Visit a big-cat park as you would any facility holding powerful, sensitive wild animals: choose a venue with credible welfare practices, read its current rules, and treat every barrier and staff instruction as mandatory. Do not touch, feed, call to, or attempt to attract the cats. Keep children under continuous adult supervision and verify practical details such as opening times, tour capacity, food rules, photography, accessibility and arrival procedures before travelling.

Rules differ between zoos, wildlife parks and sanctuaries, and they can change. The guidance below combines general visitor principles with clearly labelled examples from named facilities; check the selected park’s own website and signs on the day.

Choose a facility that puts animal welfare first

A “sanctuary” label alone does not prove that a facility is responsible. WWF’s 2024 guide, How to Ensure Your Visit to a Big Cat Sanctuary Does No Harm, warns that some attractions use cub photographs and public contact to generate profit without providing meaningful sanctuary or conservation value. Use the venue’s published policies to test what the label means in practice.

Screen for no-contact policies

WWF’s first screening question is whether visitors can have physical contact with big cats of any age. A responsible facility should not offer petting, handling, cub-cuddling or similar encounters. The Big Cat Sanctuary states, “No direct contact with any animal is permitted.” Public contact can put people and animals at risk and may encourage breeding or acquisition of animals for experiences.

Check breeding, buying and trading policies

WWF says a true sanctuary does not breed the animals in its care. The Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance describes true sanctuaries as refuges providing lifelong care for abused, neglected or unwanted big cats, without breeding, buying, selling or trading animals. The Alliance identifies its own membership and accreditation by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) as signs of high animal-care and safety standards. Treat those as useful indicators from the Alliance, not as a universal guarantee; read the facility’s own policies and history as well.

Look at enclosure quality and stated purpose

WWF advises looking for enclosures that provide adequate space and security. Compare how a park explains its animal-care, conservation and education work, not just the size of its viewing area or the number of photo opportunities. A venue should explain why each animal is there and how it will receive lifelong care. Public contact, routine cub displays or a breeding program are warning signs when a facility presents itself as a sanctuary.

Question to ask What a strong answer looks like Why it matters
Can visitors touch a big cat? No public contact, including with cubs Protects visitors and animals and avoids rewarding exploitative encounters
Does the facility breed? A sanctuary states that it does not breed animals in its care Sanctuaries should provide refuge, not produce animals for display
Are animals bought, sold or traded? A clear no-buying, no-selling and no-trading policy Reduces incentives to move animals through the captive-wildlife market
How are enclosures described? Published information addresses space, security, enrichment and lifelong care Shows that welfare extends beyond what visitors can see
Is there independent recognition? For example, Alliance membership or GFAS accreditation, understood as an indicator rather than a guarantee Provides an additional point for comparison

No source establishes one universal ranking system for big-cat parks worldwide. Compare candidates on these axes instead of assuming that a single certificate, country or marketing term settles the question.

Confirm the practical details before you travel

Opening hours, tour schedules, group sizes, food policies and accessibility arrangements are venue-specific. Check the chosen park’s current visitor page immediately before departure and save the details offline if mobile coverage may be limited.

Verify hours, reservations and arrival

  • Confirm the date-specific opening time and whether advance booking is required.
  • Check the start time, duration and meeting point for any guided tour.
  • Ask how late arrivals are handled; a tour may leave without waiting.
  • Confirm parking, public-transport directions, check-in time and identification requirements.
  • Find out whether you may leave and re-enter or must remain with a group.

As an illustration only, The Big Cat Sanctuary’s reviewed group-tour FAQ listed 90-minute tours beginning at 1:30 p.m., groups of up to 10 guests, and site access from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those figures describe that venue’s published information at the time reviewed in 2026, not a general schedule. Reconfirm them before relying on them.

Ask about food, drink and smoking

Rules can protect animals as well as keep the site clean. LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary’s visitor regulations prohibit bringing food or beverages onto its property. Another park may permit packed meals in a designated area, so do not infer a universal policy. Check smoking restrictions, picnic locations and whether water bottles are allowed on tours.

Check photography and commercial use

Personal photography may be allowed while commercial photography requires prior permission. LIONSROCK, for example, permits personal photos but requires permission for commercial photography. Confirm whether flash, tripods, drones, live-streaming or photography during feeding demonstrations are restricted. Never use a camera or phone as a reason to lean over a barrier or approach an enclosure.

Plan for mobility, weather and facilities

Ask about step-free routes, seating, accessible toilets, service-animal rules and the surfaces used on tours. The Big Cat Sanctuary warns that ground away from its main path can be uneven; comfortable, closed walking shoes are a sensible response to that specific warning, not a universal dress code. Check weather exposure, shade, toilets and the availability of drinking water before setting out.

Follow barriers and staff directions without exception

Read the rules before leaving home and again at the entrance. Stay on permitted paths, remain with the guide or group when required, and keep behind every fence, gate and stand-off line. The Big Cat Sanctuary prohibits climbing fences or gates and entering unauthorised areas. Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute likewise prohibits disturbing exhibit animals and crossing barriers. A barrier is a safety control, not a viewing suggestion.

