Short answer: an unmodified PS5 is not a general-purpose PS2 disc player. Sony’s documented backward-compatibility support is centered on PS4 games, while PS2 Classics on PS5 are a curated selection rather than the complete PS2 catalogue. A jailbroken PS5 can potentially run the community-developed PS5SX2 emulator, but that route requires an eligible console, compatible homebrew components, your own PS2 BIOS and games, and a willingness to live with untested firmware combinations and unfinished behavior.
What a standard PS5 can—and cannot—play
Sony’s official compatibility guidance describes the PS5 as supporting the overwhelming majority of PS4 titles. It does not establish broad native support for original PS2 discs. Sony also states that PS3 discs are not supported, which is a useful warning against assuming that inserting an older PlayStation disc will work simply because the console has an optical drive.

There is an official PS2 Classics catalogue for PS5, but it is curated. A game being released for PS2 does not mean that its original disc can be inserted into an unmodified PS5, nor that the title is automatically available as a digital Classic. Check the current store listing for your region and the exact game before changing your console.

PS5SX2 is an unofficial, community-developed port of the PCSX2 emulator for jailbroken PS5 systems. It is not a Sony feature, a supported PlayStation product or a commercial emulator. Its maintainers describe it as a passion project and explicitly warn users to “Expect rough edges.” That wording matters: advertised features are capabilities of the project, not a promise that every game will boot, render correctly or run at full speed.
#1 Best Overall
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
The project advertises native emulation, resolution scaling of up to six times, visual filters, configurable settings, save states and per-game patches. Those options can make an older game look better on a modern display, but they also increase the number of settings and possible failure points. A patch that helps one title may do nothing for another or introduce a new graphical problem.
Current reporting dated October 10, 2026 describes support for original PS2 DVD discs, including discs from different regions, as well as several image formats. That report also notes a hardware limitation: PS5 optical drives cannot read standard CDs. Consequently, a PS2 title released on CD cannot be used through the PS5’s optical drive even if the emulator itself could emulate the game. Physical DVD support is not the same as universal game compatibility.
Requirements you must verify first
An actually supported console and system software
PS5SX2’s published development configuration is a PS5 Pro running firmware 11.40. The maintainer says other PS5 models and firmware versions have not been tested. This is not a jailbreak compatibility chart, and it does not prove that every PS5 Pro on 11.40—or any other model—can run the current build.
Jailbreak exploits and payload support change quickly. Do not update or downgrade your console because an old guide says a particular version is useful, and do not assume that a console eligible today will remain eligible after a system-software change. Before doing anything, identify the exact hardware model and installed firmware, then consult current, reputable compatibility information for that combination. If no current information covers your console, treat that as a stop sign rather than an invitation to experiment.
Homebrew components and storage access
The project documentation lists the PS5SX2 Helper payload and supporting components, plus ShadowMountPlus. These are parts of the homebrew environment that lets the emulator access files and run on a modified console. They are not ordinary PS5 settings, and installing one component does not guarantee that the others will work with your firmware.

- Drive through the largest GTA environment ever -- The game has three cities players can explore, for a gaming area 5 times larger than Vice City
- Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles
- Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
- New graphics elements as cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them
- Advanced role-playing elements -- Unlike previous GTA characters, Carl can swim and he needs to eat to survive
Plan for storage management as well. Disc images are large, and emulator data, save states and patches need writable space. Keep more than one backup of important saves before testing a new build. A failed payload or an interrupted write can leave you troubleshooting the console environment rather than the game.
Your own BIOS dump
PS5SX2 requires a BIOS taken from your own PlayStation 2. The project states, “No BIOS, games or keys come with PS5SX2.” The emulator does not supply a universal BIOS file for you to download, and a random file from an archive is not a substitute for following the project’s stated requirement.
PCSX2’s own FAQ follows the same model: users provide a BIOS dump from an original PS2 console. This requirement is separate from owning a PS5. If you no longer have a PS2, the emulator route may require obtaining compatible original hardware before you can create the required dump.
Your own games
The project instructions are framed around games supplied by the user, commonly as ISO files. PCSX2 documentation likewise describes using original games from disc or user-created ISO/CSO images. The project does not bundle a game library, keys or disc images.
Copyright and game-copying rules vary by jurisdiction and by the circumstances of a particular backup. The available project guidance does not resolve those legal questions. Keep your use within the laws that apply where you live, and do not treat possession of a disc as a universal answer to every copying or distribution rule.

