What to Know Before Buying a PS5: Games, Storage, and Accessories

The right PS5 depends on two decisions: how you obtain games and how you will manage storage. Choose the disc PS5 if you buy, borrow, resell or watch movies on discs. Choose the Digital Edition if downloads fit your library and you do not need a built-in drive. Consider PS5 Pro when supported-game visual improvements, a 2 TB listed capacity and a suitable display matter more than the standard models’ simpler setup.

Before ordering, verify the exact model sold in your market, understand that listed capacity is not the same as free space, and budget only for accessories you will actually use. Internal M.2 SSD expansion lets installed PS5 games run from the added drive; an external USB drive is primarily an archive and transfer device for PS5 games.

Which PS5 configurations are available?

Sony’s US buying page currently lists three configurations. The capacities below are specifications for the listed consoles, not promises about how much space remains available for games after system software and other reserved data. Availability, packaging and model numbers can differ by country, so check the live listing for your market before paying.

Configuration Listed capacity Disc access What to evaluate
Standard PS5 1 TB Built-in Blu-ray game-disc support; also supports digital downloads Best when you want physical and digital purchasing flexibility
PS5 Digital Edition 825 GB No built-in drive; an add-on drive is available only for compatible model groups Best for a download-first library, provided you accept digital-only purchasing and storage management
PS5 Pro 2 TB Add-on drive option, subject to Sony’s compatibility requirements Assess the value of enhanced visuals in supported games, your display and your storage needs

The standard console plays PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray Disc and also downloads games from PlayStation Store. Sony describes PS5 Pro improvements as applying to PS5 Pro-enhanced games; the benefit varies by title, so do not assume every game receives the same upgrade.

#1 Best Overall
PlayStation®5 Digital Edition (slim)
  • Model Number CFI-2000
  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately

Sony’s own description says: “Play your PS5 and PS4 game collection on Blu-ray Disc, download games from PlayStation™Store, and enjoy stunning games with spectacular graphics, 360-degree audio, and incredible control with the DualSense® wireless controller.” That wording describes the combination of physical and digital access on the disc model, rather than a requirement to buy both formats.

Choose the standard disc PS5 when flexibility matters

A built-in drive is useful if you buy boxed games, borrow from friends or libraries, trade or resell discs where that is practical, or want one machine for Blu-ray movie playback. You can still buy digital games, so the disc model does not lock you into physical media. Its 1 TB listed capacity is also larger than the Digital Edition’s listed 825 GB, although neither figure should be treated as guaranteed free space.

Choose the Digital Edition when your library is download-first

The Digital Edition is designed for purchases and downloads from PlayStation Store. It avoids an integrated drive, but every game download uses console storage and depends on your internet connection and available space. If you later decide you need discs, the optional drive is not universal: it is intended for specified slim Digital Edition model groups. Confirm the console’s exact model designation before buying the drive rather than relying on a product name alone.

Consider PS5 Pro for supported-game enhancements

PS5 Pro’s 2 TB listed capacity can reduce the immediate need for expansion, but capacity alone does not establish value. Sony positions its enhanced visuals for PS5 Pro-enhanced games, and the result differs by game. A Pro purchase makes most sense when the games you play support those enhancements and your television or monitor can show the difference. It is not a guarantee of a particular frame rate, resolution or visual mode for every title.

Disc games, downloads and the changing release policy

The practical disc-versus-digital question is about ownership habits. Physical discs can be shared or collected and do not require downloading the entire game before first use, although updates may still be required. Digital purchases are tied to your PlayStation account, can be started remotely and avoid swapping discs, but they require downloads and consume internal or expanded storage.

What the optional disc drive does

Sony says the add-on drive can play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD discs. It is intended only for specified slim Digital Edition and PS5 Pro console groups, and an internet connection is required to pair it during setup. Treat compatibility as a model-group requirement: check the CFI/model information on the console and the current accessory listing before purchase. A drive bought for an incompatible model will not solve the console’s lack of disc access.