Keep distance and noise under control

Do not call to a cat, whistle, bang on a viewing panel or make noises to provoke a response. LIONSROCK explains that its big cats are sensitive to noise and asks visitors to keep voices low and noise to a minimum so the animals can remain calm and comfortable. Quiet observation also helps you hear a guide’s instructions and reduces disruption for other visitors.

Never feed or lure an animal

Do not offer food, toss objects, wave treats or use a toy to bring a cat closer. LIONSROCK instructs visitors not to feed free-roaming animals, approach fences, call out to cats or encourage them to come closer. These are that sanctuary’s rules, but they illustrate the safe default: only trained staff should control feeding, and only within a formally managed activity.

Do not enter restricted or animal areas

Even if a gate appears open or an animal is out of sight, do not cross a sign, chain, rail or staff-only boundary. If you drop a phone or other item inside an enclosure, tell staff; never retrieve it yourself. Follow evacuation, weather and regrouping instructions immediately.

Prepare children and set expectations

Children should stay within sight and under an adult’s direct supervision for the entire visit. The Big Cat Sanctuary and LIONSROCK both require adult supervision, and some Big Cat Sanctuary feeding experiences require children to remain outside the stand-off feeding area with a supervising adult. Check age limits and activity-specific rules when booking rather than assuming that a child admitted to the park may join every experience.

Explain the rules before arrival

  • Use “look, listen and stay behind the line” as the simple rule set.
  • Explain that loud calls, tapping and feeding can frighten or harm animals.
  • Give each child a clear adult to stay beside, especially during busy tours.
  • Plan breaks so tired children do not wander or become tempted to climb.

If a child cannot reliably follow the boundary and noise rules, choose a viewing-only visit or postpone the trip. A responsible adult should not be distracted by photography, food or another child while supervising.

Understand feeding demonstrations and other encounters

A feeding talk or keeper presentation is not permission for visitor contact. Remain in the designated viewing area, follow the timing and movement instructions, and do not imitate staff actions. Ask in advance whether children, mobility devices or cameras are allowed near the stand-off area. If an activity appears to involve touching, holding or crowding a big cat, decline it; WWF’s no-contact guidance applies regardless of the animal’s age.

Some parks allow a compact binocular for observing animals from the permitted path. It is optional equipment, not a reason to move closer, cross a barrier or ignore a guide. Ordinary quiet observation is usually more respectful than trying to force an active display for a photograph.

Use a simple day-of-visit checklist

  1. Re-read the venue’s current rules, opening time and booking confirmation.
  2. Pack weather-appropriate clothing, comfortable shoes and any required medication.
  3. Bring only items the venue permits; confirm food, drinks, bags and camera equipment.
  4. At arrival, note the emergency meeting point, toilets, accessible routes and staff contacts.
  5. Before each exhibit, read its sign and identify the barrier you must remain behind.
  6. Keep phones and cameras secure and maintain low voices.
  7. Leave immediately when staff direct the group to move, shelter or exit.

What to do if something feels unsafe

Stop and create distance if another visitor climbs, reaches through a barrier, shouts at an animal or tries to feed it. Do not confront the person at the enclosure. Tell a staff member, guide or ranger and describe the location. If you lose sight of a child or group member, alert staff immediately rather than searching restricted areas yourself.

Report damaged fencing, an unsecured gate, a fallen sign or an animal outside its expected area to staff from a safe position. Follow their instructions about evacuation or shelter; do not attempt to solve the situation independently or take photographs.

Know which standards apply to the park

Regulation depends on jurisdiction. The UK government’s Standards of modern zoo practice address animal welfare, public safety, conservation and education. On the page updated 20 January 2026, the 2012 standards remain in effect in England and Scotland through 23 May 2027; the 2027 standards for Great Britain take effect on 24 May 2027. This is UK-specific regulatory context, not a worldwide rule. For a park elsewhere, identify the responsible national or regional regulator and read the facility’s licence and welfare information where available.

Legal compliance is a baseline, not a substitute for your own screening. A park can meet local requirements while still offering an experience you consider inconsistent with sanctuary principles. Use the no-contact, no-breeding and no-trade questions, enclosure information and clarity of visitor rules together.

Make the visit educational rather than performative

Ask guides about each animal’s rescue history, permanent-care needs, natural behaviour and conservation context. Listen for explanations of why an animal cannot be released and how the facility funds care. Avoid judging welfare by whether a cat is visible, active or close to the viewing point; animals may be resting or using parts of an enclosure that visitors cannot see.

Respect a cat that turns away or remains hidden. The goal is not to obtain a reaction, selfie or close-up, but to observe without adding stress. Following the park’s rules, choosing a facility that rejects public contact and supporting genuine lifelong care are the most responsible ways to visit.