Physical discs: DVD support has an important exception
There are two different questions: whether the emulator can run a game image, and whether the PS5 can read the physical disc you own. Reporting on the current PS5SX2 release says original PS2 DVDs can be used, including discs from different regions. It also says a PS5 optical drive cannot read standard CDs.
- DVD-format PS2 games: potentially relevant to the project’s physical-disc support, subject to the title’s own compatibility.
- CD-format PS2 games: cannot be read from a physical disc by the PS5 optical drive; you would need a permitted image made by another means and the project’s normal BIOS and file requirements.
- Any physical title: regional disc support does not guarantee correct video modes, audio, timing, controls or save behavior in every game.
Do not buy a disc solely because a headline says “PS2 discs work.” Check the game’s format, whether the exact title is known to run, and whether you already have a lawful way to create or use the required image.
What “works” should mean in practice
Emulation compatibility is not a single yes-or-no number. A title may boot but fail during a cutscene, display broken textures, run at an unstable frame rate, lose audio, or require a per-game patch. Save states can be convenient, yet they are not always interchangeable across emulator versions. A resolution multiplier can improve menus and 3D scenes while exposing texture or post-processing bugs that were less visible at native resolution.
Use the project’s own compatibility information for the specific game and build you intend to use. Treat claims such as “up to six-times resolution” as a maximum setting offered by the software, not a result guaranteed on every title or console. The maintainer’s statement that development occurs on a PS5 Pro with firmware 11.40 is especially important when interpreting performance reports from other hardware.
A cautious checklist before modifying anything
- Name the target game. Check whether it is already offered as an official PS2 Classic in your region. If it is, a supported download may solve the problem without altering the console.
- Record your console details. Write down the exact PS5 model, system-software version, storage configuration and whether it has a disc drive.
- Verify current exploit information. Find current documentation that explicitly covers that model and firmware. Do not infer eligibility from the PS5 Pro/11.40 development note.
- Read the project requirements completely. Confirm that the PS5SX2 Helper payload, supporting components and ShadowMountPlus are available for your environment before starting.
- Prepare legitimate source material. Make sure you can dump a BIOS from your own PS2 and create or use your own game images as required. Remember that a PS5SX2 download contains none of these items.
- Back up saves and important data. A homebrew experiment should not be the only copy of irreplaceable saves, captures or settings.
- Decide how you will recover. Know how to return to a normal, supported console state if the modification stops working. If you cannot describe that recovery path, postpone the project.
- Accept that online and account consequences are unresolved here. Current sources do not establish a dependable, universal answer about PSN access, account standing or warranty effects for every jailbreak method. Verify those policies from current authoritative sources before proceeding.
How the main alternatives compare
| Route | What it offers | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Official PS2 Classics on PS5 | Supported downloads for selected PS2 titles. | The catalogue is curated, not the complete PS2 library. Availability can vary by region and can change. |
| PS5SX2 on a jailbroken PS5 | Community emulation, advertised scaling, filters, save states, patches and reported DVD-disc support. | Requires an eligible jailbreak environment, your own BIOS and games; the documented test setup is narrow and the project warns of rough edges. |
| Original PS2 | Original hardware and direct use of PS2 discs. | You must obtain and maintain the console and connect it to a modern display. The cited material does not establish current hardware prices. |
| PCSX2 on a computer | PC emulation with user-supplied BIOS and games, from disc or image files. | Requires a suitable computer and a separate setup; it does not turn the PS5 into a PS2. |
| Selected early PS3 models | Some early PS3 systems can play PS2 discs. | Support depends on the exact PS3 model. Verify model-level compatibility before buying. |
Compare these routes using the game you actually want, not a generic “PS2 support” label. The decisive questions are whether that title is available, whether you need a physical disc, what hardware you already own, how much setup you can tolerate and whether you want a supported console for online use.

Costs, effort and risk are different kinds of trade-off
No reliable current price is established for the hardware options in the available material, so a precise budget would be misleading. An official Classic normally has the lowest technical effort but may not include your game. Buying an original PS2 or a compatible early PS3 adds hardware, cables and display concerns. PCSX2 shifts the requirement to a computer. PS5SX2 may avoid buying another playback device, but only if your existing PS5 is eligible and you already have access to the BIOS and games it requires.
Also separate reversible inconvenience from policy risk. Changing emulator settings or replacing a game image is usually a troubleshooting task. Firmware changes, jailbreak maintenance and possible effects on online services, warranty or account status are policy-sensitive matters that the cited sources do not settle. Do not let the promise of higher resolution obscure those larger uncertainties.
If you still choose the homebrew route
Keep the process conservative and project-specific rather than following a generic “jailbreak any PS5” video. First confirm the exact model and firmware against current compatibility information. Next, obtain the project’s current requirements and verify that its helper payload, supporting components and ShadowMountPlus match that environment. Prepare your own BIOS dump and game image before expecting the emulator to launch. Finally, test one title at a time at default settings, record which build and settings work, and add enhancements such as scaling or filters only after the baseline is stable.
Do not treat a successful launch as proof that the setup is complete. Test loading, a normal save, a save-state restore, a second boot and any disc-swapping or multi-disc behavior your title needs. Keep an untouched backup of your original game data and avoid replacing a known-good emulator build immediately when a new release appears.

A physical disc is not detected
Confirm whether the game is DVD- or CD-format. The reported PS5 optical-drive limitation excludes standard CDs. For a DVD, detection still does not prove that the individual title is compatible.
The game boots but has glitches
Return to default resolution and filters, then consult title-specific compatibility notes. Try a documented per-game patch only when it is intended for your emulator version. Record changes so you can undo them.
Saves behave unexpectedly
Test an in-game memory-card save as well as a save state, and keep backups before changing builds. Save states are emulator data, not a replacement for every original-game save mechanism.

Jailbreaking a PS5 solely for PS2 games is a specialist project, not an ordinary compatibility setting. If your game is in the official PS2 Classics catalogue, that supported route is simpler. If you want broad physical-disc coverage with minimal experimentation, original PS2 hardware or a verified compatible alternative may be more predictable. PS5SX2 is worth considering only when you understand the eligibility uncertainty, can supply your own BIOS and games, accept that CD-format discs cannot be read by the PS5 drive, and are comfortable with a community project whose tested hardware and firmware range is limited.
