It is not the only way to begin: Croteam describes both the 2014 original and the 2025 updated version, The Talos Principle: Reawakened, as ways into the series. You do not need to treat the separate Road to Gehenna expansion as required homework; the official descriptions reviewed do not establish it as a prerequisite.
This is a spoiler-light guide to the first game’s premise, the sequel’s connection to it, and which version to choose.

What is The Talos Principle about?
Croteam describes The Talos Principle as “a first-person puzzle game in the tradition of philosophical science fiction.” You awaken in a world where ancient ruins sit alongside advanced technology, and a creator sets you increasingly complex puzzles. The game’s non-linear world lets you choose your route through those challenges.
The puzzles frame questions about identity, purpose, faith, humanity, technology, and civilization. Croteam’s original factsheet puts the central questions this way: “Who are you? What is your purpose And what are you going to do about it?” You do not need to memorize the lore or arrive with answers; the questions are part of the experience of exploring and solving puzzles.

The original game was released on 11 December 2014, according to Croteam’s factsheet.
How does the first game connect to The Talos Principle II?
Croteam calls the sequel “the next step forward in the story.” Its setting shifts to a society of robots after biological humanity has become extinct, with human culture carried on in a city. The adventure centers on a mysterious megastructure and broadens the series’ concerns: alongside questions of reason and civilization, it asks whether a new society will repeat humanity’s mistakes. The sequel’s premise is a thematic continuation, not a recap of the first game’s answers.

The change in focus is useful to understand before starting: the first game emphasizes a creator’s challenge and questions of identity, faith, and purpose; the sequel places those concerns against the choices and future of a post-human society. Croteam’s The Talos Principle 2 page describes the setting and its civilizational questions.
What changes in the puzzles and exploration?
The sequel retains established mechanics from the original and combines them with new abilities, including gravity manipulation and mind transference. Its puzzles range across different difficulties and include metapuzzles and Gold puzzles. Croteam also describes more than a dozen all-new environments, giving the sequel a broader exploration setting.

You can approach its challenge at different levels of completion: Croteam says finishing the game does not require solving every puzzle, while players seeking complete mastery can pursue the optional challenges. Its character-driven story has multiple endings, so avoid expecting one fixed resolution.
Should you play the 2014 original or Reawakened?
The Talos Principle: Reawakened, released by Croteam in 2025, updates the presentation and adds quality-of-life revisions, a puzzle editor, developer commentary, and the new story chapter “In the Beginning.” Croteam says, “The core gameplay and storytelling principles remain unchanged.” That makes Reawakened a reasonable starting point if you prefer the updated version; the original remains a valid entry point, particularly if you already own it. Neither is described as mandatory for understanding the sequel.

The original factsheet lists PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, iOS, and Nintendo Switch among its platforms. Availability can differ by platform and territory, so check the store for your region. Croteam’s Reawakened announcement describes its additions and the studio’s statement about the unchanged core principles.
Do you need to play Road to Gehenna first?
No prerequisite is established in the official descriptions. Road to Gehenna is a separate expansion that follows Uriel, Elohim’s messenger, on a mission of mercy and redemption. It contains four episodes, advanced puzzles, new characters, and a society with its own history and philosophy. Choose it if you want more of the original game’s world and puzzle challenge, not because you need to complete it to start the sequel. See Croteam’s Road to Gehenna description.
