Before buying, check five things in this order: whether the genre and core loop match the way you like to play; whether representative footage or a demo confirms the real experience; whether reviews repeatedly identify issues you care about; whether the price fits the amount and type of play you expect; and whether the platform and multiplayer setup work for you and your friends.
No single factor wins for every player. The right purchase is the game that fits your preferences, hardware, budget and available play time—not necessarily the newest or most familiar name.

Why a franchise label is not enough
A new franchise has no established history to rely on, so its name, logo or marketing campaign cannot tell you whether the moment-to-moment play will be enjoyable. Even within an established publisher’s portfolio, a first entry can change genre, pacing, camera style, progression or audience.

Player preferences vary sharply. Microsoft Advertising’s March 26, 2024 study surveyed 10,202 players and identified six audience segments with different motivations, platforms, gameplay habits and genre preferences. That finding does not rank the segments or predict what you will enjoy; it explains why a popular concept can still be a poor personal fit.

Use the franchise identity only to form a hypothesis. Then test the actual game against the criteria below.
1. Match the genre and core loop to how you play
Start with the repeated activity you will perform for most of the game, not the setting or cinematic pitch. A science-fiction world may hide a slow tactical game; a colorful adventure may depend on punishing combat or lengthy resource management.
Identify the loop
- Genre: Is it an action game, role-playing game, strategy title, simulation, puzzle game, survival game or a hybrid?
- Core actions: Will you aim, plan turns, build, explore, negotiate, solve puzzles, manage inventories or repeat short competitive matches?
- Pace: Does the game move constantly, alternate between preparation and action, or spend long periods on dialogue and traversal?
- Difficulty and consequence: Does failure cost time, resources, progress or only a brief restart? Are there adjustable modes or accessibility options?
- Session shape: Can you enjoy a 20-minute session, or does the design assume long uninterrupted play?
Translate the pitch into your motivation
Ask what you want from your next game: mastery, relaxation, discovery, competition, story, creative expression or social time. A franchise built around one motivation may frustrate a player seeking another, even when both players like the same broad genre.

2. Inspect real gameplay before trusting the marketing
Trailers and gameplay videos are among the purchase drivers identified in the 2024 Venatus/IAB UK multi-market report, alongside reviews, genre, price and recommendations. They are most useful when you use them to verify the loop rather than admire a short montage.
What to watch for
- Uncut sequences: Look for footage that shows a complete encounter, mission or match. Edited trailers can omit downtime, menus, repetition and loading.
- Input and camera feel: Check aiming, movement, timing windows, camera distance and interface density. These details determine comfort more than a cinematic trailer does.
- Progression: See how upgrades, skill trees, equipment or levels change play. Determine whether the game offers meaningful choices or mostly incremental numbers.
- Presentation: Watch for text size, subtitle options, visual clutter, audio mix and the readability of enemies or objectives.
- Consistency: Compare several videos from different stages or modes. One polished demonstration may not represent the full campaign or endgame.
Use a demo or trial when one exists
A demo gives stronger evidence than a promise because you can test controls, performance and your own reaction. Play long enough to reach the ordinary loop, not only the opening tutorial. Note whether you want to continue after the novelty fades, whether the difficulty feels fair and whether the game runs acceptably on your hardware.
3. Read reviews for recurring details, not just scores
Reviews are valuable evidence, but there is no universal rule about which kind matters most. YouGov’s June 17, 2024 survey across 17 international markets found that 24% of respondents relied more on consumer reviews, 6% relied more on critic reviews, 25% relied on both equally and 24% relied on neither when buying video games. These are separate response categories; they do not show that reviews alone caused a purchase, and local preferences differ.

The Venatus/IAB UK report says, “Game reviews and the genre of the game itself play a vital role in purchasing decisions.” Treat that as the report’s conclusion, not as a guarantee that a high score predicts your enjoyment.

