Before buying a digital PS5 game, know three limits: the purchase belongs to the PlayStation account that paid for it; Sony’s U.S. refund rules generally require that a game or add-on has not been downloaded or streamed and that the request is made within 14 days; and other users can play those downloads on only one PS5 where Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled. Sharing access on that console does not create separate ownership or make the purchase transferable.
What a digital PS5 purchase actually gives you
A PlayStation Store transaction is attached to the purchasing account. That account is the license holder Sony recognizes for downloading the game, restoring its licenses and managing the console-sharing setting. The transaction is not a disc that can be handed to another person, and the support rules covered here do not establish a general right to resell, transfer or permanently move a purchase to another account.

You can sign in to the purchasing account on another PS5 and download eligible purchases there. To let different accounts on one household console use those downloads, you enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on that PS5. Those other accounts receive permission to use the installed games on that console; they do not become owners of the purchase.
This distinction matters when a household changes consoles or users. The account that paid remains the account to use for purchase history, downloads and license management. A family member’s profile can be the profile used to play on the enabled PS5, but that profile does not acquire an independent copy that can be moved to a different account or sold.

Refunds for PS5 games and downloadable content
Sony’s U.S. checklist
On Sony’s U.S. PlayStation Store support page, full games, downloadable content and season passes normally qualify for a change-of-mind refund only when both conditions are met:
- The content has not been downloaded or streamed.
- The request is made within 14 days of purchase.
“Streamed” matters: the rule is not limited to a game you have started playing. Starting a download, preload or supported streaming session can remove the ordinary eligibility described on that page. If you are undecided, do not begin the download while you check the listing, edition and system requirements.
Faulty content is treated separately
Sony identifies faulty content as an exception to the ordinary checklist. That does not mean every crash, performance complaint or incompatibility is automatically approved. Explain the fault to PlayStation Support and follow the instructions for your Store region.

How to protect your eligibility
- Confirm the title, edition, platform and any included DLC before selecting purchase.
- After purchase, leave the game unopened and do not start a download or stream if you may cancel.
- Check the purchase date and submit a request before the 14-day U.S. window closes.
- Keep order details and a description of any genuine fault available for Support.
The rule described above is from the U.S. support page. Store policies differ by country, and local consumer law can add rights. Check the current PlayStation refund policy for the country tied to your Store account instead of treating the U.S. conditions as worldwide law.
Common refund situations
“I bought it yesterday but have not launched it.” Launching is not the only test. If the game has already downloaded or streamed, the ordinary U.S. change-of-mind checklist may no longer be satisfied.
“The console started downloading automatically.” A download or preload can matter even when you never opened the game. If cancellation is important, pause automatic downloading before purchasing or immediately afterward, and do not resume the main download while checking your options.
“I bought DLC or a season pass instead of a full game.” Sony places downloadable content and season passes in the same U.S. Games and DLC category. The no-download or no-streaming condition and 14-day request window therefore need to be checked for those purchases too.
“The game is faulty.” Use the fault route with Support and describe what happens. Do not assume that a fault automatically produces approval without a Support review.

Pre-orders: the release date and preload determine the window
Sony’s U.S. pre-order guidance uses two timing cases. In either case, the main game must not have downloaded or preloaded.

Preload is part of the condition even if you have not launched the game. Review automatic-download settings and avoid starting the main download when preserving a cancellation option is important.
A pre-order can include bonus content that becomes available immediately. Sony says that bonus stops working if you cancel the order, even when the main game has not started downloading. Treat an immediately available bonus as something you may lose when cancelling, not as evidence that the main game is refundable after use.
Two timeline examples
If you ordered more than 14 days before release, the relevant request deadline is before release day. Waiting until after launch can put the request outside that pre-order route, even if you are still within 14 days of the original order. If you ordered 14 days or less before release, Sony describes a second opportunity after launch: request within 14 days of purchase, provided the main content was never downloaded or preloaded.
Write down both the order date and release date. A preorder bonus that downloads immediately does not necessarily mean the main game has downloaded, but cancelling can disable that bonus. The safest approach is to avoid both the bonus-triggering content and the main preload until you are certain.
How Console Sharing and Offline Play works on PS5
Enable the feature on the household PS5
Sony automatically allows Console Sharing and Offline Play on the first PS5 used to sign in with an account. To check or change the setting, sign in with the purchasing account and use this path:
- Open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Other.
- Open Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Choose Enable on the PS5 you want to share.
If the account is already enabled on another PS5, disable it there before enabling the new console. Sony limits this feature to one enabled PS5 per account at a time.

What other users on that PS5 can do
Once enabled, anyone using that PS5 can play games and use media the account holder purchased and downloaded. Sony explicitly says this can work while the console is offline. The purchasing account still controls the transaction and remains responsible for downloading or restoring the license.

