Nearby locating uses a direct Bluetooth connection whose practical distance changes with walls and other obstacles. Finding a tag after it leaves that connection depends on a participating Apple, Android or Galaxy device detecting the tag and relaying an approximate location through its network. Before buying, verify compatibility, how nearby locating works, the strength of the finding network in places you visit, privacy protections and unknown-tracker alerts.
Start with your phone ecosystem
A tracker is part of a platform. Apple AirTag (2nd generation) uses Apple Find My, Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 uses SmartThings Find, and compatible third-party tags appear on Google’s Find Hub list. The tag, your phone’s operating system, the required app and your account must all match. A tag that works well for one platform may offer limited or no setup and locating features on another.

| Apple AirTag (2nd generation) | Apple Find My | Nearby Apple devices can detect the tag and relay an approximate location. | Apple describes improved Precision Finding; compatible Apple hardware and operating-system versions are required. | Designed for people already using compatible Apple devices. Walls and objects can reduce Precision Finding performance. |
| Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 | Samsung SmartThings Find | Opt-in Galaxy devices in range can detect the tag and report it through Samsung’s Find Network. | Samsung states Bluetooth range of up to 120 metres without obstacles. Setup requires a compatible Galaxy phone or tablet, Android 11 or later, sufficient RAM, SmartThings Find and a Samsung account. | It is not a general-purpose tag for every Android phone. The 120-metre figure is Samsung’s manufacturer claim, not an independent real-world result. |
| Find Hub-compatible third-party tag | Google Find Hub | Participating Android devices can contribute encrypted location reports to the crowdsourced network. | Support depends on the exact model, Android version, account and region. Check Google’s current compatible-device list. | Do not assume that every third-party tag, Android phone or country has the same support or network performance. |
Apple AirTag (2nd generation)
Apple announced the second-generation AirTag in the United States at $29 for one tag or $99 for a four-pack on January 26, 2026. Those are announcement prices, not a guarantee of the current retail price, tax treatment, stock or regional pricing. Apple also says the new model has 50% farther Precision Finding range than the previous generation. That is a company comparison under Apple’s stated conditions, not a promise that every room or street will deliver that distance.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen an AirTag is outside the owner’s phone range, Find My uses nearby Apple devices to detect its Bluetooth signal and send an approximate location to the owner. Apple describes this as a crowdsourced network. Precision Finding, audible playback and map-based network location are separate functions, and each requires compatible hardware and software.

Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2
Samsung’s SmartTag2 announcement says Bluetooth range is “up to 120m without obstacles.” Treat that as a maximum manufacturer-stated figure in an unobstructed setting. Concrete, vehicles, furniture, radio interference and the orientation of the tag can all reduce a direct connection. Samsung also says that, once the tag is out of range, its Find Network relies on opt-in Galaxy users who are close enough to detect it.
Check the Galaxy phone or tablet model, Android 11-or-later requirement, available memory, SmartThings Find installation and Samsung-account sign-in before purchase. A non-Galaxy Android phone should not be assumed to provide the full SmartTag2 experience.
Find Hub-compatible third-party tags
Google maintains a list of tags that work with Find Hub. Because the list and regional availability can change, verify the exact model immediately before ordering. Find Hub’s out-of-range recovery depends on participating Android devices, their settings and their ability to reach Google’s service. Compatibility with one listed model does not establish identical range, sound, precision-finding or privacy behavior for another model.

Direct Bluetooth range
Bluetooth range is the distance at which a compatible nearby phone can communicate directly with the tag. It is not a guaranteed radius. An open room may behave differently from a reinforced building, underground garage or crowded train station. If your phone can connect directly, the app may be able to make the tag play a sound or show a nearby-finding interface, depending on the tag and phone.

