You can start Silent Hill: Townfall without playing any earlier Silent Hill game. Konami describes it as a self-contained story, and PlayStation’s official launch coverage specifically welcomes people who are new to the series. You will encounter the franchise’s psychological-horror ideas, but the protagonist, location, camera perspective and central device are new.
Townfall released on September 24, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. This guide explains its spoiler-light premise, how its first-person gameplay differs from expectations, what the CRTV does, how its endings work and which PS5 features are optional.

Do you need to play an earlier Silent Hill game first?
No. Townfall is designed as an independent entry, so you do not need background on Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3 or any other previous release to understand its setup. Konami presents the story as self-contained, while PlayStation’s official launch article explicitly addresses first-time players.

It remains a psychological-horror game built around isolation, uncertainty, distorted perception and environments that carry narrative meaning. Those are traditions rather than prerequisites: recognizing them may add context, but missing an old reference should not prevent you from following Simon Ordell’s story.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Townfall also is not established as a direct continuation of an earlier protagonist’s plot. It introduces a new lead and a new setting, so approach it as a separate story within the wider franchise.
The spoiler-light premise: Simon Ordell on St. Amelia
You play as Simon Ordell, an outsider who washes ashore at the icy marina of St. Amelia, a remote island off Scotland. Fog, silence and the remains of the island’s community create the initial situation. The game deliberately withholds certainty, so the most useful preparation is to expect questions rather than a straightforward explanation of what happened.
Konami’s overview shows Simon with an IV bag and a medical wristband bearing his name. A pocket CRTV television also carries voices to him. These details establish Simon’s vulnerability and the game’s unusual information system without resolving the mystery. Later discoveries are meant to be experienced in context, so descriptions of the island’s history or Simon’s memories beyond this setup would spoil the intended progression.
What makes Townfall different from earlier entries?
Several design choices change how you will read and move through a Silent Hill game.
It is first-person throughout
Townfall is the series’ first full-length game presented entirely from a first-person perspective. You see the world from Simon’s eye level instead of following a third-person character on screen. That changes how spaces are read: doors, corners, objects and signals occupy your immediate view, and the game can use the limits of Simon’s perspective as part of its tension.

Writer and director Jon McKellan explained that “The CRTV couldn’t work from any other perspective.” The first-person camera is therefore tied to the game’s core device rather than being a cosmetic switch. The approach is Townfall’s own design decision; the fact that Silent Hill: The Short Message also used first person came from separate development timelines and teams, according to producer Motoi Okamoto.
The CRTV replaces the usual radio role with sound and images
The CRTV is a pocket television that receives both audio and visual signals. It is not merely scenery. Depending on the situation, its signals can help you detect nearby threats, reveal story information, navigate spaces or solve challenges.

This creates a practical tension: the device can make the environment more legible while also making you uneasy about relying on it. McKellan described the goal as forcing players to depend on the CRTV to survive while feeling uncomfortable about depending on it too much. Treat it as an information tool with a cost in attention, not as a permanent threat detector that removes uncertainty.
Puzzles are part of the narrative
Townfall’s puzzles are designed as elements of the story rather than unrelated lock-and-key interruptions. Searching an environment and interpreting what you find are connected to understanding the setting. The CRTV can contribute to these challenges, so examine visual and audio information instead of assuming every solution will be written on a conventional note.
Encounters allow different responses
The game combines evasion, stealth and combat. Which approach makes sense depends on the encounter; combat is not described as the only solution, and stealth is not mandatory in every situation. This gives you room to assess a threat, consider the surrounding space and decide whether confrontation is worth the risk.

- Feel you in-game actions and environement simulated through haptic feedback
- Experience varying force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone
- Connect a headset directly via the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
Do not approach Townfall expecting a permanently action-focused shooter or a game in which avoiding every enemy is compulsory. Its encounter design supports changing tactics.
Townfall compared with the series’ established expectations
The following comparison uses only clearly established design differences, not claims about which game is better, scarier or more difficult.
| Aspect | Townfall | What that means for a newcomer |
|---|---|---|
| Camera | First person for the full-length game | Your view is Simon’s immediate perspective, with no third-person character model framing the exploration. |
| Protagonist | Simon Ordell | You are following a new outsider rather than a returning lead. |
| Setting | St. Amelia, a remote Scottish island | The story’s geography and community history are introduced within this game. |
| Information device | CRTV pocket television with audio and visual signals | Signals can support threat awareness, navigation, story discovery and puzzles. |
| Encounter choices | Evasion, stealth and combat vary by encounter | You can choose a response instead of assuming one universal combat rule. |
| Continuity | Self-contained story | Earlier Silent Hill plot knowledge is optional, not a requirement. |
How the CRTV should shape your first playthrough
The CRTV is the mechanic most likely to challenge expectations. In a conventional horror game, a radio or similar object may warn you that something is near. Townfall expands that idea into a device that can also show visual information and participate in navigation and puzzles.
- Use signals as clues, not a complete map. A signal may indicate danger or provide context, but it does not make the environment safe or explain every mystery.
- Pay attention to both channels. Audio can carry voices or warnings while visual reception can reveal information that is not obvious in the physical space.
- Return to the device when a challenge seems unclear. Because the CRTV is integrated into puzzles and story discovery, an apparent dead end may require interpreting its output rather than finding a conventional key.
- Expect dependence and discomfort together. The game’s stated design goal is to make the device useful while preserving unease about using it.
These are ways to read the mechanic, not a promise that the CRTV solves every puzzle or exposes every enemy. Its role changes with the situation.
How endings and replaying work
Your actions across the playthrough influence the ending structure. This is broader than a single final dialogue choice deciding everything at the last minute.

- Multi-device connectivity - Connect using a USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth technology and easily play on more devices including Windows PC and Mac computers.
- Elevate PC gaming with advanced features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in a range of blockbuster PC titles.
According to series producer Motoi Okamoto, all three main endings can be reached during the first playthrough. The secret ending becomes available after you have cleared the game once. That means a first completion can contain meaningful variation, while a later run offers an additional goal for players who want to investigate further.
Because the endings reflect actions across the game, avoid treating every decision as a simple binary morality test. The official explanation establishes the structure but does not publish a complete decision list, and revealing one would undermine the spoiler-light approach.

What to expect when you begin
Start without doing franchise homework
You can begin Townfall directly. If you enjoy identifying connections to the wider series, you can treat them as additional context, but there is no required order of older games.
Expect investigation before explanation
The opening image of Simon on St. Amelia supplies concrete clues—his medical equipment, identity wristband and the CRTV—while withholding a full account. Read the environment and signals as pieces of a mystery rather than waiting for an immediate exposition scene.
Keep your response flexible
When an encounter begins, assess whether evasion, stealth or combat fits the circumstances. The game is built around varying options, so committing to one style before seeing the situation may work against the design.
Use PS5 immersion features only if they suit you
Adaptive triggers, haptics and motion controls are optional ways to interact with the PS5 version. They may add physical feedback for weapons, footsteps, aiming, map handling and CRTV puzzles, but the confirmed information does not make them universal requirements.
Why this entry matters in the wider series
Konami Digital Entertainment reported more than 17.8 million Silent Hill copies worldwide as of the end of June 2026. That figure includes units shipped, store downloads and subscription services; it is a franchise-wide count, not Townfall’s own sales and not revenue.
Townfall extends that established series without requiring newcomers to know its history. Its Scottish island setting, new protagonist, first-person presentation and CRTV mechanic give it a distinct starting point while retaining the franchise’s psychological-horror focus.
