Before you order a new tabletop rulebook, confirm which game and rules your group plans to use. For Dungeons & Dragons, decide whether your table is using the revised 2024 fifth-edition core books. For Star Wars, choose the specific RPG line first: books from different lines are not interchangeable. Then match the purchase to your role, preferred format, and region.
Start with the game and rules your group will play
A D&D book does not provide rules for a Star Wars RPG, and a core book for one Star Wars line is not a substitute for another line’s book. Before buying, ask your Dungeon Master or Game Master what rules the group uses, what books it already owns, and whether the purchase is meant for one player or the whole table.

For D&D, understand what changed in the 2024 core books
Wizards of the Coast describes the 2024 core rulebooks as revised and expanded fifth-edition books, not a new edition. Its FAQ says existing adventures and supplements work with the 2024 core rules. That is useful if your group already owns older fifth-edition material, but agree on which rules everyone will use before mixing books. Read the D&D Beyond FAQ.

For Star Wars, select the RPG line before the rulebook
“Star Wars RPG” can mean distinct game lines. The official product pages reviewed for this guide cover Force and Destiny and Edge of the Empire; they do not establish a complete comparison of every Star Wars roleplaying system. Pick the line that suits the campaign your group wants, then buy a book for that exact line.

Force and Destiny
The publisher describes the Force and Destiny Core Rulebook as the starting point for a campaign in that line. It is a core-book option when your group has chosen Force and Destiny. View the Force and Destiny Core Rulebook page.

Edge of the Empire has both a Beginner Game, presented as an introduction to roleplaying concepts, and a full Core Rulebook for starting or continuing campaigns. Check format and region before ordering D&D books
D&D purchase options differ by location and format. According to the D&D Beyond purchase FAQ, the Marketplace offers physical books and physical-plus-digital bundles to US customers, while digital-only D&D Beyond content is available worldwide. The international D&D Store offers physical-plus-digital bundles to non-US customers. Local game stores sell physical books without digital copies or bundle options. - Game: Is the group playing D&D or a Star Wars RPG?
- Rules line: For D&D, has the group agreed on its rules version? For Star Wars, which exact RPG line is the campaign using?
- Role: Are you a player, a DM or GM, or buying a shared reference for the group?
- Entry point: Does the chosen Star Wars line offer a Beginner Game that fits your needs, or does the group want its full core book?
- Format and location: Do you want print, digital, or a bundle, and is that option available in your region?