The locator's slim, durable design makes it the perfect companion for wallets, keys, backpacks, suitcases, luggage and laptop bags
Apple specifically notes that walls and objects can affect Precision Finding. Samsung’s 120-metre statement excludes obstacles. Neither statement tells you how far the tag will work through several rooms, from one floor to another or inside a suitcase surrounded by metal.
Sound, directional precision and map location are different
A speaker tone helps when the tag is close enough for your phone to communicate with it and the sound is audible. Directional Precision Finding uses additional phone hardware and software; it is not available on every phone or every tracker. A map pin generated by a finding network is different again: it represents where a participating device detected the tag, and may be approximate or older than the tag’s current position.
Out-of-range recovery is crowdsourced
When your phone cannot connect directly, the tag continues advertising a Bluetooth signal. A separate participating device may detect that signal and relay an approximate location through the associated network. The tag itself is not a standalone GPS tracker with a cellular modem. It does not continuously transmit its own position from anywhere on earth.
Reports depend on another compatible device passing near the tag, having the relevant network feature enabled, and being able to submit a report. A busy city, airport or shopping centre may produce more opportunities than a remote trail or a closed building. No source establishes a universal winner or a reliable neighborhood-by-neighborhood ranking among Apple, Samsung and Find Hub networks, so treat network reach as location-dependent rather than guaranteed.

| Question | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Will it pair with my phone? | Exact phone model, operating-system version, required app, account and country support. | A tag can be physically nearby yet unusable if the platform requirements are unmet. |
| How will I find it nearby? | Bluetooth connection, sound, directional Precision Finding and the compatible-phone hardware needed for each. | These are separate capabilities; a tag may support one without offering the others on your device. |
| How can it be found elsewhere? | Whether Apple, Galaxy or Android devices participate in the relevant crowdsourced network. | Out-of-range updates require another participating device to pass close enough to detect the tag. |
| What privacy controls exist? | Encryption claims, changing Bluetooth identifiers, unknown-tracker alerts and disabling instructions. | Privacy design affects both your location reports and your ability to detect an unwanted tag. |
| Will it attach to the item? | Tag dimensions, mounting method, key-ring hole or holder, water and dust ratings as stated for that model. | A tag that cannot stay attached or be heard in its intended location is not useful, regardless of network size. |
| What will it cost now? | Current regional price, taxes, multipacks, holder costs and availability. | The AirTag announcement prices are dated US figures; live prices and bundles can differ. |
How to choose and set up a tracker
- Identify the phone platform. Note whether you use an iPhone, a Galaxy phone or another Android phone, then confirm the operating-system version and account you will use.
- Check the exact model on the platform’s compatibility page. For Find Hub tags, use Google’s current list. For SmartTag2, confirm Galaxy-device, Android 11-or-later, memory, SmartThings Find and Samsung-account requirements. For AirTag, confirm compatible Apple hardware and software.
- Decide how you will locate the item nearby. If you usually lose keys inside the house, prioritize reliable direct connection, a loud sound and, where supported, directional Precision Finding. Do not pay for a feature your phone cannot use.
- Assess the places the item travels. List airports, offices, schools, public transport, rural areas and any locations with few other people. Crowdsourced recovery is more dependent on passing compatible devices in those places than on the tag’s printed Bluetooth maximum.
- Read the privacy and safety behavior. Confirm how the platform encrypts reports, whether identifiers change, what unknown-tracker alerts look like and how to disable a tag. Keep the phone’s software current so new alert support can be delivered.
- Check attachment and operating costs. Make sure the tag can be secured to the item without blocking its speaker or signal. Add the cost of a holder or mount and verify battery-replacement information for the specific model.
- Pair it before relying on it. Install the required app, sign in, follow the pairing flow, name the item, test the sound from another room and walk far enough away to see how the app reports a lost connection. Record the account that owns the tag.
- Test recovery in a realistic place. Leave the tag with a trusted person or in a safe location, then check whether your phone shows a direct connection, a recent network report or no update. This is an observation of your surroundings, not a guarantee of future coverage.
Privacy, unwanted tracking and personal safety
What the platforms say they protect
Apple says Find My location communications are end-to-end encrypted, relay devices are anonymous and Bluetooth identifiers change frequently. Google says locations reported by Android devices are end-to-end encrypted with a key available to the owner and people the owner shares with. Google also says a participating Android phone will not contribute reports near a saved home address. These are platform statements; they are not independent security audits or a guarantee that every risk has been eliminated.
Apple and Google developed an industry specification intended to support unwanted-tracker alerts across iOS and Android for compatible trackers. Alert behavior still depends on the phone, operating-system version and tracker compatibility. Keep software updated and make sure safety notifications are enabled.
How an unknown-tracker alert works in principle
An alert is designed to tell you when a compatible tracker that is separated from its owner appears to be moving with you. Depending on the platform and device, the notification may offer a sound, identification information and instructions to disable the tracker. A missing alert does not prove that no tracker is present: compatibility, time, movement patterns, settings and software version affect detection.
Recommended Free Tools
- Keep iOS or Android and the relevant finding app updated.
- Review Bluetooth, location and safety-notification settings rather than leaving them disabled.
- If an alert appears, use the app’s sound or identification steps, look through bags and vehicle compartments, and follow the platform’s disable instructions.
- If you feel threatened, move to a safe public place and contact local emergency services or law enforcement. Do not confront a suspected tracker owner alone.
Trackers are intended for belongings. Apple’s safety guidance says they should not be used to track people or property that does not belong to you. Consent and local law still apply even when a device can technically be attached and located.

