Plan for Tirumala around three non-negotiables: wear the traditional clothing TTD specifies, arrive for your ticket’s allotted time, and follow the temple’s conduct rules. Men should bring a dhoti or pyjamas with an upper cloth; women should choose a saree or half-saree with blouse, or a churidar with pyjama and upper cloth. SSD token and ₹300 Special Entry Darshan (SED) holders must join the queue only at the time printed or assigned on the ticket. The guidance below separates rules that TTD states for particular categories from advice that applies across the Tirumala visit.
Check the current instructions before you travel
Tirumala’s ticket categories, entry controls and security restrictions can change. Read the conditions attached to your own darshan booking and check the latest notices on the TTD dress-code page and TTD Do’s and Don’ts page. TTD also advises booking travel and accommodation well in advance. Do not rely on people offering instant rooms or darshan outside official channels; TTD specifically warns pilgrims against touts.

Carry the booking details you were issued and plan to be at the relevant entry point with enough time for travel, walking and screening. The exact route and reporting instructions belong to your ticket, so do not assume that a rule for one darshan type applies to another.
Tirumala dress code
TTD says traditional clothing was introduced in 2013 to support the spiritual atmosphere. Its published wording identifies the preferred attire below. Treat these as the safest choices when packing, and check the conditions for your particular ticket because the retrieved TTD page does not provide a current enforcement matrix for every category.

| Pilgrim | TTD’s stated preferred clothing | Practical packing advice |
|---|---|---|
| Men | Dhoti or pyjamas with an upper cloth | Pack a comfortable cotton dhoti or a pyjama set and a separate upper cloth. A kurta-pyjama combination can be practical if it includes the required upper cloth. |
| Women | Saree or half-saree with blouse, or churidar with pyjama and upper cloth | Choose a secure, comfortable outfit that allows walking and waiting while retaining the specified upper cloth. |
| Categories named on TTD’s dress-code page | Arjitha Sevas, VIP pilgrims seeking break darshan, and general pilgrims taking ₹300 and ₹50 darshan | Confirm the current clothing condition attached to your booking rather than extrapolating this list to every queue. |
For men, the key detail is not simply wearing a long shirt: TTD’s formulation is “dhoti or pyjamas with upper cloth.” For women, the listed options are a saree or half-saree with blouse, or churidar with pyjama and upper cloth. Pack a spare garment if your journey is long or weather is wet, but keep the replacement within the same traditional format.
Dress cleanly and bathe before entering the shrine, as TTD’s conduct guidance requests. Footwear is not to be worn in and around temple premises, so use footwear that can be removed easily and follow the locations designated by temple staff. Do not wear flowers at the Tirumala temple; TTD explains that flowers from the Seven Hills are meant for the Lord.
Entry timing: SSD tokens and ₹300 SED tickets
A TTD notice dated March 10, 2026 makes a specific rule for devotees holding SSD tokens and ₹300 Special Entry Darshan tickets: they may enter queue lines only at their allotted time. The notice states, “Devotees who arrive earlier or later than their allotted time slot will not be allowed into the queue lines.” Read the time printed or assigned on your ticket and organize transport around it.

