A mini PC and portable projector can replace a travel laptop for some work, but a 100-inch image alone does not make the setup equally portable or practical. The trade-off depends on image quality, room conditions, power, cables and how much setup your work can tolerate. The product specifications below show what portable projectors offer; they do not establish how a particular setup performs in a travel room.
What changes when a laptop becomes a mini PC setup?
A laptop combines the computer, screen, keyboard, pointing device and battery in one device. A mini PC separates those jobs: you bring the computer, a display, input devices, power supplies and any cables needed to connect them. That modularity can make sense if you want a larger image at your destination, but it also means more pieces to pack and assemble.

A projector can provide a much larger image than a portable monitor, but it needs adequate throw distance and a suitable surface. Ambient light, focus, keystone correction and the projector’s native resolution also affect whether that image is comfortable for work. A 100-inch maximum is a screen-size capability, not a guarantee of a bright, sharp image in every room.

These are manufacturer specifications, not results from a controlled comparison. Lumens and ANSI lumens are reproduced as stated by each manufacturer; do not treat differently labeled brightness figures as directly equivalent.

Specifications and availability can vary by region. Acer’s cited page is for the UK, while LG’s is for Canada; check the locally sold model and its ratings before relying on those details.
Resolution and brightness matter more than the diagonal alone
The M1 mini Plus illustrates why a projector’s largest advertised image does not tell the whole story: its listed 100-inch range comes with native 854×480 resolution and 50 ANSI lumens. At the other end, LG lists 4K UHD and 600 ANSI lumens for the CineBeam Q, while qualifying brightness by environment and mode. Optoma lists WXGA resolution and accepts a 1080p input; input support does not change its native 1280×800 resolution.

Distance and setup are part of the image
For the LG CineBeam Q, the listed distance for a 100-inch image is 2.66 m. Other cited pages give image-size ranges or maximums without a 100-inch throw distance in the information reviewed here. Confirm the required distance for the intended screen size before packing a projector; a room may not provide it.
Automatic focus and keystone features, such as those listed for the Optoma, can simplify alignment, but they do not remove the need for a suitable surface, power and a place to position the projector.

When a portable monitor may be the better travel display
A portable monitor is a more contained option for close-up work: it gives you a smaller, fixed surface that does not depend on projecting across a room. ViewSonic’s travel category lists portable monitors from 15.6 to 17.2 inches, alongside a portable projector advertised for images up to 100 inches. The monitor sacrifices scale; the projector needs the right room, distance and surface.
Choose by the work you need to do, not by the biggest possible diagonal. Reading text and working directly at a desk favor a dependable close viewing surface. A projector is more compelling when a large image is useful and the destination can accommodate it.

Check these details before leaving the laptop behind
- Workload: Confirm that the mini PC can run the applications and peripherals you rely on. The projector specifications do not establish whether a particular computer setup can handle your travel tasks.
- Complete packed kit: Account for the mini PC, display, keyboard, mouse, power supplies, cables and any mounts or adapters. Compare the weight and packed volume of the full kit with the laptop you would otherwise take.
- Power: Check what each component needs and whether you can power it at your destination. For example, Acer lists the B250i at 88 W standard and 71 W ECO, while the M1 mini Plus has a built-in battery and several listed charging options. Those details do not establish runtime for a complete mini PC setup.
- Connections: Verify that the mini PC and projector or monitor share the necessary video and audio connections. The Optoma page lists HDMI; ViewSonic lists HDMI and USB-C for the M1 mini Plus.
- Room and surface: Consider ambient light, projection distance and whether there is a usable wall or screen. A maximum image-size figure cannot ensure those conditions will be available.
- Setup tolerance: Include the time and effort to unpack, connect, position and focus the devices, then reverse the process when leaving. A separate computer and display do not inherently make travel simpler.
What the 100-inch claim does—and does not—tell you
Several cited portable projectors list image sizes reaching 100 inches or more. That establishes a manufacturer-stated size range, not a universal result or proof that the image will be suitable for extended work. Resolution, brightness, distance, room lighting and surface all shape the experience.

Likewise, the cited product pages do not provide a controlled comparison between a mini PC travel kit and a traditional laptop for weight, convenience, setup time or work performance. Whether the swap is worthwhile depends on the specific equipment and trip, not the screen-size claim alone.
