Chipotle Mexican Grill can keep growing through new restaurants, digital ordering and convenience formats, but its latest results show why the stock requires more than a revenue-growth headline. In fiscal 2025, revenue increased 5.4% to $11.9 billion mainly because of new locations, while comparable-restaurant sales declined 1.7% and transactions fell 2.9%. A prospective shareholder therefore has to judge two separate questions: whether Chipotle can build profitable units at scale, and whether the price already assumes that success.
This guide explains Chipotle’s restaurant economics, the evidence behind its growth plans, the principal operating risks and a practical way to assess valuation. The market figures are time-stamped, not a price target or personal investment recommendation.

What you are buying when you buy CMG
Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (NYSE: CMG) is primarily a company-owned fast-casual restaurant operator. It earns revenue when guests visit restaurants, order through digital channels or use pickup services. Guest traffic and average check determine sales; menu pricing and product mix affect how much of each sale remains after ingredients; labor productivity, staffing and restaurant execution influence operating margin.

That gives Chipotle a possible route into additional countries without making the entire footprint company-owned, but it is not yet a large contributor. At December 31, 2025, only 14 of the company’s 4,056 restaurants were international partner-operated locations.

Management and investors track comparable-restaurant sales, transactions, average check, new-unit openings, restaurant-level costs and digital sales. Those measures answer different questions. A higher average check can lift revenue through pricing or mix even when fewer guests visit. New stores can raise total sales while mature-store demand weakens. A sound investment thesis must keep these effects separate.
FY2025 operating snapshot
The figures below come from Chipotle’s February 3, 2026 release covering the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025. They describe the business before the company’s scheduled third-quarter 2026 update.
| Measure | FY2025 result | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $11.9 billion, up 5.4% year over year | Top-line growth was driven primarily by new restaurants. |
| Comparable-restaurant sales | Down 1.7% | Mature-store demand weakened. |
| Transactions | Down 2.9% | Fewer visits were the main pressure on comparable sales. |
| Average check | Up 1.2% | Pricing or sales mix partly offset lower traffic. |
| Digital sales | 36.7% of food-and-beverage revenue | Digital ordering is a material part of the sales channel. |
| Restaurant count | 4,056 at year-end, including 14 international partner-operated units | The domestic company-owned base remains the economic core. |
| Company-owned openings | 334 during 2025; 257 included a Chipotlane | Expansion is the central growth lever and execution test. |
| International partner-operated openings | 11 during 2025 | International growth is still at an early scale. |
| Food, beverage and packaging costs | 29.6% of revenue, versus 29.8% in 2024 | Food-cost efficiency improved slightly despite commodity and tariff pressure. |
| Labor costs | 25.1% of revenue, versus 24.7% in 2024 | Wages and lower sales volumes pressured the cost ratio. |
| Net income | $1.54 billion, versus $1.53 billion in 2024 | Profit growth was modest relative to restaurant expansion. |
| Diluted EPS | $1.14, versus $1.11 in 2024 | Per-share earnings increased slightly. |
| Share repurchases | $2.4 billion at an average price of $42.54 per share | Buybacks were a significant use of capital in 2025. |
Why revenue growth did not equal stronger underlying demand
Opening hundreds of restaurants adds sales even if established locations are serving fewer transactions. That is what the 2025 pattern illustrates: the overall business expanded, but comparable sales and traffic were negative. For an investor, the distinction matters because a new-store contribution is not a permanent substitute for healthy demand at the existing base.

When reviewing later quarters, compare total revenue with comparable sales and transactions rather than relying on revenue alone. A durable recovery would normally show improving traffic, not just higher prices or a larger store count. Conversely, a period of strong new-unit growth can mask a weakening customer proposition until the opening contribution slows.
Average check growth can come from menu prices, product mix or customers buying more. It can protect sales and food-cost dollars, but aggressive pricing may eventually affect traffic or value perceptions. The useful question is whether price and mix gains are covering costs while retaining guests, not whether the average check is rising in isolation.
Growth drivers to test
New restaurant development
Chipotle opened 334 company-owned restaurants in 2025, making unit growth the most visible source of incremental revenue. New locations require site selection, construction spending, trained managers and hourly staff. They also take time to reach mature sales levels. The investment case improves when new stores open on schedule, attract customers without excessive discounting and earn returns that justify the capital deployed.

