You do not need to buy Mists of Pandaria Classic separately. Access is included with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time. Blizzard launched the Classic version on July 21, 2025, so any guide written for launch week is now historical context rather than a complete description of the live game.
The practical decision is whether you are creating a new character, bringing back an existing level-85 character, or returning after later content updates. The sections below separate launch-era information from changes added afterward and show what to verify in the client before you commit to a leveling route.

Access, account requirements, and what “Classic” means now
Blizzard’s launch announcement made the access rule straightforward: an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time covers Mists of Pandaria Classic. There is no separate expansion purchase requirement in that announcement. Optional shop products or character services are not presented as prerequisites for entering Pandaria.

Treat a launch guide as a map of the starting package, not as a current phase calendar.

As of October 2026, Blizzard was still issuing maintenance notices for Mists of Pandaria Classic; an October 6 hotfix notice included the mode among the games receiving attention. That confirms ongoing support, but it does not publish a complete regional raid or phase schedule. Use the current client notices and in-game information for the unlock state on your realm.
Pre-patch changes that affect your first character
The pre-patch was more than a short countdown to the expansion. It changed the available classes, class design, and several everyday systems, so returning players from earlier Classic phases should expect a different opening experience.
Pandaren are a playable race
A new Pandaren begins on the Wandering Isle. During that opening story, you eventually choose whether the character joins the Alliance or the Horde. Pandaren are an option, not a requirement: every existing race can continue into the expansion, and you do not have to make a Pandaren to access Pandaria’s zones or activities.

Monks became playable with the pre-patch. Blizzard described three specializations:

- Windwalker: the damage specialization.
- Mistweaver: the healing specialization.
- Brewmaster: the tanking specialization.
That gives a new character a class with a role for each major group need. It also means that a returning player who remembers only the older Classic class roster should recheck class creation and role guides before choosing a main.
Updated talents, abilities, and spells
Classes received an updated talent system along with revised abilities and spells. Old talent builds copied from earlier Classic versions can therefore be misleading even when the character level is similar. Read the ability tooltips in the current client and spend the first talent points with the live specialization layout in front of you rather than relying on a pre-patch screenshot.
Quality-of-life and side systems
Area-of-effect looting arrived in the pre-patch, reducing the need to click every defeated enemy individually. Pet Battles also became available, adding a collection and turn-based activity that can be pursued independently of dungeon or raid progression. The Theramore’s Fall scenario was introduced as a world event during the transition, giving returning players an early example of the scenario format.

Choose a starting route: new character or returning character

The level-85 route is usually the cleanest way to see Pandaria’s intended leveling content if you already have a character ready. A brand-new character is better when you want to learn the revised class from its first abilities, experience the Wandering Isle, or rebuild professions and social connections from scratch.

How leveling is laid out
The Wandering Isle: levels 1–10
Blizzard’s launch overview placed the Pandaren introduction at levels 1–10. The faction decision happens as that opening sequence concludes. Because the choice is tied to the Pandaren story, decide which faction your friends or guild use before you finish the island if you intend to play together.
Pandaria’s launch-era zones: levels 85–90
The original level cap was 90, and Blizzard listed these zones as the main 85–90 journey:
- Jade Forest
- Valley of the Four Winds
- Krasarang Wilds
- Kun-Lai Summit
- Townlong Steppes
- Dread Wastes
- Vale of Eternal Blossoms
Those ranges describe the launch structure, not a promise that every player must complete every zone in a fixed order. Dungeon queues, scenarios, group quests, profession work, and later catch-up systems can change how quickly a character moves through the outdoor campaign. Use the zone list to understand the geography, then follow the quests and activities currently offered by your client.

Blizzard’s April 20, 2026 Joyous Journeys notice described a 50% experience bonus up to level 90. The notice said it was active by default, could be turned on or off through an innkeeper in a capital city or Dalaran, and would last until the next Mists of Pandaria Classic content update. Because that end point depends on a later update, do not assume the bonus is still running.

- Travel to an innkeeper in a capital city or Dalaran.
- Open the innkeeper’s dialogue and look for the Joyous Journeys toggle.
- Confirm whether the bonus is enabled before beginning a long leveling session.
- If the option is absent, check the latest in-game notice or Blizzard client announcement instead of relying on an old leveling guide.
The toggle is useful for choosing between a slower, quest-focused return and a faster route to group content. It does not change the level-90 cap described in the launch overview.
What was available at launch
Blizzard’s launch overview provided the following counts. They are launch-list figures, not the total amount of content available after subsequent updates.

