For an Atlantic or Caribbean trip, hurricane season officially runs June 1 through November 30. Check current forecasts and local emergency guidance, and make sure you know how you would handle a change of plans.
When is hurricane season in the Caribbean?
The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30 and includes the Caribbean Sea. Tropical cyclones can occur outside those dates, so the calendar is a guide to the season, not a guarantee that travel is safe before or after it. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center identifies September 10 as the climatological peak; most Atlantic tropical cyclone activity occurs from mid-August to mid-October. These figures describe historical basin activity, not a forecast for a particular island or year. See the National Hurricane Center’s Atlantic climatology.

Can a seasonal outlook tell you whether your island will be hit?
No. A seasonal outlook estimates basin-wide activity; it is not a landfall forecast and does not predict storm activity at a particular location. There is no general seasonal statistic that can say whether a named island will be hit during your specific trip. As your dates approach, monitor official forecasts and destination-specific government alerts rather than treating the seasonal outlook as an island forecast. NOAA Climate Prediction Center’s 2026 Atlantic outlook explains the outlook’s scope, while the National Hurricane Center preparedness guidance points travelers toward current forecasts and alerts.

How should you weigh the travel decision?
There is no single risk level that applies to every tropical island or traveler. Consider the destination, dates, your ability to change plans, and the consequences a disruption would have for you.

The U.S. Department of State recommends considering travel insurance for emergency medical care and evacuation abroad, but it does not establish what any particular policy covers. Read the State Department’s 2024 travel guidance.
What should you arrange before leaving?
Before booking
- Check the destination government’s official travel and emergency-management information. Identify how it issues alerts and where it publishes evacuation or shelter guidance.
- Consider whether you could change dates or leave if severe weather disrupts your itinerary. Review airline, ferry, lodging, and insurance terms rather than assuming a storm-related change will be covered.
- Use a seasonal outlook only as basin-wide context. It cannot tell you whether your island will experience a storm on your dates.
Before departure
- Save trusted update sources. Bookmark the National Hurricane Center’s forecast and preparedness pages, and identify the destination’s official alert channels. Set up more than one way to receive updates where possible; the NHC recommends having multiple ways to receive forecasts and alerts.
- Ask your accommodation about its storm plan. Find out how it communicates alerts, where guests should shelter, and what it does if transport or utilities are disrupted. Procedures vary by property and destination.
- Keep essentials accessible. Keep identification, prescriptions, essential medical information, payment cards, some cash, your phone, and a charger where you can reach them. NOAA and CDC preparedness guidance includes planning for documents, medicine, cash, and communications. A compact battery-powered radio is an optional backup if useful local broadcasts are available; NOAA lists one among preparedness supplies. Review NOAA’s preparedness guidance.
- Agree on a contact plan. Decide how you and your travel companions will get in touch if you are separated or phone service is disrupted. Keep important contact details available offline as well as on your phone.
What should you do if a storm threatens during your trip?
Follow local alerts and instructions
Monitor current official forecasts and local authority notices. Do not rely on a seasonal outlook or social media alone. Learn the local alert meanings and follow authorities’ directions to evacuate or shelter. The CDC says a hurricane watch means hurricane conditions are possible and is issued 48 hours before expected tropical-storm-force winds; a hurricane warning means hurricane-force winds are expected and is issued 36 hours before expected tropical-storm-force winds. Those lead times are definitions in CDC guidance, not a guarantee of how much time you personally will have to act. Read the CDC’s hurricane safety guidance.
Do not wait for a personal forecast or debate an evacuation order
If local authorities direct you to evacuate, follow their instructions and use the route or transport they specify. If told to shelter, follow the designated shelter guidance. As the CDC puts it: “Always listen to authorities regarding whether you should evacuate or stay at home.”

Stay away from floodwater and storm damage
Do not walk or drive through floodwater or approach damaged areas. After the storm, wait for an official all-clear before going outside; hazards may remain even when the strongest winds have passed. Check local instructions for road access and returning to your accommodation.
What details still depend on the destination?
General hurricane advice cannot establish a specific island’s strike probability, local alert system, evacuation transport, emergency number, shelter arrangements, medical access, or airline and lodging policies. Verify those details with destination authorities and your travel providers. Insurance coverage also depends on the policy wording and circumstances, so confirm terms directly with the insurer rather than assuming a hurricane-related cost is covered.
