Start by separating the things you may be buying
A branded offer can combine several distinct items: a game or add-on, a digital collectible, a token associated with artwork, and physical merchandise. Each can have different terms, dependencies, and refund rules. Do not assume that paying once gives you ownership of every component or the same rights to all of them.

- Digital game or add-on: Check whether the seller grants a license to use it and what account, platform, or service is required.
- Digital collectible: Check the terms for the token, the associated image or artwork, and any display, transfer, or commercial rights separately.
- Physical merchandise: Confirm exactly what ships, who sells it, and what shipping, return, and dispute terms apply.
What does “buy” mean for the digital content?
For digital content, a checkout button does not by itself establish permanent or unrestricted ownership. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that access may depend on keeping an active account or on the platform remaining in business. Account status, digital rights management (DRM), and the seller’s license to the material can also affect continued access. Read the seller’s terms and ask what happens if an account is closed, a service ends, or a platform stops supporting the content.

The terms say the license is not transferable unless local law requires transferability. PlayStation also treats physical goods under separate terms. For a digital collectible, check the token and artwork rights separately
A digital collectible can involve a token and associated art, but those are not automatically the same thing as the rights to reproduce, display, or commercially use the art. Read the issuer’s agreement to see what rights attach to the token and what rights, if any, it grants for the associated artwork. Also look for any account, wallet, website, image-hosting, game, or redemption service needed to use the collectible.
Mattel’s Digital Collectible License Agreement, for example, describes an NFT linked to digital art and distinguishes the intangible art from physical objects. That is an issuer-specific example, not a universal NFT rule. A token record alone does not establish that an issuer will maintain a website, host an image, or keep a redemption service available. Find out what is included and who is selling it
For a bundle, verify each component rather than relying on the product name or promotional image. Check whether the merchandise is a figurine, toy, book, shirt, accessory, or something else; whether it is included in the price or sold separately; and whether the listing identifies its seller and licensing clearly. A branded theme or character image alone does not establish that a particular listing is officially licensed.
Store terms can show that physical merchandise is part of a brand’s sales offering, but they do not verify an unrelated marketplace listing. Ubisoft’s U.S. Store terms, last updated in September 2024, cover digital content and physical collectibles such as figurines, toys, books, T-shirts, and accessories. They say orders are generally final, subject to the terms and any return policy applicable to the purchase. Before ordering from a marketplace, inspect the individual seller’s terms, delivery and shipping charges, return process, and dispute procedure. Check whether any buyer protection actually covers both that seller and the item, and use a payment method with appropriate protections. The FTC’s guidance is direct: “Make sure the protection applies to the thing you’re buying or the seller you’re buying from.” Read the FTC’s marketplace buying guidance.
Check refunds at the point of sale
Refund rules depend on what was bought, where it was bought, and the applicable jurisdiction. If a platform sends you to a console store, mobile store, or developer payment page, identify which seller processed the payment and read that seller’s policy before checkout.

Epic says transactions through third-party stores are transactions with those third parties and follow their rules. Its refund policy likewise directs customers to the policy of the third-party store or developer payment provider for purchases made there. Read Epic’s Terms of Service and refund policy.

For a child’s account, review spending and purchase settings
Some games offer in-game purchases such as currency, weapons, outfits, loot boxes, or bonus levels. If a payment card is linked to a child’s account, check the account’s spending controls and whether a purchase is consumable or random before approving it. The FTC lists these as examples, not a claim that every game offers them. Read the FTC’s guidance on kids and video games.
Use this pre-purchase checklist
- List every component. Write down the game or add-on, collectible, artwork, and physical items the offer says are included.
- Read the rights terms. Identify whether the digital content is licensed, whether it can be transferred, and what rights apply separately to a collectible token and its artwork.
- Map the dependencies. Note required accounts, platforms, wallets, servers, apps, or redemption services, and what the terms say about access if one is unavailable.
- Identify the seller and issuer. Confirm who takes payment, who issued the collectible, and whether the merchandise’s official licensing can be substantiated.
- Check returns and protections. Review refund eligibility for each component, shipping charges, physical-item return terms, dispute handling, and whether buyer protection covers this seller and product.
- Calculate the full cost. Include shipping and any recurring or optional in-game spending you are considering.
- Recheck immediately before checkout. Terms can change, so use the current terms for the actual product, seller, platform, and country.
The examples above are mostly U.S.-specific consumer and platform guidance, plus one issuer-specific collectible agreement. They do not establish the legal rules for every country or product; check the terms and consumer protections that apply where you live.
