A ticket normally gives you a coach and berth shown on the reservation details, but it does not automatically promise air-conditioning, a complimentary bedroll, or an included meal. Fans, lights, cushioned berths, luggage racks, wash basins and charging points are part of the equipment described in railway technical and training references; their condition can differ from one coach or journey to another.
Plan on bringing your own comfort layer, and treat food as a separate arrangement. Check the named train and current service information before you travel, especially for bedding and eCatering availability.

What Sleeper Class means
Sleeper Class, shown as SL when you search or book an ordinary Indian Railways train, is a non-AC reserved class intended for overnight and long-distance travel. It is not the same product as AC 3-tier, a premium or luxury train, or the newer Vande Bharat Sleeper service. The defining features are an assigned sleeping berth and a coach without air-conditioning.
Your reservation details should identify the train, date, coach and berth. Keep that information available at the station and while boarding: station displays, coach labels and the final reservation chart are more reliable than assumptions about where a particular berth will be located.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Because trains use different coach types and maintenance conditions, a technical description is not a guarantee that every fitting will be present, clean or working on every trip. Think of the published equipment as the intended baseline, then verify the actual train-specific information.
How berths work
An assigned place to sleep
A reserved SL ticket assigns a berth rather than an unallocated seat. The reservation may show a lower, middle or upper berth in the main bay, or a side lower or side upper berth, depending on the coach and allocation. Those labels tell you the berth position; they do not promise a private compartment, curtain or personal reading light.
In a conventional sleeping coach, berths are used as seating during the day and arranged for lying down at night. The exact mechanism and layout can vary by coach design. Do not assume that every train has the same berth count, spacing or aisle arrangement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat to check before boarding
- Confirm the coach code and berth number on your ticket or current reservation chart.
- Match the coach position shown at the station with the train’s actual stopping location; coach order can differ between services.
- If a berth has been changed, use the latest chart or railway enquiry information rather than an older screenshot or message.
- Keep your ticket and an accepted identity document available for inspection.
Space and privacy
SL is shared accommodation. Even an upper berth does not create a sealed cabin, and a lower berth can be used as a seat by fellow passengers during the daytime period. Privacy curtains, individual reading lamps and a guaranteed personal charging socket should not be assumed unless the particular coach is documented as having them.

Facilities you can reasonably expect
Indian Railways technical material, including the Research Designs and Standards Organisation’s Revised LHB Maintenance Manual, Volume II, Chapter VI: Furnishing, and South Central Railway’s carriage-and-wagon knowledge material, list core fittings for sleeper accommodation. These are designed features, not a promise about the condition of a specific coach.
| Facility or fitting | What it means in practice | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Fans and lights | The coach is ventilated and illuminated with fixed equipment rather than air-conditioning. | Airflow, brightness and working condition can vary. A non-AC coach will not provide refrigerated cabin air. |
| Cushioned berths | Berths have built-in cushioning intended for sitting and sleeping. | Padding and upholstery condition differ with age, repairs and use. |
| Luggage racks | Overhead or designated rack space is provided for bags. | Capacity is limited; secure valuables and do not block the aisle or access to berths. |
| Wash basins | Basic washing facilities are part of the coach fittings. | Water supply, cleanliness and working taps are not guaranteed for the whole journey. |
| Charging outlets | Railway training references describe charging provision in sleeper coaches. | Outlet location, availability and whether a socket works can vary. Carry a charged power bank if a phone is essential. |
The presence of a fan, lamp or socket is not the same as reliable operation. Report a serious defect to railway staff or the onboard ticket-checking staff when possible, but keep a backup plan for lighting and device power.
Is bedding included?
Do not assume that every ordinary Sleeper Class ticket includes a railway bedroll. The available official material does not establish a current, nationwide SL entitlement. A Railway Board release discusses bedroll provisions in particular contexts; that kind of context-specific instruction should not be converted into a blanket rule for all Sleeper Class trains.
Check the current details for your named train and service if bedding matters to you. If no provision is clearly stated, pack a compact personal sleep layer. A lightweight travel sheet or sleeping-bag liner is an optional item that can make a familiar barrier between you and the berth surface; it is not mandatory railway equipment, proof that bedding is absent, or a substitute for checking the service.

