Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShort answer: Hatch Restore 3 is a powered bedside sleep-routine device that combines light, sound, customizable wind-down routines, and a sunrise alarm. You do not need to keep a paid Hatch+ subscription for the basic functions, but you do need a phone, the Hatch Sleep app, Bluetooth, and a secure 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi network for initial setup. After setup, you can run a nightly routine and operate the alarm with the device’s physical controls, although the app remains useful when you want to change settings.
What Hatch Restore 3 does
Restore 3 is designed to put several bedside functions in one unit: a colored light routine, audio for sleep or relaxation, an unwind sequence, and a wake-up alarm that gradually uses light. Hatch describes the content as sleep-oriented and, in some marketing, as “science-backed,” but that wording is not an independent clinical outcome study. There is no established published statistic showing that Restore 3 improves sleep for a particular percentage of users, so treat it as a routine and environment tool rather than a medical treatment.

The device is intended to stay in one powered bedside location. It is not a battery-powered travel alarm. Hatch lists the enclosure as ABS plastic with LED lights and fabric, measuring 7.5 × 2.75 × 5.75 inches and weighing 19 ounces. Those are manufacturer specifications published by Hatch Support in 2026, not an independent measurement.

Do I need a Hatch+ subscription for the Hatch Restore 3?
No. Hatch separates the hardware’s core functions from its larger Hatch+ content library. Restore 3 includes sounds, lights, sunrise alarms, reminders, and a limited selection of unwind routines. Hatch+ expands the number and variety of sounds, lights, alarms, and unwind content and provides more ways to customize routines.

| Capability | Included with Restore 3 | What Hatch+ adds |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep and relaxation sounds | A core, limited selection | Additional sounds and a larger library |
| Light settings | Included light routines | Additional light content and customization |
| Sunrise and other alarms | Sunrise alarms and alarm controls | Additional alarm content and options |
| Unwind routines | A limited set of routines | More unwind content |
| Routine customization | Basic routine use | Expanded customization and more content combinations |
The exact catalog is liable to change, and Hatch’s support pages present library counts in different ways. For the current list, open the library in the Hatch Sleep app rather than relying on a fixed number quoted in an older review. The important buying distinction is the type of access: the device remains functional without membership, while Hatch+ is for a broader content library and deeper customization.
Can I use Hatch Restore 3 without a subscription?
Yes. Hatch says setup includes a free Hatch+ trial, and that basic Restore 3 features remain available if you cancel. You can therefore use the included sounds, lights, routines, reminders, sunrise alarms, and physical controls without continuing a paid plan.
Handle the trial as a time-limited offer rather than an automatic entitlement. The available material does not establish whether every new, used, or previously activated unit receives the same trial. It also does not establish a current subscription price. If you start the trial, check the renewal date and cancellation terms in the app store or other channel where you enrolled. Cancel through that same channel before renewal if you decide the expanded library is not worth paying for.
Canceling should not be confused with deleting the product from your account or resetting it. Hatch’s stated distinction is that membership content goes away while the basic Restore 3 features remain. If a specific sound or routine disappears after cancellation, it may have been part of Hatch+ rather than the included set; choose an included item in the app.
Does Hatch Restore 3 need Wi‑Fi?
It needs Wi‑Fi for initial connection and setup. Hatch’s technical requirements specify a secure 2.4 GHz wireless network, and the setup process uses the Hatch Sleep app on a Bluetooth-enabled phone or other compatible device. You should plan on having the phone, the app, Bluetooth, and the network available when you first install the unit.
“Phone-free” describes normal nightly use after setup, not a completely disconnected product. Hatch Support puts it this way: “We’ve designed Restore 3 so you can put your phone down during your nightly routine, however you will need your phone in combination with the Hatch Sleep app to get your Restore 3 connected to your Wi-Fi and for initial set up.” The device can then start and control a routine with its onboard buttons. The phone is still useful when you need to edit routines, change content, or adjust settings that are not available from the physical controls.

Hatch’s requirements do not say that every function will work indefinitely without an internet connection, so do not buy it on the assumption that it is a wholly offline alarm. The safe expectation is: network and app for setup and changes; device controls for the established nightly routine and alarm actions.