Match the tracker to common situations
Keys, bags and everyday items
For an item that is usually somewhere nearby, direct Bluetooth features matter most. A sound and a clear nearby interface can locate keys under a sofa even when no crowdsourced report is involved. Check that the tag’s attachment point and speaker are not covered by the holder you choose.
Checked luggage and travel
Airports and hotels can provide many passing devices, but a network update is still conditional. Apple says more than 50 airlines participate in Share Item Location, a feature for temporarily sharing a lost item’s location with an airline. Apple reports SITA figures showing a 26% reduction in baggage delays and a 90% reduction in luggage described as truly lost or unrecoverable; those numbers are SITA figures as reported by Apple and concern the sharing program, not a general recovery rate for every tracker.
Keep the tracker associated with your own account, follow airline rules and use the map as an aid rather than proof that a bag is in a particular room or vehicle. A last-seen airport location may remain unchanged until another compatible device detects the tag.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Remote, low-traffic locations
In a sparsely populated area, there may be no participating device near the tag. A stronger manufacturer range claim cannot compensate for a missing crowdsourced relay. For hiking or remote work, combine a tracker with an appropriate communication and emergency plan; do not treat a Bluetooth tag as a safety beacon.

Price, availability and claims to treat carefully
Use current regional listings when you buy. The only specific prices established here are Apple’s January 26, 2026 US announcement figures of $29 for one second-generation AirTag and $99 for four. Retail discounts, taxes, holder bundles and availability can change, and those announcement numbers should not be presented as a current universal price.
Separate three kinds of claim when reading a product page:
- Manufacturer maximum: Samsung’s “up to 120m without obstacles” describes a stated limit in a favorable environment.
- Company comparison: Apple’s claim of 50% farther Precision Finding range compares the second-generation AirTag with the prior generation under Apple’s conditions.
- Network behavior: Apple, Google and Samsung describe how participating devices relay reports, but none of those descriptions guarantees a specific update interval or neighborhood coverage.
Troubleshoot the result you get
The tag will not pair
- Confirm that the phone is logged into the required Apple, Samsung or Google account.
- Check the operating-system version and exact model requirements.
- Turn on Bluetooth and location permissions for the finding app.
- Remove the tag from any previous owner’s account; ownership locks can prevent a new pairing.
- Install pending app and system updates, then repeat the manufacturer’s pairing procedure.
The app says the tag is out of range
Move closer, remove thick barriers and try the sound function. If the tag remains disconnected, the phone cannot currently establish a direct Bluetooth link. Wait for a network report only if the tag’s ecosystem has a crowdsourced finding service and another participating device is likely to pass nearby.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The map location is old or missing
That usually means no participating device has recently detected the tag, the tag is not broadcasting effectively, or connectivity and account settings prevent a report. Refreshing the app cannot create a report where no relay device is present. Retrace the item’s last known route and check enclosed spaces where radio signals may be blocked.
Nearby finding is less accurate than expected
Check whether your phone supports the tag’s directional feature, then test in an open area. Walls, objects, orientation and interference can affect Precision Finding. A manufacturer’s unobstructed range should not be used to diagnose every indoor result.
Quick Recap