What Sony’s January 2028 notice says

Sony’s US buying page currently displays a notice that, from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be available for purchase in digital formats only, while discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. This is the scope stated on that page; it does not say that existing discs stop working, and it does not describe every regional or publishing circumstance. Because this is a future-facing policy notice, recheck the live page immediately before buying and again before relying on it for a long-term physical-library plan.

How much storage do you really get?

The headline capacities are 1 TB for the standard disc PS5, 825 GB for the Digital Edition and 2 TB for PS5 Pro on Sony’s US buying page. They are console capacities, not a guarantee that all bytes are available for game installations. The operating system and reserved data consume part of the drive, and the space used by games varies widely. Plan around the free-space figure shown in the console’s storage settings after setup.

Why storage planning matters more on a Digital Edition

A download-only library places every installed title on internal or expanded storage. Large games, patches and add-ons can make an 825 GB listed drive feel restrictive sooner than the specification suggests. The standard model’s 1 TB listing provides more headroom, while PS5 Pro’s 2 TB listing provides the most built-in capacity of the three current configurations. None eliminates the need to remove or move games if your library grows substantially.

Internal M.2 SSD expansion versus external USB storage

Sony supports two different expansion approaches, and they are not interchangeable.

Storage method Stated capacity range or limit Can PS5 games run directly from it? Best use
Compatible internal M.2 SSD Up to 8 TB Yes, PS5 and PS4 games and media apps can run from the added high-speed SSD Permanent expansion for an installed PS5 library
External SuperSpeed USB drive 250 GB to 8 TB in Sony’s storage guidance No. PS5 games must be transferred back to console storage before playing Archive, backup-like holding space and faster reinstallation than downloading again
External USB storage for PS4 games Within Sony’s compatible capacity guidance Compatible PS4 games can be played directly from the external drive Keeping older-generation games installed without using internal space

When an internal M.2 SSD is the better purchase

Choose an M.2 SSD when you want to leave PS5 games installed and launch them without moving them first. Sony allows compatible M.2 expansion up to 8 TB. Before installation, check Sony’s current minimum performance, interface, dimensions and heatsink requirements; the exact physical fit matters as much as the advertised capacity. Install the latest PS5 system software before fitting the drive and follow Sony’s installation procedure.

Sony’s accessories catalog identifies the Western Digital SN850P as an officially licensed example. Official licensing does not remove the need to verify the exact model, capacity and current requirements for your console revision. If a listing bundles a heatsink, confirm that the complete assembly remains within Sony’s dimensional limits.

When an external USB drive is enough

An external SuperSpeed USB drive is useful when you want to store more games than the internal drive can hold, keep a rotation of PS5 titles ready to copy back, or play compatible PS4 games without consuming internal space. Sony’s guidance states a capacity range of 250 GB to 8 TB. PS5 games stored there cannot be launched directly: move them back to console storage before playing. This transfer is usually more convenient than downloading again, but it still takes time and requires sufficient free space on the console or internal M.2 drive.

How to compare an M.2 SSD or USB drive

  • Compatibility first: Match the exact Sony requirements for interface, performance, dimensions and, for M.2 drives, heatsink fit.
  • Capacity: Select enough space for the number of games you keep installed rather than buying the largest advertised option automatically.
  • Use case: Buy internal M.2 storage for direct PS5 play; buy external USB storage for archiving, transferring and playing compatible PS4 games.
  • Total cost: Compare price per capacity at the time of purchase, including any required heatsink or enclosure.
  • Warranty and returns: Check the seller’s warranty and return terms, especially when a drive is sold as a compatible bundle.
  • Model accuracy: Record the exact model number, not just a family name, so you can verify it against Sony’s current list.

Current prices, stock and comparative performance are not fixed specifications. Recheck them when you buy instead of treating an older deal or benchmark as a permanent value judgment.

