metrics, logs, and traces are exposed?
- Are important fields or dimensions missing from the default integration?
- Can alerts identify the resource, region, account, project, or other ownership boundary?
Virtual machines and operating systems
Determine whether hosts require an agent and what the agent collects. Check supported operating systems, installation methods, upgrade behavior, resource overhead, network requirements, and operation in private or restricted subnets. If your fleet uses immutable images or autoscaling, test whether new instances register automatically and whether retired instances disappear cleanly.
Containers and managed workloads
Test discovery of clusters, nodes, workloads, namespaces, tasks, and short-lived jobs. Verify that labels and ownership metadata survive restarts and rescheduling. A dashboard that shows a cluster total but cannot identify the failing workload is unlikely to support fast diagnosis.
Third-party dependencies
Include payment systems, identity providers, content delivery services, databases outside your main cloud, and other hosted dependencies. Confirm whether integrations are maintained by the platform, require a separate connector, or depend on custom API polling. Ask how authentication credentials are stored and rotated.

Application instrumentation and custom data
Inventory the languages, frameworks, queues, and business events your applications use. Check whether you can send custom metrics, structured logs, and traces with the fields your developers need. A platform should make it clear which features are available through standard integrations and which require product-specific code.

Prefer portable instrumentation where practical
Google Cloud recommends using an open, vendor-neutral framework such as OpenTelemetry instead of vendor- and product-specific APIs or client libraries. Portability can reduce the effort required to change back ends, run more than one analysis system, or keep application instrumentation consistent across clouds.
Do not treat a statement of framework support as proof that every feature is interchangeable. Verify the signals, languages, exporters, semantic conventions, sampling controls, and context propagation you actually need. Ask whether the platform accepts standard OpenTelemetry data directly, modifies it, or requires a proprietary agent for advanced features.
Review ownership of instrumentation as well. Developers may maintain application libraries while an operations team manages host collection. Agree on naming, resource attributes, service identity, and environment labels before a large rollout. Consistent attributes are what make cross-service filtering and aggregation useful.
Make dashboards support decisions, not decoration
Dashboards should answer the questions your operators ask during normal service review and incidents. Google Cloud documents charts, dashboards, and alerting policies for metrics; equivalent capabilities should be examined in every shortlist.
Dashboard checks
- Can a team create dashboards without writing a query for every panel?
- Can panels share variables such as environment, region, service, or account?
- Can users move from a summary chart to a resource-level view?
- Are logs and traces accessible from the same investigation context?
- Can dashboards be versioned, copied, reviewed, and assigned to a team?
Build one dashboard during evaluation: an executive health view, a service overview, and a dependency view. Use the same data and questions in each candidate. Note the time required, the permissions needed, and whether the result remains understandable when a service has many instances.
Alerting checks
Alerts should identify a meaningful condition, its scope, and the action expected from the recipient. Test threshold alerts, absence-of-data conditions, and multi-signal conditions where available. Check evaluation frequency, notification delays, grouping, deduplication, maintenance windows, escalation, and delivery channels.

