Before choosing a suppressor, confirm three things: it is lawful for you to possess and use where you live and intend to use it; it is compatible with your exact firearm, barrel, ammunition, and firing conditions; and you know the full current transaction cost and transfer requirements. Federal paperwork does not override a state or local prohibition, and the federal tax and transfer rules changed in 2026. Verify the rules and costs with ATF and a qualified local dealer before placing an order.
First check whether possession and use are lawful where you are
Suppressor eligibility is jurisdiction-specific. ATF says it will not approve an application to make or transfer an NFA firearm when federal, state, or local law prohibits making or possessing that item. Completing a federal application therefore does not make an otherwise prohibited possession lawful.

Check the laws that apply both where you reside and anywhere you plan to possess or use the suppressor. If your circumstances or location make the answer uncertain, consult a qualified local attorney or dealer before committing money. This is not a state-by-state legality survey, and a rule that applies in one jurisdiction should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

ATF identifies Form 4 as the application for tax-paid transfer and registration of an NFA firearm. Its eForms system lists eForm 4 as available for individuals and trusts. The applicable form and requirements depend on the transaction; confirm the current instructions and your eligibility with ATF and your dealer rather than relying on an older guide.
#1 Best Overall
- Prevents your suppressor from seizing and locking onto your threads. Creates a ballistic seal.
- Prevents stuck choke tubes caused by corrosion, high stress of hot steel shot loads, extreme temperatures and pressure from repeatd trap and skeet shooting.
- The perfect lubricant for thread joints, baffle exteriors on serviceable suppressors.
- Use on all front caps, and baffle exteriors.
- Provides rust and corrosion protection in both fresh water and salt water environments.
The tax picture changed in 2026. ATF says a final rule issued May 8, 2026, amended regulations to reflect statutory changes to NFA tax remittance for certain NFA firearms; the rule took effect June 10, 2026. Do not assume a traditional tax amount or that a reported court development applies to your transaction. The available official information does not establish one outcome for every buyer and transaction in light of subsequent litigation. Ask the dealer what tax, if any, applies to your specific transfer and confirm the current legal position before filing.
Processing-time figures are snapshots, not promises
ATF reported that applications finalized in August 2026 averaged 6 days for individual eForm 4s and 20 days for trust eForm 4s. Those are monthly averages, not guarantees for a new application. ATF cautions that averages vary and some applications take longer. Check ATF’s current processing-time information when planning; do not treat a past average as a delivery date.

Check fit against the exact firearm and ammunition
“Multi-caliber” does not mean universal compatibility. Start with the specific firearm, barrel, intended ammunition, and use. Compare the suppressor’s current manufacturer specifications and manual against every item below before buying.
- Cartridge and projectile diameter: Confirm the suppressor is rated for the exact cartridge and projectile diameter. Do not infer pressure or caliber compatibility from a thread chart or a broad marketing label.
- Barrel length and host limits: Check the minimum barrel length and any host-specific operating restrictions. A rating for a cartridge alone does not establish that every barrel length or firearm action is permitted.
- Threads and muzzle dimensions: Verify the actual barrel thread pitch and muzzle dimensions using the firearm owner’s manual or the barrel itself before ordering a mount. A chart or measuring tool can help identify threads, but cannot certify that the suppressor is safe for the caliber or pressure.
- Mount system: Determine whether the model uses direct thread, a compatible adapter, or a matching muzzle device. Include the cost and compatibility of any required components, and confirm that the suppressor and mount standards match.
- Firing schedule, alignment, and ammunition: Check manufacturer limits for firing schedule and approved ammunition, as well as the host action and alignment requirements. Do not use a setup that falls outside the current model-specific guidance.
Dealer compatibility guidance can help identify what to check, but the manufacturer’s current specifications govern a particular model. If any combination of firearm, barrel, mount, and ammunition is unclear, ask the manufacturer or a qualified dealer to confirm it before use.

Budget for the complete transaction, not just the suppressor
A listed model price is only one part of the purchase. Ask the dealer for an itemized current total, including the suppressor, any applicable tax, dealer or transfer charges, mount components, and any firearm threading or other compatibility work required for your setup. The available price comparison does not establish current amounts for those additional costs, so obtain a quote for your transaction.
| Price evidence | What it establishes | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| $489–$1,129 MSRP across nine models | A secondary Popular Suppressors comparison updated September 16, 2026 reported this range; it is a limited selection, not a market average or checkout quote. | Use only as dated context. Confirm the current model price and complete transaction total with a dealer. |
| No published price for two models | The same comparison did not list prices for those two models. | Request a current quote rather than estimating from other models. |
Compare models by your setup and use
There is no useful universal “best” suppressor without specifying the firearm, cartridge, barrel length, firing use, and budget. Compare candidates on the factors that affect your particular setup:

- Manufacturer service, repair, and support provisions.
Be cautious when comparing published sound figures: measurements may use different test conditions and methods. Unless the conditions are comparable, the figures do not support a reliable ranking.
Do not treat repair guidance as permission to modify a suppressor
ATF’s 2026 open-letter listing says a complete registered silencer may be repaired or have its caliber changed under conditions that preserve the serialized frame or receiver and required markings and do not create a new firearm. This is not a do-it-yourself modification guide. For repair or caliber-change questions, use qualified service and confirm the current ATF guidance for the specific work.
