What to Know Before Buying a Violent Video Game for a Teen

Before buying a violent video game for a teenager, check the exact title’s age rating, violence descriptors, rating summary and interactive features, then compare those details with your teen’s maturity and your household rules. In the United States, an ESRB Teen (T) label is generally for ages 13 and up, while Mature (M) is generally for ages 17 and up. Neither symbol is a family-specific verdict: the descriptor and context tell you what the label actually covers.

Start with the exact rating, not the box art

Ratings are a screening tool. Find the rating attached to the specific game, edition and platform you are considering. A sequel, remaster, downloadable edition or online mode can have different content from an earlier release. The U.S. Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) system is the relevant framework for games sold in the United States; other countries use their own authorities and age scales.

Read the large age symbol together with every descriptor underneath it. ESRB says descriptors identify content that helped trigger a rating or may matter to parents. A Teen label can include violence, but it can also cover suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling or infrequent strong language. A Mature label can include intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content or strong language.

ESRB category General age guidance What it can include
Teen (T) Generally ages 13 and up Violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling or infrequent strong language
Mature (M) Generally ages 17 and up Intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content or strong language

“Generally” matters. ESRB categories describe the content expected by the rating system; they do not certify that a game is suitable for every 13-year-old or unsuitable for every younger player. Your decision still depends on the kind of violence, its realism, how often it appears, and the other features your family permits.

Decode the violence descriptors

The word “violence” is too broad to make a buying decision by itself. Look for the more specific terms on the rating information.

Violence

ESRB defines Violence as scenes involving aggressive conflict. It may include bloodless dismemberment. That can describe cartoon, comic-book or fantasy conflict as well as more grounded action, so read the title-specific summary for context.

Blood and Gore

Blood and Gore means depictions of blood or mutilation of body parts. This descriptor tells you that injury effects go beyond bloodless combat, but it does not by itself tell you how realistic, frequent or prolonged those scenes are.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Intense Violence

Intense Violence refers to graphic, realistic-looking physical conflict that may involve extreme or realistic blood, gore, weapons, and depictions of human injury and death. For a family trying to avoid realistic suffering or graphic injury, this descriptor deserves particular attention.

Sexual Violence

Sexual Violence is separate from the general violence descriptor. ESRB uses it for depictions of rape or other violent sexual acts. If that subject is outside your family’s boundaries, treat the descriptor as a reason to investigate the summary before purchase rather than assuming the age symbol tells you enough.

Do not infer intensity from a single word. Two games can both carry “Violence” while differing greatly in visual style, injury detail, frequency and player involvement. Conversely, a Teen game may contain a scene that is unacceptable to your family even though it does not carry the Mature category.

Read the rating summary and check the edition

When available, the ESRB Rating Summary gives more detail about what happens and in what context. Summaries are especially useful for physical releases, but availability and wording can vary by title and edition. Check the listing for the exact platform and release you plan to buy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A summary may answer questions such as:

  • Whether violence is realistic, fantastical, animated or presented from a distant camera.
  • Whether blood, dismemberment or death is shown on screen.
  • Whether the player causes the violence directly or mainly observes it.
  • Whether the content appears in frequent gameplay, isolated cutscenes or both.
  • Whether other descriptors, such as sexual content, strong language or gambling, appear alongside violence.

If the summary does not address a specific concern, use a reputable parent-facing preview or, where practical, watch or play a portion together before buying. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises that ratings provide general guidance and do not replace sitting with children or consulting reliable parent-oriented content information.

Check features that are not part of the violence rating

ESRB’s interactive-element notices flag how a game connects to other people, services and spending systems. These notices are separate from violence descriptors, but they can change whether a game fits your household.

Online interaction and user-generated content

Look for notices about user interactions, online communication or content supplied by other players. The rating label cannot predict what another player will say, share or show during a live session. Decide whether your teen may use voice or text chat, whether friends-only play is required, and how your family will respond to harassment or unwanted contact.

Location sharing and internet access

Some games or connected services can share location information or provide unrestricted internet access. Confirm which account permissions are enabled, whether location sharing can be disabled, and whether the game opens a general browser or external links. These are privacy and supervision questions, not judgments about the game’s fictional violence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In-game purchases

An interactive notice can indicate in-game purchases. Determine whether purchases are optional cosmetic items, recurring subscriptions, competitive advantages or randomised rewards; the notice itself may not answer every detail. Set an approval requirement, spending limit or payment lock before the teen starts playing.

A practical decision process for parents

Use this sequence for each title rather than relying on a blanket rule about “violent games.”

  1. Record the exact title and version. Note the platform, edition, release and whether the game is primarily offline, online or both.
  2. Read the age category and every descriptor. Treat T and M as starting points, then identify whether the listing includes Violence, Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Violence or other concerns.
  3. Open the rating summary. Look for the type of conflict, realism, injury detail, frequency and whether the player controls the violent acts.
  4. List non-violence features. Check user interactions, user-generated content, location sharing, unrestricted internet access and in-game purchases.
  5. Compare the details with your teen. Consider age, emotional development, past reactions to frightening material, ability to stop or seek help, and whether the teen can follow online and spending rules.
  6. Set boundaries before purchase. Agree on play times, chat permissions, spending approval, privacy settings and what happens if the game causes distress or rule-breaking.
  7. Configure controls and verify them. Use the console, computer or account settings to enforce rating, time and spending limits. Test the account, not just the menu, so you know the restrictions apply to the teen’s profile.
  8. Reassess after play begins. Ask what the teen is seeing and doing, review any new online modes or downloadable content, and change the decision if the actual experience differs from the listing.

