Fate/Extra is a role-playing game set in a digital world on the Moon, where Masters and Servants compete in a Moon Holy Grail War. You can approach it as a distinct Fate story; the official sources reviewed do not establish that you must finish Fate/stay night, an anime, or another series entry first. The original launched in Japan for PSP in 2010. Its remake, Fate/Extra Record, is scheduled for worldwide release on January 28, 2027, with a redesigned deck-based battle system.
What is Fate/Extra about?
The advertised premise for Fate/Extra Record places the Moon Holy Grail War inside SE.RA.PH, a digital world hidden on the Moon. Masters and their Servants compete for the Holy Grail in a tournament the PlayStation Store describes as involving 128 pairs. The player explores dungeons, develops a Servant, meets rival pairs, and gathers information about opponents before battles. PlayStation Store’s official listing describes the remake’s premise; it should not be treated as a word-for-word account of every detail in the 2010 PSP game.

That setup gives Fate/Extra a different setting from the familiar Fate/stay night conflict. The Moon, a digital environment, and the tournament structure shape this entry’s story. This is a spoiler-light overview: it leaves character identities, later revelations, and endings undisclosed.
Do you need to know the rest of Fate first?
No required cross-franchise play order is established by the official sources reviewed. PlayStation Blog identifies Fate/Extra as the Fate series’ first RPG, while describing the wider franchise as having begun with Type-Moon’s PC game Fate/stay night in 2004. The official Fate/Extra Record site dates the original PSP game to July 22, 2010. Those facts place Extra within a larger multimedia franchise, but do not make prior viewing or play a stated prerequisite. PlayStation Blog’s announcement provides the franchise and game context, and the official title site gives the original’s Japanese release date.
#1 Best Overall
- Engrossing Story: Written by the creator of the original Fate series of PC games, Kinoko Nasu, the story of Fate/EXTRA will not only appeal to long time fans of the Fate universe, via the inclusion of many familiar characters, but will also appeal to RPG fans looking for a deep, non-formulaic storyline that delves into such mature themes as loyalty, death, love, and what it means to be human
- Extensive replay value: Multiple story paths, each with their own unique dialog trees and character interactions that lead to different endings.
- Intuitive, Fast-paced Battle System: Using Guards, Attacks, and Breaks in combination with powerful Special Moves and Magic Spells, players are required to plan out their attacks to effectively counter their opponent's moves and emerge victorious from potentially deadly encounters.
For a newcomer, the practical approach is to treat Fate/Extra as its own Moon-centered RPG entry rather than assume it follows a universal viewing or playing sequence. The available official information does not prescribe an order across the franchise’s games, anime, novels, manga, and other media.
How does the original game play, and what changes in Record?
The 2010 original is a PSP RPG, and PlayStation Blog calls it the first RPG in the Fate series. The official sources reviewed do not provide enough detail to give a reliable account of its exact combat mechanics or dungeon structure. The following battle description applies to the remake, not the PSP original.

Original Fate/Extra
The original’s confirmed format is a role-playing game released for PSP in Japan. A complete mechanical comparison with the remake is not established by the official descriptions cited here, so the remake’s advertised command-card system should not be projected backward onto the original.

Marvelous and PlayStation describe Fate/Extra Record as a remake with an expanded narrative, updated presentation, and overhauled battles. Its advertised combat combines turn-based strategic battles with customizable decks of Command Cards. PlayStation Blog describes Attack, Guard, and Skill commands, with available commands varying by Servant; players can find new commands in Arena treasure and by defeating powerful foes. Marvelous Games also says the three playable Servants offer different combat approaches. See PlayStation Blog’s system overview and Marvelous Games’ game page.
Rank #3
The confirmed contrast is therefore a PSP RPG versus a remake with expanded narrative and redesigned, deck-based battles. The publishers’ descriptions do not provide a full side-by-side inventory of changes or specify exactly how much the story differs.
When and where can you play Fate/Extra Record?
Marvelous USA announced a worldwide release date of January 28, 2027, and physical editions for Nintendo Switch and PS5. Its announcement also lists Japanese audio and written-language options including English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Japanese. These are announced release details, not confirmation that an edition is already available to buy. Check the publisher’s current listing near release for platform, edition, and language availability in your region: Marvelous USA’s release announcement.
Rank #4
Platform announcements have not been identical across regions and dates. PlayStation Blog’s September 3, 2026 announcement discussed PS4 and PS5; the later Marvelous USA announcement named Nintendo Switch and confirmed physical editions for Switch and PS5. Do not assume every platform or edition is offered in every region. The sources cited here also do not establish the original PSP game’s current legitimate storefront availability.

Fate/Extra is an early game entry in a much broader franchise, but its identity as an RPG and its Moon setting distinguish it from the franchise’s starting point in Fate/stay night. PlayStation Blog has described Fate’s reach across more than 100 titles spanning games, anime, novels, manga, apps, and other media; that figure refers to the franchise across formats, not to games alone. The PlayStation Blog announcement attributes the description to Aniplex’s Takashi Kimura.
Best Value
If you are deciding whether to start here, the useful distinction is simple: Fate/Extra offers a Moon-centered RPG story, while Fate/Extra Record is the forthcoming remake with a refreshed presentation and a new battle design. Neither the official background information nor the remake announcements reviewed here define a required order for experiencing the rest of Fate.