That mix explains why the expansion is not only a raid ladder. You can level through outdoor quests, use shorter scenario runs, practice timed dungeons, pursue farming, or enter structured PvP. Your preferred activity should influence the character role and social group you build before reaching 90.
Content added after the launch package
Thunder King update — December 2025
Blizzard’s December 2025 announcement expanded the world with the Isle of Thunder and Isle of Giants. It also introduced Thunderforging, another chapter of the Legendary quest, the world bosses Oondasta and Nalak, new Scenarios, Challenge Mode changes, Celestial Dungeons updates, and the Throne of Thunder raid. A guide that stops at the original three-raid launch list will therefore omit major progression and collection goals.
Siege of Orgrimmar update
The Siege of Orgrimmar update notice added Timeless Isle, the Siege of Orgrimmar raid, five new world bosses, the final push for the Legendary Cloak, Proving Grounds, and PvP Season 14. Proving Grounds are particularly relevant to a returning player who wants to practice a role before joining a group, while Timeless Isle and the world bosses provide open-world alternatives to a fixed raid schedule.
Escalation update — March 31, 2026
Blizzard’s March 2026 weekly announcement said Escalation would arrive on March 31, 2026. It described new scenarios, Heroic Scenarios, a Northern Barrens conquest event, and additional features. Those additions are another reason to check current client notices before assuming that a launch-era activity list is exhaustive.
What the October 2026 notice does and does not prove
The October 6, 2026 hotfix notice confirms that Mists of Pandaria Classic was still receiving maintenance attention. It does not specify every regional phase, raid unlock, or future release date. If your group is planning around a particular raid or season, verify the current calendar and client announcements for your region rather than inferring availability from an old article.
Pick activities that match your available time

Pet Battles and Proving Grounds are useful when you want to play without assembling a full group. Scenarios sit between solo questing and traditional dungeons: they are designed for three players and can provide a focused objective in a shorter session. Raids, Challenge Mode, and organized PvP require more coordination and benefit from choosing a role before you reach the endgame.
A practical first-session checklist
- Open the current Classic client. Read the latest Blizzard notice shown for Mists of Pandaria Classic before following an older guide.
- Decide whether to create or reuse a character. A new Pandaren starts on the Wandering Isle; a returning level-85 character can begin the 85–90 journey.
- Check the live experience setting. Speak with an innkeeper in a capital city or Dalaran and verify whether Joyous Journeys is offered.
- Choose a primary role. If you plan to tank or heal, select Brewmaster or Mistweaver on a Monk, or configure another class around its current specialization rather than an older talent build.
- Set your activity goal. Decide whether your first milestone is level 90, a dungeon group, a scenario, a profession project, Pet Battles, or PvP.
- Verify phase-specific availability. Use the in-game calendar, activity finders, and current client notices to see which raids, seasons, and events are open in your region.
- Review optional services only if needed. Current boost pricing and availability are not established by the launch and update notices, so inspect the live shop and read the resulting character details before purchasing anything.
Common mistakes returning players make
- Assuming Pandaren are mandatory: they are one race choice, not an entry requirement for the expansion.
- Buying an expansion separately: the stated access requirement is an active subscription or Game Time.
- Treating launch counts as current totals: Thunder King, Siege of Orgrimmar, and Escalation added substantial content after launch.
- Using an obsolete talent build: the pre-patch changed talents, abilities, and spells.
- Assuming the experience bonus still runs: Joyous Journeys had a conditional end point tied to the next content update; check the innkeeper now.
- Planning around an undated phase rumor: the October 2026 hotfix confirms maintenance, not a complete regional unlock schedule.
- Choosing a boost without checking the result: availability and pricing vary by current shop state and region, and the cited notices do not establish them.
What to verify before committing to a long-term character
For a new character, the most important choice is the experience you want from levels 1–90: the Wandering Isle and Monk system, a familiar race route, or a fast return on an existing level-85 character. For an established character, the key question is not whether Pandaria exists but which later update and activity set your region currently exposes.
Check the Joyous Journeys toggle, read the latest client notice, and inspect the live dungeon, raid, scenario, and PvP listings. Those three checks prevent the most common mismatch between a launch guide and the game you are actually about to play.