How to compare two violent games

If you are choosing between titles, compare like with like rather than asking which game is “more violent” in the abstract. A simple worksheet can keep the decision tied to evidence.

Comparison question What to record Why it matters
Age category Teen (13+) or Mature (17+), as listed by ESRB Sets the rating system’s broad content threshold
Type and realism of violence Violence, Blood and Gore, Intense Violence or Sexual Violence; realistic, fantastical or cartoon presentation Identifies the specific material your family may permit or avoid
Other descriptors Language, sexual content, gambling or other notices shown for the title A game may conflict with family rules for reasons beyond violence
Rating summary Scenes, injury detail, frequency and player context described for that edition Adds title-specific information that the symbol cannot provide
Online and user content User interactions, communication, user-generated content, location or internet access Determines supervision and privacy requirements
Purchases and controls In-game purchase notice and the limits available on the teen’s platform Shows whether spending and access rules can be enforced

Choose the title whose complete profile fits your rules, not merely the one with the lower age number. A T game with online strangers, unrestricted browsing or a sensitive descriptor may require more supervision than an offline game rated M that your family has reviewed and deliberately approved.

Match the decision to your teen and your household

Age is only one input. Consider whether your teen can distinguish fiction from real-world conduct, handle suspense or disturbing imagery, stop when asked, and tell you about uncomfortable interactions. A younger teen who is comfortable with stylised fantasy combat may still be upset by realistic injury, sexual violence or scenes involving helpless characters.

Write down non-negotiable boundaries before the purchase. Examples include no games with Sexual Violence, no realistic gore, no open voice chat, no contact with unknown players, no spending without approval, or play only in a shared room. Explain the reason and invite the teen to ask questions; a rule understood in advance is easier to follow than a surprise ban after purchase.

Previewing together can reveal context that a label cannot. Watch a gameplay segment, examine the opening scenes and review the settings menu. If the teen becomes distressed, has nightmares, is preoccupied with the material or cannot disengage, pause the game and discuss what happened rather than treating the rating as an obligation to continue.

Set parental controls before the first session

ESRB says parental controls can help limit play time, block games by ESRB rating and manage in-game spending. The exact menu names differ by console, computer, storefront and account type, so use the current instructions for the device your teen actually uses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Create a separate child or teen account. Do not share the administrator password or payment credentials.
  • Apply an age or content limit. If your rule is stricter than the ESRB category, use the stricter setting or approve individual titles manually.
  • Set time limits. Choose allowed hours and a stop time that does not interfere with sleep, school or family commitments.
  • Restrict communication. Limit voice, text, friend requests and contact from strangers as your household requires.
  • Disable or approve purchases. Require a parent password, approval prompt or zero-spend setting; remove saved payment methods when appropriate.
  • Review privacy and location options. Turn off location sharing and limit profile visibility unless there is a clear reason to keep them on.
  • Check the result from the teen account. Try launching the game, opening its online mode and attempting a purchase so you can confirm that each control works.

Controls enforce access and time rules; they do not change the violence, language or other material depicted once the game is running. Continue the conversation and review settings after updates, downloadable content or a move to another platform.

What evidence can—and cannot—tell you about violent games

The American Psychological Association (APA) has reported that the studies it reviewed suggest an association between violent video game use and increased aggressive outcomes, including after accounting for other known risk factors. That is a population-level finding about associations, not a prediction that one particular game will make one particular teen behave violently.

The same APA resolution identifies major unanswered questions. Available studies have not adequately established how outcomes vary with the amount of exposure, how long any effects persist, how game ratings or the type and degree of violence matter, how game mechanics and players’ perceptions change results, or how findings differ across demographic and cultural groups. Those limits are why a rating label cannot be converted into an individual risk percentage.

Use the evidence to justify thoughtful supervision, not to diagnose your teen or assume that buying a single title will cause violent conduct. Pay attention to your teen’s actual responses, sleep, mood, school obligations and interactions with others, and seek professional advice if behavior changes are severe or persistent.

What the numbers say about ratings and parents

ESRB reported that 65% of ratings assigned to physical and console downloadable video games in 2024 were E or E10+. This describes the mix of ESRB-rated games, not the suitability of any individual title or the proportion that contain no violence.

In a 2025 survey by Hart Research Associates, as reported by ESRB, 83% of parents with children who play video games said they were aware of ESRB ratings, and 77% said they regularly checked ratings before buying a game. Awareness and checking are useful habits, but the quality of the decision still depends on reading the descriptors, summary and interactive notices for the exact game.

A printable pre-purchase checklist

  • Is this the correct title, edition, platform and local rating authority?
  • What age category is shown, and is the teen within the stated guidance?
  • Which violence descriptors appear?
  • Does the summary mention realistic injury, blood, gore, death or sexual violence?
  • Are there other descriptors that conflict with family rules?
  • Does the game include user interaction, user-generated content, location sharing or unrestricted internet access?
  • Are in-game purchases enabled, and can they be blocked or approval-gated?
  • Can the platform enforce the needed age, time, communication and spending limits?
  • Has the teen agreed to the rules and shown they can follow them?
  • What is your plan if the game causes distress, exposes the teen to unwanted contact or leads to rule-breaking?

ESRB has quoted former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia describing the rating system as helping parents evaluate games and preventing minors from purchasing seriously violent games on their own. That is a historical statement about the value of ratings, not a current legal rule and not a substitute for checking the title’s details.