Accessories: buy for a specific use

The console is usable without a premium accessory package. Sony lists additional DualSense controllers, headsets, storage, a detachable disc drive for compatible systems, a vertical stand and a charging station. Each solves a different problem.

Second DualSense controller

Buy a second controller if you regularly play local multiplayer or want a charged spare. It is optional for a solo player. Do not assume an extra controller is required for remote play, online multiplayer or ordinary single-player use.

Headset

A headset is worthwhile when you play online, need private audio or want clearer positional sound without using a television’s speakers. Choose based on your connection method, microphone needs and comfort; Sony’s accessory category alone does not establish that a premium headset is necessary.

Charging station

A charging station keeps one or two controllers organized and ready, but a controller can also be charged through the console. It is a convenience purchase, not a performance upgrade.

Vertical stand

A stand can suit your furniture and orientation preferences. Buy one only if your chosen console revision requires or benefits from the specific stand design; do not assume a stand is needed for basic operation.

Camera and other add-ons

A camera or specialized accessory should follow a particular game, streaming or communication need. The absence of one does not prevent normal PS5 gaming. Start with the console, one controller and the display you already own, then add equipment when a real use case appears.

A buying checklist before you place the order

  1. Decide how you acquire games. If you buy, borrow or play Blu-ray discs, select a disc-equipped model or verify that your exact Digital Edition or PS5 Pro model supports the optional drive.
  2. Check the market and model group. Sony’s US listings are not a promise of identical capacities or bundles elsewhere. Confirm the local listing, model/CFI designation and included items.
  3. Estimate your installed library. Use the console’s usable-space figure, not the headline capacity, and allow room for updates.
  4. Choose storage by function. Select a compatible internal M.2 SSD for direct PS5 play; select external USB storage when transfer and PS4 playback are enough.
  5. Verify current requirements. Check Sony’s latest M.2 performance, physical-size and heatsink rules, and update system software before installing an expansion drive.
  6. Match PS5 Pro to your games and display. Confirm that the titles you care about are PS5 Pro-enhanced and that your screen can show the relevant improvement.
  7. Add only necessary accessories. A second controller, headset, charging station, stand or camera should correspond to local multiplayer, audio, charging, placement or camera needs.
  8. Recheck future policy and availability. The January 2028 digital-format notice and product listings can change. Review Sony’s current pages immediately before purchase.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming listed capacity equals free space

It does not. Reserve space for system software and updates, then use the storage screen’s available-space figure when deciding whether you need expansion.

Buying an external drive expecting to play PS5 games from it

External USB storage can hold PS5 games, but Sony requires those games to be transferred back to console storage before they can be played. Use an internal compatible M.2 SSD when direct play from added storage is the priority.

Ordering a detachable drive without checking the CFI/model group

The add-on drive is limited to specified slim Digital Edition and PS5 Pro groups and needs an internet connection for setup pairing. Verify compatibility before opening the accessory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing PS5 Pro solely for the 2 TB number

Storage is only one part of the decision. Sony says visual enhancements apply to PS5 Pro-enhanced games and vary by game. Evaluate your own supported titles and display rather than assuming a universal upgrade.

Buying every accessory at launch

Additional controllers, headsets, stands and charging stations are conveniences tied to particular setups. Start with the equipment your play pattern requires and expand later.

Which PS5 is the sensible choice?

Select the standard disc PS5 when physical games or Blu-ray movies are part of your routine and you still want digital downloads. Select the Digital Edition when you are comfortable buying and storing games digitally and do not need discs now; treat the optional drive as a model-specific upgrade, not a guaranteed future fit. Select PS5 Pro when its supported-game enhancements, 2 TB listed capacity and your display justify the additional investment. In all three cases, plan storage separately: internal M.2 expansion is the direct-play path for PS5 games, while external USB storage is the archive-and-transfer path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play PS4 games from an external USB drive on PS5?

Yes. Sony’s storage guidance says compatible PS4 games can be played directly from external USB storage. PS5 games stored there must be transferred back to console storage before play.