Hatch specifies 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi. A router that exposes only a 5 GHz network does not meet that stated requirement. Many modern routers broadcast both bands, sometimes under one combined network name. In that case, make sure the 2.4 GHz band is enabled and that your phone and Restore 3 can reach it during setup.
A secure network matters as well. Hotel, dormitory, office, and campus networks often use a captive-portal sign-in page; those networks can prevent a device from completing setup even when they advertise 2.4 GHz. Hatch support suggests checking the band, confirming the password, and keeping the router, phone, and app software current. It also mentions a phone hotspot or a travel router broadcasting 2.4 GHz as possible workarounds reported by some users. Those are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed compatibility, and a hotspot or travel router may have its own data, security, or captive-portal limitations.
What you need before setup
- A phone with the current Hatch Sleep app installed.
- Bluetooth enabled on that phone.
- Access to a secure 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi network and its password.
- A nearby power outlet; Hatch instructs you to keep Restore 3 plugged in.
- A location with enough room for the 7.5 × 2.75 × 5.75-inch device and a clear view of its light.
The phone does not replace the Wi‑Fi requirement. Bluetooth helps the app discover and configure the device, while the 2.4 GHz network provides the wireless connection Hatch specifies. If your phone is connected only to a 5 GHz-only network, change the router configuration or use another compatible network before beginning.
How to set up Hatch Restore 3
- Choose the permanent bedside position. Place the unit where its light can be seen without pointing directly into your eyes at close range, and where the cable can remain connected. Hatch’s instructions are to keep it plugged in at all times.
- Prepare the phone. Install or open the Hatch Sleep app and turn on Bluetooth. Keep the phone close to Restore 3 during pairing.
- Confirm the network. Verify that your router has a secure 2.4 GHz band enabled and that you know the exact Wi‑Fi password. If the router combines bands under one name, use its settings to ensure 2.4 GHz is available.
- Start the app’s setup flow. Follow the in-app prompts to discover Restore 3, pair it over Bluetooth, and provide the Wi‑Fi credentials. Keep the device powered throughout this process.
- Choose the included or trial content. Setup may offer a free Hatch+ trial. Read the renewal date and terms before accepting, especially if you do not intend to keep a paid plan.
- Create a routine and alarm. Select the light, audio, timing, and sunrise behavior you want. Save at least one routine that uses content you will retain if you later cancel Hatch+.
- Test the controls. Start and stop the routine from the device, adjust volume, and test the alarm and snooze behavior before your first night. This confirms that you can operate the basics without reaching for your phone.
Do not unplug the device after setup as a normal operating practice. Hatch positions Restore 3 as a continuously powered bedside product, and its support instructions specifically say to keep it connected to power.
Can I use Hatch Restore 3 without my phone?
For the nightly routine, generally yes. Once setup is complete, the physical controls let you start or stop an unwind routine, move between routine steps, change volume, pause audio, snooze or turn off an alarm, and toggle alarms. When the clock display is hidden, tapping the device reveals the time. Hatch’s controls guide also says you can configure up to three routines and swap between them.

That does not make the app optional forever. Use the phone when you need to connect the device initially, change a routine’s structure, select different content, or modify settings that are not exposed on the casing. A useful way to think about the product is “phone-free operation” rather than “phone-free ownership”: the phone can stay outside the bedroom at night, but it remains part of setup and maintenance.

Starting and moving through an unwind routine
The controls guide covers starting and stopping an unwind routine and moving between its steps. That lets you begin a saved sequence without opening the app. If you have multiple routines, the guide says up to three can be set up for swapping, which is useful for different bedtimes or weekday and weekend patterns.
Audio controls
You can adjust volume and pause audio from the device. These controls are practical when your phone is charging elsewhere or you are trying to avoid screen use during the last part of the evening.