Build an evidence trail
- Read a few detailed reviews from outlets that explain their methods and play time.
- Look for issues repeated across independent reviews, such as repetitive missions, unstable performance, intrusive monetization, limited accessibility or a weak story.
- Separate launch-state problems from durable design choices. A patch may address crashes, but it cannot turn a slow combat system into a fast one.
- Check whether praise and criticism concern features you personally value. A reviewer may dislike a long story while you specifically want one.
- Use user reviews to spot practical patterns—connection problems, save errors, confusing menus or hardware-specific issues—while allowing for extreme outliers.
Do not average scores mechanically. A 90-point review that praises competitive depth may be less relevant to a player seeking a solo narrative adventure than a lower-scoring review that explains the campaign in detail.
4. Test whether the price matches your expected use
Price matters together with what you expect to do in the game. The Venatus/IAB UK report identifies price, discounts, value for money and extended play hours as purchase considerations. That does not establish a universal “hours per dollar” threshold: a short, memorable campaign can be better value for one person than a hundred repetitive hours for another.
Calculate your own value
- Write down the modes you are likely to play: campaign, co-op, competitive multiplayer, creation tools or post-launch activities.
- Estimate realistic weekly play time, not the maximum advertised by the publisher.
- Check what the standard edition includes and whether essential features are locked behind a higher edition, season pass or separate purchase.
- Compare the current price with your expected use and your other entertainment options.
- Consider whether you would still want the game if friends stopped playing or post-launch updates ended.
Discounts can change the decision, but a lower price does not fix a poor fit. Conversely, a premium price may be reasonable for a game you will play repeatedly with a regular group. The Entertainment Software Association reported $59.3 billion in total U.S. consumer spending on video games in 2024; that industry total provides market context, not evidence that any individual game is worth its asking price.
5. Verify platform, edition and technical access
Platform availability and online multiplayer features appear among the purchase drivers in the Venatus/IAB UK report. Confirm the exact platform and edition before paying, because a franchise may launch on some systems first, offer different features by generation or require a specific account or subscription for online play.

Make an access check
- Confirm that your console, PC operating system or handheld is supported by the exact edition you plan to buy.
- Check storage requirements, download size, controller or input support and whether an internet connection is required for installation or play.
- Look for version-specific differences in graphics modes, frame-rate targets, cross-play, save transfer and downloadable content.
- Verify language, subtitle, color, audio and control options if any are important to you.
- Check whether your friends use the same platform or whether cross-platform play is actually supported in the modes you want.
Do not assume that a franchise’s previous entry had the same technical requirements. Confirm the current game’s specifications and online policies from its store listing or official support documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Decide whether the social design fits your group
“Multiplayer” can mean very different experiences: two-player co-op, a small persistent group, a large competitive match, asynchronous interaction or an always-online campaign. Identify the actual structure before treating a social feature as a benefit.
The ESA’s 2025 U.S. facts report says 55% of players aged 8–90 play with others weekly. That population statistic is U.S.-specific and does not mean every buyer wants multiplayer. If you prefer solo play, confirm that the campaign is complete and enjoyable without a group. If you are buying for friends, ask:

7. Compare two candidates with a personal scorecard
When you are choosing between actual games, write down evidence instead of relying on whichever trailer made the strongest impression. The categories below are comparison prompts, not a scientifically measured weighting system; the studies available do not establish that one factor always matters most.
| Category | Questions to answer | Evidence to record |
|---|---|---|
| Play fit | Do genre, loop, pace and difficulty suit me? | Demo impressions; representative footage; repeated review details |
| Evidence quality | Have I seen ordinary play and more than one perspective? | Hands-on access, uncut videos and themes shared by independent reviews |
| Cost and use | What will I actually play, and what is included now? | Current price, edition contents, discount and realistic play pattern |
| Access | Will it run on my hardware with the features I need? | Platform, version, performance, storage and accessibility information |
| Social fit | Does solo or multiplayer design match my group? | Player count, cross-play, session structure and friend availability |
| Personal relevance | Does this entry offer the mechanics or setting that attracted me? | Specific features, not the franchise label alone |
Mark each category as “clear fit,” “uncertain” or “poor fit,” then investigate the uncertainties. A single poor fit in a non-negotiable category—such as an unsupported platform or an inaccessible control scheme—can outweigh several attractive features.
8. Check first-entry and franchise-specific risks
A new franchise may explain its world from scratch, but it may also assume familiarity with a genre convention or launch with fewer modes than a mature series. Look for a clear explanation of the premise, tutorial quality and whether the advertised features are available at launch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a franchise continuation or spin-off, determine what has changed rather than assuming the previous game is a reliable guide. A new entry can retain characters and themes while replacing the combat, progression or multiplayer model that earlier fans liked. Read previews and reviews for direct descriptions of those changes.
Be cautious when all available material is highly edited, embargoed or focused on story reveals. If you cannot verify the ordinary loop, platform performance or social structure, classify the purchase as uncertain rather than filling the gap with brand familiarity.
9. Use a final pre-purchase checklist
- I can describe the game’s repeated actions, pace and difficulty in my own words.
- I watched representative play or completed a demo, where available.
- I found recurring review comments that matter to my priorities and separated design choices from fixable launch bugs.
- I know the exact platform, edition, included modes and technical requirements.
- I checked whether the game works for solo play or for the specific friends and schedule I have.
- The current price feels appropriate for the amount and kind of play I realistically expect.
- I have identified at least one non-negotiable deal-breaker and confirmed the game does not violate it.
If several answers remain unknown, waiting for more hands-on coverage or a price change is a rational decision. If the answers are clear and the game fits your play style, access needs, social plans and budget, you have stronger grounds to buy—even if the franchise is new and has no established reputation.