Expansion can become less predictable as the network grows. Prime sites may be harder to secure, labor markets can vary by region and a newer market may need more time to build awareness. Track net openings, closures, opening costs, sales ramps and restaurant-level margins together. A rising count by itself does not prove that each additional unit is economically attractive.
Chipotlane convenience formats
Chipotlanes are dedicated lanes or pickup arrangements intended to make digital orders more convenient. Of the company-owned restaurants opened in 2025, 257 included a Chipotlane. Chipotle says the format is helping enhance guest access and convenience and increase new-restaurant sales, margins and returns. That is management’s stated rationale, not an independently verified guarantee.
The format should therefore be evaluated through reported evidence: sales and margin differences between comparable formats, construction and maintenance costs, digital-order throughput and customer use. A lane that increases convenience but adds substantial capital or operational complexity may not improve returns in every market.
Digital ordering and loyalty
Digital sales accounted for 36.7% of food-and-beverage revenue in 2025. Digital channels can improve convenience, support pickup formats and give the company more opportunities to communicate with loyalty members. They also carry costs, including order preparation, technology, payment processing and potential service bottlenecks during busy periods.
Future reports should be read for more than the digital percentage. Look for whether digital users produce profitable incremental orders, whether throughput remains reliable and whether digital demand complements or merely shifts orders away from the counter. A high mix is useful only if the associated economics remain attractive.

Menu innovation and pricing can lift average check and keep the brand relevant. The 2025 results show that price or mix gains partly offset lower transactions, while management attributed some food-cost improvement to menu price increases and efficiencies. Investors should test whether new products generate repeat visits, whether pricing remains competitive and whether promotions protect frequency without eroding margin.

International expansion
International partner-operated restaurants represent a potential long-term runway, but the starting base is small: 14 of 4,056 restaurants at the end of 2025. Meaningful contribution would require successful entry into additional markets, local supply chains, partner execution and a menu and operating model that travel well. International growth should be treated as an option with execution risk, not as an established earnings engine.
Costs, margins and restaurant economics
Restaurant sales do not automatically become shareholder earnings. Food, beverage and packaging costs were 29.6% of revenue in 2025, slightly better than 29.8% in 2024. Chipotle attributed the improvement to menu price increases and efficiencies, partly offset by beef and chicken inflation and tariffs enacted in 2025.
Labor moved in the opposite direction, reaching 25.1% of revenue from 24.7%. The company cited wage inflation and lower sales volumes, partly offset by menu price increases. Staffing affects both existing-unit margins and the pace of expansion: a store that cannot hire, train and retain employees may have shorter hours, slower service or delayed openings.
Margin analysis should distinguish temporary commodity movements from structural pressure. Beef, chicken, produce, packaging and transportation can change at different rates. Pricing may recover some inflation, but customers may resist repeated increases. At the same time, lower traffic reduces operating leverage because many restaurant costs do not fall in proportion to sales.
For each new-unit cohort, ask whether sales ramps, labor productivity and food costs support acceptable returns after construction and pre-opening expenses. Company-wide margins can look stable while a large opening program is still consuming capital. Cash flow after restaurant investment is therefore more informative than earnings alone for judging self-funded expansion.
Key risks before buying
Traffic and consumer spending
The decline in comparable sales and transactions indicates that customer traffic was a real pressure in 2025. If consumers reduce restaurant visits, trade down or become more price-sensitive, Chipotle may need promotions or further price increases. Continued traffic weakness would make the company more dependent on opening stores to produce growth and could reduce operating leverage in the existing base.

Food safety and brand trust
Chipotle’s annual filing identifies food-safety incidents as a risk to reputation, sales and costs. A serious event can affect more than the location where it occurs: customers may avoid the brand broadly, regulators may increase scrutiny and remediation can be expensive. This is a disclosed business risk, not evidence of a current outbreak.
Competition
The company competes with fast-casual, quick-service and casual-dining operators on taste, price, food quality, service, location, convenience, reputation, cleanliness and ambience. Competitors can respond with lower prices, new formats, faster digital experiences or menu changes. Chipotle must preserve a differentiated proposition while keeping prices acceptable and service consistent.
Wages, hiring and execution
Higher labor expense can compress margins even when sales rise. Recruitment, training, retention and manager quality become more difficult as the restaurant base expands. Understaffing can damage speed and hospitality; excessive staffing can erase the benefit of higher sales. Watch labor as a percentage of revenue, staffing levels, service metrics and management commentary on wage rates.
Ingredients, supply and tariffs
Beef and chicken inflation and 2025 tariffs already offset part of the food-cost benefit. Ingredient availability, weather, disease, logistics and trade policy can create additional volatility. Supply disruption may force substitutions or menu changes, while passing every cost increase to guests can hurt traffic.
Opening pace and returns
Expansion creates value only when locations earn satisfactory returns. Poor site selection, slower market maturation, construction delays or a shortage of trained managers can reduce the payoff from a high opening count. A slowdown in openings may expose weak mature-store demand, while an aggressive pace may stretch capital and operating capacity.

