Preorder only after you can answer five questions: what exactly is included, when you will be charged, how cancellation works, when and how the game will arrive, and whether the bonuses justify paying before reviews and launch-day information. A preorder is an order placed before a product’s official release; it may reserve stock, but it does not automatically guarantee a release-day delivery, a permanent discount, or a refundable purchase.
The practical rules depend on the game, edition, platform, seller and country. The US storefront examples below illustrate why you must read the live listing and policy for your own transaction rather than treating one company’s terms as a universal rule.

Should I preorder a new JRPG?
Preordering can make sense when a physical edition is likely to be scarce, a clearly described bonus matters to you, or you need a specific edition at launch. Waiting is usually safer when the listing is vague, the premium edition contains items you do not want, launch performance is uncertain, or the seller’s cancellation and delivery terms are unfavorable.

Reasons to preorder
- You want a particular physical edition and the seller’s inventory may sell out.
- The bonus is useful to you and the listing explains exactly what it is, which editions qualify and when the offer ends.
- You need access at launch and accept the seller’s delivery and refund terms.
- The preorder lets you reserve a known price, where the seller explicitly states that the price is locked.
Reasons to wait
- The game’s quality, performance or localization is still unknown and you would benefit from reviews.
- The “bonus” is a small digital item that does not justify early payment.
- You may change platform, territory or budget before release.
- The seller does not guarantee arrival by the release date or has a narrow cancellation window.
What to verify on the exact game listing
Publisher-wide marketing language is not enough. A preorder offer is a bundle of conditions attached to one SKU, platform and market.
Edition and platform
- Confirm the full edition name: standard, deluxe, collector or another label.
- Check the supported platform and generation. A bonus or upgrade may apply to one platform but not another.
- Confirm the selling territory and currency. Release dates, taxes, stock and consumer policies can vary by country.
- Look for a separate listing if the game has physical and digital versions; they can have different payment and cancellation rules.
Release date and cutoff
Record the stated release date and time zone, then find the bonus cutoff. A preorder placed after the cutoff may still reserve the game but not qualify for an incentive. If the publisher changes the street date, the seller may update the product page rather than silently preserving the original date.
Bonus format and availability
Determine whether the bonus is on the disc or cartridge, packed as a physical item, or delivered as a download code. A physical box can therefore depend on a code for part of its advertised content. Check whether the code is region-locked, whether it expires, and whether it is supplied immediately or only after payment is completed.
Nintendo’s US support guidance says bonus content is offered only occasionally and that eligible bonus codes become available after payment is processed and the software is preloaded. That means a preorder alone is not proof that a code is already available.
When will you be charged?
Payment timing is one of the biggest differences between storefronts. “Preorder” does not mean “pay later.” Read the payment paragraph before confirming the order and make sure the card, wallet balance or payment method will still work on the charge date.

If a Nintendo eShop payment fails, Nintendo’s US guidance says the preorder can be canceled. A failed payment can therefore cost you the reservation or any associated bonus, so update expired cards and check wallet funds in advance.
Can I cancel a game preorder?
Cancellation rights depend on the storefront, the date, and whether downloading or streaming has begun. Save the order number and read the policy before you buy; do not assume a retailer’s physical-return policy also covers a digital license.

Nintendo says a digital preorder can be canceled before payment is processed and before the software is preloaded. Once either event occurs, the stated cancellation route may no longer be available. This is a storefront-specific example, not a general rule for every Nintendo region or every seller.
PlayStation Store example (US)
PlayStation Store US says a preorder refund may be requested before release or within 14 days of purchase, provided downloading or streaming has not started. The policy has exact terms and exceptions, so check the current version for your account and content type before relying on the 14-day period.
Physical-store example
Bandai Namco Store’s US FAQ says preorders can be canceled up to eight days before release. It also says unopened physical products may be returned within 30 days of receipt, subject to its returns policy. A cancellation deadline and a post-delivery return window are separate rules: missing the first does not automatically create the second.

