A wearable estimates sleep from sensor signals and an algorithm; its sleep-stage labels and scores are not direct measurements of brain health, nor are they automatically equivalent to polysomnography or research-grade actigraphy. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) does not establish a current consumer tracker as validated for brain-health research. Start with evidence for the exact device, software version, population and outcome—not its marketing claims.
What can a consumer sleep tracker measure?
Consumer wearables estimate sleep from signals such as movement. Depending on the device, they may also use photoplethysmography (PPG) and report measures derived from signals such as heart rate, heart-rate variability, respiratory rate or oxygen saturation. The device’s algorithm interprets these signals; a displayed sleep stage or score is not a direct reading of brain activity or a validated brain-health biomarker.

That distinction matters when a study asks about a specific sleep measure. Total sleep time and sleep-stage classification are different outcomes, and evidence for one does not establish accuracy for the other. A consumer device’s “deep sleep” estimate should not be treated as equivalent to a stage scored from polysomnography unless validation supports that comparison for the exact device and study context.
How are consumer trackers different from research actigraphy?
The AASM’s 2025 overview discusses consumer rings, watches and trackers separately from clinical and research-focused actigraphy devices. Both categories can use body-worn sensors to monitor sleep-wake patterns, but category labels alone do not establish that a device is suitable for a particular protocol. A clinical or research label is not a substitute for checking the relevant validation evidence either.

| Question | Consumer sleep tracker | Clinical or research actigraphy |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | Consumer rings, watches and trackers that estimate sleep using sensors and proprietary analysis. AASM describes this category in its 2025 actigraphy overview. | A distinct category of clinical and research-focused actigraphy devices, also described by AASM in its 2025 overview. |
| Does the category alone prove suitability for a brain-health study? | No. Validate the exact model, software, population and outcome. | No. Confirm the device and outputs fit the protocol and its intended use. |
| Access to raw data and algorithms | AASM says many consumer manufacturers limit access to raw data and protect analytic algorithms; availability varies by product. | Confirm specific outputs and access with the vendor; availability is not established by the category name. |
These distinctions are practical, not a blanket ranking. AASM notes that device accuracy varies by manufacturer and may differ across models and software versions. Its 2025 overview also cautions: “For example, many devices offer sleep staging with little validation of their accuracy outside of laboratory settings.”
What should you check before buying?
1. Match validation to the study question
Look for published performance evidence that matches the intended age group, health status and sleep outcome. Check whether a validation study assessed sleep duration, sleep-wake detection, sleep-stage classification or another measure; results for one should not be assumed to apply to another. A general accuracy claim or a study of a different population is not enough to establish fit for your protocol.
2. Identify the exact device and software
Record the model and, where available, its firmware and app versions, as well as the date of use. A validation result for an older model or software version may not transfer to a current configuration. AASM specifically notes that performance may vary by model and software version.

- Long battery life: Google Fitbit Air’s battery lasts up to a week, and fast charging gets you one day of battery life in just five minutes[6,7]
3. Confirm what data you can actually obtain
Before enrollment, ask the manufacturer or vendor what the study team can export and retain. Establish whether you can access raw signals or only summaries, what file formats are available, how long data remain accessible, and whether the system supports an API, custom reporting or remote data management. Ask whether the algorithm is described well enough for the study’s analysis and reproducibility needs. AASM reports that many consumer manufacturers limit raw-data access and protect their algorithms.
4. Check sensors and wear location against the protocol
Determine whether the device is worn on the wrist, finger, arm or another body location, and which signals it collects. Accelerometry and, where available, PPG or other sensors may be relevant in different ways depending on the study measure. More sensors do not by themselves prove better measurement of the study’s endpoint.
5. Plan for participant burden and study operations
Check battery life, charging requirements, comfort, sizing, adherence risks, upload steps and the work required to manage data. A charging interruption, poor fit or complicated upload process can undermine data collection even when a device has relevant sensors. For remote studies, confirm that participants can use the upload workflow and that the team can monitor data receipt.

6. Verify claims and regulatory scope
Check what the product is intended to do and, if a vendor makes medical claims, verify the exact cleared indication rather than treating a general regulatory statement as proof of suitability. Clearance or validation for one use does not validate a device for a different sleep measure or brain-health endpoint.
Are consumer sleep trackers accurate for brain health?
There is no basis here for treating a consumer sleep score or stage estimate as a measure that diagnoses, predicts or improves an individual’s brain health. A tracker may collect sleep-related estimates that a research team chooses to study, but the device’s suitability depends on evidence for the specific measurement and protocol. The cited AASM materials do not establish a current consumer model as validated for brain-health research.
The AASM’s 2025 overview says health-and-wellness consumer sleep tracking does not require FDA oversight and that many consumer sleep-staging features have limited validation outside laboratory settings. Those observations do not establish that every product performs the same way; AASM says accuracy varies by device and manufacturer, and can differ by model and software version.

Can a sleep tracker diagnose or treat a sleep disorder?
No. The AASM Board of Directors’ consumer sleep technology position statement says: “Given the lack of validation and United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance, CSTs cannot be utilized for the diagnosis and/or treatment of sleep disorders at this time.” This is the position statement’s guidance on consumer sleep technology for diagnosis and treatment, not a determination about every current device or every research use. It says consumer technology may support clinician interaction when used within an appropriate clinical evaluation; a consumer tracker’s output should not replace that evaluation.