Valuation and capital-allocation risk
A strong company can still be a poor investment if its earnings and cash flow fall short of the expectations embedded in the share price. Buybacks can improve per-share results when shares are repurchased below intrinsic value, but they can destroy value when the opposite is true. Repurchases also depend on available cash and market conditions.

How to frame CMG valuation
Stock Analysis reported a $30.40 closing price for CMG on October 12, 2026, a market capitalization of $38.47 billion and a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 28.18. These are a secondary provider’s point-in-time calculations, not company guidance. The quote and multiples should be refreshed immediately before making an investment decision, especially because Chipotle had not yet reported its scheduled third-quarter 2026 results.
A single P/E threshold cannot establish fair value. Start by translating the price into operating assumptions:
- How much of future sales comes from new restaurants, and how much from comparable-store growth?
- Do transactions recover, or does the model rely mainly on pricing and mix?
- Can Chipotlane locations maintain their expected sales, margin and return benefits as the format spreads?
- What labor, food, tariff and occupancy assumptions are embedded in normalized margins?
- After construction and maintenance spending, how much cash remains for repurchases?
- What happens to earnings if openings slow, traffic weakens or margins revert?
Use scenarios rather than a label such as “cheap” or “expensive.” The framework below shows the variables to change; it does not supply an intrinsic-value estimate.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Scenario | Operating assumptions to test | Valuation question |
|---|---|---|
| Slower expansion | Fewer openings, longer sales ramps and weaker international contribution | Would the existing restaurant base support the current multiple? |
| Traffic pressure | Comparable sales and transactions remain negative, with limited pricing power | How much margin and cash flow would be lost through lower operating leverage? |
| Execution success | Healthy traffic, productive Chipotlanes, reliable staffing and sustained opening returns | Do the resulting earnings and cash flows justify the price after a reasonable discount rate? |
| Cost shock | Higher wages, beef or chicken costs, produce costs or tariffs | Can pricing and efficiencies offset the shock without damaging demand? |
Chipotle says it intends to retain earnings for operations and expansion, repurchase shares subject to market conditions and does not anticipate cash dividends in the foreseeable future. A return thesis should therefore focus on appreciation and per-share earnings or cash-flow growth rather than dividend income.
A practical checklist before placing an order
- Set the valuation date. Record the current share price, market capitalization, earnings measure and cash-flow measure from current filings or a reliable market-data source.
- Separate mature-store demand from unit growth. Review comparable sales, transactions and average check alongside net restaurant openings.
- Study unit economics. Check opening costs, sales ramps, restaurant-level margins, Chipotlane performance and the time required to reach maturity.
- Stress-test costs. Model higher wages, food inflation, tariffs and a period of lower sales rather than assuming every cost increase can be passed through.
- Check cash deployment. Compare operating cash flow with restaurant investment and repurchases. Determine whether buybacks are reducing share count at a price you consider sensible.
- Define your downside. Decide what evidence would invalidate the thesis: persistent traffic declines, weaker returns on new stores, food-safety damage, margin erosion or a multiple that remains unsupported by earnings.
- Match the position to your horizon. Restaurant expansion and brand investments can take years, while the share price can react immediately to quarterly traffic and margin changes.
What to monitor next
Chipotle’s investor-relations calendar listed third-quarter 2026 results for October 28, 2026. Because that report was scheduled after the October 13, 2026 information date used here, it could change the operating and valuation inputs. Read the release and subsequent filing for comparable sales, transactions, average check, net openings, digital mix, labor and food-cost commentary, capital spending and repurchases.
The most useful update is not simply whether revenue beats or misses a forecast. Look for the composition of growth: traffic versus pricing, mature restaurants versus new units, and margin performance after labor and ingredient costs. Then recalculate the scenario that supports your purchase price.
Bottom line
Chipotle offers a clear growth mechanism—opening more restaurants while improving access through Chipotlanes and digital ordering—but FY2025 also showed negative mature-store traffic and rising labor pressure. The stock’s outcome depends on whether new-unit returns, customer demand and margins can meet the expectations reflected in the market price. Treat the October 12, 2026 quote and trailing P/E as a dated reference, refresh them after the October 28 results, and buy only if your own assumptions still provide an acceptable margin of safety.