Ask whether an alert includes a link to the exact dashboard, query, resource, or trace that supports diagnosis. Also test recovery notifications and alert history. An alert that fires reliably but provides no context can increase workload rather than reduce it.
Evaluate the investigation workflow end to end
Monitoring software is used under pressure, so count the work between an initial symptom and a defensible hypothesis. A useful workflow usually includes:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Detect a condition through a chart, alert, or operator query.
- Identify the affected service, resource, environment, and time window.
- Compare related metrics to determine whether the issue is isolated or systemic.
- Open logs filtered to the same resource and period.
- Follow trace or correlation identifiers to locate the slow or failing component.
- Capture a query, chart, or incident link that another responder can reproduce.
Run this sequence with a realistic failure, such as elevated errors in one service caused by a dependency. Measure search speed, context preservation, permissions friction, and the number of separate interfaces involved. Favor evidence from the workflow over a feature checklist.
Choose native cloud services, third-party coverage, or a combination
Native and third-party monitoring solve different evaluation problems. AWS documents multiple AWS monitoring services and also lists integrated observability partners. That does not make one category universally better; it means the estate should determine the starting point.
When native services may fit
- Your estate is concentrated in one cloud.
- Most workloads use that cloud’s managed services.
- Your team already operates the cloud’s identity, billing, and administration model.
- You need service-specific telemetry with minimal integration work.
When broader third-party coverage may fit
- You operate across multiple cloud providers.
- You need one investigation experience across cloud, on-premises, and hosted dependencies.
- Existing operational tools require integrations that a native service does not provide.
- Teams need a common view while retaining different cloud accounts or providers.
These are selection prompts, not guarantees. For either approach, verify coverage against every workload in your inventory and test the handoff from alert to diagnosis.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Model cost from telemetry volume and retention
Do not compare monitoring products using a headline subscription figure alone. Google Cloud states that its observability products are priced by data volume. Other services may also meter ingestion, indexed data, query use, retention, hosts, users, or features. Billing units and rates can change, so use each shortlisted service’s current pricing page when you build an estimate.
Recommended Free Tools
Build a usage model
- Estimate metric series and collection frequency for each environment.
- Estimate daily log volume by source, including bursts during incidents.
- Estimate trace volume, span size, sampling rate, and peak traffic.
- Specify hot, searchable, and archival retention periods.
- Include test, staging, and disaster-recovery environments.
- List optional features such as extended retention, advanced analytics, or premium support separately.
Request a bill-of-materials explanation for every charge. Ask what happens when volume exceeds the estimate, whether overages are immediate or reconciled later, and how dropped, sampled, or excluded data is counted. Keep a sensitivity case for an incident month, when logs and traces may increase sharply.
Best Value
Use a weighted shortlist rather than a feature-count contest
Score each candidate against the workloads and incidents that matter. Weight coverage and investigation speed more heavily than cosmetic differences.
| Evaluation axis | Questions to answer | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Environment coverage | Are required cloud services, VMs, containers, managed workloads, and third-party components supported? | Working integrations and a list of agent or custom-instrumentation requirements |
| Signal coverage and correlation | Can metrics, logs, and traces be collected and investigated together? | A completed incident walkthrough using all relevant signals |
| Instrumentation portability | Does the platform accept OpenTelemetry or another approach that limits product-specific code? | Instrumented test service, exporter configuration, and feature exceptions |
| Dashboards and alerts | Can teams create useful views and notifications around meaningful conditions? | Service dashboard, alert policy, notification, and recovery test |
| Cost behavior | Which telemetry and usage dimensions are billed, and how do retention and volume affect totals? | Usage-based estimate with normal and incident-volume scenarios |
| Operational fit | Does the workflow fit existing identity, incident, ticketing, and ownership practices? | Permission review and a responder exercise |
Run a controlled proof of value
A short, representative pilot is more informative than a broad product tour. Select one customer-facing service, one dependency, one host or container workload, and one managed cloud service. Instrument them with the collection approach you intend to use in production.
- Define two normal-health questions and two incident questions.
- Collect metrics, logs, and traces for the selected path.
- Create dashboards that expose ownership, environment, and dependency context.
- Configure alerts for a known latency or error condition.
- Trigger the condition in a safe environment and follow the investigation workflow.
- Export or retain the queries, dashboards, and configuration needed to reproduce the test.
- Record missing data, manual steps, permission problems, notification delays, and estimated usage.
Invite both operators and application developers. Operators can judge alert and incident flow; developers can judge instrumentation, trace detail, and log context. Require every claimed capability to be demonstrated with your data.

Common evaluation mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by the longest feature list
A long list does not prove that your specific service, region, runtime, or data field is supported. Use the estate inventory and a working pilot as the acceptance test.
Ignoring data quality
Missing labels, inconsistent service names, and broken trace context make correlation unreliable. Define naming and ownership attributes before onboarding many teams.
Testing only a quiet environment
Dashboards and alerts that look fine with low volume may behave differently during a burst. Include peak and incident-volume assumptions in both functional and cost tests.
Locking applications to proprietary APIs too early
Where portability matters, start with OpenTelemetry or another neutral approach and document the capabilities that still require a product-specific component.
Separating price from architecture
Ingestion, retention, sampling, and query choices are architectural decisions. Model them together instead of asking for a single per-user or per-host number.
A practical decision rule
Select the platform that covers every critical workload, collects the required metrics, logs, and traces, preserves enough context to investigate incidents, supports your chosen instrumentation approach, and produces a cost estimate you can explain. Start with native cloud monitoring when your estate is concentrated and its integrations meet the workflow. Test a third-party platform when multi-cloud, third-party dependencies, or cross-tool investigation are central requirements. In both cases, make the decision from a realistic pilot and usage model rather than a generic feature comparison.