Offline availability depends on the game and its own requirements. A title that requires an online connection for every mode cannot be made an offline game by console sharing. Check the individual Store listing for network requirements.
For a household setup, download the game with the purchasing account on the intended PS5 first. Then verify the sharing setting and have each person select their own local user profile. If someone signs in on a different PS5, the sharing permission on the household console does not follow that person to the second machine.
Changing the enabled PS5
To move sharing to another console, disable the feature on the current enabled PS5, then follow the same Settings path on the replacement. If you cannot reach the old console, Sony provides an Account Management option to remotely deactivate all devices. That remote all-device action is available once every six months; it is not a per-console remote switch and cannot be repeated whenever needed.
Because remote deactivation affects all devices rather than one selected PS5, use it as a recovery measure for a lost, sold or inaccessible console. Afterward, sign in on the PS5 you still use and configure Console Sharing and Offline Play there. Do not plan on switching consoles repeatedly through the remote tool.
Game sharing is not the same as sharing PlayStation Plus
Game licenses and subscriptions are separate. A downloaded purchase shared through the PS5 setting does not give every user their own PlayStation Plus membership, and buying a game does not include Plus.
PlayStation Plus is attached to the subscriber’s account. Sony permits selected Plus benefits to be shared on a primary PS4 and on one PS5 where Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled. “Selected” is important: not every subscription feature is automatically available to every other account. Check Sony’s current benefit-sharing details for the specific feature you need.
Most PS4 and PS5 games require Plus for online multiplayer, but some games do not. The Store listing for the individual game is the authoritative place to check that requirement. Offline single-player access and online multiplayer access are therefore separate questions.

PS5 and PS4 use different names for the similar setting

On PS5, use the current name Console Sharing and Offline Play. Instructions that tell you to look for “primary PS5” are using PS4 terminology and can send you to the wrong menu.
Choose the setup that matches your situation

Sony’s instructions do not establish every simultaneous-play, account-sharing or license-validation edge case. Do not rely on an assumption that two consoles or two accounts can always play the same purchase at the same time.

The refund option is missing
- Check whether the game, DLC or season pass has downloaded, preloaded or been streamed.
- Confirm the purchase date against the 14-day U.S. window, or the deadline that applies in your Store region.
- If the content is genuinely faulty, contact PlayStation Support and describe the fault rather than presenting it as a routine change-of-mind request.
A family member cannot see the game
- Confirm that the purchasing account downloaded the game on that PS5.
- Check Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play and verify that it says Enabled.
- Make sure the family member is using a user profile on the same enabled PS5, not a different console.
- If the account was recently moved, remember that enabling a new PS5 requires disabling the old one first.
The old PS5 is unavailable
Use Account Management’s remote deactivation of all devices only when necessary. Sony limits that action to once every six months, so treat it as a recovery route for a lost, sold or inaccessible console rather than a routine way to switch between consoles.
Online multiplayer does not work for the shared user
First check whether that game requires Plus. Most PS4 and PS5 multiplayer games do, while some titles may not. Then verify whether the needed Plus benefit is one Sony allows to be shared on the enabled PS5. A working game license does not by itself satisfy a subscription requirement.
The setting appears enabled on the wrong PS5
Remember that the feature is limited to one PS5 at a time. Sign in with the purchasing account on the currently enabled machine and disable it before enabling the replacement. If that machine cannot be reached, reserve the once-per-six-month remote all-device option for that recovery situation.
Before you press Buy: a practical checklist
- Region: Identify the country of your Store account and read that region’s current refund policy.
- Edition: Verify PS5 versus PS4 entitlement, deluxe contents, season passes and duplicate bundles.
- Refund risk: If uncertain, do not download, preload or stream; note the purchase date.
- Pre-order: Determine whether you are more than 14 days before release or within the 14-day pre-release period, and disable automatic downloading if you may cancel.
- Household access: Decide which single PS5 will have Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled.
- Offline use: Download before travelling and confirm that the game supports the mode you intend to use offline.
- Multiplayer: Check the Store listing for Plus requirements and do not assume all subscription benefits are shared.
- Account security: Keep purchases on the account that made them; sharing a console is not a license-transfer process.
What Sony’s rules do not promise
The support instructions explain refund conditions, pre-order timing, console activation and selected subscription sharing. They do not provide a universal guarantee covering account closure, suspension, every future policy change, permanent access in every circumstance, resale or transfer to another person’s account. Plan around the account that purchased the game, retain access to that account and consult the current regional support page when an unusual account or license problem arises.

Can I get a refund for a PS5 digital game after downloading it?
Under Sony’s U.S. ordinary change-of-mind checklist, generally no: full games, DLC and season passes must not have been downloaded or streamed, and the request must be within 14 days of purchase. Faulty content is treated separately, so contact PlayStation Support if the content genuinely does not work.

Streaming counts in the U.S. checklist just as downloading does. If you may cancel, do not start a supported streaming session while you verify the edition, requirements and refund policy for your Store region.
How do I share a digital PS5 game with another account?
On the PS5 you want to share, sign in with the purchasing account and open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play, then choose Enable. Download the game there. Other users of that same enabled PS5 can play the purchased download, including offline when the game supports offline use.
Can two accounts play the same digital PS5 game?
Other users can play the purchaser’s downloaded games on the one PS5 enabled for Console Sharing and Offline Play. This gives use permission on that console, not a second ownership license. Sony’s cited instructions do not promise every simultaneous-play or two-console arrangement.
Can I play my digital PS5 games offline?
Sony says purchased and downloaded games can be used by other users on the enabled PS5 while it is offline. The individual game still controls whether its modes work offline; an online-only mode cannot be made offline through sharing.

In the U.S., pause before downloading or streaming if a refund might be needed, watch the separate pre-order deadlines, and use Console Sharing and Offline Play on only one PS5 for household access. Check your Store region and the individual game’s offline and PlayStation Plus requirements before buying.