| Ticket or token named by TTD | Queue-entry requirement | What the notice does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| SSD token | Join the queue at the allotted time; early or late arrivals are not admitted to the lines. | It is not a universal instruction for every darshan category. |
| ₹300 Special Entry Darshan ticket | Join the queue at the allotted time; early or late arrivals are not admitted to the lines. | It does not publish a rule for other ticket types. |
For the exact wording and date, see TTD’s March 10, 2026 notice. If your booking is for another seva or darshan, follow that ticket’s reporting instructions instead of applying the SSD/SED rule automatically.
A reliable timing plan
- Write down the exact allotted time and the ticket category before leaving your accommodation.
- Allow margin for road conditions, transfers, walking, clothing changes and security checks.
- Do not deliberately arrive hours early on the assumption that you can enter the line sooner; TTD’s notice expressly rejects early entry for SSD and ₹300 SED holders.
- If a delay becomes unavoidable, consult the official counter or notice applicable to your ticket rather than paying an intermediary who promises access.
Conduct inside Tirumala and the temple
TTD’s Do’s and Don’ts guidance combines devotional practice with practical crowd management. Follow temple procedures, wait for your turn and avoid actions that slow or disturb other pilgrims.
Before entering
- Bathe and wear clean clothes.
- Remove footwear where temple rules require it.
- Leave prohibited substances and objects outside the temple area.
- Keep offerings ready for the Hundi rather than handing money to an intermediary.
While waiting and during darshan
- Wait in your assigned queue and do not rush or push.
- Keep silence and concentrate on the deity inside the temple.
- TTD suggests chanting “Om Namo Sri Venkatesaya” inside.
- Respect local customs, temple staff and fellow pilgrims.
- Do not discard prasadam or teertham.
Actions TTD says to avoid
- Do not smoke, consume liquor or intoxicants, or eat non-vegetarian food while in Tirumala.
- Do not wear flowers in the Tirumala temple.
- Do not wear head guards such as helmets, caps, turbans or hats inside temple premises.
- Do not prostrate inside the temple, spit, create a nuisance, encourage beggars, or engage in violence or harshness.
These instructions are not suggestions to negotiate at the gate. A respectful, quiet approach also helps families and older pilgrims move through crowded spaces without conflict.

Restricted items, weapons and recording devices
Security rules are especially important because TTD has issued separate notices over time. A July 19, 2019 TTD release gives examples of banned items, while the current Do’s and Don’ts page adds a procedure for licensed weapons and ammunition. The older list is illustrative, not a guarantee that it is exhaustive or unchanged.
| Item or category | TTD guidance | How to plan |
|---|---|---|
| Cigarettes, tobacco, liquor, pan and meat | Listed as banned examples in TTD’s July 19, 2019 appeal. | Do not pack them for the Tirumala visit. |
| Playing cards | Listed as a banned example in the 2019 appeal. | Leave them at home. |
| Firearms and explosive material | Revolvers and other explosive material appear in the 2019 examples. | Do not carry them into the temple area. |
| Licensed weapons and ammunition | TTD’s Do’s and Don’ts page says these are prohibited; anyone possessing them should declare them at the Alipiri checkpoint and submit relevant documents. | Do not conceal them. Follow the checkpoint declaration procedure and current staff instructions. |
| Pets and “miming birds” | Included in the 2019 banned-item examples. | Make alternative arrangements before travelling uphill. |
| Drones, smart glasses and other recording devices | A TTD release dated September 1, 2026 says these are strictly prohibited in the sacred temple area for security and privacy. | Do not bring them into that area. The release does not list every device or describe storage arrangements, so check current instructions before departure. |
Read the complete 2019 TTD banned-items appeal together with the current conduct page, and review the September 1, 2026 device-security release. Because screening arrangements can change, never assume that an item will be stored for you or returned at a convenient point.
Offerings, money and interactions with others
TTD instructs pilgrims to deposit offerings only in the Hundi. Do not give cash to someone who claims it will secure faster darshan, accommodation or a special favor. The same caution applies to rooms and tickets: TTD recommends advance booking and warns against touts for both accommodation and darshan.

Respect other pilgrims’ prayer, disability access and personal space. Keep children close in queues, avoid loud conversations and do not photograph or record where devices are prohibited. If someone is struggling, seek help from temple personnel rather than blocking the line or arguing with other visitors.

If a rule conflicts with your plans
Do not try to solve a timing or clothing problem by paying a stranger. For an SSD or ₹300 SED booking, arriving outside the allotted slot can mean you are not admitted to the queue, so ask the official personnel responsible for that ticket category what options remain. If security staff identify a prohibited device or item, follow their instructions; do not argue that an older list did not mention it. When in doubt, defer to the latest TTD notice attached to your booking and the instructions given at the checkpoint.