How to protect your cancellation option
- Capture the listing, edition, bonus terms and promised date when you order.
- Record the exact charge date or the event that triggers payment.
- Do not start a download or stream if the digital policy requires it to remain unstarted.
- Set a calendar reminder several days before the stated cancellation cutoff.
- Use the seller’s account page or support channel and keep the confirmation of any cancellation or refund.
Will a physical preorder arrive on release day?
Not necessarily. A release date is the date the publisher permits sale or delivery, while your parcel still has to be packed, handed to a carrier and transported to your address. Warehouse location, destination, shipping method, weekends, holidays and carrier delays all matter.
Bandai Namco Store’s US shipping information says it tries to deliver on or near the street date but cannot guarantee delivery on that date. Nintendo’s US support page says physical prepurchases ship one to three business days after release. Neither statement promises that every customer will be playing on launch day.
For a launch-day requirement, compare the seller’s dispatch timing with the carrier’s delivery estimate and choose a service that explicitly offers a date guarantee, if available. If the listing only says “ships on release” or “near release,” plan for arrival after launch.
Questions to ask about a physical copy
- Does “release date” mean dispatch or delivery?
- Is the item shipped from a domestic warehouse, and are weekends excluded from the estimate?
- Does the box contain the full game or a download code?
- Will a delayed street date automatically update on the product page and order record?
- Can the order be canceled after it enters fulfillment?

The last row describes a practical distinction rather than a promise of any particular resale value. Check the edition’s own license and code terms.
Is the deluxe or collector edition worth it?
Judge a premium edition by the items you would buy separately, not by its label. Make a two-column inventory before ordering: physical contents and digital contents. Then identify which items are exclusive, which are cosmetic or optional, and which disappear if you later change platform.

Bandai Namco Store’s US policy states that bundle and collector-edition components must be returned together for a return. That illustrates why a premium order should be treated as one package: an unwanted figure or damaged box can affect the handling of the entire return.
A simple value test
- Circle only the physical or digital items you would still want six months after launch.
- Exclude duplicate soundtracks, cosmetic items and codes you cannot use on your platform or in your region.
- Compare the remaining value with the extra price, including shipping and any taxes shown at checkout.
- Decide whether you would still buy the edition if the game received mixed reviews and the bonus had no resale value.
A preorder checklist you can use at checkout
- Identify the SKU: write down the exact game title, edition, platform, region and seller.
- Verify the release information: note the date, time zone and any announced street-date change.
- Inventory the contents: separate game, expansions, physical goods and digital codes.
- Confirm the bonus: record eligibility, cutoff, delivery method and code restrictions.
- Read payment terms: determine whether you pay immediately or near release and what happens if payment fails.
- Read cancellation terms: check the deadline and whether payment, preload, download or streaming ends the option.
- Assess delivery: distinguish dispatch from arrival and select shipping accordingly.
- Check returns: verify unopened conditions, the return period and whether bundle components must be sent together.
- Save evidence: keep the order confirmation and a copy of the listing’s material terms.
- Set reminders: schedule the cancellation cutoff and the expected charge or dispatch date.
Common preorder problems and what to do
The payment fails
Update the card or wallet immediately and check whether the seller will retry. Nintendo’s US eShop guidance says a failed payment can cancel the preorder, so do not assume the reservation remains active.
The bonus code is missing
First confirm that the order is an eligible edition and that payment and preload requirements have been met. For Nintendo’s US process, codes become available after payment is processed and the software is preloaded. If those conditions are satisfied, use the order support route and provide the order number.
The parcel is late
Check whether the seller promised delivery or only dispatch near the street date. Track the carrier scan, then contact the seller if the stated shipping window has passed. A late parcel does not automatically qualify for a refund unless the seller’s terms provide that remedy.

The release date changes
Read the updated product page and order email. Confirm whether the new date changes the charge, cancellation or bonus cutoff. Do not rely on an old screenshot if the seller has issued a formal update.
You changed your mind about a collector bundle
Act before the cancellation deadline. If the item has already shipped, inspect the returns policy, keep every component and packaging element, and remember that some policies require the complete bundle to be returned together.
What a preorder does—and does not—promise
Square Enix defines a preorder generally as an order placed before a product’s official release, intended to ensure receipt upon release. In practice, that intention is subject to stock handling, payment authorization, shipping capacity and the seller’s stated terms. A preorder can reserve an order; it cannot by itself guarantee a launch-day parcel, a particular bonus after its cutoff, or a refund after digital access begins.
The safest decision is therefore conditional: preorder when the exact edition offers something you value, the payment and cancellation rules fit your budget, and the delivery promise is acceptable. Otherwise, wait for reviews and a confirmed in-stock listing, then buy the version that matches what you actually want.