A practical bedding decision
- Need certainty: verify the train’s current bedding information before departure and contact the railway or booking channel if the listing is unclear.
- Prefer a small backup: carry a travel sheet or liner that fits in your day bag.
- Travel light: choose a thin layer rather than assuming you need a full sleeping bag in every season.
Are meals included in an SL ticket?
An ordinary Sleeper Class fare should not be treated as a meal package. Food may be available through onboard or station arrangements, but the class itself does not establish that a meal, drink or pantry service is included.
Using IRCTC eCatering
IRCTC eCatering is an ordering option for packaged meals delivered to a passenger’s seat or berth at a selected station, subject to the service’s availability and terms. It is separate from the rail ticket. Availability can depend on the train, route, station and the menu offered for that service.
- Open the official IRCTC eCatering service through its current website or app.
- Enter the requested journey or reservation details so the service can identify eligible trains and stations.
- Choose a delivery station and an available meal, then review the order terms and pay through the presented method.
- Remain at the assigned berth or seat when the train is stationary at the selected delivery stop. Delivery depends on the passenger being available during that stop.
- Keep the order confirmation and use the service’s support route if the train is delayed or the order cannot be delivered.
Do not order on the assumption that a train will wait for you at a station. If you leave the coach, change berths or are not present during the stationary period, delivery may fail under the service terms.

A delay does not create an automatic entitlement to a replacement meal or a refund outside the applicable eCatering terms. Check the current order status and the service’s instructions. The practical issue is whether the delivery station, train timing and your presence at the berth still match the order conditions.

What the national meal figure does—and does not—say
Indian Railways’ Year Book 2023–24 reports an average of 55,118 meals per day for IRCTC eCatering during that report period. That is a network-level annual-report statistic, not a current count and not evidence that food is offered on your particular Sleeper Class train.
How to prepare for an SL journey
Before you book
- Confirm that the class shown is SL and that you are choosing ordinary Indian Railways Sleeper Class, not an AC or premium sleeper product.
- Check the train number, route, departure date and the stations where you will board and leave.
- Read the current train or service information for any bedding or catering offer; do not infer it from another train’s listing.
- Consider the season and journey length. A non-AC coach exposes you to ambient conditions, so clothing and hydration matter more than they would in a cooled cabin.
At the station
- Use the departure board or railway enquiry information to find the current platform and coach-position guidance.
- Locate the coach marked on your ticket and confirm the berth number after boarding.
- Store large luggage so it does not obstruct the aisle, berth access or other passengers’ space.
During the journey
- Keep your phone, wallet, documents and medication within reach rather than in an overhead bag.
- Use a charging outlet only if it is visibly safe and functioning; do not overload it with damaged adapters.
- For an eCatering order, be at your berth at the chosen station and watch for the delivery confirmation.
- Ask railway staff about a serious sanitation, lighting or safety problem instead of relying on another passenger’s assumption about the coach.
What to pack
| Item | Status | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Travel sheet or sleeping-bag liner | Optional | Provides a compact personal sleep layer when you do not want to rely on uncertain bedding arrangements. |
| Light blanket or warm layer | Season- and route-dependent | Non-AC coaches do not regulate cabin temperature; night conditions can differ from the departure weather. |
| Eye mask and earplugs | Optional | Useful in a shared coach with lights, announcements and fellow passengers moving through the aisle. |
| Power bank and charging cable | Practical backup | Charging outlets are described in railway training material, but a particular socket may be unavailable or out of order. |
| Water and personal medicines | Essential for your own needs | Food and drink arrangements vary, and a booked meal is not a substitute for medication planning. |
| Small lock or luggage cable | Optional | Helps secure a bag when you need to sleep or leave your berth briefly. |
These suggestions are personal preparation, not a list of railway requirements. A travel sheet is not evidence that a specific train has no bedding; it is simply a way to carry your own comfort option.
Common assumptions that cause problems
“Sleeper” means air-conditioned
It does not. Ordinary SL is non-AC. If temperature control is a deciding factor, select an AC class instead of assuming that the word “sleeper” describes the climate system.

Every sleeper coach has identical fittings
Technical references describe intended fittings, while actual coaches differ by design, refurbishment and maintenance. Do not rely on a guaranteed reading lamp, privacy curtain, working socket or identical berth spacing.

A ticket includes a bedroll
The current nationwide entitlement is not established for ordinary SL. Verify the named service or bring an optional personal sleep layer.
Food is automatically supplied
A reserved berth does not bundle a meal. Check eCatering or other available arrangements for your route, and place an order only when the service lists your train and delivery station.
A national eCatering statistic guarantees local availability
The 55,118-meals-per-day figure in the 2023–24 Year Book describes average network activity during that reporting period. It says nothing definitive about today’s menu, price or delivery coverage on one train.