Physical controls handle snoozing or turning off an alarm and toggling alarms on or off. Test the actions in daylight so you know which control you need when the room is dark.
Clock visibility
If you hide the clock display to reduce light at night, tapping the device reveals the time. That gives you a quick check without leaving a bright display on continuously.
What does Hatch+ add in practical terms?
The value of Hatch+ is breadth and flexibility, not access to the basic hardware. Someone satisfied with a small set of sounds, a few light colors, a sunrise alarm, and simple routines may have no reason to continue after the trial. Someone who wants to rotate content frequently or build more elaborate sequences is the more likely subscription customer.
Rank #4
- Choose Hatch+ when you want a larger and changing catalog, more unwind choices, additional light or alarm content, or expanded routine customization.
- Skip or cancel Hatch+ when the included sounds and lights cover your routine and you mainly need a reliable sunrise alarm and bedside controls.
- Check the live library first if a particular sound, color, or routine is the reason you are buying. Content availability can change, and the current in-app catalog is more reliable than a static list.
Wi‑Fi troubleshooting before you return the device
Restore 3 cannot find the network
Open the router settings and confirm that 2.4 GHz is enabled. If the router uses band steering, temporarily expose a distinct 2.4 GHz network name if your router allows it. Recheck the password character by character, then retry setup with the phone near both the router and Restore 3.
The app cannot discover the device
Confirm Bluetooth is enabled and that the app has the phone permissions it requests for nearby-device setup. Close and reopen the app, restart the phone, and power-cycle the Restore 3 while keeping it plugged in. Use the latest available router, phone, and app software, as Hatch recommends current software when diagnosing connection problems.
Your home network is unavailable
A phone hotspot or a travel router broadcasting 2.4 GHz may provide a temporary test network. Hatch describes these as options some users have reported, not as guaranteed solutions. A hotspot may fail because of carrier restrictions or because the phone cannot maintain the setup connection while broadcasting. A travel router may be blocked by the upstream network.
The network is a hotel, campus, or office portal
Captive portals that require a web-page login are a common obstacle for devices without a browser. If the network cannot provide ordinary WPA-secured 2.4 GHz access, use a private router or another network that meets Hatch’s stated requirements. Do not assume that seeing a 2.4 GHz signal means the product will authenticate successfully.
Power, size, and placement considerations
| Specification | Hatch-listed detail | Why it matters when buying |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensions | 7.5 × 2.75 × 5.75 inches | Measure the bedside table and leave room for the power cable and access to the controls. |
| Weight | 19 ounces | Light enough to move between rooms, but designed for a stable powered location rather than handheld use. |
| Materials | ABS plastic, LED lights, and fabric | The light and sound functions are integrated into a dedicated bedside enclosure. |
| Power arrangement | Hatch instructs users to keep it plugged in | Plan for a nearby outlet; it is not specified as a battery-operated alarm. |
Because Restore 3 is intended to remain powered, place it where accidental unplugging is unlikely. If you share a room, check that the light can be aimed or scheduled in a way that suits both sleepers; the product’s purpose is a programmable light-and-sound environment, not merely a silent clock.
Who is a good fit for Restore 3?
It may fit you if
- You want light, audio, a wind-down sequence, and a sunrise alarm in one bedside device.
- You have access to a secure 2.4 GHz network and a Bluetooth-enabled phone for setup.
- You prefer physical controls at night and do not want to use a phone during the routine.
- You are comfortable keeping the unit connected to power.
- You can decide whether the included library is sufficient or the expanded Hatch+ catalog justifies a recurring charge.
Look elsewhere or adjust expectations if
- Your only available Wi‑Fi is 5 GHz-only, captive-portal, or otherwise prevents ordinary 2.4 GHz device connections.
- You need a battery-powered or fully offline travel alarm.
- You expect every sound and customization option without a membership.
- You want a clinically validated treatment for insomnia or another sleep disorder; Restore 3 is not established as one.
A practical buying checklist
- Check your router. Confirm secure 2.4 GHz availability, not just a 5 GHz network name.
- Check your phone. Make sure you can install the Hatch Sleep app and use Bluetooth during setup.
- Check the outlet. Identify a bedside location where the device can stay plugged in permanently.
- Decide how much content you need. Compare the included library with the live Hatch+ catalog in the app.
- Plan for the trial. Record the renewal date and cancellation channel if you accept the free Hatch+ trial.
- Test phone-free operation. Before settling into a routine, practice the physical controls for starting, pausing, volume, snooze, alarm toggle, and time display.
- Keep your expectations precise. You are buying a configurable bedside routine device, not a proven medical intervention or a guaranteed solution for sleep problems.
Bottom line for buyers
Restore 3 makes the most sense when you want a powered bedside routine that combines light, sound, physical controls, and a sunrise alarm. The basic product does not require an ongoing Hatch+ subscription, but the membership is the route to a larger content library and more customization. Setup is the key compatibility checkpoint: you need the Hatch Sleep app, Bluetooth, and secure 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi, and Hatch says to keep the device plugged in. After that initial work, you can put the phone away for the nightly routine while keeping the app available for future changes.
